ppointed by the prestigious CRN shipyard in Ancona to design a new yacht on an existing platform for the Explorer category, the studio founded by architects Gianni and Paola Zuccon presents Teseo, a 50 meter semi-custom Expedition yacht available with three different layouts to suit all kinds of needs. A recurrent element in Studio Zuccon International Project’s design work, the theme of timeless go-anywhere design is back again in the new Teseo project. The Riva 76’ is born

R

iva announces the new Riva 76’ coupé, already under construction at the Ferretti Group plant in La Spezia. The new Riva creation will make its debut in September at the Ferretti Group Première event in Montecarlo, then at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2015. At Riva, coupé is the synonym of a sporty and yet stylish yacht,

bound to immediately become a cult, the heir of a history of success. 1. Q: What is your favorite water adventure that you’ve done from your book? A: My favorite so far is WHITEWATER RAFTING THE FUTALEUFU RIVER IN CHILE - the adventure I have just done. The challenge of rafting class 5 and class 6 rapids is epic, but achievable as a team; the scenery in Patagonia is wild and beautiful. Evergreen forests flank the jade-colored river on both sides and the distant mountains with their glacier tops are an amazing canvas for the light. 2. Q: What made you want to write this book? A: Getting wet and having fun in the water needn’t involve rowing an entire ocean. In writing ‘50 Water Adventures...’ I hope to inspire others and offer a resource for those already inspired and looking for a place to start. The question I asked myself was, if you could do each water adventure only once, where would be the ultimate place to do it? 3. Q: What advice do you have for readers who would like to try some of these adventures? A: Dream big! Get started!

A

lmost 200 boats took part in the 88th Bacardi Cup and the 6th Bacardi Miami Sailing Week (BMSW) presented by EFG Bank. The event, held in Coconut Grove, Florida, was coordinated by the Coral Reef Yacht Club in collaboration with the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club with the help of the U.S. Sailing Center and Shake-A-Leg Miami. Miami’s outstanding racing conditions and elite competition brought in competitors from 15 foreign nations, including Italy, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Ukraine, Australia, Sweden, Argentina, and Great Britain. The event began with the racing of the Bacardi Cup for the Star Class, and then the J/70, Viper 640, VX One and M32 classes joined the Stars to race the 6th BMSW on Biscayne Bay. After the races, sailors got together at Kennedy Park, the Bacardi Village Hospitality Center, where they enjoyed great Bacardi Rum, food and music. Bacardi Miami Sailing Week is not just competitions and fun, it also benefits several charities such as Shake-A-Leg Miami, Team Paradise and Sailing Heals. harleston, South Carolina, a historic, beautiful city with cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pre-civil war era houses, recently played host to the 20th edition of the Sperry Charleston Race Week—a regatta with over 2,500 sailors from all over the globe—many including world, Olympic and national champions. In the past 20 years, this race has become one of the largest regattas of its kind in both North and South America, and is open to sailboats 19 to 80 feet in length. Offshore classes accept boats from 24 to 80 feet capable of sailing asea. According to Dan Dickison, Media Director of Sperry Charleston Race Week, “the first regatta in 1996 had only 29 boats entered. This year nearly 300 boats participated.” In 1996 members of the Charleston Ocean Racing Association (CORA) merged both the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Associations PHRF

Championships and the Charleston Palmetto Cup to form Charleston Race Week. The event is owned and managed by Charleston Ocean Racing Association and supported by Sperry and numerous other sponsors. According to Dr. Steven Shapiro, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Roger St. Francis Healthcare in Charleston, a regatta sponsor, Charleston Race Week went one step further ensuring that qualified medical personnel were not only onshore, but on the water should a medical emergency occur. A vessel monitoring the traffic on the race committee VHF channels was ready to dispatch a team if medical assistance was needed, resulting in potentially saving someone’s life. Four medical boats were out on the water, three with EMT teams on board and another one serving as the mothership to coordinate their activity. For the past three years, Charleston Race Week has partnered with Sailors for the Sea in their Clean Regattas Program. The 2015 edition of this regatta received Gold Level Certification for their participation in this program. The program’s main objective is to reduce carbon emissions, which reduces ocean acidification. Some of the ways that members of the Sperry Charleston Race Week participated in a “clean” regatta were by pledging to install a renewable energy source, not to idle boat engines and to use copper-free bottom paint. charlestonraceweek.com sailorsforthesea.org/programs/clean-regattas

