Newport Unveils Brand New Sailing Museum Images by Cate Brown
T
he Sailing Museum officially opened its doors to the public on May 10, 2022. Located on the waterfront of downtown Newport in the historic Armory Building built in 1894, the museum offers an innovative multimedia experience. An educational and cultural non-profit organization, The Sailing Museum features the National Sailing Hall of Fame and America’s Cup Hall of Fame. In the space once used as the Press Room for the America’s Cup, the heritage of sailing is now being celebrated, the legends of the sport honored, and new sailors and innovators inspired. In addition to the Halls of

Fame, The Sailing Museum features a mix of high- and lowtech interactive exhibits that share the principles of sailing, provides seasoned sailors with opportunities to test their skills and knowledge and connects new sailors with resources to get started on their sailing journey. A collaborative design effort led by award-winning Healy Kohler Design, The Sailing Museum offers sailing enthusiasts the chance to revel in their sport and new sailors to be enticed to take to the water for the first time. The personalized museum journey begins with the selection of a boat. For sailors, they can select from one
of seven; while those experiencing sailing for the first time will be given the option of a short quiz that will help them select a boat. For all, this boat will become their avatar throughout their museum experience, guiding them through the interactive elements, and offering the chance to build skills and earn virtual rewards. The first floor of the museum is divided into six thematic areas: Wind & Water; The Making of a Sailor: Mental; The Making of a Sailor: Physical; Teamwork; Competition; and Legends of Sailing – National Sailing Hall of Fame & America’s Cup Hall of Fame. The second floor is home to additional exhibits and a private lounge honoring Hall of Famers. Embedded with ‘stealth learning’, exhibits provide real-world applications of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) concepts that come alive through sailing. These five disciplines are used in everyday activities, promoting problem solving, and creative and analytical thinking in a more openended way and make them applicable to real life. Formal and informal educational programming will be layered into the
experience throughout the year. “The museum is Newport and Rhode Island’s newest cultural institution and tourist attraction and is directly tied to the heritage and identity of the Ocean State,” said Heather Ruhsam, Executive Director, The Sailing Museum. “Opening the museum fulfills a longstanding vision of the organization’s founders. A dream 17 years in the making, made possible by the work and support of so many individuals who came together to make this truly stunning location a reality. The Sailing Museum is not only intended to preserve the history of the sport, but to educate and inspire future sailors and innovators.” “Our new home will be a feast for the senses, harnessing technology to bring the excitement of sailing to life and honoring our sport’s heroes in exciting and innovative ways,” said Gus Carlson, President of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. “Our goal is to create a special place that engages everyone, from our sport’s faithful to casual sailors to newcomers who are curious about what happens when wind and water meet.

We are confident The Sailing Museum will be a unique venue to showcase our sport and the accomplishments of its heroes.” “In The Sailing Museum, sailing has a home that trumpets its achievements and inspires generations to excel on the water, and to serve the sport,” said Gary Jobson, Hall of Famer and Board Member. “The memorable moments in our sport are countless, and unless there is a common place to preserve these memories, we’re in danger of losing the relevance of sailing’s past and future.” “Sailing is an activity without limits,” said Betsy Alison, Hall of Famer and United States Paralympic Sailing Team Coach. “The Sailing Museum stresses the inclusivity of the sport and is a venue that celebrates the passion that drives people to take to the water. I am confident that the exhibits here will educate and entertain visitors of all abilities or interests.” “I am lucky indeed to be a member of both the National Sailing Hall of Fame and the America’s Cup Hall of Fame,” said Tom Whidden, Executive Chairman, North Technology Group. “What an honor it will be to sit alongside so many accomplished people, who have achieved so much in our sport, presented in this | 12 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com
incredible new facility in Newport. For anyone, of any age, who loves to sail, The Sailing Museum will be a must visit.” A ribbon cutting ceremony took place Friday, May 6 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, to which the public was invited to attend. Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Matos was in attendance and the Governor provided remarks alongside other dignitaries. Beginning May 10 through the summer season, The Sailing Museum will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets will be offered at $18, with discounts for seniors, students and military, and children 10 and under will enjoy the museum free of charge. In keeping with their goal to increase access to the sport and create an inclusive environment to learn, The Sailing Museum is a member of the Museums for All program, which provides reduced admission to low-income visitors at over 800 museums in the country. Tickets for visitors participating in the SNAP program will be $2. L
ast autumn, I had the opportunity to pop into the 2021 Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup in tony Newport, Rhode Island. The legendary Swiss watch manufacturer is known for throwing some of the chicest regatta events around the world: The 2021 Invitational did not disappoint as it was brimming with the jet set and world-class sailors. Nineteen yacht crews from nine countries competed intensely in and around Narragansett Bay, until Saturday, September 18, when America’s Southern Yacht Club overtook the British, team, Royal Thames Yacht Club for an impressive win. In addition, the title sponsor, Helly Hansen and the new Hammetts Hotel served as sponsors of the four-day affair, which saw us take in all the excitement courtesy of Main Street Hospitality. The upscale yet folksy and smart Stockbridge, Massachusetts-based, boutique hotel owner/operator group, has been led by Founder and CEO, Sarah Eustis, for over a decade. I can’t get enough of the brand’s signature Berkshire magic and the coziness that guests can find at such gems as The Red Lion Inn and The Porches Inn at MASS MoCA. Still, this was my first press trip in person since the pandemic and I was both hesitant and curious. When it finally opened in June of 2020, during the pandemic, the 84-room hotel was just about an instant hit for Main Street Hospitality. “It’s a hot spot!” wrote the publicist for the property, who could barely fit me in during one of their busiest weekends.

