The portrait of Adam Goodes on our cover, captured by photographer Nic Walker, illustrates the calm focus the football great has in his life. He tells journalist Jane Rocca, in her exclusive interview with the dual Brownlow medallist and former Australian of the Year, that family and education are his top priorities. While nurturing his young daughter with wife Natalie, he is also fostering the next generation of Indigenous pupils through his foundation, handin-glove with his David Jones’ ambassadorial role. The goal posts have moved post-footy, and his determination is resolute. ●

COVER STORY

f retired AFL legend Adam Goodes is living his version of the Australian Dream, it’s happening right now at home in the eastern suburbs of Sydney with his wife Natalie and their newborn daughter Adelaide. Becoming a father has had a profound effect on the 39-year-old former Sydney Swan and dual Brownlow medallist; a moment he’s been waiting for and couldn’t be happier about. He’s soaking up every minute, enjoying pram laps around the neighbourhood and getting acquainted with Adelaide, who is just six weeks old. “Adelaide is doing great,” he beams, having just returned home for this interview after Domain Review’s exclusive shoot in Sydney with photographer Nic Walker. “I’m loving the new challenge I have in front of me.

Football great and first-time dad Adam Goodes shares his family’s joy and explains why he is letting a new documentary do the talking.

“It’s been so nice to take time off work to be with Natalie and our baby girl and to get to know her. “I’m also loving the added responsibility of being her dad, and understanding her little cries and the noises she makes. It really is a special time in our lives. “She also knows the difference between night and day, or at least that’s what we believe because she loves her sleep just like her parents do.” But for every coo and cuddle happening at home, Goodes is well aware the headlines are emerging once again, picking up where they left off after he retired from the Swans four years ago. Following two premierships, All-Australian honours and twice winning the game’s highest individual award, it was a departure from the pinnacle of the sport that was truly undeserved.

“The best thing about me agreeing to let Ian Darling make The Final Quarter is that it’s giving people a chance to listen to what was really said and what I said in that time in my life. “It also shows what other commentators said on air and in the media at the time and gives the public a sense and better understanding of the situation in terms of what they may have heard the first time around. “I’ve also tried to let these documentaries do the talking for me and that’s what I will do going forward.” At the end of August, Goodes will travel with Natalie and Adelaide back to the Flinders Ranges to bury the placenta under a tree, a ritual that is very important to him. “For us, it’s really a grounding custom that

His role with David Jones is philanthropic – instrumental in helping the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation, and highlighting education empowerment among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. A focus of the GO Foundation (which David Jones has also partnered with) is on funding scholarships to provide Indigenous pupils with access to education, and galvanising their cultural identity. “From the day I retired from football, everything shifted for me,” Goodes says. “I have completely moved on from my football career, but I am passionate about the work I am doing with the foundation and helping other Indigenous entrepreneurs with their businesses and it’s something I am really working hard towards building.

“From the day I retired from football, everything shifted for me.” The abuse and booing Goodes endured towards the end of his 372-game career was exposed in a documentary comprising archival footage and screened on Network Ten this month. Ian Darling’s The Final Quarter was given the nod of approval by Goodes and exposed the intensity of racism on and off the footy field. A new Goodes documentary will launch the Melbourne International Film Festival at the gala opening on August 1, and it stars Goodes and his family. The Australian Dream, in cinemas from August 22 and written by broadcast journalist Stan Grant, explores just what it means to be Australian. “The Australian Dream for me is a companion piece to Ian Darling’s documentary of archival footage about what happened to me,” Goodes says. “The Australian Dream features me, my wife and other Indigenous leaders opening up about the ‘Australian Dream’, what is it and what it means for us to live in a great country, but there is a little something that is not right too and we want to raise more awareness about it.

