“These really are little miracles.” Melbourne Zoo director Michelle Bruggeman, the subject of this week’s cover feature, is referring to the birth of the zoo’s grassland earless dragons, but she could also be talking about the moments that families have experienced together at every visit over its 158-year history. It’s not just children’s eyes that light up when a butterfly comes to rest on their head, or they see an elephant getting its teeth brushed. Adults will more than ever come to appreciate the rejuvenating qualities of a walk through Melbourne Zoo, where conservation and reflection meet. ●

icture cruising down the highway on a Sunday afternoon and taking in the mountainous landscape of the Grampians. Leaving from Melbourne, the first stop in this region – a bit more than a two-hour drive north-west of the CBD – has to be wine country. Montara Wines in Ararat has gorgeous views, a very friendly cellar-door team and scrumptious platters to nibble on while you taste the vino. This would also be a beaut spot for a sundowner before heading to your accommodation. Such vast landscape and paintingesque views can get distracting but the BMW 3 Series 330i has got you covered. The Grampians has so much on offer that it’s at least a two-night stay for those wanting to soak it all up. Aquila Eco Lodges, in Dunkeld, is supremely located for both adventure lovers and foodies. You can really check out and switch off here. Each lodge feels secluded and peaceful plus you can feel the Australiana vibes with Skippy and his little mates hopping around the grounds. Breakfast is dropped off by the lovely owners each morning, and there are walking trails on the property for those looking to fully immerse themselves in nature. Even the laziest of us can enjoy the Grampians. Halls Gap is the central hub of the region and offers great places to eat and stay, on top of the natural beauty of its surroundings.

Before taking the 20-minute drive to breathtaking Reeds Lookout, pop into Harvest Cafe and grab a latte. From the lookout it is another 10 minutes to Mackenzie Falls. There is a wheelchair-accessible path to take in the view at the Bluff platform. Then head to Pomonal Estate winery for lunch – the share platter is a must, and be sure to try a takeaway squealer (a 950-millilitre bottle) of their house-made ginger beer. Back at the Eco Lodges is the award-winning Royal Mail Hotel by executive chef Robin Wickens, offering fine dining at Wickens and more casual eating at Parker Street Project. You cannot leave the Grampians without splashing out on a meal here – you will not regret it. ●

COVER STORY

A

t the height of the COVID-19-related lockdown, Melbourne Zoo’s director Michelle Bruggeman received an email that sent her spirits soaring. It was a screenshot taken by doctors at the neighbouring Royal Children’s Hospital showing some of their sickest kids with watermelon-wide smiles, beaming with delight watching Animals at Home, a unique online program the zoo created in response to the pandemic. From the comfort of their beds, the littlies were able to take a peek inside an otter’s den, soar across the tree tops while feeding giraffes and witness the newborn fluffy snow leopard cubs taking their first public steps. “That email was such a highlight for me,” Bruggeman enthuses. “They said it was a fantastic distraction for the kids which made me so proud, because it was everything we’d worked for.” Like the rest of Victoria, the pandemic put the much-loved zoo into lockdown too, closing its gates to the public for the first time in its 158 years. But, behind the scenes it was busier than ever. With 3400 animals to care for, it was essential that the team of 100 keepers and staff maintained their daily routines, albeit in COVID-19-safe logistical team bubbles. In addition, the zoo’s catering contractor transformed its kitchens into a quarantine catering facility, preparing 500 meals every day for nursing homes and aged-care facilities in crisis. The only thing missing from the regular hum and buzz was the adoring public who’ve flooded through the zoo’s gates every day since it was first opened in 1862. In an effort to maintain their community connection, the zoo’s staff created Animals at Home and began streaming the daily lives of the animals. It was an instant hit.

TALKING TO THE ANIMALS

Melbourne Zoo is open again and director Michelle Bruggeman says visitors will feel closer than ever to its natural wonders.

major changes over the past decade, transforming from what were once tourist-focused attractions to become cutting-edge centres of conservation, science and preservation where the four-legged and furry guests firmly come first. Melbourne Zoo is taking the lead. “We’ve successfully bred 16 grassland earless dragons last year,” she says. “The species was considered extinct in Victoria. Another nine hatched over the past few weeks. That’s the first time that’s happened in zoos for over 50 years. These really are little miracles.” The zoo is taking a lead role in rebuilding habitat for a variety of frogs affected by the bushfires. “Some people have a very archaic view of what zoos are, they see exhibits and ask if it’s right for animals, but what we are doing is protecting animals and fighting extinction – that’s our key role, it’s the core of our work and it’s what drives everything we do.

More than 1.5 million of us relished the rare chance to take a fly-on-the-wall look inside one of our most treasured institutions. “We wanted people to still enjoy the experience of visiting the zoo but from the safety of home,” Bruggeman says. “We know how vital the zoo is to community wellbeing, so we resolved that if people can’t come to the zoo, we’d find a way to bring the zoo to you. “All of those regular day-to-day jobs the public don’t normally see, like taking blood from tigers and weighing birds or teaching elephants how to stay still during an ultrasound, feeding seals, we were able to share online and the response was amazing. It gave everyone a new appreciation of just how skilled our staff are and how much goes on here behind the scenes, but also just how loved the zoo is.” It’s been just over 18 months since Bruggeman was appointed to the coveted position of director of the zoo, a role unlike any other executive job.

