When Melbourne cruelly lost the beloved Sisto Malaspina, who had run Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar on Bourke Street since 1974, the tributes warmly reflected on his pioneering role in our coffee culture. It was a loving reminder of the early Italian influence on this city, and that contribution continues – with typical passion – in the next generation across food, the arts and fashion. Jane Rocca spoke to four youthful Melburnians of Italian heritage who, with a respectful touch of nostalgia, are the modern custodians of their culture in this town and the ongoing wonderful wave of influence. ●

FIRST PERSON

““I am Gary Mehigan ” … and I’m a judge on MasterChef Everybody asks me what will be different with

season 11 of MasterChef Australia, how can this concept still work? If you compare season one to 11, they’re chalk and cheese. Since we started the show, the food landscape has changed dramatically. The conversation around food has too, and it means we’re seeing a higher standard every year we come back to TV. This season’s MasterChef brings more diversity in food. Our food has become more spicy and textural. The slippery to smooth, gooey to crunchy. We see influences from south-east Asia – Thai and Vietnamese, Indian, Malaysian. What we get to see is various contestants interpret food in a different way; an 18-year-old might approach a dish completely differently to a 40-year-old. The show not only changes the lives of those who compete, but mine has shifted from having a life as a restauranteur and working as a chef – if you like, a relatively narrow band of daily experiences – to one where that is amplified and I get to travel a lot for my work. My fascination with food has become much more global. We never expected the show to become a worldwide hit. We are broadcast in 180 countries, watched by 20 million people including in India, South America, Brazil, the UK and France. Every year I think that season might be the last but it hasn’t been the case. I am living my dream job. George Calombaris, Matt Preston and I describe ourselves as the three ultimate food nerds. We went on a boys’ trip to celebrate 10 years of the show last year. We did a 16-day tour and visited Naples, Barcelona, the Caribbean and more. We reset, recalibrated, researched and got some great life experience along the way. I’d love to see us all move into more travel-based food shows. Aussie audiences don’t want their celebrities to get too big for their boots – they acknowledge you with your first name if they see you on the street. I get a lot of that when I visit a supermarket or go to the post office. ● MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA \ 7.30pm, Sunday to Thursday, Network Ten

COVER STORY The hot-right-now custodians of

Melbourne’s rich Italian culture add their own flair.

new wave of second and third-generation Italians is helping shape the cultural heart of Melbourne, quietly doing their bit to crank up our art, food, fashion and bar scene. From four-time Archibald People’s Choice award winner Vincent Fantauzzo (best known for his portrait of Heath Ledger) to food and wine purveyors, King & Godfree cousins Jamie Valmorbida and Luca Sbardella, Melbourne’s close link to Italy has long been part of the city’s DNA but there’s a new age upon us.

VI N C E N T FA N TAUZ ZO

KRISTOFFER PAULSEN

Having a distinctive Italian name always identified me as Italian and now having a hotel named after me is a gutsy move for Art Series Hotels. That they were willing to go with what might be a difficult name for people to pronounce is even gutsier. I was asked the question could they call it The Vincent hotel, but I liked The Fantauzzo [open in Brisbane]. I constantly have people ask me how to say my name, but it’ll be fun and interesting, I guess, to see how people respond to it. Their hotel concepts are all about celebrating Australian artists and now I can represent the Italian-Australian version with a very Italian name. I come from a family of creative Italians; they were chefs, sculptors and into painting. Food has had the biggest impact on my family and Asher (Keddie) and I cook Italian food at home every night and make a point of eating with the kids. I have been talking about opening a cake shop with my cousin next year – that’s the plan and dream to bring some of my grandfather’s pastries to life. What you’re seeing in Melbourne now is a return to Italian traditions by younger generations. When I was young we strayed from the tradition of making salami, the sauce, our own wine. Now, with the influx of Italians in Melbourne, we see a lot of this nostalgia coming back. When I travel to Italy, my cousins are more contemporary than the Italians here and they have this fascination that we are doing what their parents did. It’s a weird time warp but one that really identifies Italians in Australia.

