The Pacific Crossing Guide

4TH Edition by Francis Hawkings

Adlard Coles | $80.00 | Hardback | 9781399407014 | 304 pages | November 5, 2024

The Pacific Crossing Guide is a complete reference for anyone contemplating sailing the Pacific. From ideal timing, suitable boats, routes, methods of communication, health and provisioning to seasonal weather, departure and arrival ports, facilities, likely costs and dangers, this comprehensive new edition will both inspire dreamers and instill confidence in those about to depart. Completely updated, expanded and refreshed for the new generation of Pacific cruisers, this is the definitive reference relied upon by many thousands of cruisers.

The first part provides thorough preparation for both East-to-West and West-to-East crossings, and the second part covers Pacific weather patterns, major routes and landfall ports, with useful website links throughout. There are sections on rallies, coral atolls and atoll navigation, the cyclone season and laying up, use of electronic charts, satellite phones versus HF radio, ongoing maintenance, and Pacific festivals.

Updated with new charts and photographs, the new 4th edition focuses on ports of entry rather than secondary anchorages, and expands the North Pacific coverage, making it a valuable resource for sailors doing a North Pacific circuit, particularly US and Canadian sailors from the Pacific North.

Under Wide and Starry Skies

50 Sailing Destinations in Seas Less Travelled by Nicholas Coghlan

Adlard Coles | $31.50 | Paperback | 9781399413756 | 336 pages | May 6, 2025

If you own a sailing boat, chances are that you’ve wondered what it would be like to throw in your job, cast off and sail over the horizon.

Here are 50 out-of-the way destinations to encourage you to sell up and go (or enjoy a temporary escape) with practical tips including formalities, the prevailing weather and GPS positions. The selection of locations is based on over 70,000 miles of sailing. Some (St Helena, Cocos Keeling) are classic yet remote destinations that have been favored by circumnavigators ever since the days of Joshua Slocum. Others (in Japan, Patagonia or the Pacific Northwest) have been chosen as perfect examples of the attractions of those regions. Common denominators are protection from the weather, scenic beauty and historic and/or human interest. And the fact that, while solitude is not guaranteed, you won’t be troubled by the arrival of a cruising flotilla or by a novice dragging anchor onto you. Each anchorage is introduced with a lively account describing the place, its history and people (if any) as well as the author and his crew’s adventures. Each account is followed by a beautifully hand-drawn sketch of the anchorage and an information box.

Related Group, Tate Capital and Rok Acquisitions unveil vision for a Monaco-inspired yachter’s paradise, set to transform the iconic marina and deliver a luxury lifestyle under the esteemed St. Regis brand.

A decade in the making, the first phase of the $2 billion development will elevate the premier megayacht marina — home to the world’s largest in-water boat show — into a worldclass lifestyle destination, complete with branded residential towers, a flagship St. Regis hotel, a private beach club, and a selection of signature fine dining and upscale retail. Sales for The St. Regis Residences, Bahia Mar, Fort Lauderdale (The Residences) are now underway.

“While Bahia Mar has attracted global yachting enthusiasts for decades with its prime location and unparalleled superyacht infrastructure, its full potential had yet to be tapped,” said Jorge M. Blending world-class residential, hospitality and lifestyle offerings, this visionary development is not only befitting of this one-ofa-kind site but also a critical addition to Fort Lauderdale s broader evolution. With the introduction of The St. Regis Resort and Residences, Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale, our team is cementing the city as one of the world’s luxury epicenters.”

Spanning over 40 acres of land and water, this extraordinary development will unfold in two phases, transforming the site into a tropical sanctuary. At its heart are two 23-story residential towers and a 197-key luxury hotel, all under the iconic St. Regis brand. Masterfully crafted by an elite design team, the visionary architecture is led by the renowned Arquitectonica, complemented by refined interiors from Londonbased Tara Bernerd & Partners, helmed by esteemed designer Tara Bernerd. An exclusive marina features slips for megayachts up to 350 feet.

The first phase will feature 160 elegantly appointed condominium homes spread across the two residential towers, alongside exclusive resort residences atop the hotel. The condominiums will include three- and four-bedroom options ranging from 2,600 to 3,550 square feet, in addition to stunning penthouse residences. The Genoa International Boat Show

The64th edition of the Genoa International Boat Show took place in Genoa, Italy, from 19-24 September, 2024. It received over 120,000 visitors, and was truly a joy to visit. Having long since surpassed the threshold of two thousand brands and boats on display and with the potential to still improve its overall capacity, the Show’s layout allowed for a unique and engaging visiting experience across a seamless exhibition route.

The guiding element throughout whichever direction visitors chose to follow according to their varying interests was that of innovation, an innovation defined by the challenge of implementing materials and propulsion systems ever more capable of guaranteeing the protection of the environment, and not just that of the sea. From boats to engines to the extensive range of equipment and components, the vast array on offer was inspired by that same dedication.

