President’s Report

By now everyone would be aware that the ANKC Ltd regulation into DNA Parentage has been rescinded by the Board of the ANKC Ltd. Whether we approve or not it is a decision of that Board. There is a proposal for the Canine HEALTH AND Welfare Committee to formulate another DNA Parentage system to take its place. The DOGS SA Council will be considering if DOGS SA should now proceed with a similar system to DOGS QLD to Parentage Prove Mains Registered puppies prior to issuing a Certified Pedigree. At the moment ANKC Pedigrees are no better than any of the other registration bodies as there is no validation conducted. Any decision to adopt a scheme will go to the member for their imput. Council at the June meeting voted to replace the aging evaporative air conditioner in the Marsula Brine Rooms with 2 reverse cycle air conditioning units. This will negate the need for clubs to bring in old non effective heaters during the winter months. Affiliates will need to be mindful that these are now refrigerated units and need the doors to be kept closed for them to work effectively with the best temperature settings to be between 20 – 24 degrees. Further enhancements have been made to the grounds with the bowling green being transformed into an off lead area for members to use. Please be respectful of others when using the area as it is for all. There will be some basic rules posted on the entrances to the area and poo bags will be provided so please ensure you pick up after your dog. Over the next few months Council will be discussing ways of promoting ourselves to the public and by that I mean all disciplines. Whilst some of the new disciplines are growing other long established ones are dying, is this because they are too stuck in their ways and are becoming closed shops? A comment that becoming more and more frequently used. Also how do we attract new members and then keep them. It is getting harder to own dogs and in many of our sports you need more than 1 or 2 dogs to be successful and to continue in that sport. If you have any ideas please speak with the Councillors who can bring them to Council for discussion. This is the second year of using DACO for dog and breeder registration and although there still appears to be some issues by all reports the registration has gone significantly smoother than 2018. There are plans to refine the system even further particularly in relation to breeder registrations where DOGS SA is concerned. We will keep all members informed as these improvements are implemented. The Adelaide Royal Show will again be on us at the end of the month and although entries are slightly down on 2018 the entry is still very significant and worthy of a Royal branding. The Royal has been aware of some of the issues raised during the entry period particularly with the parking and will continue to fine tune it. For all those competing at the Royal and any other event just remember to have fun and remember this is a hobby and hobbies are meant to be enjoyed.

Applications to sit for Theory Examinations to be held on Wednesday 21 August 2019 must be lodged with the Dogs SA Office by Friday 09 August 2019.

Clubs must provide at least five people with three preparing food and serving in the canteen and two cooking and serving the BBQ.

Applications will only be accepted from those Trainee/Aspirant Judges who have met the required criteria.

RESCISSION OF PARENTAGE PROVEN FOR PARENTAGE The Board of Directors at their meeting held in Melbourne on 22 June, 2019 resolved effective immediately to rescind the decision to implement compulsory DNA parentage testing on 1 January 2020. LIFTING OF SUSPENSION With reference to our circular 42/2018 dated 13/06/2018, the Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen (VDH) informs the FCI members and contract partners that Mr Wilfried Peper’s suspension as VDH international and national show judge has been lifted since 10/06/2019.

Fertilised Ova (10/02) Litters produced using fertilised ova are to be registered using the standard Member Body litter registration form and must be accompanied by a declaration by the breeder identifying the donor dam, the semen donor dog, and the surrogate bitch. The surrogate bitch must be registered in the breeder’s name unless a valid legal contract or special application provides otherwise. Breeders are to maintain records relating to the collection, fertilisation, implantation and ownership of ova. Breeders are advised to record a DNA profile, or store a sample of tissue, blood or saliva, for the donor bitch, the semen donor dog, and the surrogate bitch. The registration of a dog from fertilised ova will have the letters FO in brackets after the name. Where the fertilised ova was imported and then implanted, the letters Imp and the country abbreviation in brackets will be added.”

Parentage Proven for Registration (Added 06/18, 5.1) All puppies whelped after 01 January 2020 and being registered on the ANKC Ltd database as Main Registered are to be Parentage Proven by DNA. All results are to use the International Society for Animal Genetic (ISAG) marker and are to be submitted to the member body prior to registration. Where a breeder makes application to upgrade a dog to the Main Register then the dog is to be Parentage Proven as per 6.12.1 prior to being upgraded. Collection and testing of the DNA sample is to be conducted pursuant to protocols at Section 2 of these Regulations. All dogs, frozen semen and Fertilised Ova imported into Australia from 01 January 2020 are to be Parentage Proven in accordance with this section. All Frozen semen registered after 01 January 2020 is to be Parentage Proven in accordance with this section.”

