Firstly, I would like to congratulate the successful candidates in the recent Dogs SA Council elections being, President Brian Parker and Elected Council, Caroline Murphy, Michelle Vuaran, Brian Fielder, Nick Gouzos and Connie Redhead. I would also like to show my gratitude to those not coming back on Council, Lance Heilmann and Peter Dynan. Both Lance and Peter have been Councilors since 2003 and have served in many roles during that period. On behalf of the membership, I sincerely thank them both for their many years of service to the Association.
The 2024 financial report has also been accepted by Council and released to the members for review. The report will be tabled at the Dogs SA Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 20 March 2025 at 7PM in the Bar at David Roche Park. If you have any questions about the financial report please forward your enquiry to info@ dogssa.com.au so an informed response can be provided for you and other members. You will note from the bottom line we did have a successful year and it is on the February Council agenda to discuss how some of the funds can be returned to the members to assist in the rising cost of conducting events.
The rewrite of the Dogs SA Constitution will also be placed back on the agenda for the AGM. The Constitution was defeated by just 1 vote at the 2024 AGM and Council has amended the areas that were of concern for the members so hopefully it will be passed this year. Along with the Constitution there has been a rewrite of the Association’s Rules with the more contemporary name of By-laws. Apart from the name change, the largest area of amendment is the procedures for Disciplinary, Investigation and Dispute Resolution which is now included in the By-laws whilst the requirements remained in the Constitution. With this, the procedure for the conduct of the Council Elections has been placed in the By-laws which will enable Dogs SA to move forward and use electronic and postal voting. Under the Associations Incorporations Act we cannot disadvantage any voting member from casting a vote.
It must also be noted for the first time in the history of Dogs SA we have achieved greater than 10% of the National membership. Because of this we now have 2 directors on the Dogs Australia board which gives us equal voting rights to Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
Over the last month I have been busy meeting with members of parliament from both sides of the house putting our case with them over the Dog and Cat Breeder Reform Bill which is still in discussion. The prime areas we are pursuing is to give Dogs SA members a fairer go as we are overly regulated now and in the main doing the right thing. Also, the removal of the Business license from the Act will hurt many of our breeders when paying for individual registration of all dogs. The last major item is a back flip by the Minister Susan Close to not declare IGP trained dogs to be attack trained. It is doubtful IGP would ever be banned however regulations need to be in place to identify experienced trainers and dogs that have undergone training whether they have qualified or not. We will keep up the fight.
As the BOM is expecting a hot March, keep yourselves and your dogs cool and safe over this period.

Shiba Inu
History
The Shiba Inu is generally acknowledged as the oldest of the Japanese breeds. It has been said that canine skeletons resembling the Shiba Inu have been found with human remains dating from 3000 BC.
Originally used as a hunting dog for small animals and birds, nowadays the Shiba Inu is more a much loved member of the family and is recognised as a national treasure in Japan.
Temperament
Although similar in so many ways to other Spitz breeds, independent and strong willed, the Shiba Inu is also very faithful to its owners and in many cases will bond with one specific member of the family over all others. The breed is a wonderful house dog because of its size, ease of toilet training and cat-like cleanliness. It will live quite happily in a smaller space, although, of course, it requires daily walks.
Appearance
The Shiba Inu has an attractive fox-like appearance, is bold and alert and is generally good natured. The breed should also be well-balanced, wellboned and have good muscle tone. The head should be clearly feminine or masculine (as appropriate) with deepset, small, triangular and slanting eyes and small, hooded triangular ears. The teeth should be strong with a scissor bite. The breed’s coat is thick with a stiff and straight outercoat and a softer, dense undercoat. The Shiba Inu comes in a variety of colours with the most common colour being red and urajiro: that is, white cheeks, chest, belly and under
tail area. Other regularly seen colours include black and tan, red sesame and black sesame and all these combinations must also have urajiro.
Maintenance
Generally, the Shiba Inu is easily maintained. The coat requires additional attention when dropping coat (ie daily brushing) but outside of this, a regular weekly brush and occasional bath will keep its coat under control. The breed does not require any clipping. Being such a strong-willed little dog, it is best to get the Shiba Inu started young with nail clipping (otherwise it might take two people to do it) and pay attention to the ears (being a hooded ear), if water gets in a fungal infection might develop.