Genoa has a strong link to the sea and it makes sense for it to host Italy’s most important Boat Show. It has historically been one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean and was the capital of one of the most powerful maritime republics for almost eight centuries. Especially between the 12th and the 15th century, Genoa played a leading role in the history of commerce and trade in Europe, eventually becoming one of the largest naval powers of the continent and considered at the time among the wealthiest cities in the world.

“The leadership of ‘Made in Italy’ yachting in the world has remained consolidated for over twenty years,” explained An-

drea Razeto, President of I Saloni Nautici, during a previous press conference presenting the Show. “In 2023, the global production leadership of Italian superyachts registered +21% compared to the previous year, representing 51% of global orders: one boat out of every two in the world’s seas is Made in Italy. In this framework, the Genoa International Boat Show is the instrument that has always supported and amplified the sector’s drive towards internationalisation, making our values known abroad. With this goal in mind, the programme carried out together with the Italian Trade Agency - for which I would like to thank President Matteo Zoppas - has seen the organisation of collectives featuring Italian companies and the presentation of the 64th edition of the Boat Show worldwide in Düsseldorf, Miami, Dubai, New York for the NY Design Week, Southampton, and Hamburg. As part of the implementation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s Made in Italy Promotion Plan, an international business and press tour brings to the Genoa Boat Show the most important operators in the sector along with key members of the sector’s foreign press, who this year will be coming from over 30 different countries from all five continents”.

Yachting Times Magazine would like to express our deepest thanks to the Italian Trade Agency and the Italian Marine Industry Association who kindly invited us to attend this edition of the Genoa International Boat Show. It was a pleasure to experience first-hand the exceptional quality of their yachts, accessories and services Made in Italy paired with Italian superb designs, world-class quality, elegance and warmth.

The 2024 Gloucester Schooner Festival

A Stunning Visual Spectacle

Text and photos by | Texto y fotos por NANCY BLOOM

The Gloucester Schooner Festival encapsulates more than just a sailing competition; it is a vital celebration of community, heritage, and maritime culture. This year’s regatta festivities were packed with activities catering to a diverse audience. The highlight was the Mayor’s Race, where schooners were divided into classes based on their size and design, including categories

for both traditional and modern vessels. The Parade of Sail presented a stunning visual spectacle as majestic schooners displayed their sails and maneuvered gracefully in the harbor, creating a picturesque backdrop for onlookers. Local vendors and food stands added to the vibrant atmosphere, transforming the waterfront into a lively gathering spot for families and sailing enthusiasts alike.

The festival fosters a strong sense of community involvement, as numerous organizations, local businesses, and volunteers contribute to the event’s success. This collaborative effort not only reinforces local bonds, but also educates the next generation about sailing and maritime traditions. Many of the regatta’s participants are families who have sailed for generations ensuring that the legacy of these magnificent schooners continues to thrive and Gloucester remains a prime sailing destination.

These will be just the inaugural legs of a multi-year global journey that Maverick is impeccably prepared to undertake.

Let’s dive into Maverick’s show-stopping features:

Custom-built A-frame crane: crafted in carbon fiber by Advanced Mechanical Solutions, this A- frame crane with a lifting capacity of 4 tons, is a remarkable piece of engineering and design. It elegantly tucks away after launching tenders, leaving ample space below deck for a beach club featuring a cinema room that can turn into a gym. Flexibility is indeed the key word to this project. Collapsible bulwarks: The bulwarks can be folded down, extending the aft deck into a sprawling 135 square meters of beachy bliss. Deck fittings on the swim platform take the experience to a whole new level.

Ice belt: Maverick features a 12mm thick ice belt at waterline level, ensuring a journey through frosty waters that is both enjoyable and safe.

Custom tender: Maverick comes fully loaded with Iceman, a 9.5 meters custom tender designed by Valerio Rivellini and an array of water-toys, effortlessly launched by the powerful A-frame crane.

The owner collaborated closely with the designers to infuse a distinctive and personal style into the interior. From the family-focused ambiance to the neutral palette and carefully selected materials, Maverick’s interior is a work of art. Huge windows flood the space with light, creating a serene atmosphere that’s both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Let’s not forget the layout.

ARGENTINA

Colome

Una joya escondida en un destino escondido.

Text by | Texto por CLARA BARCIELA www.across-southamerica.com

Duringmy trip to the Cafayate wine region in the Northern Argentinian province of Salta, I visited a variety of wine producers that provide exceptional wines. But the area has one lesser-known gem that offers exceptional high-altitude wines: Colomé Winery & Estancia, the oldest winery in Argentina and one of the highest vineyards in the world. Bodega Colomé was founded in 1831 and is Argentina’s oldest continually working winery. The historic vineyards were planted some 190 years ago and still produce delicious wines.

Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar, the last colonial governor in Salta, founded the winery in 1831. His daughter, Ascención, married to José Dávalos, imported Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines from France in 1854 and was a true pioneer and visionary who laid the very foundations of their wine enterprise. The Isasmendi-Dávalos families managed the winery until 2001 when Swiss businessmen Donald and Úrsula Hess acquired it. Today, the winery is run by Larissa and Christoph Ehrbar (Ursula Hess’s daughter and son-in-law), the second generation of the Swiss family who works to keep their legacy alive: creating extraordinary high-altitude wines through sustainable viticulture practices. Estancia Colomé is located near Molinos in northwest Argentina. We took a 2-hour flight from Buenos Aires to Salta to get to Colomé. We then drove almost five hours to cover the 160 miles (260 kilometers) of gorgeous wilderness from Salta to Colomé, passing through Cachi and Molinos. The road from Salta is long but the breathtaking landscapes made the ride

worthwhile. We passed through The Cardones National Park and saw thousands of cardon cactuses (cardones) growing upwards like outstretched arms.

You can visit Colome any time of the year but I would recommend avoiding the rain season which goes from December to March. During the rest of the year, the weather is warm and dry during the day and the temperature drops at night. I visited Colome during the Southern Hemisphere autumn and had beautiful weather — around 80 degrees F (27 degrees C) in “autumn” and enjoyed the stunning colors of the vineyards.

We arrived a bit late at the estancia, but our hosts were waiting for us. They welcomed us with a glass of wine and some empanadas “Salteñas” in the library before dinner. After a delightful meal paired with some delicious wines from the vineyard, we retired to our room and lit a fire, and occasionally stepped outside to enjoy the stargazing. It was just perfect!

The Estancia has only nine rooms. Our suite was decorated in elegant hacienda-style design and had a private terrace with spectacular views of the vineyards and the Calchaquíes Valleys. Our room had a half bathroom, and a main bath that was quite luxurious, with his and hers sinks and a bathtub.

The Estancia has a good gym, a nice library/reading room and a beautiful swimming pool overlooking the vineyards.

The wifi is a challenge —so it is an ideal place to disconnect from the rest of the world as you only have wifi in the patio and no network service.

Our stay included the winery tour, a wine tasting and a visit to the museum. All activities are highly recommended! The estancia offers different hiking circuits with different difficulties. My husband and I love hiking, so we walked two of the trails. One with gorgeous views of the Calchaquíes Valleys and another one around the oldest vineyards in the winery. After a long morning hiking, we had our lunch at the Estancia restaurant - Provoleta or grilled provolone, cheese soufflé and Colomé Auténtico Malbec wine..after this trip one of my fav wines from Colome!

The entire menu at Estancia Colome is based around homegrown, seasonal products from their own organic garden and farm. Even the ice cream, the milk, and the cheese are all made from animals raised in the estancia. They call it a farmto-table menu. It is a simple but delicious menu made with the local flavors of each season available in the area. Patricia Courtois, winner of the Grand Prix Baron B, is the chef who created a menu specifically for Colomé. Of course, the wine is pretty spectacular too. And all our meals were the perfect blend of wine to pair with our food. The Malbec is wonderful as well as their Torrontés. Try the Special white Misterioso,

you will only find it in Colomé as they have a really short production of this wine.

Colomé was completely renovated and revitalized by Donald Hess, who bought the winery in 2021. Its vineyards, at 6,000 to 10,000 feet above sea level, include vines that are 160 years old. They are proud and also “blessed” to still have vines that grow on their original rootstock. Colomé focuses in Argentina’s two traditional varietals, Malbec and Torrontés, producing wines that have received international accolades. The age of the vines, the biodynamic practices and the altitude combine to create these amazing wines. Lastly, and for me, the main course served in Colome, is the James Turrell Museum. It’s incredible how they have built something like this in this far-away place! Turrell’s works, which are all about light, are captivating - especially the sky space visit which takes place around sunset.

Postcards from the Italian Riviera

Postales de la Riviera Italiana

The Italian (or Ligurian Riviera) is the narrow coastal strip in northwestern Italy that runs over 200 miles from the border with France to the Gulf of La Spezia. It is a region popular with tourists because of its mild sunny weather, colorfully painted buildings, luxury villas and hotels, and charming coastal towns like Portofino, Rapallo, Santa Margherita Ligure, and those in Cinque Terre.

also a renowned yachting and cruising ground with exclusive marinas and yacht clubs, top yachting regattas, and delightful anchorages. The first settlements in this region date from the 8th century BC and the little towns that dot the coast were once fishing villages. Since the late 19th century, the European aristocracy felt attracted to the area, as well as famous artists, writers, and poets, like Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, and Ernest Hemingway, who seemed to have been inspired by the beauty of Liguria. If you stroll along the different seaside promenades busy with charming cafés, boutiques, and restaurants, and enjoy the scenic views of rocks bordering picturesque coves with lush vegetation and centuries old villas overlooking the sea, you will understand why many villages of the Italian Riviera are considered some of the most beautiful in Italy “I Borghi più belli d’Italia”.

