The first fashion show I attended was a David Jones parade. I was bestowed with a front row seat at the end of the runway. Carla Zampatti, the doyenne of Australian design, sashayed in wearing a cream suit that only a person with her poise could pull off. I asked Zampatti, as she took position beside me, if we were in good seats. “Darling,” she said, “if we were in Paris, people would kill us for these seats.” In this edition, we meet the new face of David Jones, Victoria Lee. It’s a role that any model would similarly kill for, and her humble origins mean the opportunity is not lost on her. ●

““I am Euphemia Blackthorne” … and I’m a psychic reader If pressed, I’d describe myself as an intuitive, or
psychic reader, but I don’t like titles. I don’t question my gifts – they just are. What I do is otherworldly, and how do you talk about the great unknown? My parents were old-school and adamant that I needed a “proper” job, so I learnt shorthand and typing and was a legal secretary at a big law firm for a couple of years. They saw me as madly creative, which I thought was odd because I was just me. Then I put myself through fashion school, but I was in fashion for far too long. Innately, I could feel that I was in the wrong place, and, eventually, the universe kicked me out. It was like the tower card in the tarot – there was an almighty bang, and I had a new life. I was shedding old skin that didn’t fit anymore. My parents’ reaction? Well, I’d already been a punk, and they were used to me changing.
When people come to see me, they’re generally intrigued. Often, it’s because they sense that something is little bit out of balance, or they’re fearful – even of their own hopes and dreams. They come for direction, clarity, acceptance and safety. Some customers are hard to crack, but once we get in there it all starts to flow. Some people are quite, “I want to know, but I’m scared,” so they shut themselves off. It’s about making them feel comfortable. I don’t tend to remember things from my sessions with customers. I let it go, because it’s not my journey. It’s lovely though when people come back and say, “Since seeing you, I’ve done this and that, and I’m feeling really good. You’ve helped me through something.” I’m not remotely in it for adulation, but that is satisfying.

Every morning when I wake up I do a ritual to get myself connected with the four elements and slough off the dreams, but otherwise I don’t have any expectations: every day is different. For instance, a couple of weeks ago, a Buddhist monk came in and we sat down and did a spell together. When it comes to doing readings, there’s an appropriateness of language. I guess that comes from experience and life experience. Customers are putting themselves in a vulnerable position, opening up to a stranger. You have to be sensitive to their circumstances. I had a reading once that still sticks with me, where I was told, “Get prepared because your father’s going to die.” He’s 92. Of course we’re all going to die, but that was completely inappropriate. I guess it made me confront my fears about it, though. ●

COVER STORY A catwalk favourite for one of the world’s biggest fashion houses, Australian supermodel and country girl Victoria Lee returns home for a much coveted role.
W
Victoria’s secret is out
hen 27-year-old model Victoria Lee became the latest face of David Jones, joining the department store for its spring/summer 2018 campaign, there were inevitably comparisons drawn with supermodel Miranda Kerr. The Australian women have plenty in common – both were born and raised in the country and rose to prominence as Victoria’s Secret models, with Lee sharing the lingerie brand’s catwalk with Bella Hadid last year in Shanghai. There’s also a hint of the girl-next-door about them, and cheekbones that could hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Born in Narrandera in the Riverina region of rural NSW, Lee wears her country heart on her sleeve. Her down-to-earth demeanour is what keeps her grounded in a business that is so competitive – especially when you call New York home. Perhaps it’s the fact she never set out to make it as a model that makes her appear less business-like and more in it for the wonderment. Making the move from NSW to New York six years ago wasn’t an easy step for a girl who was always home for family dinners and regularly visited her Nan (who still has Victoria’s childhood artworks hanging in her home). But, when the opportunity to start modelling nine years ago presented itself, Lee was up for the challenge and deferred a university degree in dietetics to try her luck in the Big Apple. “Where I’m from, people usually go straight to university after school or get a job, and nobody really pursues anything creative,” says Lee, who made her David
Jones runway debut for the spring/summer 2018 show in Sydney a few weeks ago. “I was scared to leave my country life to be honest,” she recalls. “I come from a close-knit family who do everything together. I had to put all my eggs in the one basket if I seriously wanted to pursue modelling and that meant going abroad. Everyone would ask me, ‘So what is your Plan B?’ I was like, ‘I am just hoping that Plan A works out’.” Lee, who has a younger brother Alex, never aspired to be a model but was always told as a young teen that she looked like one. When the opportunity came knocking, she initially agreed to do it to raise some pocket money, but it’s become a huge earner now. She’s walked in plenty of Australian Fashion Weeks, done a campaign for Seafolly and made the cover of the Rising Stars issue for Elle Australia. One of her first editorial shoots at Harper’s Bazaar also starred fellow DJs ambassador and model Jessica Gomes.
O
n the day we meet in Woolharra, in Sydney, Lee is thrilled her parents Chris and Jackie have also made the journey to see her. Among the conga line of agents, minders, models and make-up artists buzzing around the large Victorian mansion preparing for various shoots, her country folk look like they’ve just come in from a corner store. They sit in a corner in conversation with another Hadid, Anwar, who is in Australia for his first DJ’s gig. “I haven’t seen my dad in seven months, it’s so exciting to have them here,” she says. “Mum’s time is a little more flexible and can come and see me in Sydney at short