“ ... We know that reconnecting with nature and reconnecting with animals can have a huge benefit to our mental health.” Along with the task of transforming the ageing but much-loved institution, the mother of three has inherited an eclectic bunch of new workmates including a giant tortoise named Wilbur, who is believed to be more than 100 years old and something of a phenomenon at the zoo, and the adorable meerkats, whose enclosure is just outside her office. Their bobbing antics endlessly entertain staff and passers-by. The former YMCA executive who spent 20 years building a stellar career has been on a steep learning curve since she arrived, but now happily reels off information about ruffed lemurs and leopards and can wax lyrical about taxonomy and the challenges of mapping extinct species. She says zoos around the world have undergone

MICHELLE BRUGGEMAN, MELBOURNE ZOO

“The philosophy of a modern zoo is centred around conservation and that’s the message we want to get out to the public, we have a critical role to play educating people. “When a visitor comes to the zoo, we want them to connect with a species and understand why conservation is so important and what they can do about it at home, at grassroots levels such as reducing their use of plastics and palm oil.” The zoo’s Twilight program – back in 2022 – is the perfect example of how entertainment and education work hand-in-hand. It delivers more than $1 million into species protection every year. Bruggeman and her team have also been working on deepening the connection of the zoo as a place of wellbeing for the community and see the zoo

playing a vital role in the community’s postCOVID-19 recovery. “I think the zoo as a place of wellness is the heartbeat of what we are and what we do. People come to see and connect with the animals, but there’s as much in the way of beautiful gardens that you can immerse yourself in too,” she says. “It feels like you are going for a walk in the bush for an hour, you are completely away from the stresses of life and yet still in the middle of the city. “People feel better after being here, we know that, and after the year we’ve experienced, we know that reconnecting with nature and reconnecting with animals can have a huge benefit to our mental health. It is such a loved part of Melbourne and a vitally important place of recovery and resilience.” When news of the zoo’s reopening was announced, tickets were snapped up in minutes and on the first day zoo-lovers queued up waiting to get in, some with tears streaming down their cheeks as they flowed through the gates. The enthusiasm was matched by the animals, who were delighted to be welcoming back their human friends, too. “If you think about it, prior to this we’d only been closed for one morning in 158 years, so the animals are very used to having people around. Some of our species such as the orangutans and gorillas love human company, so the staff made a special point of extra visits to their enclosures during the lockdown, the giraffes and zebras, too. Needless to say, everyone is excited to be welcoming people back.” Over summer, the zoo will run a special Open Late program where patrons can enter the zoo from 4pm and experience the zoo in twilight to cater to the demand of the community wanting to reconnect. “It’s a great time of day to be in the zoo, the animals really come to life at sunset – they are animated, excited and it’s just a beautiful atmosphere to be here. We still have so much to learn from the animals. Every day I learn something new.” ● ● zoo.org.au

hinking about retirement living for themselves and their own family members drives Sam and Richard Buxton’s development and management of luxe Bayside retirement living. The first seed was sown when Richard couldn’t find what he wanted for his own parents. He built The Crescent, which has maintained a gold standard for luxury retirement living from its 2002 opening. Using the same philosophy, with experience refined over 20 years, Richard and daughter Sam opened The Granton at 233 New Street late last year. Designed to appeal to today’s retirees, The Granton is a boutique village near Brighton’s best amenities and offers luxury contemporary homes and optional tailored services. Sam Buxton is managing director of the Buxton Group’s retirement living management company One to Another. “We are a small family business with a personal approach to

everything we do,” she says. “We think about what we do as being from our family to yours, so we are One to Another. “We think about how we and our family members want to live as retirees to design and manage retirement living.” Keeping people independent is Buxton Group’s top priority. “The vast majority of our clients avoid using aged care,” Sam says. “We promote social connection and locate people close to the best amenities. “Then we tailor services to help people keep their independence; it can be as simple as providing cooked meals, housekeeping or other personal services.” The Buxtons’ formula worked to great advantage during recent coronavirus restrictions. “We are not aged care so our people were able to isolate in comfort and safety,” Sam says. “We were able to give them and their families peace of mind.” Prevention measures included screening, separate village staffing,

delivery of cooked meals and groceries and daily welfare checks. As restrictions ease, demand has rapidly picked up. Families realised during lockdown they weren’t able to support their parents as before, and are now seeking future security. While the Buxtons’ two retirement complexes share a management philosophy, they differ in style and communal spaces. At 95 Outer Crescent, The Crescent is classically styled, with 71 one and two-bedroom apartments over three levels, set in lush gardens. Its facilities include a bistro and dining room, gym, art studio, library, business centre, and wellness centre. On one of Brighton’s best sites near Church Street’s eateries and retail, The Granton at 233 New Street has 35 generously proportioned one, two and three-bedroom homes. Designed by Demaine Partnership and Sue Carr at Carr Design, The Granton offers the latest in contemporary understated elegance. The Granton’s interiors feature American oak flooring, detailed joinery, Caesarstone benchtops and Gaggenau appliances. All kitchens have a substantial island and an adjoining butler’s pantry and laundry; most homes include a study nook or separate study. Each home also has a private garden terrace. Communal spaces at The Granton include a bistro, bar, wellness centre, gym, cinema, lounge and outdoor living. The landscaped gardens were designed by Tract Consultants. Sam says both complexes offer the advantages of downsizing without compromise. “You can shed responsibilities, make life easier and do what you love in the quality of location and surroundings you are used to.” ● LIZ McLACHLAN ● onetoanother.com.au Sales inquiries: 1300 204 032