eneteau’s newest line of power cruisers, Monte Carlo, just introduced the MC 6, the flagship and grande dame of the series. The model joined her smaller predecessors, the MC 4 and 5, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain where she sent heartbeats flying while maneuvering to the dock. The Monte Carlo line was created by Beneteau a few years ago to bridge the gap between Beneteau’s Gran Tourismo and the Monte Carlo Yachts series that reaches up into superyacht territory. The design’s retro styling with round portlights and a straight sheer evokes old school design sensibilities but at the same time, she is a brand new model with every modern amenity and advanced technology available.

Design Inside & Out The MC 6 has a very distinctive bow with a deep V and hard chines that flatten farther back. The bow flares dramatically as if to catch up with the on-deck beam above. This hull shape accomplishes a few things: it keeps the bow driving forward by splitting waves instead of pounding down onto them, it minimizes spray on deck, and it keeps the aft end of the boat from rolling.

BOAT REVIEWS | TESTEO DE EMBARCACIONES The interior finish is brushed oak, which is heavily textured and alternates nicely with smooth leather accents. Multiple fabrics in contrasting light and dark colors add depth and dimension. With the Nuvolari & Lenard Italian styling, the MC 6’s interior hints at what the Monte Carlo Yachts line juts above its promises. Surfaces padded with fabric and leather deaden sound while numerous round portholes add light. The Great Outdoors The first MC 6 arrived as a flybridge version with a sport-top sure to be introduced next year. Ascend the teak-covered steps and you’ll come up to a U-shaped settee that wraps around a teak dining table. Across, is a galley module with a grill, sink and ice maker. Forward, is companion seating for two and the helm chair just aft of a well-laid out dash while the entire aft end forms a giant, and quite private, sunpad. Another outdoor galley is in the more protected area of the aft cockpit, a feature so popular in the U.S. that it will be part of the standard price. The top of the transom has a grill and a food prep area so the chef stands on the hydraulic swim platform and cooks while conversing with guests lounging on the sofa in the aft cockpit. If you’d rather escape the socializing altogether and dive into your favorite novel, move up to the foredeck where twin chaise lounges electrically emerge from the teak-covered deck. It may sound gimmicky but once you see it, you’ll be sold that there’s no better way to enjoy a peaceful anchorage with a cocktail, and cup holders are built in – of course. Inspired Interior Like many of the latest designs, the MC 6’s interior starts on the exterior as the cockpit is on the same level and separated by only large glass and stainless steel doors that fold outward. A 40-inch LED TV pops up from a cabinet that nestles between the salon and the bridge area, one step up. Here, the helm station can only be described as the nerve center with a single leather helm seat near the midline that has twin flared armrests with a joy stick on the right and a trackball on the left. Just ahead, our test boat had a single 24” Simrad multifunction display that toggled easily between all navigation screens, engine information and even the rearview camera feed. The layout includes three cabins and three heads so six can sleep in private comfort. The full-beam master suite has a generously proportioned bed with a padded headboard and good headroom all around. To port, are multiple drawers for good storage and to starboard is a split head with the shower compartment aft and the toilet and small sink forward. If the master is defined by space, the forward VIP stateroom is defined by light with round opening portlights and a deck hatch overhead. Because the MC 6 carries her beam so far forward and the V-hull flares so significantly, there has been very little space given up in this cabin and on any other boat, this would serve as the master. The third stateroom has twin bunks that can be joined and its own entry into a bathroom that also serves as the day head. Let’s not forget, a captain/nanny/grandchild cabin can be spec’d as an option in the transom with its own access from the swim platform. Performance The MC 6 is a pod-driven boat with the engines far aft allowing more interior space for the master stateroom. The engine noise is moved farther away from the living spaces and docking a boat with pod drives and joystick control is a breeze, even for new skippers. Power is provided by twin Cummins 600 hp diesels with Zeus pod drives. In the bay of Palma, we took the MC 6 out for a spin on a sunny day with 1-2 feet of chop and 10-12 knots of breeze. The boat came up on plane at 17 knots and did so without fuss. The ride