notice, I saw her two weeks ago. She’s been an amazing supporter of mine and very encouraging.” Home for Lee is now in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where she shares an apartment with her art director boyfriend Matt McDonald. “I don’t think my mum would like the idea of losing me to the States forever. I will always call Australia home,” she says. At 175 centimetres, Lee works hard to keep fit. She looks up to supermodels like Elle MacPherson and Megan Gale, and counts Cate Blanchett as style inspiration. “You have to be totally committed to the process,” she says of her figure. “Health and fitness is a lifestyle choice and I make a conscious decision every day to look after myself. I also want to live a long life. I go to the gym and eat well, but I don’t beat myself up if I want pancakes, I just make sure I balance it.” Lee, who says she has never felt shy in front of the camera, knows she owes a lot to being one of the lucky 55 models cast by Victoria’s Secret last year. Only a handful of Australian supermodels can say the same, including Kelly Gale and Bridget Malcolm. “I had a lot of nervous energy to burn in the day leading up to finding out whether I had been cast or not,” she recalls. “I was in the bathroom scrubbing my tiles frantically, trying to distract myself. “I was so engrossed that I missed seeing an email saying they wanted me in the show. If you asked me 10 years ago would I have ever imagined being a model, I would have just laughed. “It’s been a dream come true and I know the sort of doors a show like that can open for a model and I am ever grateful.” ●

