Farm life for fun Looking for a fun outdoor activity for the kids these school holidays? The Farmer’s Place at Freshwater Creek is running its popular school holiday program again this April with lots to do for youngsters. The calendar of events include animal feeding, cooking classes and story time and the chance for kids to get their hands dirty making mud pies. This is an off-shoot of their education program, which is open to schools, early-learning centres and community centres and is based around sustainability. Mums, dads and carers can enjoy a coffee and a treat from the cafe while the kids enjoy farm life. Check out the website to book.

t’s not easy to break into the South Geelong market. The suburb, basically bounded by Kilgour Street, the railway line, Latrobe Terrace and the Barwon River, has a combination of wide, boulevard-like thoroughfares and small, lanewaylike streets. But there are only around 500 dwellings, so the chances of snaring your dream home are few and far between. There are some fine, heritage-listed buildings; the South Geelong Primary School (Yarra Street) and Austin Hall and Terrace complex (Yarra Street) are prime examples. Over the past 12 months, only 13 houses in South Geelong have been listed as sold by Domain, with 276 Bellarine Street reportedly fetching

around $1.2 million. The house was sold in 2015 for $360,000 and has been transformed from an original two-bedroom weatherboard into a cutting-edge, two-level, threebedroom modern masterpiece. Another big price was achieved for 188 Swanston Street, a stylish two-
level, three-bedroom brick house that sold in December for $880,000. The median price for properties sold over the past year is just shy of $620,000, indicating a gentrification of the often-forgotten inner suburb. Its attractions are obvious – there is the railway station, proximity to the CBD, Kardinia Park, the Barwon River and its walking tracks, the flourishing Little Creatures Brewing and numerous hipster cafes. A number of properties in recent times have been snapped up by Melbourne buyers, many of whom recognise the value for money that the suburb offers and the ease of commuting to the city for work; there is a much better chance to get a seat on the train at South Geelong than further up the line.

Serenade in moody blues

former classical musician turned interior designer has injected a dose of 21st-century sophistication into this 1980s entertainer with a moody palette of smoke, charcoal and blue. Gillianne Griffiths – a former pipe organist and orchestral conductor – was tasked with undertaking an extensive update of the five-bedroom house by renowned late architect Wayne Gillespie in the exclusive Melbourne enclave of Toorak. Throughout the project, Griffiths took pains to preserve and highlight Gillespie’s trademark architectural flourishes, such as the sky-lit stairwell and the French doors that open on to the French provincialstyle gardens by revered landscape designer Paul Bangay.
Artistry in Toorak House 2 by Studio Griffiths.
At the same time, she reconfigured the layout to incorporate modern must-haves, extending the kitchen to the boundary line so as to accommodate a butler’s pantry, long corridor and expanded laundry and creating an en suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe in the main bedroom. New grey timber veneer joinery was installed throughout the house and the high-sheen marble tiles in the informal living area were replaced with herringbone oak parquetry to help leaven the sombre colours. Finally, the bathrooms and powder rooms were also renovated. The owners, a young couple who run their own property development business, wanted a house where they could entertain prospective clients
on a regular basis. The brief expanded to include the addition of a nursery midway through the project when the pair discovered that they were expecting their first baby. “They’re a young, dynamic entrepreneurial couple,” says Griffiths, whose eponymous interior architecture and design practice, Studio Griffiths, operates out of Melbourne and also in the Mornington Peninsula. “I met them as a couple during the design process, then the wife became pregnant. The baby is now one year old. This is their first house, their dream house. Prior to that they lived in an apartment.” The open-plan kitchen and informal living area features a large artwork by Los Angeles-based artist Athena Bangwu – a friend of the family – and a freestanding workbench in Portsea grey marble. Blue-and-grey Beetle chairs by Denmark’s Gubi add a playful element to the circular dining table by Italian designer Misura. The organically shaped, asymmetrical Hawaii mirror above the fireplace is also from Misura. The rose-shaped porcelain wall sconces in the formal living area are by Portuguese sculptor Iva Viana. Whole food of yesteryear turns full circle
W
hen Harriet Birrell is looking for inspiration for recipes, she only has to think back to the dishes she remembers as a child, mixed in with a dash of creativity and a modern twist. “My ideas for recipes come from a number of places,” Birrell admits. “This includes nostalgic dishes from my childhood recreated into a wholefood, plant-based version and experimenting with veggies that are in season and what is growing in my garden. Also, when I first wake up in the morning sometimes an idea pops into my head that I have no idea where it came from.” The result is WHOLE by Natural Harry, a recipe/lifestyle/coffee table book with more than 100 simple, down-to-earth, plant-based recipes, written by Birrell for everyday use. The book is a collaboration with renowned photographer Nikole Ramsay who, along with stunning food pictures, captured the beauty of the Bellarine Peninsula and the Great Ocean Road on each page. This is the second time the duo, who both call the Bellarine Peninsula home, have worked together. In 2015, they self-published Natural Harry, a collection of summer
recipes from the little caravan food stall Birrell had for three summers in Barwon Heads. “I adored working with Nikole the first time around with Natural Harry, so was keen to collaborate again and create something super special with even more gorgeous imagery from our amazing region,” Birrell says. “All of the recipes (in WHOLE) use ingredients that are plant-based whole foods, meaning meals created from ingredients that grow from the ground and that you can use in their mostly whole form – fruits and veggies, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes etc,” Birrell says. “People are leading very full lives these days and are in need of ways to create yummy food that is still full of goodness and not too difficult or time consuming.” Birrell, who started out in the fashion industry, went on to study integrative nutrition and plant-based