Health
While the Shiba Inu is ultimately a healthy breed, it has been known to develop hip patella and slipped kneecaps. To avoid this developing early on, it’s recommend that owners don’t over-exercise the Shiba Inu, especially in the first 12 months. Avoid allowing it to jump off beds, lounges etc, and playing on slippery surfaces such as tiles or timber floors should also be avoided. The breed can also develop grass and food allergies, so a healthy, consistent diet is a must.
Suitability
Although suitable for flats and smaller homes, a secure fenced yard is a must, as well as a daily walk. Some Shiba Inus have been known to climb six-foot fences, so ensure the area is contained and leave a collection of toys to play with. The breed also has a passion for fetch that can prove to be a very effective exercise regime.
CANTEEN COMMISSION
Clubs interested in gaining commission by working in the Dogs SA Canteen on All Breeds Championship Show days are invited to contact the Canteen Manager, Margaret Bush on 0447 478 371 to arrange suitable dates.

Mount Gambier Story Dogs
Mount Gambier is very fortunate to have 11 Story Dog teams visiting schools in Mount Gambier and surrounding rural areas.
Most of our Story Dogs Volunteers and their Story Dogs have a strong background in Obedience, Rally, Agility and Tricks.
The Mount Gambier Story Dogs teams visit the following schools:
• Melaleuca, Primary school • MacDonald Pk, Primary school
• Moorak, Primary school • Newbery, Primary school
• Nangwarry, Primary school • Compton Primary school
The Story Dogs program is a reading support program for children who are struggling with their reading. When children read to a dog, the outcomes are amazing!
It is a non-judgemental setting, the children’s focus improves, their literacy skills increase and their confidence soars. The accepting, loving nature of dogs gives this program its magic and helps children relax, open up, try harder and have fun while reading to a friendly, calm dog.
The Story dog teams visit the same school once a week; the teacher chooses 4 students for the Story Dog volunteer team. The Story Dog Team supports the chosen 4 students for the whole year.
The Mount Gambier Story Dog volunteer’s teams are multidiscipline and compete in Trials, so we thought that this would be we a perfect opportunity to introduce Dog Safety demonstrations which has been very successful and enjoyed by all who attended.
The Dog Safety demonstration teaches the children how to approach and pat a dog. Also, other rules are included and need to be followed when a Story Dog visits their school, such as Pats not Hugs (see attached flyer).
At the end of the Dog Safety and Tricks demonstration all children present have the opportunity to pat the Story Dog of their choice. They are asked to demonstrate what they have learnt to the Story Dog Volunteer by standing the required distance from the Story Dog and then they can ask the Story Dog Volunteer “can I please pat your dog”?
This demonstration educates the children and makes it a delightful experience when a Story Dog Visits a school.
The Dog Safety program was only developed in the middle of 2024, since then we have educated children in 4 out of the 7 schools and intend to complete the other 2 schools this year.
We have also visited the Mount Gambier Library during school holidays and presented the program to the children and parents.
However, I do need to emphasize that the Dog Safety demonstration and Tricks team is only available in Mount Gambier. It is only possible because most of our Volunteers and dogs are multidiscipline and have completed Obedience, Rally, Agility and Tricks training.
Story Dogs is Australia wide therefor not all Story Dog Volunteers and dogs have the same training background.
Mount Gambier Story Dog Volunteers and their amazing Story Dogs love to visit the schools and show the children just how clever the Story Dogs are.
The Story Dog visits give our area a great advantage to offer a Dog Safety Awareness demonstration and to encourage children to participate in dog sports and especially dog safety.

NUTRITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR BREEDING BITCH DURING GESTATION
WHAT, WHEN & WHY
Dr Julie Summerfield Scientific Services Veterinarian Royal Canin ANZ
From the moment a puppy is conceived, all throughout their life, nutrition plays a vital role. Nutritional requirements do vary and change with age, breed, life stage and lifestyle. Reproductive status also needs to be considered as pregnant bitches have very specific needs for their health and the health of their unborn puppies.
There are two distinct phases to a bitch’s roughly 63-day gestation. Firstly, we have the embryonic phase for the first two thirds (6 weeks) of the gestation period. In this time, the cells of the embryo differentiate to form nerves, blood cells, skin cells, muscle cells, etc. The final trimester of gestation (week 6-9) is the foetal phase where rapid growth occurs in the foetus. These two phases have different nutritional requirements that need to be met, for the bitch to remain healthy and avoid whelping and neonatal problems down the track.
