Our Autumn issue features the ultramodern 80 Sunreef Power Eco catamaran and the imposing Sunseeker Ocean 182. As travel destinations we’ve chosen the spectacular Iguazu waterfalls in Argentina and the charming city of Porto and its nearby Douro valley in Portugal. Thanks to The House of Sandeman, I got the chance to visit this enchanting region where I learned about the ancient art of viticulture and sampled a superb selection of wines. We hope you enjoy reading our travel stories in this issue as much as we enjoyed creating them for you.

En esta edición les presentamos al ultramoderno catamarán 80 Sunreef Power Eco y al imponente Sunseeker Ocean 182. Como destinos de viaje hemos elegido las espectaculares cataratas del Iguazú en Argentina así como la encantadora ciudad de Oporto y el valle del Duero en Portugal.

It’sa beautiful June morning and a private chauffeur comes to pick me up from The House of Sandeman Hostel & Suites in the lovely Portuguese city of Porto to drive me to the region bordering the river Douro where viticulture has flourished for thousands of years. The Douro demarcated region is located in the northeast of the Portuguese territory and springs through the valley of the Douro River, limited to the north, west and south by mountain ranges, and bordered by Spain to the east. Port is a naturally sweet, rich and fortified wine, produced exclusively with grapes from this region’s vines. Wine is known here since prehistoric times, but it was during the Roman and Visigoth periods that it began to develop. The last part of the trip includes the mythical N222 road, one of the most scenic roads in Portugal which follows the majestic Douro River as it meanders through the beautiful scenery, offering impressive and beautiful vineyard landscapes. We soon arrive at Quinta do Seixo, one of the largest and most iconic vineyards in the heart of Douro and the true showroom of Sandeman in the region. Benefiting from a prime location on the southern shore of the Douro river, situated between the city of Régua and the village of Pinhão, and referenced since the seventeenth century in the production of Port Wine, the 71 hectares of these vineyards have been marking the landscape of Douro, through the hard work of many generations, and are now the cradle of the best Sandeman wines. Esuna hermosa mañana de junio y un chofer privado viene a recogerme a The House of Sandeman Hostel & Suites en la encantadora ciudad de Oporto para llevarme a la región que bordea el río Duero, donde la viticultura ha florecido durante más de un par de miles de años. La región demarcada del Duero está situada en el noreste del Portugal y nace en el valle del río Duero que limita al norte, oeste y sur por cadenas montañosas, y al este con España. El vino de Oporto es naturalmente dulce, rico y fortificado, elaborado exclusivamente con uvas de esta región. Sus vinos son conocidos aquí desde tiempos prehistóricos, pero fue durante la época romana y visigoda cuando comenzaron a desarrollarse.

La última parte del viaje incluye la mítica carretera N222, una de las más pintorescas de Portugal que sigue el majestuoso río Duero mientras serpentea a través de un hermoso paisaje que ofrece impresionantes y bellas vistas de numerosos viñedos.

The following morning, I visit the Sandeman’s Cellars, located on the waterfront of Vila Nova de Gaia, just steps from the Douro river and just outside the historic center of Porto, in an iconic granite building purchased by the founder of Sandeman in 1811 where visitors are invited to live an experience full of mystery and sensuality that leads them to the discovery of the secrets and flavors of Port Wine and of a brand that has become a global icon.

Over more than two centuries, Sandeman has based its success on a rare capacity for innovation combined with a deep knowledge transmitted from generation to generation. Its founder was George Sandeman, a young and ambitious Scotsman from Perth who launched in 1790 a wine business in London. In 1795, he opened a branch in Cadiz, Spain, and in 1811 he bought a cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. We can still find in the corridors of this cellar more than 2,000 aging casks. Sandeman was soon known as the first company to brand a barrel, in 1805, using a hot iron to give the wine that it sold a name that guaranteed quality and prestige. The name

Sandeman was registered as a trademark in 1877 (First Trademark Registrations Act - First Law on the Registration of Trademarks), making it one of the oldest brands in the world. For more than 225 years has Sandeman been transmitting knowledge from generation to generation to preserve the excellence of its wines. In June 2002, Sandeman joined the corporate holding of Sogrape Vinhos, a leading group in Portugal known for its choice of family businesses with full respect for history and tradition.

Located along the Douro River estuary in northern Portugal, the city of Porto is one of the oldest European centers. It started as a Phoenician trading settlement though the first known inhabitants of the area were the Celtics. Throughout history, it was wellknown as a shipbuilding and a trade port. By the 13th century, the wine produced in the Douro valley was already transported to Porto in “barcos rabelos”, the picturesque flat sailing vessels that now line the city along the riverbank. Porto’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and definitely worth the visit. I highly recommend taking the time to meander along its charming streets that climb several hills and offer delightful vistas of the different buildings and bridges crossing the river below.

