An update on what has been happening around our Association. Council is investigating the replacement of the ring lighting at David Roche Park as the existing lighting is more than 15 years old and is starting to decrease in luminance from what is required for our activities. Although quotes were obtained, we are waiting on whether Dogs SA can receive a Government grant to install more energy efficient LED lighting. There are also a number of other minor upgrades occurring with the expansion of the Earth Dog Area and the planting of the garden along the West boundary.
Council in setting its 2025 budget recognizes the financial stress many are going through and in particular our Affiliate clubs. For this reason, Council approved a rise in fees of CPI +1% for administrative functions such as memberships, litter registrations etc. The fees for Affiliates (eg. levies, ground hire) will remain the same which is the second consecutive year Council has been in this position to try and assist the Affiliates to remain viable without increasing their fees substantially. Members still need to be mindful the cost of holding events is still rising and it will be inevitable that Affiliates will need to pass on these costs.
The Dog and Cat Management (Breeder Reform) Amendment Bill 2024 is still making it’s way through the hollows of the South Australian Government. We are still advocating for changes to the Bill however we are not getting much traction with the minister responsible who is the Deputy Premier, Susan Close. We are however getting some interest from other members of Government and the opposition. I urge you all to keep writing to your members of parliament explaining the proposed bill will have little to no effect on Puppy Farming in this state and will only hurt those that are doing the right thing such as Dogs SA registered breeders.
I attended a Business in Sport Forum hosted by SA Progressive Business, also attended by Hon Stephen Mulligan (SA Treasurer) and Hon Katrine Hildyard (Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing). The focus of the meeting was on the economic and social benefits of major sporting events being brought to SA. Although not the focus I did have the opportunity to bring the Ministers attention the plight of the smaller and less known sports in SA such as those conducted by Dogs SA and its Affiliates. This did get the attention of many in the audience including the Ministers and their advisors who were also in the forum. The ministers provided the forum with a number of suggestions for grants which are soon to be released and we were given the contact details for those responsible for approving the grants. At the end of the forum, I did get to express my concerns over the proposed Amendment Bill and was asked to again put these in writing to the Ministers.
As we are starting to come into the warmer months and many of our activities slow down, now is a good time to conduct any inspections and maintenance needed on both our personal and club equipment in readiness for 2025.

State Champions for 2024
The 2024 SA State Obedience Championships were held on 14 &15 September at the SA Obedience Dog Club grounds.
The Obedience Advisory Committee thanks the competitors who again have supported the event with increasing numbers of entries and we welcomed interstate competitors who made the effort to compete. To all who had some success over the two days well done, to all competitors thank you for making this event a success. It was great to see a number of new faces gain State Champion titles in their class.
For the efforts of the hard-working OAC members for delivering the event, to our judges and stewards for their support and the competitors who assisted in any way we thank you.
To the SA Obedience Dog Club, we thank you for the use of your facilities and support in delivering a great service to the competitors and the event.

Scent Work has been alive and thriving in SA for two and a half years! The lengthy list of teams’ successes recorded since our first trials in April 2022, shows just how popular this sport has become and how much support there has been for those who have worked so hard to promote Scent Work.
2024 has been another very busy year for Scent Work with an increasing number of Trials, Workshops and Demonstrations. Up to the end of October, there have been 27 trials in South Australia, including the Scent Work Advisory Committee running a successful 3 day & 2 venue trial in June which attracted entries from both WA and Victoria. Huge thanks to all those who volunteer to steward, without whom the trials would not take place, and to all the clubs and trainers, who have added Scent Work training and trials to their regular activities. SA now has 11 judges, with more currently in training.
2024 saw the first Scent Work Rules review – a long and drawnout process involving many zoom meetings to produce the revised version. Thank you to Narelle Medlicott for her stamina and hard work as the South Australian representative on this committee. Apart from the inevitable tweaking of the existing rules, the biggest change has been in introduction of an extra layer of difficulty – the introduction of an Ultimate class. This integrated search includes 3 of the 4 Elements, an unknown number of hides and a time limit of between 7 and 15 minutes. Definitely a test of focus and
stamina for both dog and handler. In addition to Trials, we have been invited to present demonstrations at several public events. In July, a team representing Dogs SA again presented successful demonstrations on each day of the Adelaide Animal Expo to an interested audience.
In September we made a return visit to the Adelaide Royal Show to present two demonstrations. These again attracted a great deal of enthusiastic attention. Thank you to Plush Puppy for sponsoring the team by providing all the boxes used in our Royal Show demonstrations and thank you to Ingrid Matschke for the photos of the demos.
A Dogs SA team have also been invited to present demonstrations at the Callington Show on 27 October 2024.
I am very grateful to all those who volunteer to take part in these demonstration events and in particular to our presenter Kate Lloyd who makes the event so accessible to the watching public. It is a measure of how much our dogs enjoy the Scent Work game, they are so entirely focused on the task in hand, that despite the extraordinary distractions the demonstration environments present, they completely ignore their surroundings.

Dogs Australia use of Ramp & Tables effective 1st January 2024
At the recent Dogs Australia Board meeting the following points were noted in relation to the use of ramps effective 01 January 2024:
1.Ramps are not mandatory and will be at the sole discretion of the judge.
2.Only ramp and ramp optional breeds to be judged on the ramp.
3.Once a breed has commenced, the entire breed will be judged in the same manner (eg ramp, table or ground, excluding babies).
4.Dogs Australia judges contract will be amended to provide an area for the judge to indicate if a ramp is required (for ramp breeds)
5.If ramps are not available in the location the club hosting the event is to notify the judge.

