One of the funniest skits by the late comedian Robin Williams was one on golf; invented by the Scots to purposefully foul up a player, he says, so “you feel like you’re going to have a stroke”. Most of the routine I cannot repeat here, because in keeping with golf etiquette I must mind my manners, but anyone who felt the rapture and frustration that comes with a game of golf will understand. This edition celebrates the sport as we approach the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in December, with a cover story on the world’s most scenic courses – no stroke here, but it will take your breath away. ●

“ I am Greg Leach ” … deputy chief officer at the Metropolitan Fire Brigade I grew up on a sheep and wheat farm just west of Bendigo, and my dad was very active in the local fire brigade. In fact, he was the brigade captain for a period of time, and I used to help out on Sundays at the station. I joined as a junior member when I was 13 and went to my first fire when I was 16. I started off life as an apprentice motor mechanic at a Holden dealership. I did that for five years before I went to work for the Country Fire Authority (CFA) as a motor mechanic. One day I was servicing the car of the assistant chief officer in Bendigo and he said, “We’re recruiting for firefighters at the moment. Have you ever thought of joining?” I genuinely hadn’t, although I was a volunteer firefighter, but he really got me thinking. So, I applied, completed my recruit course, and worked for the CFA for 21 years. I left the CFA in 2007 and I joined Rural Ambulance Victoria. I stayed there until 2014, when I joined Melbourne’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB). I’m very cognisant of the MFB’s long and very proud history of 128 years of service to the people of Melbourne, and myself and my fellow senior leaders at the MFB have been guiding this historic organisation as we approach a period of transition to Fire Rescue Victoria in mid-2020. On an average day, I’m in the office between 7am and 7.30am and I get out of the office around 6pm. It’s a day packed full of meetings – some of them are just about running the business of the MFB, and taking part in strategic emergency management planning with our other partner agencies and with Emergency Management Victoria. Then, at any given time, you can get a major fire and I’ll be drawn into incident management. I think everyone who gets into management of a fire and rescue service still deep down likes the idea of jumping on a truck and going to a fire. I’m no different. My office is above the fire station and whenever the sirens go on, I sneak a look on our system to see where they’re going and what they’re dealing with. You never really lose that. In the coming months I am taking up the role of commissioner of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. I’m grateful to have had the privilege of serving the community of Melbourne and am looking forward to a new challenge. ●

COVER STORY
Par excellence At home and abroad are a collection of heavenly golf courses and resorts to add to your bucket list.
arts community is celebrated by metal sculptures and hand-blown glass at every tee box, with each hole named after a plant that’s indigenous to the area. The Jack Nicklausdesigned course is as difficult to play as it is stunning to behold.

nybody who has swung a club knows the truth in Mark Twain’s lament that golf is a good walk spoiled. Yet, there is generally compensation – even as you hack your way through the rough and from bunker to bunker, at least you can take solace in the view. How a golf course looks – its layout and design, and especially its surrounds – has long inspired golf architects. Not to mention given rise to those fantastical calendars of imaginary golf holes, where greens protrude from the water beneath Niagara Falls, perch on a plateau halfway up Mount Everest, or nestle on one of Port Campbell’s remaining apostles, accessed by flying fox or rickety rope bridge. For players of all abilities, heeding the cry of “you just have to play at …” has turned golf tourism into big business. If you’re thinking of packing the clubs and jetting off to golfing nirvana, here are a few of the world’s most scenic golf courses to whet your appetite. ●
Pebble Beach, US S PE R O N E G O L F C LU B
Sperone Golf Club, France Every year more than 20,000 golf nomads make a pilgrimage to Corsica to play at Sperone. They take in the art and culture of historical Bonifacio, dine on seafood plucked straight from the Mediterranean, and play a golf course to die for. The par 5 16th offers a snapshot: tee off from a headland on the southernmost tip of Corsica, and gaze out over the luxury yachts and surfers dotting the Bay of Piantarella, and further still to the “Millionaire’s Island” of Cavallo. Heavenly.
The Golf Club At Harbor Shores, US This delivers in spades as a visual golfing Disneyland, skipping through distinctly different terrains of dunes, woodland, wetlands and holes that border the Paw Paw River and Lake Michigan. Connection to the local
Hugging rugged coastline above Carmel Bay south of the Monterey Peninsula, Pebble Beach Golf Links is touted as the best public golf course in America. (The roughly $750 it costs to play puts a bold asterisk on “public”.) The Pacific Ocean backdrop provides the magic, making holes 6-10 arguably the most famous stretch in the world, while the 18th, snaking around the water, has been a fitting setting for the finale of six US Open championships. There are four Pebble Beach Resort courses in all, with on-course accommodation.
Hamilton Island, Australia A very Australian golfing experience awaits at our only 18-hole course that’s on its very own island. Ridges and steep valleys dominate this patch of Dent Island paradise, with spectacular views of the Whitsundays and a course to stimulate golfers of all levels. Mini-golf, a driving range and lunch in the stunning clubhouse complete the picture.

