As this is my last Presidents Report for 2024, I would like to thank on behalf of Council and the membership, the staff of the Dogs SA office for their tremendous service they have provided to the membership of Dogs SA throughout 2024. They have at all times been courteous and efficient and willing to assist. It pleases me greatly to see the accolades they receive from members on Face Book for the work they do, keep it up they deserve it.
Over the past 12 months there has been a lot of discontent amongst some of the affiliates which has required Dogs SA to intervene and try to get the Affiliates back on track. In most instances this has worked but does take up a lot of time and effort on behalf of the office and Council. Club members and committees need to be mindful of what they are there for. Promotion of the breed or sporting discipline and building relationships with like minded people. The club or committee is not yours; it belongs to all.
Face Book is becoming the scourge of our hobby with people posting some very detrimental comments about others. The office does monitor a number of sites and has requested that posts or comments are removed. That is a polite way of letting the writer know that what has been written may be in breach of the Dogs SA Media policy and is not acceptable. Additionally, if you are an admin or moderator for a site you may also be responsible for posts and comments on those sites.
The Conformation Judges Training Panel conducted the theory exam for aspirants and trainees with a respectable pass rate. Well done to those who passed and hope you have as much success in the practical examination in December.
SA’s own Champion Junior Handler Deana Musolino, who for the second year in a row won the National Junior Handler Final held in Brisbane in October, will now go on to represent Australia at Crufts in 2025. On behalf of Dogs SA, I would like to wish Deana all the best of luck at Crufts and not to put the pressure on you again, Australia will be watching.
I attended the SA Progressive Business Policy Development Forum during the month. The forum was primarily around government policy and it’s effects on businesses in SA. Guest speakers were Hon Susan Close MP and Kyam Mahar MLC. I had the opportunity to ask Susan, who is also the Minister for the Environment, where the Animal Welfare Act is administered. I also asked her in a private discussion about the proposed amendments and what can still be done about them. Susan has requested further information so we will put that together and send to her.
On behalf of Council I would like to thank the Executive Officer Cheryl Currie and her exceptional staff for the support they have shown Council and would like to wish them a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. Additionally on behalf of Council and the Office I would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. I look forward to seeing you all in 2025. In the words of the President Elect Donald Trump “Lets make our sport great again,” together we can do it. Brian Parker Mob: 0417724223

Scale of Charges for 2025 –Individual Puppy
As from 1st January 2025, the Litter Registration, Individual Puppy fee will increase if the litter has not been submitted by 6 months old.
• Individual Puppy $47.00
• Individual Puppy over 6 months of age $94.00
Currently Dogs SA is the only state not to have increasing fees the older the Litter is at time of registration.
There are breeders that are selling their puppies and not submitting the transfers to Dogs SA Office to be transferred to the new owners within 14 days.
The incentive to register your Litter within the required period should be far more attractive to pay the normal fee. Dogs SA hope to deter the number of breeders breaching the rule to transfer within 14 days of disposition.
In addition, we are hopeful that the purchaser is more likely to receive their Certified Pedigree within the required amount of time. This provides predictability for the purchaser when they buy from a Pedigree Dog Breeder. If you are currently doing all the right things and submitting your paperwork as per the rules, nothing will change for you. Currently there is approximately 15% that are not registering their litters before 6 months of age.

Each application must be accompanied by the application fee. This fee will be refunded if the application is not approved. The timelines in this Section shall not come into force until 1st January 2024.
From 1 January 2025, applications will be approved at the October 2025 Board meeting. Once approved by our Board they will then be forwarded to the A2O Secretariat for their approval.
This will mean that A2O Shows to be held between January and December of the following year will be required to be submitted prior to the October Board meeting the previous year, i.e., 2026 shows are to be submitted when expressions of interest are called for in early 2025.