was so smooth, we didn’t notice how fast we were moving until we reached a cruising speed of 20-22 knots. Wide open throttle brought us up to 26.4 knots. With nearly 600 gallons of fuel, the MC 6 has a range of 300 nautical miles at cruising speed with a 20% reserve. Overall The MC 6 is an aspirational boat, meant for those who want the superyacht feel without the overpowering size or the sticker shock. Beneteau’s approach is to offer a reasonable base price and three trim level packages (Advantage, Elegance and Exclusive) to bundle popular features. Additional individual options are available beyond that. With its high bow and retro round ports, the MC 6 may look like it was created in the 1960s but this is not your father’s cruiser – not by a long shot.

n the world of yacht design, there’s little greater achievement than when form and function collide to create something greater than the sum of their parts. So it is with redesign and there’s no better example of that than the restructuring of former racing sailboat Sleighride into the sleek 77-foot Aandeel, a West Coast wonderyacht that turns heads wherever she raises sail. Award winning concept designer, Adam Voorhees, undertook the restruction of a fifteen-year-old racing vessel into a fast cruiser manageable by a couple. “To create a new experience within the confines of existing parameters is challenging,” says Voorhees. “And making the complex less so, is even harder.”

According to Voorhees, the new own er wanted a refit rather than a new build wishing for something unique but already proven. Sleighride, a very large and fast daysailer, had just the right combination of attributes to fit the bill and was purchased by the new owner without even a sea trial. Chief among mandatory features were independence from a professional crew and a fast ride. The vessel was purchased in Rhode Island and shipped to California where she underwent a two-year facelift. Although Sleighride was launched in 1996, her design by Bill Langan of Sparkman & Stephens was ahead of its time. She had the benefit of a generous social space on deck, well separated from the working cockpit, and a large but bare interior, perfect for reinterpretation. S&S design number 2625, Sleighride was built by Goetz Boats and upon her launch, she was deemed to be so extreme in her design that Lloyds initially declined to insure her. On her sea trial, Sleighride reached 23 knots with 25 people aboard. Sleighride was constructed of carbon and carbon pre-impregnated (prepreg) skins over a balsa cored hull and deck with structural bulkheads of pre-preg over a Nomex core. Pre-preg carbon fiber creates a highquality finish with low resin content and therefore less weight. Sleighride initially weighed in at 32,500 pounds, with external ballast in the keel and bulb, and 10,500 pounds of moveable water ballast. Her sail area was 2,465 square feet, which Voorhees had to make manageable for the boat to be sailed short-handed in a variety of conditions. A furling boom was added because the enormous mainsail could not be folded in two. A new track was installed on the mast and the main arch was cut off and rebuilt with a more vertical radius. The large genoa was put on a hydraulic furler to be controlled with electric winches that are distributed around the deck. button controls to shift the moveable ballast. Voorhees even designed new throttle and gear shifters that were then wrapped in carbon to keep with the new aesthetic. The deckhouse was reshaped with different side windows to add depth and achieve a more aggressive, yet sophisticated, look. Perfection came when Awlgrip created a custom mix of just the right shade of Aston Martin tungsten silver for the topsides paint. The pulpit was made to swing open so the anchor could be lifted out of a recessed bow locker with a spare halyard. Next, came the new equipment. The vessel was repowered with a larger engine and a bigger battery bank was added. A bowthruster was mounted to ease close-quarters maneuvering, and a water heater and water maker were added aboard as were air conditioning units and new heads. Sleighride gained 10,000 pounds. Below, the concept of “low visual noise” was taken to a new level. Only essential functionality was retained. Bulkheads were removed to reconfigure the interior with two cabins, a library and two heads. A pre-preg deck beam was bonded in for extra support and floor panels were cut to give access to the water ballast valves below. The galley was enlarged but simplified and nothing that was not in immediate use was allowed to show. The minimal furniture is mid-century modern and leather open-top totes serve as storage boxes. Disparate elements heighten awareness, which is why the chunky saloon rug is a welcome bit of texture in a space that is otherwise defined by smoothness. It not only draws the eye but tempts the bare toe to reach out and touch it. It’s the kind of interior you take in at a glance, but enjoy over time. Details make a project happen and it was through the attention to a thousand small details that Sleighride became Aandeel. The new name means “share” in Dutch because the owners wanted to share