Today is my last evening in town. I watch the sunset lights color the buildings on Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite riverbank, while sipping some port wine and tasting some rich local cheeses at one of the bars lining the water with Fado music sounding in the background. A great farewell to a memorable visit to this lovely part of the world.

Thename Iguazú comes from the Guaraní words “y” meaning “water”, and “ûasú” meaning “big”. Legend has it that a deity planned to marry a beautiful woman named Naipí, who fled with her mortal lover Tarobá in a canoe. In rage, the god sliced the river, creating the waterfalls and condemning the lovers to an eternal fall.

The first European to record the existence of the falls was the Spanish Conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541. Iguazú waterfalls became popular worldwide with the 1986 British period drama film The Mission about the experiences of a Jesuit missionary in 18th-century South America. The film, starring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons, Aidan Quinn, and Liam Neeson, offers gorgeous vistas of these mythical falls while telling the story of Jesuit priest Father Gabriel who in the 1750s entered the eastern Paraguayan jungle to convert the Guaraní to Christianity.

Located in the north of Argentina, bordering Brazil, this site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1984. There is a reason - or many reasons! - why the Iguazu Falls in Argentina and Brazil are considered the most spectacular in South America and - possibly in the world.

The Devil’s Throat, the tallest one, drops by more than 80 meters into a milky abyss that creates a permanent cloud of mist. All offer outstanding water flow, especially in the rainy season from November to March when the flow rate may rise to a maximum of 450,000 cubic feet (12,750 cubic meters) per second.

Compared with Niagara Falls on the border of the United States and Canada, Iguazu Falls is nearly twice as tall and almost three times as wide. “Poor Niagara!” is what Eleanor Roosevelt said when she visited the Iguazu Falls for the first time. While Niagara Falls are surrounded by buildings, restaurants and even a casino, Iguazu Falls offer a real jungle immersion along its many trails where you can spot colorful toucans, monkeys, and even jaguars.

El Parque Nacional de las Cataratas del Iguazú está ubicado en un área selecta dentro de una de las pocas selvas tropicales del interior que quedan en América del Sur, una región que alberga más de dos mil especies de plantas, cuatrocientas especies de aves, ochenta especies raras de mamíferos, además de insectos e invertebrados de todo tipo, como el oso hormiguero gigante y el águila arpía. También podrá encontrar aquí otros mamíferos únicos e imponentes de Sudamérica como el Jaguar y el Puma.

El Parque Nacional Cataratas del Iguazú cuenta con un sistema de 275 cascadas que varía en número según la temporada. Tienen aproximadamente 2,7 kilómetros de ancho. La Garganta del Diablo, la más alta de todas, cae desde más de ochenta metros hacia un abismo lechoso que crea una nube permanente de niebla. Ofrecen caudales de agua excepcionales, especialmente en la temporada de lluvias de noviembre a marzo cuando su volumen puede aumentar hasta un máximo de 450.000 pies cúbicos (12.750 metros cúbicos) por segundo!

Falls are significantly wider. If you travel to South America, Iguazu waterfalls are a must-visit destination. Even if you have seen other impressive waterfalls around the world, this one should not be missed. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in Latin America, and the most visited location in Argentina. They are located in the province of Misiones and the best way to get there is by plane.

Is it better to see Iguazu from Brazil or Argentina? They are very different. The Argentinian Falls are the stage and the Brazilian are the theatre. From the Brazilian side, you will have great views of the falls that are on the Argentine side. And from Argentina, you will walk above the falls, which is also exhilarating! So, my advice would be to visit both sides, if possible. I would dedicate one whole day to visit the falls from the Argentinian side and only half a day to visit them from the Brazilian side.

Visiting the Argentine Iguazu Falls for a day.

You will be visiting Iguazú National Park, which includes three circuits: Paseo Inferior (Lower Circuit) – Paseo Superior (Upper) and Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo in Spanish) which is famed for its breathtaking views.

The visit to the three circuits, the lower, upper circuit and devil’s throat, takes almost all day. If you want to take a boat ride, try to be in the park early, and expect to be there all day for sure!

Sandeman’s most recent project brings a truly innovative experience to the Port wine sector: a unique tourist attraction that allows visitors to sleep in a Port wine cellar and enjoy a host of activities related to the brand. The building lies on the waterfront of Vila Nova de Gaia, right across the Douro river in the historic center of Porto. Located within Sandeman’s wine cellars, it opened its doors in early 2018 and is the first branded hostel in the world. The new hostel consists of 10 suites and 5 dormitories, with a total of 73 beds, a restaurant, an esplanade, a bar, a recreation room and an event room. The view of the city of Porto from its suite windows is absolutely breathtaking. One can continue marveling at it while enjoying the delicious breakfast included with the room. The personnel are very welcoming and efficient, and the suites are tastefully decorated. Outside the hotel there’s a cool bar on a deck overlooking the seaside promenade that offers great Sandeman wines and cocktails as well as live music during the weekends.