Everything I do in business stems from my Italian heritage. We really want to demonstrate what we enjoy about Italy and bring it to our city. My grandfather came out from Italy in the ’50s and did so well in Melbourne that it gave us the opportunity to grow his legacy at the original site in Carlton. Italian cuisine and hospitality is definitely changing in Melbourne. You have Ronnie Di Stasio and Guy Grossi who continue their legacy of traditional Italian food, but I see us as a new wave of Italians. Our business is a hybrid model, which is really obvious in Italy now – what that means is you don’t just go into a deli and buy your basics, you can eat a panini, have a pasta, stay for dinner and drink wine. We bring the whole aspect to the table. Johnny’s Green Room [upstairs at King & Godfree] is very Italian but the most relaxed version of Italy and a good representation of what bars in Milan and Rome are starting to look like. We wanted that vibe that pays homage to my grandfather and reflects something I take from Italy every time I go there and replicate a piece of it in Melbourne.

The reopening of King & Godfree [in Carlton] salutes our heritage and what my grandfather established. It’s also a celebration of Italian food and its culture. Luca Sbardella [cousin] and I are passionate about design – we wanted to create a modern Italian corner. Music is also important part of the arrival of Johnny’s Green Room on the rooftop – it’s a perfect way to merge Italian bar life with music and playlists via a collaboration with Hope St Radio, a not for profit organisation in Melbourne. In the ’70s and ’80s, Carlton was in its heyday – it was preceded by the huge influx of Italians who came here in the ’50s and ’60s. I think in many ways that is happening again now. There have been a lot of young Italians coming to Melbourne and hopefully within the next 10 years we’ll see another resurgence of Italian culture. It’s our mission to keep our Italian legacy alive in Melbourne – from the staples my Nonno imported like tuna and olive oil, and then my father with coffee, to what we’re doing in food retail and hospitality, is a sign that Italian culture is an essential ingredient to Melbourne’s identity.

I’m a second-generation Italian and I first visited Italy with my family in 1988, in 2001 on my own and since then gone back as part of my work. It continues to educate and reconnect me to my heritage. The loss of Pellegrini’s Sisto Malaspina in Melbourne last year really affected everybody, not just Italians. Whether you went to Pellegrini’s for a pasta, granita or coffee you had an intimate experience – it’s the familiarity and comfort that really saluted the Italian way. I helped bring Bulgari’s Italian Jewels exhibition to the gallery in 2016. Through this I’ve been able to travel to Italy for research and always bring new information home. In 2012, the NGV merged our Australian and International galleries to deliver bigger exhibitions and we’ve since been able to be on par with some of the world’s best museums in bringing shows like Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier to our city. Melbourne has an appetite for fashion and art and we’re on par with V&A in London and the Met in New York. We can do big-scale exhibitions and present an artist’s life and work in a way that is quite major now.

I joined my father’s business Dom Bagnato in 2010; first as a graphic designer and now as creative director and brand manager. My earliest memory with dad was working with him in his Bourke Street shop, sitting on the back floor and playing – it ingrained a work ethic in my mind. My Italian heritage is part of my DNA; it’s who I am and the soul of the brand. We travel for our collections every year to Italy and it inspires what we do. We lap up the culture and bring aspects of it back for our Australian audience. The secret to getting it right is all about sticking to your guns, staying true to your style and knowing that what works on the streets of Italy doesn’t translate here entirely. I didn’t want to enter a family business and land on my feet. I stayed in the background and moved slowly. It’s been in the past three years that my role has really changed. The thing that has driven me is the sense of pride of what my dad has created from a young age. It makes me want to keep this going for as long as possible. We are in the feelgood business in clothing – if people come in to buy a suit, they do so to feel good and want to wear it. ●

Welcome strangers Coming to Melbourne stage is the uplifting true tale of a town’s generosity in the shadow of terror.