When they learned that aandeel really means “stock share” they kept the name anyway, maybe because the refit came in at three and a half times the original purchase price and a few shares of stock were needed for its completion. Aandeel manages to mask much complexity under just enough simplicity that no one who steps aboard will ever be the wiser as to what takes to sail such a yacht. ake a big breath and hold it. The oxygen you inhale is absorbed by your blood and carried throughout your body. When this happens, carbon dioxide is released by your cells and is carried to your lungs to be exhaled. But wait – keep holding your breath. Your lungs will ache as you keep yourself from exhaling. Trigger impulses from your brain will signal your body to ensure normal respiration. This trigger – the urge to breathe – is not caused by a lack of oxygen in your body, but rather a buildup of carbon dioxide and a change in your body’s pH causing it to drop and therefore become acidic.

Pteropods, often nicknamed sea butterflies, are free-swimming sea snails about the size of a small pea. Their name is Greek, meaning “winged-foot”; their thin, transparent shells are made from calcium carbonate. Pteropods are an important source of food, eaten by marine creatures from the tiny krill to salmon and even whales.

Seawater is naturally alkaline with a healthy pH around 8.2. But since the industrial revolution, this number has dropped 30% making it more acidic. In the last two centuries alone, the ocean has absorbed 525 billion tons of carbon dioxide emitted through the burning of fossil fuels. Scientists say the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher now than it has been in the last 650,000 years, and that this recent change is happening faster than

any known change in ocean chemistry in the last 50 million years. To preserve ocean health we must curb our carbon dioxide emissions. There’s a strong connection between the ocean and the atmosphere. A golden rule to remember is that what gets emitted into the air eventually makes its way into the ocean. Right now, that number is about 22 million tons of carbon dioxide per day or one third of all carbon emissions. This conceivably has “delayed” the current impact of global warming, but it does not mean the problem has disappeared. When carbon dioxide reacts with seawater, it forms carbonic acid – the same acid that creates fizz in soft drinks, which is also the root of where many problems in the ocean may stem from in the coming years. The marine environment is teeming with organisms that depend on protective shells to survive. Calcium carbonate is a key element for sea creatures to build their shells. From coral to oysters, lobsters to certain varieties of plankton – shells are the only line of defense for many creatures in the ocean. When excess carbonic acid is present, the formation of calcium carbonate becomes difficult and can dissolve shells that have already been formed. Because so many of these organisms serve as the basis of the marine food web, this breakdown may have sweeping effects in years to come. Some one billion people rely on marine animals currently as their primary protein source. Coral Reefs Corals also need calcium carbonate to survive. Often described as the “rainforests of the ocean”, they contain over 25 percent of the world’s fish biodiversity. However, scientists have found that increasing acidity significantly reduces the ability of reef-building corals to produce skeletons. On top of the many species they house, coral reefs provide many coastal communities with a natural protection from storm surges and hurricanes. Additionally, they make up a large portion of the tourism industry in tropical destinations. In the United States alone, this includes revenue of $1.2 billion per year in the Florida Keys, and $360 million per year in Hawaii. with a small shell. Often called the “potato chips of the sea” due to the critical part they play in the arctic marine food chain. These beautiful, tiny creatures are essential to the diet of everything from krill, to salmon, and even whales. A recent study of pteropods in the Pacific Ocean, between Central California and the Canadian border, found that more than half of the creatures had damaged shells due to acidity. This creates disturbances in the food chain with enormous implications that are still not fully understood. While the impact of ocean acidification is still being explored, scientists are finding that even creatures at the bottom of the ocean are beginning to experience issues due to changes in acidity. The Pacific Northwest has been hit the hardest. Their oyster farms, a 110 million dollar operation, have become the poster child to expose the danger ocean acidification poses to the fishing industry. In addition to potentially wiping out the farms if waters become too acidic, researchers have found that the pH of the ocean may impact the size of the oyster. The oceans function as our planet’s life support system Two of the most important factors for an organism to survive in the ocean are temperature and acidity. As we continue to emit carbon dioxide, we alter both of these conditions. So, the sooner we reduce global carbon emissions, the sooner we are able to prevent these harmful trends. The ocean moderates our climate and filters pollution. It supplies us with a rich diversity of food, minerals, and medicines. We also use it as a source of comfort,