Newport can be fussy or even exhausting, but somehow, the Hammetts Hotel navigates the very best of Newport with easy access to everything in center of town. We prioritized Aquidneck Island; opting to avoid Rhode Island traffic with closer excursions to First Beach; to explore Fort Adams and Cliff Walk; culminating in a cruise on Ocean Drive to marvel at the palatial homes, before heading back to dinner. Take your time to indulge in Giusto by chef/owner Kevin O’Donnell. Its fun and delicious “Freestyle Italian” cuisine is the standout of the hotel. There’s squid ink ragù and ravioli with fresh corn purée, black mission figs, prosciutto and chanterelle mushrooms; a surprisingly yummy Coppa di Testa with homemade picked vegetables, and fantastic Italian wines. Giusto has resonated with guests and locals alike who enjoy its semi-open kitchen and an outdoor bar. DiLeonardo, the local world-renowned design firm at the helm of the project, incorporated gorgeous wood, accents of iron, brick, wainscoting, nickel, and splashes of navy, giving life to upscale, yet uncomplicated interiors that evoke nautical influences. You can opt for a west end-side, Marina King room, which are cozy but sufficient and, fortuitously, these rooms face the Newport Yachting Center marina. The main event of our stay was always Newport Harbor so we could sip, observe, relax in the sun, and enjoy the scene. We felt little need to leave the hotel. The design and architecture firms involved took the COVID-19 reality and made it an asset by crafting exceptionally tasteful seating and public spaces that underscore social distancing and are inviting. A historical site, the wharf space has gone dozens of iterations: from industrial to commercial and performance venue to parking lot. Multiple community members’ perspectives came to light and the hospitality project ruffled some feathers. To that end, Hammetts Hotel has made an honest effort to democratize The Wharf at Hammetts as it is now called. Notable public spaces in a hotel include a lobby lounge with floorto-ceiling windows (a guest lounge also exists), two meeting rooms, a fitness center and a 9,000-square-foot deck. “The hotel is built as a hub of experiences,” Randi Milewski, the General Manager of Hammett’s Hotel, said, who suggested that we also check out the art at the property’s Sarah Langley gallery. “Since Hammetts opening in 2020, we’ve been extremely proud of not only the property’s success,” added the CEO, “But how it has been a powerful creator of meaningful connections for visitors and the community in a genuine way.” How very right she is.

Over 640 Dolphins Rescued by IFAW Staff and Volunteers Text & Photos by NANCY BLOOM

ape Cod Bay has been noted as one of the busiest stranding areas for dolphins. Wellfleet, MA is especially known as a hotspot during low tide. Dolphins get close to the shorelines looking for fish and zooplankton and often get stuck in thick mud when the tides go out. Many scientists feel that these dolphin strandings are caused by its ocean floor and the distinctive

geographic shape of Cape Cod, which extends about 65 miles eastwards into the Atlantic Ocean with the exterior portion turning towards the north and then toward the west like a hook. When standings are reported, IFAW (the International Fund for Animals Welfare) responds quickly. Teams of volunteers travel from different parts of the Cape to assess the animals, treat and