connects a part of mum and baby back to the Flinders Ranges where she and our people come from,” he says. “I am looking forward to being able to instil in Adelaide what it means to be an Indigenous person who is proud of her heritage.” Goodes says his mother hasn’t met Adelaide yet, but he and Natalie will welcome family members very soon. “Everyone in the family is very excited for us,” he says. “But we’ve been reluctant to have many visitors. “We have wanted to stay in the bubble as long as possible and it’s an important time for us to bond as a family. I have organised my mum, brother Jake and niece and nephew to come up at the start of next month after Adelaide has had her six-week shots. We’ll be a bit more open after she’s had those done.” Goodes, the 2014 Australian of the Year, founded the GO Foundation with his good friend and fellow former Swans star Michael O’Loughlin, and for the past four years, he has been an ambassador for department store David Jones.

“Hopefully one day I can give something for young Adelaide to step into. I’ve also worked hard to be in a position where I can be a present dad for her. To be there for my wife and our daughter, that’s my top priority.” Goodes says he won’t mind if Adelaide wants to play football, but says education comes first. “My wife is from a very academic family and Adelaide’s grandfather is a primary school principal. Education is the game-changer for me and it’s allowed me to get where I am,” he says. “If Adelaide wants to play football, soccer, netball, whatever it might be, she will get every opportunity to play.” Goodes keeps fit by playing basketball each week with a group of former Swans players and for the past two years has competed in an over-35s soccer team. “I feel it’s come full circle,” he says. “To go back and play soccer like I did when I was a kid has been so rewarding, I am loving the competitiveness.” ● ● gofoundation.org.au ● davidjones.com ● miff.com.au

vie Jones is back in town. The Gogglebox star, who has spread her wings and blossomed into a popular presenter, has moved back to Melbourne to take the microphone on Fox FM’s breakfast show Fifi, Fev and Byron while Fifi Box is on maternity leave. Jones, 46, lived in Melbourne 12 years ago when she worked in publicity at Channel 7 and is thrilled to have returned from Sydney, settled in a new home eager to rekindle her love of the city. “I love the social life, there’s so many venues with live music. Melbourne everywhere you go there’s some kind of music playing and I just think that feeds everyone’s soul,’’ she says. “I’ve been looking for a reason to get back here and as soon as I got offered a maternity role I jumped and went ‘I’m relocating!’ and they said, ‘oh, you don’t have to move permanently’ and I went ‘well I’m doing it’. “I was a northside girl, I lived in Fitzroy and Collingwood. I used to go to Brunetti in Lygon Street and get a coffee and a rum baba, take it into the Nova cinema, watch a movie by myself, dripping the honey and rum all over myself while drinking my coffee then go over to Readings and spend an hour perusing. I used to do that every week, so I’ll have to take myself back and do that again.” After Jones and her Gogglebox partner and housemate Angie Kent decided to get off the couch, they entered the jungle on Ten’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Jones came runner-up and it’s been a whirlwind ever since – she’s become a regular panellist on Studio 10 and The Project and has had just one media-free week. “This year has just been crazy – I went to the jungle in January and ever since it’s gone

gangbusters. I’ve never been happier. It’s a new life to be leading.” So, how did she land a plum fill-in breakfast gig? “It was Brendan Fevola and his wife, Alex, who put me forward. They were fans of mine in the jungle and knowing Fifi would be taking maternity leave, Fev put my name in the mix so I’ve got him to thank,’’ Jones says. “It’s been such a seamless takeover. I got to know Fifi, it was so wonderful and just a shame we didn’t get to work together, but you never know what the future holds. “It’s a really nice little seat to sit in while Fifi has the baby.” When it comes to being a true Melburnian at heart, Jones ticks two very important boxes. “I’m a huge coffee snob. I used to nanny for Toby