Affenpinscher
History
Affenpinschers can trace their roots back to Germany in the 1600s. They helped to exterminate rodents in stables and in households and were beloved family pets. The breed actively protected the farms’ supply of winter food. Affenpinscher is a German word that means monkey dog or ape terrier.
The Affenpinschers breed’s origins are somewhat shrouded in mystery, as the breed’s exact lineage is not entirely clear. However, it is widely believed that the Affenpinschers breed was developed in the 17th century.
By the late 19th century, the Affenpinschers breed had become a popular pet among the European nobility. These dogs were often seen in the laps of ladies of high society, and their distinctive looks and playful personalities made them a favourite among dog lovers.
The Affenpinscher once existed in two sizes of which the smaller survives today.
Appearance
The Affenpinscher is a small, sturdy breed, that have a rough, wiry coat, and a distinctive monkey-like appearance. Although small, not delicate in any way.
The Affenpinscher is between 22-27cm with a short, straight back.
They come in a range of colours including black, black and tan, and red and grey. Black is preferred but grey shading is permitted.

The Affenpinscher needs little grooming. A brush once a week, along with a regular bath is sufficient. The breed’s coat may be trimmed every couple of months, only around the feet and eyes, to keep it tidy.
Temperament
The Affenpinscher is great for families with older children, great companion for active elderly people. They can be carried anywhere and are happy in small areas. It is excellent indoors, as it is only a little breed and sheds a very small amount of hair.
They are intelligent and easy to house train. They are very loyal to their owners and have little interest in strangers. The breed is alert and fearless, to the point of having little sense of size with other larger dogs.
The Affenpinscher’s journey from a practical ratting dog to a beloved companion is a testament to the breed’s adaptability and charm. Whether they’re hunting vermin or cuddling on a lap, the Affenpinschers have proven themselves to be versatile and endearing dogs that have earned their place in the hearts of dog lovers around the world.

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT DIET FROM WEANING
At 3 to 4 weeks of age, puppy’s’ nutritional needs begin to exceed what can be provided by milk alone, and the nutritional weaning phase should begin. The transition to solid foods should occur gradually. Transitioning from milk to solid food with commercial diets designed for weaning puppies is advised to make this transition even more gradual.
Dry Starter diets are rehydratable with water to make a gruel (1:2 dry food to water) or porridge consistency. Soft mousse Starter diets also bridge the texture gap between milk and dry kibble. Cow’s milk should not be used because it contains high lactose concentrations and can cause diarrhea. Milk replacer can be used for the first days of transition, but it has a higher energy density, which can lead to excess weight gain; water is therefore preferred for kibble rehydration.
During the first week of weaning, milk will remain the major food source. Milk production will gradually decline as the puppy begins to eat solid food and are progressively separated from their mother. The deciduous teeth erupt around 21 to 35 days after birth. Thus, by 5 weeks of age, solid foods should be readily consumed and by 6 to 8 weeks of age, weaning is complete. Daily requirements should be divided into four meals minimum to avoid overload & diarrhea.

During the first week of weaning , milk replacer can be used instead of water.
The nutrient-dense diet that was fed during gestation and lactation should continue as the main diet for at least 3 weeks post-weaning to ensure adequate nutrient replenishment of the bitch. Animals in poor body condition at breeding and whelping may require longer replenishment periods.
All puppies are affected by the immunity gap, a critical period in the transition between the immunity passively transferred from the mother and the development of their own immunity following vaccination. Maternally derived antibodies (MDA) are antibodies against pathogens which bitches have been exposed to or vaccinated against, which are transferred to their offspring in the colostrum, in the first 2 days after whelping.
These antibodies can protect puppies in the initial weeks of life, but they also interfere with vaccination since high MDA levels can prevent the onset of an active immune response. MDA levels decrease over time in the first few months. The immunity gap can last several weeks, usually between 4 & 12 weeks of age, but the period when it occurs is not predictable, and puppies may be susceptible to infection with pathogens during the decline phase of MDA. This is a particular period in their early life, known as immunity gap or window of susceptibility, during which their MDA is still able to interfere with vaccination but not enough to prevent active infection.
Nutrition plays a key role in the healthy development of growing puppies after weaning. The goal is to adequately support the increased nutritional demands of growth while taking care to avoid any excess that could lead to obesity or developmental disease.
Both nutrient deficiencies and excesses can have long-lasting negative effects. Increased levels of essential nutrients during growth such as protein, amino acids, fat, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals are required to support organs and tissue development.
Calcium is a key nutrient required in increased amounts to support skeletal growth and development. However, calcium levels must be tightly controlled to avoid developmental bone disease in large and giant breed puppies. Excess dietary calcium can cause abnormal bone growth.
Essential fatty acid requirements are also increased during development. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid, is known to be especially important for retinal and brain development. Dietary enrichment with DHA has been shown to promote improved learning and memory in puppies and can be beneficial at increased intakes during gestation and the initial months of growth.
Immune support is also an important function of an optimal Starter diet as the immune system is still developing and antioxidants such as Vitamin E & C can assist.
During growth, the gastrointestinal tract is immature and can be more prone to gastrointestinal disturbances:
•Feeding a diet with highly digestible protein sources can help to improve nutrient utilization and stool quality.
•Including fermentable fibres (such as beet pulp and psyllium) and prebiotics (such as fructo-oligosaccharides) can also help to support the gastrointestinal microbiome and overall gastrointestinal health during development.
•In dogs, growth rates vary greatly between breed sizes, with small breeds reaching maturity at 10 months of age, while giant breeds (such as the Great Dane) may not achieve maturity until 24 months of age.
