Now that lockdown is over, I ought to visit the National Gallery of Victoria, throw a coin in its famous fountain and wish for luck. To beg a parent for a glittering coin to flick into the enormous pools at the front of the gallery, and then poke a finger in the Waterwall at the entrance, is a rite of passage for Victorian youngsters. NGV director Tony Ellwood experienced his own such milestone moment as a child visiting the gallery. In this week’s cover story, Ellwood shares his path from Gippsland to the Northern Territory and onto his beloved NGV, with journalist Sue Smethurst. ●

n empty Melbourne arcade has been transformed into the city’s first “artcade”, filled with new works by Australia’s leading contemporary artists to create a sophisticated public art gallery that visitors can shop in. From Rone to Reko Rennie, Lisa King and Caleb Walmlsey (aka Mayonaize), 250 Spencer Street’s West Side Place is a collaboration between street art network Juddy Roller and property developer Far East Consortium Australia, with art coming to the city centre in a bid to reacquaint us with our streets. The concept was developed long before the pandemic hit, and opened to the public on November 15, with plans to keep it open for at least six months. Judy Roller’s creative director Shaun Hossack, who runs an award-winning network of street artists from Fitzroy, says the developers gave him free artistic rein to tell a story. “The developer has a strong interest in the arts and wanted to turn these empty shops into an art experience; it was a perfect way to showcase some of Melbourne’s best,” Hossack says. Lisa King, one of Australia’s leading self-taught female graffiti mural artists, brings her own painterly stroke to the space via a pop-up cafe called Rose Twilight. “I wanted to make an interactive art cafe that is in part inspired by the NGV bookshop and conjures that feeling you get when you walk into the gallery,” King says. There are painterly flowers teamed with butterflies and skulls, with neon lights that read “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee” and “Art is Life”. “My art asks the question is the glass half-empty

Painting the town or full? The narrative is lightly political and designed to make people think – it’s mixing art and culture with my own work,” she says. She also collaborated with Coco Flip on the cafe’s lighting and neon signage by Electric Confetti from Melbourne for extra va-va-voom. Artist Rone, aka Tyrone Wright, creates an ode to his hugely popular Empire installation from 2019, taking over three window fronts in this arcade. “My work is like a grand version of the Myer Christmas windows,” Rone says of his Sub Rosa. He collaborated with interior stylist Carly Spooner to fill three rooms that shift from bedroom to fireplace area and lounge room. He managed to repurpose furniture and objects from Empire within the installation and purpose-built a fireplace for the occasion in lockdown.
A piece by Melbourne-based Kamilaroi artist Reko Rennie, above left; artist Rone’s mural Sleeping Beauty, above right.
There’s a huge mural of Sleeping Beauty that sits behind the scene. “Sleeping Beauty is a comment about where we are at the moment,” Rone says. “We’ve all been in hibernation and it’s like we’re all still waiting to wake up and come out again but don’t know when that will be.” Reko Rennie, a Kamilaroi artist based in Melbourne, acknowledges his Indigenous roots with his large sprawling work across a 225-square-metre hoarding wall. He worked with Adelaide’s emerging artist Shane Kookaburra, whom he is mentoring now. With the pandemic putting a stop to gallery exhibitions, Rennie used his time in lockdown to get involved in the public art project. “Part of my early art practices come from the street,” says Rennie, whose work riffs on an urban narrative and connects back to his ancestors, too. “I got into art through graffiti and, while I’m not a graffiti artist, I do like to work in a public environment at times. “The beauty of doing this sort of public format work is that it’s there for everyone to see no matter what your background is, no matter what you earn.” Hossack says the arcade was inspired by the street art of Hosier Lane and Melbourne’s other cobblestone laneways. “But unlike those laneways, we’re in this classy environment, with large imposing store windows and giving the public a high-end gallery experience,” Hossack says. “We wanted to take the ethos of street art and make it more sophisticated for all to enjoy.” ●

ain, hail or shine in Melbourne, shards of light have faithfully streamed through the famous stained-glass ceiling of the National Gallery of Victoria’s Great Hall, illuminating the vast space below for decades. But since July, there’s been no one lying on the Great Hall’s ruby carpet gazing to the heavens, no wide-eyed visitors lost in the kaleidoscope of colour that has transfixed us, and been a cultural rite of passage for Melburnians since 1968. “It was surreal being here without people,” says the NGV’s ebullient director Tony Ellwood AM, who on July 9 faced the grim task of turning out the lights and locking the gallery doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although a skeleton team remained on site to look after the $4.5 billion collection, for the first time the bustling corridors of the NGV fell eerily silent. “I’d go in and these big, beautiful spaces were empty,” Ellwood says. “The gallery felt like it had lost its purpose, it was such an odd feeling and a little sad because I knew how much enjoyment was being denied people.”