FOOD For all his cheekiness the world’s most famous chef, Jamie Oliver, has serious unfinished business. Wo r d s
FRANK GRICE
STEVE RYAN
I
t was in 2005 when chef Jamie Oliver took on a televised project that is still shaping his culinary vision. In Jamie’s School Dinners, the ebullient foodie battled fearsome dinner ladies, outraged students and funding cuts to highlight the dangerous amount of processed food being fed to Britain’s school kids. Except, this wasn’t a British movement. It was global. “I guess I should have predicted it would go viral,” he says. “And perhaps it always should have anyway. It began talking about school dinners and how they were fundamental to our kids’ physical and mental wellbeing in daylight hours, but it enlarged into this bigger conversation about lunches in general and all the hidden nasties present in so much of what we give our kids, whether in school or out of it. “Like most things I take on, they begin as one little idea and soon morph into something I can’t really pull back in,” he laughs. Despite a number of obstacles and a rapidly expanding brief, Jamie’s School Dinners eventually led to a government-instigated overhaul of cafeteria menus across Britain which sought to replace processed and fried foods with healthier homecooked alternatives. Since School Dinners, his net has been cast everwider. Moving beyond British shores, that scope has seen his Food Revolution tackle issues in China, the US, Canada, and here in Australia. In part, it has propelled Oliver, who originally made his mark as the Naked Chef, transform from cheeky celebrity chef to bona fide social campaigner. He has fronted a number of televised movements
Naked ambition undertaking a degree in food nutrition. “What I love about almost every country this has been to is that we may not be speaking the same language or have the same words, but everyone understands [what’s] important,” he says. “You instinctively know what’s right and what’s wrong in a lunch – it’s just common sense. I think we are most closely aligned to Australia and New Zealand and it’s always been a thrill working there. “It’s that mutual respect we have for each other and it’s such a buzz to be able to have similar relationships across the other side of the world.”
“I think we are most closely aligned to Australia and New Zealand and it’s always been a thrill working there. It’s that mutual respect ... ” – such as 2008 series Ministry of Food – and has been part of a host of radical charity initiatives including his own Jamie’s Food Revolution, which states its mission as to “provoke debate and inspire real, meaningful, positive change in the way our children access, consume and understand food”. The desire to encourage children to see the benefits of healthy cooking even led to Oliver – a dyslexic who read his first book aged 38 –
Of course, as Oliver’s personal reputation has risen, so too have his charitable contributions and he is said to be the seventh most generous celebrity in the UK. His work earned him an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of General Practitioners and the esteemed TED Prize, which grants the winner US$100,000 ($138,000) to put towards their “wish to change the world”, which he stated in 2013 was
“your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity”. There have been leaps and bounds made in the fight against child obesity, and Oliver’s charities continue to work raising awareness of the more hidden aspects of a global epidemic. However, the chef himself has regularly asserted that the problems he has devoted so much time and money to combating start with how parents educate their children. With the march of technological advancement, Oliver is aware that the issue he is facing is now perhaps more widespread than it was more than a decade ago. “I have a problem with all these kids and iPhones, for example,” he wrote on his blog. “I see it first-hand: you go somewhere and a group of kids will hold up iPhones to take your picture. “They’re looking at me, and I’m looking at about £3000 ($5300) worth of phones thinking: ‘Are these seriously your phones?’ Why do you need this stuff?’ ” ● Starting in this edition, we’ll be regularly featuring recipes from Jamie Oliver. nspired by the ingredients that kept popping up in the Basilicatan region, I’ve come up with this beautiful salad recipe. One of the links and foundations is the marinating of the oranges with chilli, which also results in the creation of an incredible dressing that’s both punchy and refreshing, like a ray of Italian sunshine. ●
Matera Salad Rocket, mint, apple, crunchy veg, orange & chilli dressing Serves 4-6 30 minutes 1 clove of garlic 3 oranges 1 teaspoon dried red chilli flakes Red wine vinegar Extra virgin olive oil 100g red cabbage ½ a cucumber 6 small mixed-colour heritage carrots 4 sprigs of fresh mint 1 eating apple 50g wild rocket 200g ball of burrata
■
■
Jamie Cooks Italy by Jamie Oliver is published by Penguin Random House © Jamie Oliver Enterprises Limited
Method ■ Halve the garlic clove and rub the cut sides all over a large serving platter. Top and tail the oranges, trim away the peel, cut into rounds and
arrange on the platter. In a pestle and mortar, bash the chilli flakes with 1 teaspoon of sea salt until fine, then scatter most of it over the orange slices. Drizzle with 3 tablespoons each of red wine vinegar and oil and leave to marinate. Meanwhile, very finely shred the cabbage. Peel the cucumber and halve lengthways, removing the seedy core, then chop into small chunks. Wash the carrots and finely slice lengthways. Pick the mint leaves, slicing or tearing the larger ones. Core the apple and slice into thin wedges, then place it all on the platter with the rocket. Season with salt and black pepper, then gently toss together with your fingertips to dress. Tear open the soft, oozy burrata, place proudly on top of the salad, drizzle with a little more oil, sprinkle over the remaining chilli dust from a height, and serve. Great with a stack of hot toast on the side. ●

EXHIBITION Boxing gloves and fragile notes tell Mandela’s story.
NELSON MANDELA
A century in the making
W
ith the political climate heating up in Australia in recent months around race and immigration, a new Melbourne exhibition could offer a timely intervention. Mandela My Life: The Official Exhibition is a definitive collection of artefacts and stories documenting the extraordinary life and times of Nelson Mandela, regarded as the father of postapartheid South Africa. And, in a coup for Melbourne Museum, the exhibition will open for the first time in Melbourne before embarking on a five-year, Nelson Mandela Foundation-endorsed international tour. Items on display include a boxing glove signed and given to Mandela by Muhammad Ali, several of his stylish ‘Madiba’ silk shirts, and shoes and a walking cane from his senior years. But it’s his peaceful, stubborn and courageous resistance to systemic and institutionalised racism that he is best known for. Mandela famously spent 27 years in jail for his beliefs and emerged forgiving his captors. “For me, what’s inspiring about him is he’s not a perfect man,” says the exhibition’s curator, Samantha Heywood. “He spent more time on the ANC cause than he
did with his own family; he was, I suspect, quite hard to get close to, particularly after he came out of jail, he was emotionally a little bit shut down. He wasn’t a saint … he was flawed. But he nevertheless managed to achieve such amazing things.” Among Heywood’s favourite artefacts is a copy of a fragile note written by Mandela before a trial in which he faced the death penalty, and one of his ink-stained, heavily worn leopard-print silk shirts.