But if it is intent on attacking, about all you can really do is run fast and climb a tree. Paul first learned about Komodo Dragons when he was a boy living in a village on Flores Island. By the time he’d completed his ranger training and had worked for a couple of years as a guide on Rinca, where several rangers were attacked last year, it became clear to him that the dragons were unpredictable and dangerous. Perhaps it was time for a career change! “My parents don’t even know this is my job,” he told us. “They think I work in a restaurant.” I’d been excited about visiting Komodo National Park since we first started planning our trip through Indonesia. What I hadn’t realized was that this UNESCO World Heritage site also offers a stunning mix of savannah,

jungle and sandy beaches which range from white to pink to black. All this and its clear blue water and vibrant coral makes it one of the most dramatic landscapes in all of the archipelago. The park also offers a myriad of fantastic anchorages and Rinca, where we’d gone ashore to see the dragons, was just the first. We came across our first dragon before we even learned Paul’s name. It was resting, under a tree, in the afternoon heat just off the path that ran between the dock (where Paul met us) and the ranger station. It was bigger but less menacing than expected. “That’s a young male,” Paul told us. It was still well under its potential length of three meters and weight of 100 kg. But our 13-year-old daughter, Maia kindly pointed out that “its bite contains toxic bacteria and a protein that stops your blood from clotting.” Despite Paul’s obvious fear of the dragons, he was upbeat about our trek. He sent us into the ranger station to buy our stack of tickets –one for our boat, three for the park, three for conservation, one for the and, one for the camera. Then we headed through the camp where the rangers lived and where the dragons like to hang out, just in case food magically falls from the kitchen above them. While we watched, some food did fall and the dragons woke up. Sounding like a Darth Vader fan club, they huffed and argued over the scrappy little snacks and then began flicking their forked yellow tongues out at us. “Maybe you’d like to hike now,” Paul suggested as he herded us away from the approaching dragons. Assuming the dragon drama was a bit of ranger

theatrics, I barely glanced back as we headed off along the trail. A few minutes later, we spotted a distressed water buffalo laying in a puddle. As we got close up, Paul pointed out where a dragon had wounded it and explained it would die soon. Maia, who had been reading about Komodos for home schooling, explained that the dragons have an efficient way of killing large prey. Rather than fighting to death, they let bacteria from the wound do the work for them. Peering back toward the camp, checking for menacing shapes, I started to understand why Paul was so spooked by the dragons. Puff, they aren’t. After passing a second healthier buffalo, we came across a female Komodo guarding her nest—the babies would hatch and then head up into the trees where they’d hide for a few years. Then we started the upward climb to take in the view. At the top of the next crest, I stopped to bandage a blister. Paul lost his relaxed look and peered at my foot anxiously, “Is there blood?” he asked. “These creatures could smell blood up to five kilometers away” he quietly explained to my husband Evan. Assured that my foot wouldn’t bring out the dragons, Paul went back to showing us around and was thrilled when we caught sight of one of the last remaining wild horses on the island. Looping back down the hill, we encountered a pair of buffalo-less hooves on the trail. Dragons will eat every part of an animal; bones, hair and all, but apparently