Attention Member Bodies and Show Secretaries
Our previous advice concerning the contracting of Judges from FCI National Canine Organisations (NCO’s) to judge at FCI International Shows has raised queries from a number of Member Bodies as to how the new regulation will affect overseas FCI judges being contracted to non FCI Championship Shows in Australia.
Approvals for overseas judges are granted in accordance with Dogs Australia Regulations 9 Non Resident Judges Section 2, which sets out a number of scenarios where judges may be approved to judge breeds in Australia which they are not approved for in their country of residence, which are used for judges from the UK, America and Canada, however FCI judges are bound by FCI Judges Regulation 6 e A judge may under no circumstances agree to judge a breed at any show for which he is not approved by his own national organization. The same applies for judging at Best in Group and Best in Show level. This means that with FCI judges we can only approve them for breeds that their own NCO approves them for.
This presents a challenge for the Dogs Australia Office as many applications for FCI judges are supported by letters from their NCO approving them for Best in Show, Best in Group or breeds which are not listed in their entry in the FCI Judges Directory. Although the new FCI regulation pertains only to FCI International Shows we believe that the same criteria should be applied for Australian Championship Shows. We have written advice from the FCI that if there are discrepancies between the FCI Directory and the NCO’s statement, Dogs Australia should advise the NCO that their information is different from what is reflected in the Judges Directory and that, according to FCI, we must follow the Judges Directory.

HARRIER
History
Sources have widely conflicting stories about the origins of this breed. According to one, the earliest Harrier types were crossed with Bloodhounds, the Talbot Hound, and even the Basset Hound. According to another, the breed was probably developed from crosses of the English Foxhound with Fox Terrier and Greyhound. And yet another, the Harrier is said to be simply a bred-down version of the English Foxhound, which apart from a few finer points it is. The first Harrier pack in England was established by Sir Elias de Midhope in 1260 and spread out as a hunting dog throughout the west of England and into Wales. Although having been around for all these years, the breed was finally only recognised by the Kennel Club in 2019, and first shown at Crufts in 2020.
In any case, today’s Harrier is between the Beagle and English Foxhound in size and was developed primarily to hunt hares, though the breed has also been used in fox hunting. The name, Harrier, reveals the breed’s specialty. The Harrier has a long history of popularity as a working pack dog in England.
Appearance
The points of the modern Harrier are very similar to those of the Foxhound. The Harrier however is smaller than the Foxhound: the most popular size is 19 to 21 inches (48.26 to 53.34 cm) Proportion - is off square. The Harrier is slightly longer from point of shoulder to rear projection of the
upper thigh than from withers to ground. He is active, well balanced, full of strength and quality.
The main differences with the Foxhound, apart from the size, is firstly the expression, which is described as bold in the Harrier rather than keen in the Foxhound. This is because of the very prominent eyebrows in the Harrier. The second difference is the tail, which is slightly lower set than the Foxhound and carried from between 12 o’clock and 3 o’clock, so generally carried slightly away from the body.
Temperament & Suitability
Friendly and not aggressive. Essentially a Pack Hound.
The Harrier is cheerful, sweet-tempered, tolerant of people, and it is excellent with children. This pack dog is good with other dogs but should be supervised with non-canine pets unless it is raised with them from puppyhood. It prefers life in a pack with people, dogs, or both. This active dog likes to go exploring, sniffing, and trailing, so be sure to keep it on a leash or in a safe enclosed area. Some Harriers like to bay. They are a high energy dog, that requires regular exercise, whether that be just going for a walk or playing with family members, which they love to do. It is important that they do get this, so they are not too mischievous around the yard.

NUTRITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR BREEDING BITCH DURING GESTATION
WHAT, WHEN & WHY
Dr Julie Summerfield Scientific Services Veterinarian Royal Canin ANZ
From the moment a puppy is conceived, all throughout their life, nutrition plays a vital role. Nutritional requirements do vary and change with age, breed, life stage and lifestyle. Reproductive status also needs to be considered as pregnant bitches have very specific needs for their health and the health of their unborn puppies.
There are two distinct phases to a bitch’s roughly 63-day gestation. Firstly, we have the embryonic phase for the first two thirds (6 weeks) of the gestation period. In this time, the cells of the embryo differentiate to form nerves, blood cells, skin cells, muscle cells, etc. The final trimester of gestation (week 6-9) is the foetal phase where rapid growth occurs in the foetus. These two phases have different nutritional requirements that need to be met, for the bitch to remain healthy and avoid whelping and neonatal problems down the track.
The energy requirements of the bitch in the first stage remain relatively unchanged. In the second stage, after day 42, there is a marked increase in energy requirements as this corresponds with marked foetal growth, while lactation has the highest demand for energy.
If the bitch if fed too much energy, and becomes overweight, this can be implicated in such problems from infertility, as well as whelping complications such as poor uterine contractility and an increased risk of a caesarean requirement. This dystocia can in turn lead to increased neonatal mortality.
It is important to ensure the body condition score of bitches remains ideal (4-5/9 BCS) during heat and gestation to help avoid this. Bitches should be regularly monitored throughout pregnancy for BCS to ensure their nutrition is adequate but not excessive.
Studies in puppies have also demonstrated a beneficial effect on learning abilities and cognitive function (trainability) with DHA supplementation. These important nutrients can also assist with the digestive and immune functions.
Antioxidants are another important component when considering diet as they can protect against cell damage and include vitamins C, & E, Lutein and Taurine. Beta-carotene, also with antioxidant potential, can protect the DNA and tissues, as a precursor to Vitamin A has important functions for embryo nerve, muscle and skin development. They are also thought to have a role in progesterone secretion, preparing the uterus for implantation as well as helping to maintain gestation.
An important aspect to consider with nutrition in pregnancy is palatability as pregnant bitches often go off their food. They may require digestive support in the form of a highly digestible diet, with a balance of fibres to support optimal gut health and function, that provides all the required energy and nutrition tailored for pregnancy as well as high palatability for bitches who may be experiencing some inappetence that may be associated with hormonal changes.
To avoid any further digestive upsets, we always suggest a gradual transition from one diet to another over 7 days, which is why the recommendation for Starter diets will appear earlier at day 35 (a week before day 42).
ncy for e.
We recommend a tailored diet specially formulated for breeding bitches from heat to day 42 of pregnancy where the bitch should then be transitioned on to a Starter diet for the last trimester.
There are specific nutrients that are critical for fertility, embryonic and foetal development, as well as neonatal health once born.
Folic acid is a B Group Vitamin important for the development of the nervous system. During embryonic development, folic acid requirements significantly increase. Deficiency can easily develop in the bitch if she does not receive adequate amounts, which can lead to increases in the risk of neural tube defects such as cleft palate, the most common congenital abnormality in puppies as well as dystocia.
mbryonic orn ent of acid can lead t ell as th to close tween the around eferably hown gnificantly and EPA any cids ervous
A cleft palate occurs due to a failure of the roof of the mouth to close during development in the womb. This results in a hole between the mouth and the nasal cavity. Normally the palate will close around day 35, so supplementation needs to occur prior to this preferably from as soon as the bitch comes into heat. Studies have shown that folic acid supplementation during embryo development, significantly reduces the risk of cleft palate incidence.
Omega 3 fatty acids such as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) are very important nutrients for many functions in the body, including reproduction. These fatty acids are critical in the growth and development of the central nervous system, as well as vision for the embryo and foetus.
Royal Canin HT42D (named because of the time it is recommended to feed) is specifically formulated for Breeding adult breeding bitches over 10 kg from the 1st day of heat to the 42nd day of gestation.
HT42D is formulated for Reproductive health with a unique nutritional profile to meet bitch reproductive cycle 1st stage needs: from heat to 42nd day of gestation. It contains added betacarotene to help prepare the bitch for optimal reproductive performance. Enhanced folic acid and fatty acids to support healthy embryo and fœtal development, and appropriate energy content.
SUMMARY
The puppies brain development can be assisted due also to the enriched DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, which is scientifically proven to support a puppy’s brain and visual development during gestation. Combination of prebiotics & highly digestible proteins help to promote a healthy balance of intestinal microbiota for digestive health & microbiome support.
THE BITCH ENERGY NEEDS
•Body weight of the pregnant bitch should not change much in the first 42days.
•Puppies gain 70% of their weight in the last trimester, this is when the bitch needs increased energy density in the diet.
•Energy requirement will increase by about 10%each week in the final trimester.
•At the time of whelping, the bitches body weight should have increased by 15-25%.
•Food intake becomes limited as the growing uterus compresses the stomach; in the final trimester it is recommended to switch to a “Royal Canin Starter diet.”
•An adult maintenance diet should not be fed during gestation as there will be energy and other nutrient deficiencies, however a growth or Starter diet fed for the whole pregnancy will lead to excess energy and fat accumulation.
•Lactation is the only stage where ad lib feeding is recommended for the bitch to accommodate for the enormous energy expenditure in this reproductive phase.