Angus Leendertz, 65, a self-described “apartheid refugee” who emigrated from South Africa to Australia in 1980, says he is appalled by Dutton’s comments. “Mandela’s message of reconciliation and inclusion is more important now than ever before to build a non-racial society,” he says. ●

n a career first, Australian fashion designer Akira Isogawa rides the ’80s wave with a unisex collection that blurs gender identity. “This collection was designed to be more gender neutral,” says a softly spoken Isogawa, who moved to Sydney from Japan in 1986 and started studying fashion at East Sydney Tech a few years later. Titled Vicious Beauty, the 25th anniversary resort collection plays on the notion of what it means to be masculine and feminine.
Under Isogawa’s watchful eye, fashion is where boys will be girls, and vice versa. It’s also the first time Isogawa has experimented with an era that harks back to his teenage years – when new romantics, big hair and bold prints ruled the landscape. “I use motifs from vintage 1980s textiles my friend Diane, a seamstress, gave me when I first arrived in Australia,” he recalls, of the box of fabrics he unearthed while searching for inspiration. “The fabrics sat there and I contemplated what I would do with them.” Isogawa is one of Australia’s leading fashion designers and leans on avant-garde and abstract forms to deliver silhouettes built for layering. His pieces are feminine without the frills, sexy without overt skin exposure, and he chimes on his Japanese past with occasional nods to kimono life. He is notoriously shy, a quietly spoken master of his trade who works from his studio in Marrickville and recently showed the collection at Melbourne Fashion Week.

A 1980s salute by Akira Isogawa in his Resort 19 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
“Fashion evolves – that’s the nature of it and, as designers, we need to modify,” he says of keeping his vision true to his DNA, but open to new forms of expression. “I am mindful to not alienate our market audience, but this time I felt there was a real need to do a unisex collection to show another side of the brand.” Soft pastels and subtle prints drive Vicious Beauty – a collection steeped in ruffles, sequins and organza. If you asked Isogawa 10 years ago if he considered the ’80s a vintage era, he would have convinced you otherwise, but these days he’s OK with that salute. Growing up in Kyoto, where his family still lives, Isogawa says he would rather forget his own fashion faux pas of the time. “I became quite fashion conscious in the
’80s and started buying clothes for myself,” he says. “I was quite embarrassed by what I looked like and avoided it as a point of reference in my own work,” he adds. But he’s made peace with that past. “In 1980-81 I was listening to a lot of underground Japanese bands and British new-romantic rock. I only wore black and grey – it was a very dark period in fashion – it’s what everybody was doing so it was a social norm you could say,” he says. “It took coming to Australia to embrace colour and I’ve filtered that influence into my collections. “The light in Australia was instantly noticeable to me, the bright sky and lightness all around. It deserved to be replicated in colour.” ●

SAM WOOD \ FITNESS
Under starter’s orders
I
f the only exercise you’ve done in the last six months is changing your doona cover or carrying all the shopping inside in one trip then that’s OK, there is no time like the present to make your health and fitness a priority. Whether you’ve never been much of an exerciser or you’ve simply gone through a lull during winter, the important thing is that you ease into it with care so you don’t bash and crash. I totally understand that the hardest part is starting, but once you do a workout or two those endorphins will kick in and have you craving more. Keep in mind, the first week will always be the hardest. You’re changing routine, you’re developing new habits and there’s bound to be some cravings and some muscle soreness. Here are some simple tips to help you get started slowly but surely:
16
DOM A IN REV IEW
DON’T GO TOO HARD, TOO FAST \ It’s important
to recognise that motivation is likely to be high as you’re excited about starting something new or getting back into working out. However, trying to undo months (perhaps years) of not taking care of your body in a week is not the right approach. If you push yourself too hard too early you’re likely to be very sore, potentially injure yourself and dramatically increase the chances of stopping before you truly get started. Start slow and gradually build the intensity and frequency of your workouts. START WITH SOMETHING YOU ENJOY \ If you’ve never been into running, don’t make a long run your first workout back. Begin with a workout you enjoy or one you think you will enjoy and try as many things as it takes
until you find something that you will stick to. A group body pump class, a walk with a friend, a pilates class – it doesn’t matter. Just doing something active is the way to go to start building up that positive momentum.
GETTY IMAGES
KEEP IT CONSISTENT \ Too many times I’ve seen
people launch into a new workout regime with reckless enthusiasm. Your motto should always be “progress, not perfection” and while you want to be building early momentum, you don’t want to go too hard too early. Our bodies are definitely designed to move every day, however something will always be better than nothing and two or three workouts per week with rest days in between could be the perfect combination for you to build that early momentum but still have great consistency. For those of you who are still a little timid about getting out and trying a new location or program,
here’s a really comfortable anyone-can-do home workout to get you moving. 20 lunges (10 each leg) 20 body-weight squats ■ 10 push-ups (from your knees or toes) ■ 20 jumping jacks ■ 20 bicycle crunches Repeat three times ■ ■
Don’t forget to start every workout with a warmup and a cool-down. A solid warm-up prepares your body for activity and is especially important for muscles that haven’t done anything strenuous in quite some time. It’s likely you’ll be a little tight and sore for a couple of days after your workout but cooling down with a stretch after your workout can help to minimise some of the soreness. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

