The general discussion at the moment is the proposed changes to the Dogs SA Constitution and the implementation of the Bylaws which will accompany them. The constitution being presented at the 2025 AGM is very similar to the one presented at the 2024 AGM however the revised proposal includes the changes requested by the members present at that meeting.
The two principal changes are the members will elect the Vice President as currently done and the second that a casual vacancy in Council will only be filled by a nominated person by Council until the next election. The reason for filling the casual vacancy by Council is to save going to an election at a significant cost to the members.
The reason for the rewrite of the Rules into Bylaws is to ensure they are compliant with the Dogs Australia regulations and where possible reduce the inconsistencies between them. Where an item is written in the Dogs Australia regulations then it will not be replicated in ours. This is to avoid the confusion for members and inline with the Dogs SA push to standardize regulations. There will also be areas which are being removed from the constitution and placed in the Bylaws, the main area being how the election of the Board of Directors is conducted. This cannot change the make up of the board or a reduction of members rights but simply the conduct, eg allowing for electronic voting.
There have been quite a few gaps in the show calendar over the summer period which in some cases has been good due to the extreme temperatures we have been having. However, there are members complaining about the gaps. Clubs cannot afford to run shows at a loss as they all generally run on a shoe string budget using volunteer labour. Hence not many are prepared to pick up these weekends due to the risk. If any affiliate would like additional days or weekends to conduct shows, please contact the office to register an interest.
The 2025 AGM is set for Wednesday 26 March at 7.00 pm at David Roche Park. Time permitting after the AGM time will be made for general discussion with the members. If you have any particular questions to ask, would you please send them to the Executive Officer at info@dogssa.com.au so a detailed response can be provided to not just yourself but other members as well.
As a final note a reminder to all members. Voting in the council elections closes on Wednesday 05 February at 10am. Voting is for the President and 5 Councillors.

Hospitality Centre including the bar returned an approximate profit of $27,524 and in addition $17,050 was paid to Clubs as commission for working in the Canteen and BBQ. Canteen Manager, Margaret Bush has had another successful year managing the hospitality facility and Dogs SA as always is very grateful to Margaret for her hard work and thrifty purchasing to ensure Dogs SA receive the maximum profit. Thank you.
Dogs Australia conference was held in October in Brisbane this year and was attended by President Brian Parker and Executive Officer, Cheryl Currie.
The Investigative Committee had no changes to Committee members and dealt with numerous breaches and complaints. Approximately sixteen cases went to Hearings which included two Appellate Hearings, and one conciliation was held with an external facilitator. Dogs SA appreciates their ongoing assistance and professionalism in often trying conditions.
Council extends a sincere thank you to the Conformation Judge’s Training panel which delivered lectures via zoom for more than sixty evenings collectively. In addition, two Practical Handling days were held. Success of this program is reliant on the commitment of the Group leaders who are volunteers to deliver the training required. The Theory exams were held in November with twelve candidates sitting and seven achieving a pass result. The Practical exams held in December delivered an unprecedented pass rate with thirteen candidates and twelve passes. Lastly, without support from our members that bring their dogs to these invaluable events, there would be no training program, and we acknowledge the importance of their ongoing generosity in supporting the scheme.
Council extends a sincere thank you to the many volunteers that enable the Trial Advisory Committees to facilitate training of judges and provide a mentorship program. Their extensive contribution to the Trial scene includes State Championships, Nationals and participation in National Rule Reviews. The many disciplines available continue to flourish and this can only happen with the continued commitment from the many volunteers, judges, trainers that are willing to give their time and share their knowledge.

Projects for David Roche Park this year have included LED lighting for the rings, carparks & assembly areas. Dogs SA were fortunate to be successful in the application of a grant which provided reimbursement for half of these costs. Stainless steel tables have replaced the old office tables in the BBQ area as well as extra lighting. The Marsula kitchen saw the installation of a new dishwasher. Tree audit was conducted on the grounds and the report was actioned with all required removal and trimming complete. The large mound of debris next to the earthdog arena has been disposed of ready for the new fencing on the earthdog arena in early 2025. New plants have been planted along the fence line of the Kings Room (by members) to the Main Building and along the front of the phone tower. Welcome to Dogs SA signs at the main gates were replaced along with the signs of the
Dogs SA Committees held multiple Conformation events during the year. Both the Junior Handler Committee and DOTY POTY NOTY Committee ran successful weekends of Dog Shows. The “Best Show in Australia” Blackhawk Winter International was another cracking success with fabulous entries and support from exhibitors from every state in Australia. DOTY POTY NOTY main event was held at Dogs SA once again and maintained a similar entry to the year before. We have been lucky for our main events in 2024 with predominantly super weather conditions. The Committees that run exhibitions for Dogs SA members and competitors all over Australia are to be commended for world class events. We appreciate you and thank you for outstanding ongoing efforts.