Old Head Golf Links, Ireland
LC LAMBRECHT
Choosing only one golf course to play in Ireland is like choosing a favourite child, although this Cork cracker makes a compelling case. Vertigo-sufferers be warned – perched on a clifftop 100 metres above the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll feel like you’re playing on the edge of the world. Old Head sits at the bottom of a teardrop of land just south of the food mecca of Kinsale, above rocks that now claim golf balls rather than stray ships.
It’s breathtaking, whether you’re perched on an elevated tee hitting to a green that seems to hang off the side of the cliff, or teeing off from a tiny island.
JACOB SJOMAN
Cape Wickham Links, Australia The visitors’ comments section on the Cape Wickham Links website includes a post from Californian brothers summing up their King Island golfing odyssey – “Q: Would you give up Cypress Point and Pebble Beach for the rest of your life to play only Cape Wickham? A: Yes.” Since opening four years ago (with Ocean Dunes added since), Cape Wickham has been wowing all who play it. Many pretend they’re golfing rock stars for a weekend, jetting in on charter flights from Moorabbin and Essendon.
Thracian Cliffs, Bulgaria Hailed as the Pebble Beach of Europe, this Gary Player-designed course has one up on its famous American cousin by offering views of the water (in this case the Black Sea) from every hole. It’s breathtaking, whether you’re perched on an elevated tee hitting to a green that seems to hang off the side of the cliff, or teeing off from a tiny island. Player is clearly biased, but says that in more than half a century of playing golf he didn’t believe such a setting existed.

ommon among the great performers on any stage is the panic they instil in us when their journey is almost done. Whether it’s Springsteen or Serena, we’ll queue around the block to witness their genius in the flesh one last time, fearing they’ll never pass this way again. The forthcoming summer of Australian golf offers much to tickle a fan’s fancy, not least the Vic Open at Barwon Heads in February, whose trailblazing mixed field format – where men and women compete for the same trophy and prize money – is being aped on the European Tour. But one name casts a shadow over all – Tiger Woods, who returns to Australia next month for the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne from December 9 to 15. For all the stars and storylines teeing up Down Under this summer, nothing comes close to Tiger. ●
Tiger Woods
Brooks Koepka
Nelly Korda
Ten years ago he flew home from Melbourne (after winning the Australian Masters) into one of sport’s greatest-ever scandals. His body has since fallen apart almost as spectacularly as his personal life, requiring multiple surgeries. Presidents Cup fans at Royal Melbourne will witness arguably the greatest sporting comeback ever.
Golf has evolved from pear-shaped men in baggy polo shirts to chiselled beasts with fitness regimes that seem better suited to Dustin Martin. Koepka is in the vanguard of these athlete-golfers hoping for a better outcome when hitting a small, stationary ball. Koepka will stride out among Woods’ Presidents Cup team as the current world No.1 player.
There was something novel and quirky about Petr Korda, the Czech with the buzzcut hair and scissorkick celebration, who lifted our national tennis trophy at Melbourne Park in 1998. Last year, it was the turn of his daughter, Nelly, in the Australian Open. She’s back to defend her title, limbering up for another leap, just like Dad.