EDUCATION & INNOVATION
Providing an education for life
STEPHEN McKENZIE
SPECIAL PROMOTION
W
hen Stuart Davis arrived at St Leonard’s College in Brighton, he was the ninth principal in the school’s 104-year history. St Leonard’s College began with eight students who received lessons in a church hall. Today it is one of bayside’s leading independent coeducational schools. Throughout this time, the school’s culture of lifelong learning, self-confidence, integrity, resilience and creativity have remained. But its programs in and out of the classroom are constantly evolving to enable students to develop skills and qualities that are essential in a changing world. It’s all about providing an “education for life”, Davis says. “One of our greatest innovations has been the gift of time. Smaller class sizes mean increased opportunities to mentor our young people to develop the skills and attributes to help them become well-rounded, thoughtful and responsible members of society,” he says. In 2018, students from the Early Learning Centre through to year 12 are embracing the theme, “I am responsible for ...” Davis sees this as a way of fostering deeper thinking and social action on a local, national and international scale. “I want our students to realise they are responsible for anything they can influence in life. We are very fortunate to live in Australia and the beautiful bayside bubble is delightful but insular. We want to take our students out of that insularity and create activists,” he says. Recently, St Leonard’s College bought a van, Lennie’s Van, to support disadvantaged members of the local community. The van travels to local destinations and housing estates where students provide breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea services to children and adults in need. “Our students are so grateful to know they can make a difference. At an age when a teenager’s sole purpose is often finding gratification for themselves, they see that a greater sense of purpose comes in being of value to other people,” Davis says. The St Leonard’s community also supports three schools and an ELC in Bangladesh and has created a beneficiary institution to maintain these responsibilities. Year 9 students travel to Asia where they build a home for a family with funds they raise

through school activities – an initiative called the Big Experience. “It teaches them entrepreneurship to raise funds and then they build a house, meet the family who will live in that house, and they are blown away by the fact that they can have an impact on people’s lives. They come back from that experience and they are changed,” Davis says. The school recently appointed a head of social action, global citizenship and engagement and, from this year, each house within the school will support projects that will require them to be socially active and broad thinking. “We’ve also created a competition across our senior school with teams of students working out how they can do the greatest good anywhere in the world with a hypothetical $2000. As I walked through the library recently I had groups of students discussing their ideas with me. If you want young people to take responsibility, you have to give them responsibility,” he says.
St Leonard’s was the first Victorian school to offer students the choice of either the VCE or International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. More recently, it became one of the first schools in Australia to be invited to join the OECD Future of Education and Skills 2030 project. The initiative aims to help countries determine what knowledge, skills, attitudes and values are needed for students to thrive towards 2030. “What world will today’s preps step into in 2030? There won’t be the same percentage going to university and they won’t be as transfixed on a numeric score. Instead they’ll focus on competencies nominated by the OECD such as self-agency and a sense of humanity,” Davis says. “In October I go to Paris to be part of the OECD project with more than 30 nations. Our college community will be part of that education and government network and that is going to be very exciting for our young people.” ● SARAH MARINOS