Dogs SA Office have had a great year in 2024 with many exciting changes. The biggest being the new Dogs SA website which has been well received by our members. The website launch brings many improvements, such as a more userfriendly interface, enhanced functionality, and better access to information for dog enthusiasts, breeders, and members of the community. Staff were sad to see Mick Carter leave
in May. Rachael Fagan commenced shortly after and is now a valued member of the team. Staff Members Cheryl Currie & Nova Mahajabin are full-time with Simon Squire four and a half days and Ann Farndell three days a week. Dogs SA Office staff ran two days of Heart Clinics open to all Members and we plan for this to continue and promote health testing clinics where possible. Dogs SA Council supports health testing clinics that are run by clubs held on Dogs SA Grounds by providing rooms and advertising for no fee to the Golden Retriever Club for the Eye Clinic and French Bulldog Club for the BOAS Clinic. Another new feature the Office staff have welcomed is the facility to send text messages to members following up with reminders or similar. This has generated a more than 50% increase in return engagement. Knose Pet Insurance are now a valued Sponsor of Dogs SA and offer discounted rates to our members but most importantly, gives the opportunity to sign up as breeders and then send puppies home with complimentary insurance. This is invaluable to both breeders and purchasers of their beloved puppy and Dogs SA suggest this opportunity is fully utilized. Our office staff is committed to continually striving for excellence, ensuring that we provide our members with the highest level of support, knowledge, and assistance. We are dedicated to helping you in every way we can, making sure you receive the best service possible.
2024 OBEDIENCE
ADVISORY REPORT
2024 has been a good year for the OAC with strong involvement and continued support of the sport from the DogsSA Council. Again, it is great that there have been new faces in the earlier trial classes and I look forward to their ongoing participation and involvement in the sports of Obedience and Rally trials and Endurance tests.
I thank very sincerely the OAC members: Julie Brown; Peter Dynan; Annette Railz, Sue Laidler and Lyn Fielden. Julie’s support in managing our social sites (Facebook and Web) is a major role. I thank Council and the staff of DogsSA for ongoing support. Annette has been a welcome contributor taking on the role of trial manager for the State Championships. Lyn Fielden’s return to the Committee is welcome given her significant roles as the Trial Secretary for the State Championships and as the Registrar.
Annette and Lyn were instrumental in delivering another successful State Championships, our major event of the year. Thanks also to the SAODC for their outstanding support of the State Championships.
This year we have been active in the following areas: Obedience and Rally rules reviews; support for new club’s as potential future members and Judges training.
The judges training program this year has provided an additional Open Class judge – Ruth Haebich. We also will have 2 aspiring Rally judges and an aspiring Open judge in the training program. Thanks go to Brian Fielder for being a judge’s trainer and to Lynn Stapylton and Tony Brennan for the involvement on the Judges assessment panel.
I thank all of our Club’s and their committees and volunteers, particularly those that offer obedience and rally trials, those that keep our sport active through their competing, our judges who ensure that competition is maintained and the staff of Dogs SA for their support and assistance.
I take this opportunity to thank the membership and the OAC committee for their support in this my second stint on the OAC which started in 2011. At this time I consider this will be my last year on the OAC. I take this chance to urge and invite anyone interested in maintaining the future of our sports to consider becoming more actively involved in OAC activities. Neil MacDonald Chair OAC
2024 AGILITY ADVISORY REPORT
Good evening and thank you to everyone for attending the 2024 SGM and End of Year Awards.
I would like to commence this report by thanking the members of the 2024 Agility Advisory Committee for their tireless and at times thankless work this year. Your contributions to agility in South Australia have not gone unnoticed and I am eternally grateful for you electing me as the youngest chairperson in AAC history.
Unfortunately, the agility community has been met with two losses of much loved members, Kerry Thomas and Wendy Adams. They will not be forgotten and we honour their contributions to the dog sporting world.
In June, the AAC held the biggest event on the SA agility calendar with the state championships. They were greatly successful with just under 1200 entries, 89 handlers with 12 of those joining us from interstate including VIC, NSW, and ACT, and the stars of the state champs, 125 dogs. The AAC remained busy with qualifications left, right, and centre including 84 games, 48 agility, and a whopping 72 jumping passes. I make mention to our wonderful golden oldies (veterans) class which is always a popular spectacle. The layout of the schedule saw the return of finals to determine our state champions. Congratulations to all who came out on top.