ust hearing about the real-life story that inspired the musical Come From Away might induce tears: when the awful tragedy of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks unfolded, and TV screens reverberated with the images of jet planes flying into New York’s Twin Towers, a town’s collective act of kindness was also in play. Miles away from Manhattan, in the town of

Gander – on the Canadian island of Newfoundland – 38 planes in transit were forced to land, following the command to shut down American airspace. This teeny town with a population of less than 10,000 found themselves suddenly faced with the problem of welcoming nearly 7000 stranded airline crew members and passengers. Only for the good people of Gander, this wasn’t a problem. The way they generously opened their hearts and homes to complete strangers proved that on one of the most terrible days in history, the best of humanity was on display as well. That’s the story of the musical Come From Away, which has been a surprise hit on Broadway and the West End – and will no doubt find an equally responsive audience in Melbourne. One of the linchpins of the play is Beverley Bass,

played by Australian actress Zoe Gertz. Bass, a pilot for American Airlines, was well known in aviation circles before 9/11, being the first female pilot promoted to captain by American Airlines in 1986. When Bass initially heard that a musical was being made about those who landed in Gander for a four-day stay, she didn’t pay much attention. She only understood it was a reality when the producers invited her and her husband to its premiere, in the summer of 2015. “I didn’t go to any of the workshops or festivals for it, so I was very ignorant about it,” she says. “We didn’t know what we were sitting down to see. And then it was mind-blowing. The first time we watched it, both of our heads were buried in our hands. I think we only saw five per cent of the first show. It was so beautifully done and they stayed so true to the real people.

Wo r d s

“They didn’t have to make up stories; they had thousands of stories [from our experiences].” It’s clear that, almost two decades on, Bass is still in awe of the kindness that she and the rest of the “Come From Aways” were shown. After being grounded on the tarmac on September 11, her plane’s crew and passengers were allowed to disembark at 7.30am the next day. By that point, none of them had touched solid ground for 28 hours. “When we walked into the terminal, we saw tables full of food. There was enough food for everyone, which indicated that the whole town had been cooking all night to prepare it,” she says. “We were in a very unique place, and it just continued from there for four days. There wasn’t anything they wouldn’t do for you.” Continued p10

One man handed her the keys to his brand new pick-up truck and instructed Bass to use it for as long as she wanted. Trickier, though, was the planeload that had been en route to Orlando, filled with 90 seriously ill kids from a children’s wish organisation who were supposed to go to Disney World. “They had somebody dress up as Commander Gander. People took them on canoe rides and entertained them, so that they wouldn’t miss Disney [World] at all.” She’s still in disbelief over the town’s pharmacists, who filled over 2000 prescriptions, because nobody could access their luggage. “And they didn’t take a dime for any of that … the [townspeople] don’t think they did anything special. That’s just who they are,” Bass says. As the lead in the Melbourne production of Come From Away, Gertz might ostensibly seem like an odd fit: at 34, she’s nearly 20 years younger than her real-life counterpart.

Retired American Airlines Captain Beverley Bass with her uniform at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum, right; Bass and actor Zoe Gertz, above.

“When I read the casting brief, I thought, ‘Goodness, I don’t know if there’s anything that’s right for me’,” she says. “What I didn’t realise was, they hire actors not based on their age or look, but based on an actor’s ability and energy … The thing about Come From Away is that in every company from all over the world the actors are very different in the way we look.” But Gertz does have one secret advantage: her father worked for Qantas for 20 years, as an accountant. Perhaps that’s why she burst into tears the first time she met Bass, which took place when she was asked to sing one of the play’s key songs – Me and the Sky – at a Qantas training facility in Alexandria, for 150 women in aviation. She didn’t know Bass would be there and “she ran towards me and gave me the biggest hug. She said ‘I’m so excited and honoured to meet you’, and I was just crying and going, ‘Are you serious?’ ”