By holding her nerve in Minnesota in June, Green became the first Australian to win an LPGA Tour major since Karrie Webb 13 years earlier. Webb was there as the 22-year-old sank the winning putt. The West Australian’s next mission? “To win on home soil,” Green says. She gets her chance at the Australian Open at Royal Adelaide in February.
Cameron Smith, the golfer, admits he might have followed Cameron Smith, the Melbourne Storm legend, down a rugby league path, only he didn’t want to get hurt. Smith made the right call, and heads to the Gold Coast in December aiming to become the first person in more than a century to win three consecutive Australian PGA Championships.
The fluffy hair poking out from his cap, and the awe as he accepted the 2009 Stonehaven Cup from his hero Greg Norman, are rings in the tree trunk of Scott’s fine career. Now 39, he is determined his 14th Australian Open tilt will bring a second success. He’ll have to work for it, as a stellar cast will tee up at the Australian Golf Club from December 5 to 8.
There’s no doubting the raw appeal of golf’s monster drivers. Champ is a 24-year-old whose numbers – for clubhead speed, ball speed, pure distance – are off the charts. Winning a second PGA Tour title in September showed his all-round game is growing. In December, he’ll make his Down Under debut in the Australian PGA at Royal Pines.

or Cornish College principal Nicola Forrest, having golf as part of the school’s curriculum is a perfect fit. Not only does the Bangholme college’s nine-hole course make novel use of some of its 40 hectares of natural parkland, the game itself is a teaching tool that keeps on giving. “Our curriculum is concept-driven, and you can think of so many concepts that relate to golf. Patience, respect, courtesy. The beauty of positioning anything around concepts is you can link them to your curriculum – you can say, ‘OK, where else can we talk about leadership, respect, care for the land, teamwork?’ Forrest says. “For us, golf provides another classroom to build a curriculum.” Forrest’s pride in “Cornish Links”, and the golf program it enables, runs deep, not least because it is a prime example of her boast that nothing at the school has come about through the efforts of only one person. Sean Kirschenberg had the initial idea – when his son, who is now in year 12, was attending the Early Learning Centre – and many have mucked in since to keep the little white balls rolling.
Grounds manager Tom Humphreys devotes countless hours to the upkeep of an asset that is also used for other sports including crosscountry running, is instrumental in learning about nature and the environment, and even hosts a billycart race down “Big Hill”. Chaplain Jarrod Davies drives the character-building aspect that underpins the program. “We’re not trying to produce great golfers, we’re trying to produce great people who play golf,” says Kirschenberg, a 20-year club professional who initially volunteered to run a clinic and has become the school’s head of golf. “It’s not about winning, it’s about nurturing them, challenging them, building resilience, and creating good people.” The longest hole is around 200 metres, the shortest 60, with synthetic greens but grass elsewhere – much of it donated, as was the irrigation system. A creek, bridges and seating complement a setting that families are encouraged to use on weekends. Native and fruit trees have been planted throughout; in summer, children tee off atop Big Hill and pick blackberries as they walk to their balls.
Cornish College’s youngest golfers (three-year-olds attending the ELC) use bespoke clubs and focus on fun, whether through throwing and catching games or just trying to hit their driver as far as they can. Lessons might finish with a ride on the motorised buggy. By year 10, the elective (taken by around 100 of the school’s 700 pupils) has a leadership focus; one assignment for this year’s students was choosing a figure and examining how they demonstrate leadership through golf. There’s work on technique, but also a strong focus on fitness of body and mind. Forrest helped Kirschenberg deliver the class for a term, and saw

children who were challenged by the game but then found resilience and grew through the experience. Before-school classes are often being delivered as she arrives at work, and the support she sees among the students warms her. “What’s special about this Cornish community is that you have young people out there learning the game and some are better than others, but they’re so supportive of each other,” she says. ● ● cornishcollege.vic.edu.au