The Dogs Australia National Championships were once again held in New South Wales. I congratulate everyone who made the trip over and competed in less than ideal conditions. Our State Team ‘The Southern Fliers’ represented South Australia well in the first day of competition flying their way to a second place podium finish behind the home team. I am incredibly proud of how the team conducted and presented themselves with particular mention, their media appearance on Channel 7’s Sunrise. In the qualifying heats and finals, South Australia was well represented and various teams had podium finishes. I would like to congratulate the national champions we have in South Australia being Barbara Moore and Hazel, Julie Lyon and Scud, Cathy Warcup and Jonty, and Bevan Hill and Duke. This year saw Dogs SA welcome two new agility judges, Barbara Moore and Bronwen Wills. The training and examination is not made possible without mentors, judges assessment panel, and the wider agility community. The practical examinations were held at Barb and Bron’s respective affiliated clubs and well attended with handlers volunteering their spare time to be judged. I cannot name everyone who attended otherwise we’ll be here all night. I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude for everyone’s assistance in making the assessments run as smooth as they did.
During the trialling year we have been fortunate to have two dogs receive the highly sought after Agility Champion Title and one dog becoming South Australia’s first Agility
Games Champion! I would like to congratulate Debra Karutz & Hudson, Tina Comely & Hettie, and Natalie Mudge & Aurora. Your efforts and hard work have paid off and will be recognised tonight.
The Agility Advisory Committee kept busy trying to represent the agility community as best as they possibly could. We conducted an agility audit with all of the affiliates identifying where future AAC’s can assist, created a criteria for the judges assessment panel, and formulated a comprehensive budget for 2025. The budget has been carefully articulated to enable the 2025 AAC opportunities to assist with upgrading affiliate equipment, bringing in interstate/international judges for seminars/trials, continuing with the great success of the state championships, starting to plan the 2028 nationals, and much much more. I also make mention of the meetings held this year being the agility judges meeting and the first affiliate club representative meeting. These meetings were eye opening and were beneficial in getting detailed insight into how Dogs SA and the AAC can assist.
2024 was and is the first year of the agility rules review. Meetings were conducted, with judges and the community held separately. Submissions were collated and put forward to the national committee which can be located on the Dogs Australia website. A meeting has been set on 7 December for the SA community to individually go through all submissions collated from each state to see which rules we, as a community, would like our representative to vouch for in the February National meeting.
Tonight we elect the people who will be representing us as the 2025 Agility Advisory Committee. I cannot stress how important it is to vote. If you want to feel like you are being heard, this is your opportunity to vote for your voice. A ballot piece of paper with all the nominees will be handed around and collected shortly.
That’s enough talking from me. I wish the 2025 incoming Agility Advisory Committee all the best of luck and success for the future. Congratulations to all the winners of the end of year awards.
Jess Stroet Chair AAC

2024 SCENTWORK ADVISORY REPORT
Scent Work in SA has been administered by the Scent Work Advisory Committee on behalf of Dogs SA. The Committee for the last few years has consisted of Narelle Medlicott (Chair), Sharon Gahan (Secretary), Kate Lloyd, Angie Shepherd and Jean Milnes. As we come to a close on 2024 a number of us have decided to hang up our hats. So tonight we say goodbye to Angie, Kate, Sharon and myself. The SWAC committee over the last couple of years has been instrumental in getting Scent Work off the ground in SA which initially included mock trials, then official trials, club training and judges training. A massive thank you to each one of you for all your hard work, dedication and time on the Scent Work Committee.
Over the course of the year SA continued to make good progress with Scent Work trials with most nearing capacity for entries. It is approximated that over 40 trials have been held with a combination of single element night trials and some multi element day trials.
In June the Scent Work Advisory committee held a 3 day trial where all classes over the 4 elements was held. We had exhibitors come to complete from both Western Australia and Victoria. We welcomed Judge Mike Jeavons from Queensland who judged some of the Master and Excellent levels over the weekend and then went on to host a Theory session for all our judges and trainees on the Monday which included a session on the new Ultimate Class. The session was well received by all.
The Scent Work Advisory has begun preparation for their trial
in June 2025 with interstate judge Donna Puttock verbally accepting a contract to judge. Jean is currently in talks with Donna regarding a workshop also.
It has been a busy year with the Rules review and getting judges and competitors on board with discussion meetings and training the changes that come into effect 1st July 2024.