Retrieving news I recently had a call from an interstater wanting to buy a Retrieving Rules book. As with all disciplines these are no longer generally available, however the Rules are available for download from the ANKC Website http://ankc.org. au/AboutUs/?id=1253 – scroll down to RETRIEVING & FIELD then Rules for the conduct of Retrieving Trials for Gundogs. The submissions from all of the States about changing the Rules will have been discussed at the National RAFT in July and will be promulgated as soon as possible; they become effective on a date to be decided by ANKC.

We had a visit from a Whistling Kite at the Golden Retriever Club Retrieving Trial when a competitor was competing on a run with a double mark. The Kite obviously saw a piece of game being thrown and while the competitor’s dog was out getting the first bird, the Kite collected the second item of game and took off with it. Interstater, John Stott, was on the thrower and luckily saw the kite zoom in and collect the pigeon. Naturally the dog got a re-run. I don’t know of any other sport that has so many outside “distractions” as retrieving, even when I was tracking the odd roo, lizard or herd of sheep didn’t seem to cause as much disturbance to competitors as the creatures we come across in retrieving. We are looking for helpers to assist at the Dogs SA State

I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16) I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases. (a) I shall not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control being mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/15) (b) I understand that to mate the same bitch in consecutive seasons is not a recommended breeding practice and should only be undertaken in exceptional circumstances. (c) If exceptional circumstances exist which I consider make it necessary to mate a bitch causing it to whelp in consecutive seasons, I will not mate that bitch for a period of twelve months from the date of the birth of the puppies from that second season. (d) I shall not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/ sister matings. I shall be fully aware that puppies as a result of such matings will not be registered without first gaining approval from the

SACA for the mating for scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons. (01/12) (e) All bitches eight years of age and over at the time of a mating must have a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health at the time of breeding. This certificate must be presented at the time of registration of the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as being within three months prior to the mating. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19) I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12) I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA INC REPORT FROM DR TONY READ (Veterinary Opthalmologist)

On Saturday 15 June, the Golden Retriever Club of South Australia Inc., conducted an All Breeds Eye Clinic on behalf of DogsSA. The Clinic attracted an attendance of 43 dogs, a breakdown of the breeds and numbers can be seen at the bottom of this page. The Golden Retriever Club will hold another clinic next year provided that a suitable date can be found. We advertise the Clinic early so that owners can organise themselves and sort out which dogs they wish to have examined and get their paperwork in early. There is quite a lot of organisation and administrative work that needs to be sorted out and when people leave things to the last couple of days it puts extra pressure on all concerned. Below is the report that was received by the Club from Dr Read. We once again thank DogsSA for providing the advertising and the use of the Marsula Brine Room for the Clinic.

AGILITY NEWS In 2019 the AAC chose to conduct the Dogs SA State Agility Championships outside the metro area for the very first time. The venue chosen was the Riverland Exhibition Centre, Barmera. This area provided plenty of area for people to camp on the grounds and access the many powered sites available. The feedback from those that attended including, including several interstate people, was what a great choice of facility to conduct this event. The event was over the long weekend of the 8th and 9th of June. The weather gods were generally kind with just the odd shower hanging around over the weekend.

On Saturday morning we started with Games and Open Championships which utilised the four available rings. In these classes there was only one round held and as such the qualifying winner from the morning session were awarded the State Champion for 2019 for their class. Two Agility and Jumping trials were held Saturday afternoon and one more Sunday morning thus giving three opportunities for people and dogs to qualify for the finals. With just under 600 entries it was a busy weekend for all involved, but it was a credit to everyone that the event went so smoothly with many people pitching in and helping out when needed. It takes a great deal of work and generosity of many to make an event of this size such a great success. Our generous sponsors of our event were K9 Dynamics, Adelaide Dog Mobility & Rehabilitation and Tri-Pawd Tug Toys. The Riverland Dog Training and Kennel club were such a massive supporter of the event and for a small country club did themselves proud and co-operated with the AAC every step of the way. The Gawler Dog Training club, Vanessa Loughlin and Blue Lakes Obedience Dog Club kindly provided equipment for use. All the Judges, Stewards, AAC members and Elaine Cox as the DogsSA representative were great support. Also last but not least the competitors for being such good sports all weekend. Congratulations to all Heats and Finals winners and other competitors for taking Judgesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; decisions in such good spirits. We look forward to the running of the next State Championships. The AAC would like to note that Vicki Josephs who had previously been on a suspension from Judging has now served the term of that suspension and is now available for appointments again.