With another blister forming, I couldn’t help but hope that their foot aversion applied to humans as well, or at least that those hooves were a sign that the local dragons were currently all well-fed. An adult one only eats about once a month but it was clear, as I hobbled along, that if it was looking to pick one of us, it would pick me. After surviving our dragon encounter, we were happy that our next anchorage, on the southern end of Komodo, had fuzzier and friendlier looking wildlife. Timor deer were eating the seaweed that was exposed at low tide along a cliff base, while a wild boar foraged on the beach. Even the water offered an impressive array of creatures—with every dive or snorkel bringing us close to a wide range of gorgeous corals as well as clown fish, napoleon wrasse and even turtles. On our way back to Labaun Bajo to reprovision, we stopped in Lehokgingo on Rinca with the hope of seeing one last dragon. There we were rewarded when

After watching it for a while, and realizing it had no interest in us, I made my way up the beach, following its small tracks to get a photo with the dragon in the foreground and our boat in the background. After snapping a few pictures, I looked around and noticed much bigger dragon tracks just behind me, leading away from the beach. “Oh, no!” I muttered as I nervously scanned the brush then scurried back to our dinghy.

Not your typical Caribbean resort grub. Nothing can top the highbrow cookery and tremendous wine cave of Passion, but Bana, the resort’s modern Japanese and Pan Asian fusion joint, absolutely won’t disappoint your spoiled taste buds. Their interpretation of Sushi is the way to go and, while you’re at it, throw back a few of their zingy sake cocktails. If your craving for raw seafood remains fervent, head to Fuego for ceviche picante paired with mezcal or tequila cocktails. The resort’s Mediterranean mainstay, Vento, and the delicious Mole, which serves Mexican fare, are also excellent midday restaurants. Naturally, Royal Service guests can stay put and munch at Hydro Grill, an à la carte restaurant with a swim up bar. Our recommendation though is that you give the 10 or so other culinary options a whirl. Getting Out! There’s no lack of fabulous day trips in and around Playa del Carmen. Head to Cobá or Tulum and take in the mesmerizing ancient limestone ruins or swim with dolphins at the stunning Xel-Ha Nature Park. Some of the best snorkeling in the world is off of Cozumel, but perhaps a visit to the ecologically friendly, Hidden World Cenotes is also worthwhile. There, you can snorkel in the underwater caves inside the Mayan Jungle. More Mayan coastal jungle discovery can be found by hiking, kayaking, snorkeling or horseback riding around Punta Venado Caribbean Eco Park. An easy jaunt that takes half the time can be had if you saunter into the town of Playa del Carmen to peruse the shops along Quinta Avenida. Return at night for dancing with the locals at Blue Parrot, on the beach side of town, a hotspot that will keep you busy until the wee hours. Although, Party Playa, with its VIP bottle service and glossier atmosphere, might suit you even better.

El pilar mediterráneo del resort, Vento, y el delicioso Mole, que sirve comida mexicana, también son excelentes opciones para el mediodía. Naturalmente, los huéspedes del Servicio Real pueden quedarse y deleitarse en Hydro Grill, un restaurante a la carta con un bar en la piscina. recent viewing of George Cukor’s 1940 movie production of Philip Barry’s classic play, The Philadelphia Story, left the inner sailor in me eager for summer. “My, she was yar,” marvels Katherine Hepburn’s character, Tracy Lord, while gingerly holding the model of a yacht she was once given by her ex-husband (C. K. Dexter as portrayed by the dashing Cary Grant). She and her ex had sailed that very yacht down the coast of Maine. “Easy to handle, quick to the helm, fast, right… Everything a boat should be, until she develops dry rot,” she sighs from her pool to George Kittredge, her new fiancé (played by John Howard). espués de ver la película “A Philadelphia Story”, una producción de George Cukor de 1940 basada en la obra de Philip Barry, me quedé con ganas de que llegue el verano. Peer-to-Peer Boat Rental and Charter Marketplace