In June we completed a Judges and competitor training day on the new rules and have In July SWAC completed a practical day for judges on the new Ultimate class. Those already accredited judges have now completed their Theory exams and we have accredited those 7 judges to judge the ultimate class. From inception of Scent work in SA until 30th sept 2024 the following titles have been gained: Novice – 110 Advanced – 35 Excellent – 1 Containers – 1 Vehicles – 1 (for reference titles gained from 01/10/23 – 30/09/24 we have had 49 Novice, 27 Advanced, 1 Excellent, 1 container and 1 Vehicle). A big few years and certainly a big 23/24. Congratulations to all that have obtained titles.
Towards the end of 2023 had a 5 new trainee judges enrol in the Judges training scheme. We have had 2 theory sessions and a mock trial for these trainees. We are pleased to say that 2 of them have passed their theory exams and with date of 1st December booked to complete their exams after original date being cancelled due to hot weather.
We had 2 existing trainees complete their Theory and practical exams with one being fully accredited to judge all levels and one being accredited to judge Novice only and we have had an additional judge successfully upgraded to Advance level. This brings our total number of judges to judge all levels to 9 and 1 at Novice level and 1 at advance level.
In addition to trials a number of Demos have been held, The Animal Expo, The Royal Show and The Callington show. All of these Demos have been extremely successful with lots of fantastic feedback. Id like to sincerely thank Jean Milnes, Kate Lloyd, Lynne Staplyton and Brian Fielder for their huge efforts in getting these demos as part of these exhibitions and for organising all the information and helpers required; Thankyou to all those that participated in show casing scent work at these Demo’s. I look forward to seeing these Demo’s continue in the future.
Finally, I wish the incoming committee well and hope the success of the Scent Work Advisory continues into the future.
Narelle Medlicott
Chair SWAC
2024 DANCES WITH DOGS & TRICKS ADVISORY REPORT
Thank you for attending our Special General Meeting. Competitions and Training
The DWDAC has not hosted any Dances with Dogs or Tricks competitions in 2024, with the focus instead being on the state championships scheduled for April 2025. The draft schedule for this weekend has been submitted to Dogs SA and is awaiting approval.
A number of clubs in South Australia continue to run training, competitions and tests for both Dances with Dogs and Tricks. The DWDAC has provided training this day in a unique one-
on-one workshop format in October. This event quickly booked out and provided a much-needed fundraiser for the committee. New committee pending, this is likely to become a regular offering from the advisory committee.
Committee Composition
Thank you also for the support of the DWD and tricks community in South Australia in my first - and hopefully onlyyear of being DWD AC chair and delegate for South Australia. While I have been on the DWD advisory committee for a number of years, the activity of the national committee has been daunting, especially when it comes to the relativelynew sport of tricks. As a DWD judge with only minimal involvement with tricks, it has been difficult for me to adequately represent SA in these national discussions. I am encouraged by the number of strong nominations that the AC has received. I hope that in this upcoming year tricks can be better represented by a new state representative. This year, personally, I have been exceedingly time-poor, and I am grateful for the support of the current committee. Carolyn Gregory has performed secretarial functions wonderfully and I am very grateful for her diligence. Thanks also to Shauna Ashewood has performed the treasury duties. Jeannine Lampe has been working on organising a workshop for the community for 2025. Thank you to all the current committee. Unfortunately, Carolyn Gregory and Shauna Ashewood will not be continuing on the advisory committee for 2025. I am grateful for their support on the committee for the last few years.
While we have six nominations for 2025, one of these nominations has withdrawn. This leaves just five people to fill seven positions. I would encourage anyone on the floor who is interested in nominating to do so.
Tegan Whalan Chair DWDAC
2024 RETRIEVING & FIELD ADVISORY REPORT
The Retrieving and Field Advisory Committee administers for several small sports, but unfortunately the Field disciplines have generally disappeared in this state, although a few hardy souls compete interstate. The two surviving disciplines are Retrieving Trials for Gundogs and Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs (RATG).
There were five RATGs run this year. The Gundog Club organised a weekend of 4 trials, while the Labrador Retriever club ran one, for their breed only, in conjunction with their National conformation show. These trials are a stepping stone to the more demanding Retrieving trials.
Retrieving trials have been held in this state for at least 60 years, but the breed clubs that originally supported the sport have dropped out one by one owing to the difficulties of running the trials. The main club running trials is the Retrieving and Field Trials Club of SA (RAFTCOSA). A small committee has worked hard to run eight days of trialling (four weekends). The German Shorthaired Pointer club also ran a day on the June long weekend in conjunction with RAFTCOSA. Another weekend was planned, but inclement weather meant the property was rendered unsuitable. We need water to test the
dog’s ability to swim, but too much rain fell and the grounds became a quagmire.