nutrition before opening the smoothie caravan in 2013. The beach lover believes her passion for healthy living comes from “growing up on a wonderful wholefoods diet and outdoor lifestyle”. Meanwhile Ramsay, who worked as a photographer in London for 15 years, is highly sought after by commercial clients and some of Australia’s favourite magazines for her food, lifestyle and interior photography. “I wanted the style of photography to match the feel of the recipes – fresh, abundant, clean and colourful,” she says.
“For the food photography, the focus of the images was light, colour and texture. For the lifestyle photography the aim was to produce authentic, aspirational images that highlight the beautiful environment that we are lucky to call home – the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula.” Birrell recently opened her first store, the Natural Harry Concept Store, in East Geelong, which stocks ethical clothing, homewares, skincare, perfume, zero-waste products and upcycled items. his Edwardian house will make entertaining a breeze. It has an area for formal occasions, a zone for casual events and a covered deck in the back garden that’s perfect for afternoon barbecues. To top it off, the property is only five minutes’ drive to North Geelong train station, providing easy access to transport for both its homeowners and any of their relatives and friends who want to come visit. Ideal for a family, the threebedroom dwelling is close to a number of schools, parks and Pakington Street cafes, shops and restaurants. The house makes a beautiful first impression in a cheerful blue, highlighting the 1920s leadlight windows. The period charm continues inside with arches in the hall and ceiling roses. The floor plan has been masterfully designed to allow a modern
extension in the rear to be closed off. This offers privacy in the formal lounge and dining room, at the front of the house, for intimate occasions. Here a palette of beige and pale green walls works with Victorian ash floorboards to create a sense of homeliness. The kitchen and open-plan meals and dining area that follow feel large and spacious thanks to a cathedral ceiling. The far wall is predominantly glass and sliding doors close away to reveal a large, timber deck. Well-equipped for the winter, the outside entertaining area is covered and overlooks the grassy garden. It’s a perfect spot for a game of outdoor cricket – but avoid ball-tampering. All of the bedrooms are on the left side of the house. The main is at the front and has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. There’s a study nook behind. Two more bedrooms are in the rear,
sharing a bathroom and powder room. There’s a shed in the left corner of the property and a carport for one at the front.

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon
Certificate IV Tourism TRAIN FOR A CAREER IN THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