rowing up in the English countryside, my passion for food commenced from a young age. I would watch my parents with fascination as they tended their kitchen garden and created family meals using the freshest seasonal produce with minimal intervention. A passion project of mine has been redesigning and cultivating the rooftop garden at QT Melbourne into an intimate, green space. Not only is the garden a selfsufficient produce source, but also can be transformed into a hidden gem for hosting a unique event. Every day, the team and I pick a selection of vegetables, herbs, flowers
and fruit from the garden to use in dishes on the Pascale Bar and Grill menu, as garnishes in handcrafted cocktails in the Rooftop bar, and woven into desserts. Adding pops of flavour to your food is all about using fresh herbs. And there’s no better way to add flavour to dishes (and also save yourself a bit of money) than with your own herb and vegetable garden. It’s not as hard, or as timeconsuming, as it sounds. All you need is a plan. Prepare \ Start by drawing out your

Think about positioning; plant near your entertaining and outdoor areas where their aromas and colours can be enjoyed, and you can be inspired. Tip: the right plants can also be used to provide privacy in the city. Space-savers \ Pots and containers are also key. If you don’t have the space, lots of herbs and vegetables grow well in containers. Single-use poly-boxes lined with a bin-bag and some small drainage holes are a great cost-effective DIY option. Growing herbs vertically in wall containers and planters is also a good move. Pots can also be shifted to suit the season, and move indoors in winter.

he dreaded “second novel syndrome” is something that haunts authors of wildly successful debut books. For Christian White, the challenge of building on the success of 2018’s The Nowhere Child was very real, but with The Wife and the Widow the Melbourne writer simply confirms his status as one of Australia’s most promising new storytellers. Set on a fictional island off the Bellarine Peninsula, the book interweaves the stories of Kate, a widow who learns about her husband’s elaborate secret life; and Abby, a long-time island resident whose life is turned upside-down as she grapples with mounting evidence that her husband is a killer. White expertly sets up both plot lines and leads the reader towards one of the most mind-blowing twists I have ever experienced in a novel.
16

The central question posed by the book is “How well do we know the people we love?”, with both Kate and Abby forced into uncertain and uncomfortable new worlds courtesy of the men they thought they knew all too well. The characters are all finely drawn. We first meet Abby living a contented island life in a ramshackle house, raising two teenagers and dabbling in taxidermy (“It was as messy as it was meditative”). Kate is enjoying a comfortable, middle-class life in Caulfield, until her husband’s disappearance destroys any sense of security she had.

The financial boost will help Hood, a geoscientist, continue her work exploring ancient reef systems across Australia, Canada and Namibia. Preserved in mountain ranges, the 700 million-year-old rock formations hold secrets about the missing history of the earth’s evolution. “The reefs I look at hold some very interesting information about the evolution of life during this strange period of time,” Hood says. “There was a massive climate change event, an environmental upheaval and at the same time we see a change from a world dominated by bacteria to animals. “We still don’t know how that happened ... So I am trying to find out how life evolved and how it’s related to the environment. “It’s a little bit like detective work

It’s complex work she hopes will lead to better drug development and hope for patients. “We all consist of cells, but if you dive a little bit deeper inside the cell it is made of molecules and support all the functions you think,” Glukhova says. “The Frizzled receptor is the kind of molecule that would sit on the outside of the cell and send a signal. What is particularly special is there are 10 types and they are incredibly important in embryo development.” She says it was in the development of the molecule in adults that could often result in a cancer diagnosis.

Sung, a clinician-researcher and pediatrician at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, is equally motivated in the quest for answers. Despite huge medical advances, hearing-impaired children still face significant challenges. Sung has been leading the research into helping infants affected by hearing loss reach their full potential. “We now have really early detection of hearing loss through universal hearing loss screenings, yet we still see some children with hearing loss are struggling more with language development and learning compared to normal-hearing peers,” Sung says. “My research focuses on finding these predictors so we can make these changes and help the children enjoy life to the full.” ● ● forwomeninscience.com.au