Me & My Coach
HANNAH SCHMIDT & TIM MULVIHILL SPECIAL PROMOTION
T
he head coach at Mentone Grammar’s Bayside Aquatics centre, Tim Mulvihill, and year 10 student Hannah Schmidt share a passion for swimming and “the relentless pursuit of excellence”. Tim has been coaching Hannah for the past two years, and they have their sights set on Hannah winning a medal at the national titles and representing her country.
I joined Mentone Grammar in year 7 and met Tim during year 8. I’ve been swimming since I was three, initially with a Learn to Swim program. My family moved to Singapore for four years and I was in the water every day there. When we returned to Melbourne I joined a competitive squad. I love the challenge of competing and you get to know yourself very well when you’re training, too. I’ve learnt that I get bored very easily, that I’m not scared of hard work and that I’m a perfectionist. My relationship with Tim was a bit rocky initially! A new coach means change and I don’t like change! I told him that I only swam freestyle, but he made me do all the other strokes and said I was going to be an individual medley swimmer, too. I cried at first. But at the nationals this year I made the 200-metre freestyle final and placed eighth and I was eighth in the 200-metre individual medley final. Placing in the 200-metre medley was a highlight of my swimming career and I realised Tim was on to something after all. All my times have dropped significantly with Tim. I train nine times a week in the pool, for about two hours each session. I also train three times a week in the gym or doing yoga or Pilates. Swimming is a very disciplined sport and that translates to my school work. Swimming has taught me about time management, organisation and prioritising and you learn to deal with disappointments. You have to bounce back and believe you will get better. My favourite subjects are maths, science and sports science and I’ve also been involved in school productions, choir, school tours, debating, cross country, athletics and surf life saving. I want to study engineering after school and I’d

also like to win a medal at nationals and make the Australian swimming team.
TIM SAYS ... I come from a family of teachers in Brisbane but, while I was studying teaching at university, I became hooked on coaching. It allows you to help others become the best person they can be and that’s very rewarding. Competitive swimming helps the young people I work with develop skills that will make them champions in life. For the nine years before I joined Mentone Grammar, I coached in America at the South Shore YMCA, south of Boston. We had 40,000 members and I was the director of competitive swimming and managed a team of 250 athletes. I returned to Australia in 2016 and joined Mentone Grammar because the school had great facilities and was very supportive of swimming as a sport. I talk to the young people I work with about the “relentless pursuit of excellence” and I enjoy putting
a plan in place to help swimmers like Hannah achieve their goals. Swimming means you are often alone with your thoughts in the water for hours on end for days, weeks, months and years with the possibility of improving your performance by a couple of seconds. That’s a challenge and the sport only attracts the most industrious students who have world-class time management skills and a prodigious work ethic. The first thing I noticed about Hannah was her technique. She had excellent balance and moved smoothly through the water. Then I noticed her confidence and humour and open communication have been the cornerstone of our relationship. She has a passionate personality. If Hannah is having a good day or a bad day, I know about it! Initially that was confronting because I hadn’t had that many swimmers who were so vocal and honest. But her heart is so big and, when she races, you have to be your absolute best to beat her because she won’t make it easy for you. ● SARAH MARINOS

In a Place Names Guide to the Totally Obvious, Elwood would get top marks for spelling it out. Foam Street, Wave Street, Spray Street … Hey! There must be a bay! And that body of water is clearly close if the evidence of this lustrous new penthouse is to be followed. One block from the foreshore park, the building on the Ormond Road corner was designed by architects Ewert Leaf. It commands a magnificent outlook north, east and west and a dash of city-skyline dazzle. Every principal room opens to the terrace, which hugs the apartment on three sides and welcomes the wild elements while being perfectly sheltered. The penthouse has a simple floor plan: spacious living, dining and kitchen with butler’s pantry; main bedroom with dressing room and en suite; second bedroom with en suite; third bedroom, skylit main bathroom, laundry, double-desk study nook; big windows, natural light. Take the lift or stairs to the basement garage. Less quantifiable is the calm it evokes. The interior is full of well-considered details to make one’s life easy, even blissful. Engineered oak floorboards, marble surfaces and discreet storage ensure good looks with minimal housework. The kitchen is complemented by an outdoor Beefeater barbecue and wine fridge, likely to become a beacon for friends in summer. There’s even a chic trick to stop work intruding on fun – close the study doors and walk away. The oak-floored hall has sensor footlights and floor-toceiling cupboards.