Wo r d s

Smith (of Toby’s Estate) so he taught me coffee. I used to have sugar and he’d be very proud of me now because I haven’t put sugar in my coffee for years. He changed me, he showed me how to taste coffee. Now, god I love a coffee and Melbourne does the best coffee. “The first time I moved to Melbourne everyone asked ‘do you like Melbourne better than Sydney?’ and ‘which footy team do you support?’ About 15 years ago I had a friend here and we went to see the Swans play Carlton, it was the last year Carlton played at Princes Park and Fev was actually playing for the Blues. “So, I barrack for Sydney, but the Swans used to be South Melbourne which is still very Melbourne and the suburb I now work in.” ●

f the old adage that one shouldn’t mix business with pleasure has any merit, then Jasmine Stefanovic and her best friend Tamie Ingham are defying the odds and proving they’ve got the winning formula to succeed in business. The fashion duo behind cult shoe label Mara & Mine have built an empire based on friendship, and pooled their funds together to start a business – the rest is luxury slipper flats with all the silver linings one could wish for.

A love of travel inspires their designs [think the Amalfi Coast and Mexico], with pieces snapped up by Hollywood’s “it” crowd (including model Cara Delevingne and actor Margot Robbie) leaving a trail of mass consumption in their wake. What’s more, when they decided to launch their business in LA in 2010 [where Tamie has been living for the past eight years], they made substantial inroads in the US market before even making it in Australia. Now, they’re stocked in David

From chic flats to kitten heels that come in three heights, Mara & Mine has also scored a spot in department store Bergdorf Goodman in the US. “The hard work is paying off,” Ingham says. “To be alongside the names we dreamt of wearing as little girls is a pinch-me moment for sure,” Stefanovic adds. Cara Delevingne’s decision to wear a pair of Mara & Mine’s Jem Skull slip-ons quickly made them a bestseller. “The Day of the Dead culture and the festival around it really made an impact and stood out to us,” says Ingham of the inspiration for the shoe. “We took the colours, skeletons and other cultural references and motifs and placed them into our collection. “I never thought the skeleton shoe would be the winner, but it is.” ●

Jones. A collaboration with an emerging Australian artist Emma Regolini put line drawings on their shoes – a move that’s certainly put a new spring in their step. The pair has since made their debut at Paris Fashion Week, creating a collection for fashion label Albus Lumen that gives French women a taste of what’s to come. “We met in Sydney straight after university via mutual friends and really hit it off,” says Ingham, who was working as a fashion stylist at the time, while Stefanovic was working as a model. Stefanovic made the move to Los Angeles but returned to Australia a few years ago to be closer to the man who is now her husband, Nine presenter Karl Stefanovic. “We always put friendship before business,” Stefanovic says. “That will never change and is the reason why it actually works. We have each other’s best interests at heart.”

Lose the excuses

S

o often I am talking with 28ers who are almost scared of what will happen due to their failed weight-loss attempts in the past. I have some very real, very tough conversations but these are the conversations where you really have the breakthroughs. Here is some advice I give them, before they start their journey, to give them the best chance of success and to avoid falling into self-sabotaging mind traps. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY \ The key to success when undergoing a transformation is an understanding of and – more importantly – an acceptance that the only person responsible is you. You need to stop playing the blame game. It’s not your partner, it’s not your family and it’s not your job. The person in charge of your success or failure

is you. I know this sounds harsh but when someone is about to begin their journey and they are already making excuses for why it might not work, they will inevitably fail. STOP JUSTIFYING IT \ “But there is no way I can

spend 28 minutes [4 per cent of your day] exercising … I ran this morning so I can eat whatever I want … I have a slow metabolism.” Trust me, I have heard it all. It is too easy in this world to justify things to ourselves and not take true accountability for our decisions. LOSE THE ALL-OR-NOTHING MENTALITY \ The best results I see in the long term are from those who are good to great most of the time. Anyone and everyone that attempts to be perfect eventually comes unstuck.