FASHION A special milestone in Megan Park’s journey.
M
elbourne independent fashion designer Megan Park celebrates a career milestone this year as her namesake brand turns 21. The idea to pursue fashion was born in the foothills of the Himalayas, and eventually saw her take on London Fashion Week in the late ’90s and score placement in prestigious department stores Harvey Nichols, Liberty and Barney’s in New York. Adored for her ready-to-wear collections, Park made a name for herself by combining Parisian chic, a love for Victorian beadwork and a hippie wanderlust to her designs – always pegging her aesthetic on

affordable luxury where artisanal brilliance is her secret weapon. “It’s been quite a journey,” says Park, who studied fashion design at RMIT and worked as a textile designer when she graduated. “Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like 21 years, as a lot has happened in that time. But I am really proud of what I’ve achieved and how far I have come.” In the ever-changing landscape of wholesale and retail fashion, Park has remained true to her roots. She works closely with artists in India and sings their praises on her website – putting faces to names and places. She’s honed her craft by finding a way to bring a laid-back spirit to resort luxe status. Her customers adore her intricate bead embellishments that offer an east-meets-west aspiration. She

designs her fabrics in-house – they’re hand-dyed and embroidered to perfection and there’s a romantic gypsy aesthetic that’s ever-so feminine too. “When I design, I think of what’s practical but stylish, it always has to be something I’d love to wear and that makes a woman feel great,” she says. “For me, it’s always been about combining structure with flow and airiness to the designs. But it’s really all about the fabrics and detail in prints, too. This is a journey, not just the final piece you purchase and clothes reflect that.” Park began working as a head designer for couture bridal designer Mariana Hardwick in Fitzroy after she graduated from RMIT. It’s here she acquired her skill and craftsmanship. The mentoring process served her well too.
also be steely in resolve and determination – a nice combination.” Park went on to work for the likes of Givenchy, Dries van Noten and Kenzo, creating textiles that those iconic brands would use in their collections. She launched her label in London, starting out making scarves and evening bags. Then came womenswear, accessories, a children’s range and now homewares. She returned to Australia in 2004 and hasn’t looked back. “I travel abroad quite regularly so I get to top up on my world travels all thanks to work,” she says. “But Melbourne is definitely home.” Park now lives in Fitzroy with her husband, architect Anthony Cox and their 12-year-old twins Ella and Marley.

To coincide with the 21st celebrations, Park has also written a book, telling her story from Melbourne to London and India. There have been many highlights over the years too, including the time supermodel Iman was spotted carrying a Megan Park bag and when Eurythmics front woman Annie Lennox wore her dress to sing for the Queen. In 2009, her classic fantail dress was seen on Claudia Schiffer and Queen Letizia of Spain. “I’ve never been one to chase endorsements, but when some of those you really respect choose your brand then it’s definitely a pinch-me moment,” says Park. “To think my bag was in Iman’s wardrobe in the presence of David Bowie is very cool indeed.” ● ● meganpark.com.au

Some of Melbourne’s most beautiful and best-preserved terrace houses line Canterbury Road. Strict heritage controls, and a genuine appreciation by owners of the history and graceful design, have seen them evolve gently through the decades with their ornate facades and many of the rooms preserved intact. The facade of this two-storey terrace is as beautiful now as it ever was, from the urns that adorn the heights of the pediment to the patterned brickwork and scallops of iron lace decorating both verandah levels. Leadlight and moulded timber make a welcoming entry. On the ground floor, the two front rooms are connected by double doors. Both have ornate fireplaces, deep skirting boards, cornices and ceiling roses. The bathroom and laundry follows and has a door to the sideway. Beyond here, the kitchen is partially concealed. Enter from the hallway and there is an opening about a metre wide over the bench and out to the dining area. The configuration allows for better than usual storage with banks of drawers and cupboards. The kitchen has Asko and Smeg appliances, stainless steel benches and marble-style splashbacks. Storage is something of a feature of this home and cupboards line one wall of the living area from the staircase to the rear wall. The living and dining area is a light and inviting space opening to a deck and very deep rear garden. Mature wisteria drapes lavishly over a pergola and the double garage opens to the rear lane. Upstairs, the main bedroom suite is at the rear of the

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