Youmight wonder how hypnosis can break old habits, perhaps thinking of smoking cessation or weight loss. While these are well-known applications, hypnosis is incredibly versatile, addressing a wide range of challenges by accessing the subconscious mind—the part of you that governs most of your actions and behaviors.

Often, when willpower alone isn’t enough, it’s because resistance exists within the subconscious. Hypnosis offers a powerful way to uncover and dissolve these blocks, enabling faster and more effective progress toward your goals. By tapping into deeper layers of your mind, you may find that long-standing habits and patterns begin to shift with surprising ease.

What may surprise you even more is how frequently unresolved trauma lies at the heart of these subconscious blocks. Trauma— something we all experience to varying degrees—can manifest as various challenges, from sleep disturbances and relationship conflicts to fears like public speaking, agoraphobia, or procrastination. Hypnosis helps uncover and address these buried experiences, promoting healing and transformation.

So, how does hypnosis work?

It’s closely tied to your brainwave frequencies. Here’s a simplified breakdown of three key states:

Beta waves: These are active when you’re awake and focused, like while reading this. High beta activity can lead to stress, anxiety, and difficulty relaxing.

Alpha waves: These promote deep relaxation and act as a bridge to your subconscious mind. This state is commonly accessed during meditation or hypnosis and is ideal for transformation.

Breaking Old Patterns: Hypnotherapy and Biofield

Tuning to Start the New Year with a Fresh Mindset

Text by | Texto por LIESBET PRYKE, CHt.

Theta waves: These are slower, deeper brainwaves associated with heightened suggestibility, creativity, and intuition—a fertile ground for finding solutions and releasing limiting beliefs.

As a hypnotist, my role is to guide you gently into these slower brainwave states, where your mind is more receptive to change. In this space, you can uncover answers, dissolve resistance, and rewrite unhelpful programming. As you might imagine, one of the common responses immediately after a session when I ask how a client is feeling is: “I feel so relaxed”!

Adding Biofield Tuning to the process can both speed up the process of getting into these states as well as amplify these effects, creating a profoundly transformative healing experience. By working with the energetic field surrounding the body, this modality helps restore balance and harmony, smoothing the release of emotional and mental patterns. Together, these approaches work synergistically both within your mind and energy field to unlock your potential, creating lasting change and personal growth.

MARTIN REYNA

Martin Reyna is an Argentine painter, who lives in France, whose work is developed in a landscape key: a way of understanding the landscape from the pictorial plane in a co-authorship between the artist, the color and the water. Or rather, it is the water that directs the form and the color, that takes over the territory of the paper almost to the point of making the artist disappear, far from the idea of absolute control of the painter in front of a blank sheet of paper. “Water is often the painter of my work; it even draws the perspectives and the lines of drops of color or black Chinese ink. Water transports the color, carries it and obeys it, expands it, and contains it”, says Martín Reyna.

Enormous paintings that are installations on paper, labyrinthine forms that are tied and untied under the dominion of water. Color takes over the wavy and humid space, and opens a path that must be slowly followed and, in this way, becomes part of the interpretation.

Martin Reyna, represented by the Parisian gallery APPART PARIS, was present at the latest edition of the PINTA fair at Art Week Miami 2024 where Yachting Times Magazine had the pleasure of enjoying his work.

Champagne Fleur de Miraval, a Maison co-founded by Brad Pitt, la Famille Perrin, and Rodolphe Péters, which focuses exclusively on the craft of Rosé Champagne, has released its latest cuvée, ER4 (Exclusivement Rosé 4). Produced from a rich and elegant blend of 75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir grapes that have been harvested in Le Mesnil sur Oger, this Côte des Blancs vintage reflects the chalky terroir of Champagne, France, in addition to romantic hints of candied citrus, noisette, spices and dried fruits. “Champagne Fleur de Miraval ER4 upholds our ambitious vision to produce the world’s most exclusive and meticulously crafted Rosé Champagne,” said winemaker Péters. “This highly gastronomic wine is an authentic embodiment of luxury, excellence, and innovation.”

For wines that may have not yet crossed your path, give Donnafugata Sul Vulcano, an Etna Rosso DOC, a try. A unique blend of Nerello Mascalese and to a lesser extent, Nerello Cappuccio, this balanced vintage is produced from vineyards on the North side of the Etna volcano. This terroir results in a fruitfully elegant bouquet reminiscent of pepper, red berries and Aceto Balsamico di Modena; ideal for rich pasta dishes and spicy plates.