“Trust me, I have heard it all. It is too easy in this world to justify things to ourselves and not take accountability for our decisions.” This issue begins with the expectations we place on ourselves. Set a realistic goal with a realistic time frame that realistically fits in with your life, in a way where you can see progress week in and out, rather than an unrealistic goal where you are hanging by a thread daily. DON’T LET YOUR WEEKEND BE A WEAK END \

Too many of us eat and train like Olympic athletes Monday to Friday only to completely undo all of that good work over the weekend – binge eating, excess alcohol and telling ourselves we deserve it only to end up every single Monday back at step one.

ISTOCK

FEAR OF FAILURE \ This is probably the most

common reason people don’t achieve what they set out to. I tell my clients that if you don’t believe, you won’t achieve.

Getting in shape isn’t easy but it can be much simpler than we think. Identify the things that have held you back in the past and work out a plan or a strategy to overcome them so that you have real belief and real confidence that this time things will be different. Do not start your journey in a half-arsed manner until this is done. In my time as a personal trainer it wasn’t uncommon for me to have my initial sit-down with a new client, only to tell them to go away and work on some things, as they simply were not ready mentally or emotionally to get started. Although initially a little confused, and at times offended, when they did return there was 100 per cent success rate. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

EDUCATION & INNOVATION

Join the club

SHELFORD GIRL S’ GRAMMAR

This year, Shelford Girls’ Grammar started a book club for parents of VCE English students and parents and students are reaping the benefits.

W

hen Karen Payne’s daughter, Clancy Grant, began her final year of VCE English, Payne was keen to offer support in any way she could. So, when Clancy’s English teacher advertised that he was running a book club for VCE parents, Payne quickly enrolled. So far this year she has studied a range of books and plays, which has sparked some interesting debates and conversations between mother and daughter. “The book club discussions gave me a greater insight into the novels and plays and a better understanding of the types of questions and analysis that’s required from the students at VCE,” says Payne. “At primary school you can go in and help with reading groups and help out on different days but once children are at secondary school there are fewer opportunities to be involved. You can feel like a bit of a bystander by the time children get to VCE. “Through book club I think I’ve become a more useful sounding board for Clancy and we’ve been able to discuss the themes and symbols of the texts. I can talk to her about meanings and make connections and Clancy can bounce her ideas off me. She’ll ask me what I think about a certain character and we can talk about that. Without the book club I don’t think I could be as helpful.” The book club at Shelford Girls’ Grammar is the initiative of Joe Harlowe, Head of VCE English and EAL. The club is for the parents of year 12 students and it meets once a term as students begin a new text. So far parents have explored the intricacies of All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and the Women of Troy by Euripides. This term they are discovering The Crucible by Arthur Miller and Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. “There are probably relatively few subjects that parents can fully engage with once their children get to VCE – for example, I know I will never be able to help my daughter with VCE maths! But I felt that everyone could read the same book as their

K A R E N PAY N E & J O E H A R L OW E

daughter. English is a subject where you can step in as a parent and do something to help your child,” explains Harlowe. “Education isn’t something that just happens in the classroom – it happens at home, too. When students can talk about what they are learning with their parents that provides a deeper, richer learning experience.” Harlowe says the discussions between parents at book club highlight new ways of interpreting texts and characters. This builds a greater understanding of a text that parents can then share with their children. “With English, so much of the subject is thinking about how other people might see the same material in different ways. Experiences of a book can be very different,” he says.

“Any time you engage in conversation about a book, that opens you up to a different experience and understanding of the text. Often there are no cut and dried answers to questions, but parents find it valuable to share their perspectives and to have a starting point for conversations through what they take away from book club.” Karen Payne says her participation in the book club also reinforces to Clancy the value that Payne places on her education. “I think that educating a child is a partnership between the school, parents and the student, and book club is a way of showing Clancy that I value her learning,” she says. “Plus, I enjoy reading and teasing out the meaning of an author’s work, so we are both benefitting.” ● SARAH MARINOS

The Architects Choice

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,â€? Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is deďŹ nitely the best part of my job.â€? No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