extract them. The dolphins are usually brought to Provincetown in a mobile dolphin clinic so they can be released to an area with deeper water. Most of the releases have taken place at Herring Cove because of its easy access and deep water. About eighty percent of the stranded dolphins are released back to the ocean. Small tracking satellite tags placed on these mammals provide IFAW with the ability to track them for two months. Once the dolphins are assessed and treated, IFAW’s Marine Mammal Rescue & Research team carts the dolphins to the edge of the water for their release. Because dolphins are social animals and tend to travel in pods they are usually released in groups. The International Fund for Animals Welfare is a non-profit organization. Interior design The interiors were designed to produce maximum stylistic harmony, in which every single detail – from the ambiance as a whole down to the smallest furnishing accessories – is contrived by the same hand to arrive at an absolute project in the truest sense of the term. Achille Salvagni, designer of the interiors, brings to the new 68 some of the defining features of his most important projects, such as smooth, curving lines, generous spaces embodying a concept of informal and unostentatious conviviality and, lastly, an extraordinary cleanness of line. One of several important points that clearly distinguish the spaces on this boat from those on other similarly sized yachts, is

the solution adopted to give the galley a feeling of privacy while allowing light to flow freely, significantly increasing the perception of space. This important and innovative design solution makes it possible to close off an area without making it feel at all cramped: vertical ribbing and plexiglass are used to separate two spaces physically yet almost intangibly, because of their low visual impact. Another fundamental concept in the interior design of the yacht is undoubtedly the transformability and multifunctionality of the spaces. This is particularly clear in the day area on the Main Deck, laid out on two levels. Thanks to two coffee tables that can be lowered and the possibility of installing a second TV in the wall, this zone can be turned into two different and independent areas. An important feature of the interiors is the spaciousness of the night area, configured to offer four cabins and three bathrooms of decidedly generous dimensions (high ceilings, roomy wardrobes and long beds). The stand-out feature in the 68’s interiors, lastly, is the refined owner’s suite, characterized by a natural and unaffected sense of luxury and an atmosphere of wellbeing that is close to the modern concept of wellness.

BOAT REVIEWS | TESTEO DE EMBARCACIONES Exterior design The lines of this new Azimut 68 are clean, harmonious and subtle. Designed by Alberto Mancini, who has always found inspiration in car design and built on this to develop a stylistic language that is breathing new life into yacht design, with decidedly advanced shape modelling and the replacement of certain steel details with fiberglass, giving them the strength of design features. Here too, Azimut Yachts is pursuing a profound stylistic renewal, one characterized by extreme cleanness of design and line, where the dark side panels seem to merge with the windows, almost dematerializing them and giving the whole an admirable lightness. Like the interiors, the external areas are defined by transformability and multifunctionality, especially noticeable in the spacious bow zone, where part of the sun pad (over 2 meters long) can be flipped to create a huge lounge furnished with a facing pair of extra-deep and incredibly comfy sofas, ideal for moments of absolute relaxation and conviviality. The Fly offers generous spaces and three separate zones: a spacious sun pad, a dining area, and a stern area that can also be used for sunbathing or furnished with large sofas as a conversation area. A special Azimut Yachts edition of the Pirelli J33 tender is stowed on the swim platform. Carbon Tech Generation This project too is a new step forward in Azimut Yachts’ drive to

Extensive use of carbon fiber in the new 68’s topside (superstructure, hard top and part of the deck) lowers the center of gravity, for impeccable cruising considering the generous spaces offered by the yacht. The hull designed in partnership with Pierluigi Ausonio’s firm P.L.A.N.A. is optimized to achieve maximum efficiency and autonomy, and above all ever lower consumption levels in line with Azimut Yachts’ design philosophy, which is to offer the market low impact products that respect the marine ecosystem. The high efficiency hull is paired with the ideal propulsion system, comprising two Volvo IPS 1350 engines delivering a top speed of 32 knots. The new Azimut 68 is therefore light, silent and easy to maneuver. It also features various solutions identified by Azimut Yachts’ Innovation Lab as part of its ECS – Enhanced Cruising Solutions program, such as the Joystick Driving System, the Garmin Control Monitoring System, and active trim control. As well as being provided with CE (category A) certification, the new Azimut 68 meets HTS High Technical Standard requirements, testifying to the high technical standards applied to the design.