H

ow many times have you walked the dock of a marina only to see boats that never seem to leave? Is that your boat? What if there was a way to have your boat pay for itself? A safe one that lets someone else manage all the details and covers all the bases. Cruzin.com is that service. Cruzin delivers a way for people to charter vessels directly from other boaters. Those familiar with Airbnb, will recognize the site -- the search page is almost an exact copy. Owners create free boat listings with descriptions and photos, prices and availability. Renters search listings based on location, dates and boat type. Online reviews further help the selection process at both ends. Membership is free to both owners and renters, and they are protected throughout the charter by more than $2-3 million in hull and $1 million liability insurance plus BoatUS towing services. Renters are pre-qualified via an Experian ID and fraud-prevention check as well as a review of any driving and insurance issues. All renters are required to have a minimum of two years of boating experience. Business is apparently booming. According to a recent press release, Cruzin has experienced exponential growth with listings jumping 785 percent in the first quarter of 2015. With Jaclyn Baumgarten at the helm (as CEO and Founder), Cruzin has an all-female leadership team behind it and that’s not easy to find in the Marine Industry. Baumgarten has grown the web-based business from concept to successful, funding a company in the highly-competitive peer-to-peer (P2P) boat-sharing market in three years. In 2014, she was recognized by Boating Industry in its Movers and Shakers issue for expanding the sport. Boaters all over the U.S. are jumping on board CRUZIN.com, including the eastern seaboard, both northern and southern California, the Caribbean and of course, Florida. Members can choose from over 1,700 listings worldwide, for both captained and bareboat vessels, a third of them sail. With so many boats sitting idle here in the San Francisco Bay, there’s certainly a need for a service like this. I spoke with CRUZIN.com member Sharon Zohar, who like so many other Bay Area boaters, uses his 32-foot Maxum an average of 10 days per year. “I just finished a weekend rental and the renters loved it, said Mr. Zohar. It’s a full service company. You don’t have to worry about insurance.” Sharon mentions that he liked that he could check out the renters and talk with them on the phone before leaving his boat in their hands. In order to offer his boat through the CRUZIN.com website, Sharon had to have a survey done. “They sent a professional surveyor who was very detailed and came up with a 20-page report about my boat,” Zohar told me. I only had a couple of issues to fix in order to bring my boat up to spec: add a CO2 alarm and replace a fire extinguisher.” Cruzin let’s owners decide how much to rent their boats for and then

@ they take 40 percent of the total rental amount. The owner keeps 100 percent of the cleaning fee and the renter is responsible for fuel. I asked Zohar how he decided what to rent his boat for. “I looked at other boat charters to figure out what to charge and came up with $599 /day plus fuel,” he said. “So far, I’m booked pretty solid for the summer and I’ve already rented it out five times over my first five months with the program.” The only drawback thus far? Sharon has found that people have brought his boat back with an empty tank. That’s an issue because his marina doesn’t have a fuel dock nearby. He’s working on how to deal with future renters to avoid getting stuck. Cruzin is reaching out and collaborating with others in the boating industry like Jim Frye, Vice President of Business Development for Westrec Marinas. Last spring, Frye, who enjoys introducing as many folks to recreational boating as possible, became Industry Liaison for Cruzin. He sees it as a new expression of the way the industry does business. Like Baumgarten, Frye sees the value in getting access to a boat you might be familiar with or one that you might like to try out. And there’s great news for sailors, 2015 will be the second year for Summer Sailstice and Cruzin to join forces. According to Baumgarten, “Both Cruzin and Summer Sailstice help grow sailing by providing easy access to vessels and events.