The energy requirements of the bitch in the first stage remain relatively unchanged. In the second stage, after day 42, there is a marked increase in energy requirements as this corresponds with marked foetal growth, while lactation has the highest demand for energy.
If the bitch if fed too much energy, and becomes overweight, this can be implicated in such problems from infertility, as well as whelping complications such as poor uterine contractility and an increased risk of a caesarean requirement. This dystocia can in turn lead to increased neonatal mortality.
It is important to ensure the body condition score of bitches remains ideal (4-5/9 BCS) during heat and gestation to help avoid this. Bitches should be regularly monitored throughout pregnancy for BCS to ensure their nutrition is adequate but not excessive.
There are specific nutrients that are critical for fertility, embryonic and foetal development, as well as neonatal health once born.
Folic acid is a B Group Vitamin important for the development of the nervous system. During embryonic development, folic acid requirements significantly increase. Deficiency can easily develop in the bitch if she does not receive adequate amounts, which can lead to increases in the risk of neural tube defects such as cleft palate, the most common congenital abnormality in puppies as well as dystocia.
A cleft palate occurs due to a failure of the roof of the mouth to close during development in the womb. This results in a hole between the mouth and the nasal cavity. Normally the palate will close around day 35, so supplementation needs to occur prior to this preferably from as soon as the bitch comes into heat. Studies have shown that folic acid supplementation during embryo development, significantly reduces the risk of cleft palate incidence.
Omega 3 fatty acids such as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) are very important nutrients for many functions in the body, including reproduction. These fatty acids are critical in the growth and development of the central nervous system, as well as vision for the embryo and foetus.
Studies in puppies have also demonstrated a beneficial effect on learning abilities and cognitive function (trainability) with DHA supplementation. These important nutrients can also assist with the digestive and immune functions.
Antioxidants are another important component when considering diet as they can protect against cell damage and include vitamins C, & E, Lutein and Taurine. Beta-carotene, also with antioxidant potential, can protect the DNA and tissues, as a precursor to Vitamin A has important functions for embryo nerve, muscle and skin development. They are also thought to have a role in progesterone secretion, preparing the uterus for implantation as well as helping to maintain gestation.
An important aspect to consider with nutrition in pregnancy is palatability as pregnant bitches often go off their food. They may require digestive support in the form of a highly digestible diet, with a balance of fibres to support optimal gut health and function, that provides all the required energy and nutrition tailored for pregnancy as well as high palatability for bitches who may be experiencing some inappetence that may be associated with hormonal changes.
To avoid any further digestive upsets, we always suggest a gradual transition from one diet to another over 7 days, which is why the recommendation for Starter diets will appear earlier at day 35 (a week before day 42).
We recommend a tailored diet specially formulated for breeding bitches from heat to day 42 of pregnancy where the bitch should then be transitioned on to a Starter diet for the last trimester.
Royal Canin HT42D (named because of the time it is recommended to feed) is specifically formulated for Breeding adult breeding bitches over 10 kg from the 1st day of heat to the 42nd day of gestation.
HT42D is formulated for Reproductive health with a unique nutritional profile to meet bitch reproductive cycle 1st stage needs: from heat to 42nd day of gestation. It contains added betacarotene to help prepare the bitch for optimal reproductive performance. Enhanced folic acid and fatty acids to support healthy embryo and fœtal development, and appropriate energy content.
SUMMARY
The puppies brain development can be assisted due also to the enriched DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, which is scientifically proven to support a puppy’s brain and visual development during gestation. Combination of prebiotics & highly digestible proteins help to promote a healthy balance of intestinal microbiota for digestive health & microbiome support.
THE BITCH ENERGY NEEDS
•Body weight of the pregnant bitch should not change much in the first 42days.
•Puppies gain 70% of their weight in the last trimester, this is when the bitch needs increased energy density in the diet.
•Energy requirement will increase by about 10%each week in the final trimester.
•At the time of whelping, the bitches body weight should have increased by 15-25%.
•Food intake becomes limited as the growing uterus compresses the stomach; in the final trimester it is recommended to switch to a “Royal Canin Starter diet.”
•An adult maintenance diet should not be fed during gestation as there will be energy and other nutrient deficiencies, however a growth or Starter diet fed for the whole pregnancy will lead to excess energy and fat accumulation.
•Lactation is the only stage where ad lib feeding is recommended for the bitch to accommodate for the enormous energy expenditure in this reproductive phase.