volume, the grandeur of everything,” he recalls. “These vast rooms with paintings bigger than the wall span of my house. I walked around gobsmacked; mouth open all day. I vividly remember Tiepolo’s Antony and Cleopatra. My mother took me to that painting and read me the story, and I remember looking up at it thinking it was the most beautiful thing in the world.” Painted in 1743, Giambattista Tiepolo’s The Banquet of Cleopatra was purchased by the NGV in 1933 from the Soviet government, where it had hung in the Hermitage Palace. Industry figures have conservatively estimated it to be worth more than $100 million and it has been lauded as the gallery’s most significant purchase ever. “Seeing things collected from places that obviously had such majesty was, for a country kid, quite unreal, astonishing really. I immediately felt this sense of otherworldliness,” Ellwood says. “I will never forget the look on my mother’s face as she was looking at the art, too, she was so transfixed and elevated by the beauty of the work and that made it magical for me too.
“They’d started looking at the Kimberley as an active collection region for a major exhibition,” Ellwood says. “So, the NGV began inviting me to Melbourne to talk about the artists and their works and what was happening in Indigenous art, which was incredibly intimidating.” Two years after he arrived in Kununurra, Ellwood and Mosby were packing their bags for Melbourne after he was offered a part-time role with the NGV. “My time in Kununurra was transformative. I’ve maintained a passion and commitment to Indigenous art and culture ever since. I’ve left Kununurra but it’s never left me and never will.” Ellwood quickly rose through the ranks of the art world. He was headhunted to the Bendigo Art Gallery, followed by the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. He accepted the NGV directorship in 2012, and under his ambitious stewardship the NGV has become the most visited gallery in Australia. He is passionate about ensuring the gallery is accessible to everyone and through blockbuster exhibitions such as the Terracotta Warriors, Dior and Valentino, Andy
“More so than ever, people are looking to their institutions to do something profound, to be caring and inclusive and welcoming and inspiring, and that’s everything we are.” TONY ELLWOOD As we chat, he is excitedly preparing to open the gallery’s doors again, putting the finishing touches to the highly anticipated Triennial 2020, which he believes will play a “critical” role in reinvigorating COVID-weary Melbourne. Years of planning and careful curation have gone into the coveted exhibition that will show the works of more than 100 artists from around the world. “More so than ever, people are looking to their institutions to do something profound, to be caring and inclusive and welcoming and inspiring, and that’s everything we are,” he says. “And, it’s everything I think the Triennial is.” Ellwood will never forget the first time he visited the NGV. It was the late 1970s and his mum Allison had boldly taken her 11-year-old twins Tony and Deane out of Warragul Primary School for the day, to see the Roman Masterpieces exhibition. Ellwood had no clue as the train rattled along from their country home just how profoundly lifechanging this adventure would be. “The first thing that struck me was the scale and
“I could see as a kid that these works were very special and I thought, ‘wow, this really is an incredible place and art is an incredible thing’. It was the best day of my life. And I knew this was where I wanted to work some day.” It was a long way from home and the NGV that Ellwood got the defining break of his art career. At 23, he was appointed Aboriginal art co-ordinator for Waringarri Aboriginal Arts in the remote east Kimberley town of Kununurra. It was a huge leap for the graduate who’d just completed an internship at London’s coveted Tate. At that time, Kununurra was little more than a dusty mining settlement, surrounded by vast cattle stations and the crocodile-filled Ord River. The nearest big town was Darwin, 10 hours’ drive away. Kununurra changed the course of his life. Personally, he met his partner Tom Mosby and, professionally, discovered a deep love of country and its artists. He became a trusted confidante to the likes of Rover Thomas and unwittingly came into the orbit of the NGV.
Warhol and Ai Weiwei has attracted a new and enthusiastic audience through the gallery’s doors. Behind the scenes during the pandemic, Ellwood and his team doubled down on their mission to ensure the gallery retains its global reputation, purchasing new works and planning “bold and ambitious” exhibitions to span the next three years. And after eight years at the helm, Ellwood shows no signs of slowing down. “I am as in love with the NGV today as I was when I first visited here all those years ago.” He is counting down the days until the highly anticipated Triennial launches, emphasising that the NGV has gone to great lengths to ensure the gallery is COVID-19 safe. “I don’t want people to think, ‘This is nice to read about but I don’t want to go there’. Come, visit us, enjoy. We’ve worked so hard to make sure this is a clean, healthy, accessible, comfortable and enjoyable experience.” ● THE NGV TRIENNIAL \ Opens December 19, 2020 and runs until April 18, 2021. ● ngv.vic.gov.au

Masterfully transformed by Nest Architects, this fourbedroom inner-city Victorian home has designer good looks and excellent family amenity. The lace-trimmed entry with tessellated tiles opens to an arched hallway and the original section of this peaceful home. In this section, high ceilings and period details such as ceiling roses and deep skirting boards bring the warmth of the era. The formal lounge and the dining room open off the central hall and both have marble fireplaces. Library shelving and a distinctive leadlight door make the lounge inviting. The next section of the home comprises a bedroom, a white and timber bathroom, and laundry. At the rear, the light and airy open-plan dining zone is spacious and stylish and looks out to the garden. The entertaining deck, at the back and the side of the house, has a servery from the kitchen. Beyond the deck, the inviting pool has glass fencing and a powder room.