Breeds competing this year include Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, Murray River Retriever, German Shorthaired Pointer, Weimaraner, Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever. Dogs competing in Retrieving trials must be pure bred and from Group 3. This rule is relaxed a little for RATGs and this year a dog, on application, was approved to run as an Associate Register Gundog.
Every year Dogs SA holds a Retrieving State Championship. This year it was held on the grounds of Barmera and Moorook Field and Game with Paul Littlejohn (Tas) judging. SA’s own Ray Ashenden won with NTL & GR RT CH NATIVERUN ANGUS CM. Thanks go to John Nairn for the arduous task of Trial Managing.
Russell Whitechurch (SA) won the 2024 National Retrieving Trial Championship (held in Victoria) with Nat Gr Rt Ch Adderslot Maggie May (AI) DM. Again! Russell’s record in winning Nationals while competing for Victoria and latterly for SA is unprecedented. By my count he has won 9 times with three different dogs. Russell has again proven himself to be Australia’s top handler/trainer. Congratulations.
One of Russell’s previous National winners, 14.15.16.17.19 NTL. R.T. CH. GR. R.T. CH. ADDERSLOT CHIEF CM. DM was this year recognised as an “Outstanding Dog” in the National RAFT Hall of Fame.
SA is in the unusual position of having arguably the two best Retrieving dogs in Australia with “Guss” & “Maggie”.
As stated earlier we need to run the trials on properties that have suitable running water, and as some of the retrieves can be up to 150 metres in length, large areas are needed. For many years our trials have only existed because of the generosity of property owners who allow us to roam (and even camp). We lost one traditional property this year when a change in farming practices resulted in government red tape that forbade us the areas we needed. These properties are getting harder to find. We would like to hear from anybody who thinks they may know of a property that may be suitable. The way most triallers cheerfully helped out with stewarding at trials was most encouraging and necessary for the sport’s survival.
The low number of SA judges is a continuing problem. We are indebted to interstate judges who supported us this year.
A major task this year has been the review of the rules for the conduct of Retrieving Trials for Gundogs. I thank those who participated by suggesting changes and/or responding to the 55 pages of proposals. We are still waiting for Dogs Australia to officially advise us of what the new rules will be. Thank you to the RAFT Advisory members and all those who have supported retrieving in South Australia this year.

2024 EARTHDOG ADVISORY REPORT
2024 has seen the Earthdog Advisory Committee continue to provide earthdog tests in South Australia, as well as training in the sport. Throughout the year, the Earthdog Advisory Committee held 3 test days totalling 7 tests. Each test included the opportunity to compete in Strong Dog.
The Committee also supported the Terrier Club of SA Inc in holding 2 test days totalling 6 tests.
On average, there were 9 entries per test. The pass rate across entries was 42%.
We had three breeds partake in the sport throughout the year: Border Terriers, Jack Russell Terriers, and Miniature Pinschers. We also had various associate dogs compete. This is less diverse than breed entries we have had in previous years.
Over the course of the year, 8 South Australian dogs earned their earthdog titles. We had:
• 2 Earthdog Grand Champions,
• 1 Master Earthdog title,
• 2 Senior Earthdog title,
• 1 Junior Earthdog title, and
• 1 Earthdog Instinct Certificate title, and
• 1 Strong Dog Instinct title.
I would like to draw the attention to the 2 dogs who have achieved their earthdog grand champion title. South Australia has seen a proportionately high number of earthdog grand champions in our state, indicating the quality of earthdogs in South Australia.
Training
The committee ran two training days on Saturday 20 April and Sunday 21 April. These days were well attended and generated income for the committee.
Gawler Dog Training Club also provided a four-week course in Gawler in September. There were six dogs who participated. It should be noted that this training proved to be a good fundraiser for the club, which may be a consideration for other clubs who may be looking to provide training in this sport. The advisory committee leant the club the earthdog tunnels for this course in the hope that it would ultimately attract more individuals to compete in earthdog.
2025 Plans
While we had hoped the fencing would be completed in 2024, we are now hoping that 2025 will be the year of our new earthdog area! The quote has been approved by the Dogs SA Council and it’s just a matter of confirming details with our contractor. We plan for it to be completed before the season starts in May.
At this stage, we have no applicants for new judges. For anyone who is eligible we would like to encourage you to become trainee judges. We are also always looking for more helpers for test days, especially in putting tunnels out and returning them to the shed.
The AC is pleased to advise that we have the full compliment of Committee 7 members, this includes a number of new members who we are very pleased to have onboard.