And although the play is steeped in the terror of September 11, Gertz points out that it’s not really a show about those events. “It’s not a 9/11 story. It’s a 9/12 story. It’s about what happened after, and how this small town banded together and led with kindness and love. And those themes are universal.” For Bass, the far-reaching effect of the play still stuns. As a result of Come From Away’s tremendous success – it has won many theatrical accolades including a coveted Tony Award - tourists now visit Gander and are sometimes led on tours by several of the real-life players in this story. She calls the play a “masterpiece” and adds that “I

don’t think any of us imagined that it would become a world phenomenon like it has. “When we open in Australia, we will have five companies in four countries on three continents playing eight times a week. Simultaneously. I don’t know if you can say that about another play,” she says. “I left Gander on September 15 and I said, ‘I wish the world could know what Gander did for us’. And now the world is learning.” ● COME FROM AWAY \ Preview performances start July 3, premiering July 20, Comedy Theatre, Melbourne. Tickets are now on sale. ● comefromaway.com.au

elbourne author Melanie Cheng announced her arrival last year when she took out the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Fiction for her short-story collection Australia Day. With her first novel the writer establishes herself as a perceptive observer of the human condition. Room for a Stranger is a sweeping tale of love, loss and loneliness. In the aftermath of a shocking home invasion, 75-year-old unmarried pensioner Meg Hughes joins a homeshare program in the hope of finding some security. Enter 21-year-old Hong-Kong born medical student Andy Chan, who takes up residence in Meg’s spare room. Andy is struggling with his course, as well as the cultural transition in Australia. Not helping his anxiety is the fact his father’s cleaning business in Hong Kong has recently

collapsed, which is why the young student is no longer renting a city apartment. It’s an awkward start, but over the course of this fabulous book Cheng takes Meg and Andy on a journey of discovery. For Meg, Andy provides a human connection, something she has longed for since the death of her ailing sister three years previously. For Andy, his eyes are opened to a world beyond study and family pressures, and a yawning cultural gap is bridged.

Here’s a tale to make the vintage hunters weep for paradise lost and beauty trashed. Spoiler alert – there’s a happy ending! As a uni student, the owner of this Victorian cottage paid his way with the tragic job of ripping up bowling alleys, which had become uncool. But he found recyclers and kept the best wood for the day he bought a renovator’s delight. And when he snared the worst house in the best street (near Balaclava station, looks like a cul-de-sac, lovely neighbours with kids at St Kilda Primary) the old alley was ready to roll again. “You could drop a ball on this floor with no damage,” he says of the side hall where the slender floorboards, about 1.5 centimetres wide, glow like gold. The floorboards, the laying of which drove the builders crazy, continue into the open-plan living, dining and kitchen. Renovated in 2012, the block-fronted cottage is now a twostorey family home with zoned bedrooms and the glorious north-west aspect granted by the courtyard garden. The decked verandah, with bromeliads below, is an honest street-level indication of the love and care taken in transforming this property. The skylit hall leads to two carpeted double bedrooms with wardrobes. The white, fully-tiled bathroom has a deep bath with a rain shower above. Hosts of the cultural kind will appreciate the open-plan area, a stylish space in which to dish up a feast followed by movies or a book club meeting. The living area has an entertainment unit, with bookcases tucked into the glass staircase. The white stone kitchen has a waterfall island, an

Walkable to Chapel Street, Albert Park Lake and St Kilda Junction, this terrace-row house has a prime position in one of Windsor’s prettiest streets. The perky polychrome has a north-facing garden with a courtyard. Renovated in dashing style, it has two double bedrooms at the front, one with a fireplace and both with wardrobes. The skylit kitchen and meals area looks smart in black and white on a chequerboard floor and has a gas stove. Running parallel to this is the living room, which has french doors to the garden. Though unusual, it’s a likeable floor plan and has scope for extension. There’s a rear, refurbished bathroom and an outside laundry and powder room. ● ALISON BARCLAY Agent: The Agency, Adrian Wood 0404 861 508 Price: $880,000-$950,000 Auction: 11.30am, July 6