T
his is exactly how I felt after spending some days in Patagonia on my last trip. With beautiful steppes and intriguing deserts, imposing glacial fjords, fascinating mountains, and turquoise lakes, it is easy to fall in love with Patagonia. Patagonia offers many places to discover but, in my opinion, El Calafate and Chaltén are two destinations that you must visit if this is your first trip to this region.
A
EL CALAFATE This cool town, that abounds with great restaurants and pubs, lies in the heart of Patagonia and is home to South America’s most famous glacier, Perito Moreno Glacier. The town was named after the Calafate shrub that has yellow flowers and navy blue berries. The berries are used in local cuisine (mostly jams), and according to a legend, whoever eats them will return to Patagonia.
Where to Stay When visiting El Calafate, I recommend spending a couple of nights at Eolo Lodge. The luxury lodge lies sheltered in a 10,000acre estate rewarded with unforgettable views from every turn. It is located halfway between the city of El Calafate and Los
Glaciares National Park. Leaving El Calafate and driving into the wilderness to Eolo is an experience in itself. Eolo is a Relais & Chateaux hotel, and the fresh and beautifully presented food that mixes international cuisine with the Patagonian touch is among some of the top experiences in the world. When at Eolo, I highly recommend taking the wine tasting course that is included with Eolo’s knowledgeable sommelier. Delight yourself with exquisite Argentine Malbec wines! TOP THINGS TO DO Located in the fascinating Los Glaciares National Park, the Perito Moreno Glacier is a must-see attraction in El Calafate. Stand in front of the grandness of the Perito Moreno Glacier, and listen to the creaking of the ice as it moves and the crashing sound when parts of it fall into the lake. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For the most adventurous travelers, one of the best ways to experience the Perito Moreno is with a Glacier Trek, a memorable walk in the middle of the Perito Moreno accompanied by local guides. But there is more than the Perito Moreno Glacier at Los Glaciares National. Seeing the Spegazzini and Upsala Glaciers is another must-do in El Calafate. These glaciers can only be reached by

boat, an interesting day cruise along Lago Argentino. Visiting an authentic Patagonia Estancia is another cool program to add to this journey. Nibepo Aike is a working Patagonia Estancia where you can go horseback riding, do some trekking, enjoy sheep shearing demonstrations and other farm activities, and taste the most delicious Patagonian lamb. EL Chálten El Chaltén is a hotspot for trekkers and adventure seekers. Surrounded by gorgeous mountains, it practically sits in the shadow of Mount Fitz Roy and a truly spectacular section of the Andes mountain range. It’s known as the Trekking Capital of Argentina, but even beginners can hike here and have an amazing experience! From the get-go, the journey from El Calafate to El Chálten is quite an adventure. The town is a 3-hour drive from El Calafate along the legendary Route 40. WHERE TO STAY When in El Chálten, be sure to stay at Aguas Arriba Lodge.

This remote lodge is an absolutely beautiful intimate treasure which the owners, Pato and Ivor, share with their guests making you feel totally at home. The location of the lodge is sublime, on the shores of Lago del Desierto. It is only accessible by a small boat, after a long drive on gravel roads from El Chálten. The lodge has breathtaking views of the lake, multiple glaciers, and the Fitz Roy. If you like small, intimate unique lodges, this is for you! WHAT TO DO Hiking is without a doubt the main attraction and one of the best things to do in El Chálten. Even if you’re not a self-proclaimed trekker, there are many trails for beginners. Some of these hikes are quite easy and can be attempted even by families with small children. Others are longer and more difficult and are great for more seasoned hikers. There are quite a few things to do in El Chaltén, most of them related to outdoor activities. You can choose from hiking, rafting, and horseback riding to glacier visiting and lake cruising. QUÉ HACER El senderismo es sin duda el principal atractivo y una de las mejores cosas que hacer en El Chaltén. t’s been a while since we’ve felt like opening private spaces to those beyond our family. Yet the time has come to welcome your coterie to the table; to dine and dance the night away. In June, at Salone del Mobile, fashion brands, design maisons, and style experts converge on Milano to unveil the latest and greatest creations. Leading the way over Milan Design Week was Dolce&Gabbana, which celebrated its new Dolce&Gabbana Casa boutique on Corso Venezia 7. We found inspiration from the Italian art-de-vivre, lacquered wood furniture, sleek sofas and duchesse fabrics, accessorized bar accoutrement, mouth-blown Murano glasses, and Sicilian ceramic plates. Our long-neglected social appetite now whet, we yearn to shimmy and shake, or at least indulge a handful of our nearest and dearest to savor and sip around a fanciful feast. | 50 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com
