Rhys Uhlich’s home in regional Victoria has substance and style. The shed house on Phillip Island which the model, fashion designer and film entrepreneur has built for his family, using recycled materials and for a staggeringly small budget of $100,000, should inspire a legion of aspiring home owners to believe they can do the same. This week’s cover feature explores Uhlich’s philosophies and the practicalities of creating a house with a luxe aesthetic – while being eco-friendly – at a low cost. It is an endeavour that is kind on the bank account and the environment, and the result is a triumph. ●

O

n any normal Saturday morning, little more than the odd Range Rover can be spotted ambling along Toorak’s prestigious Lansell Road. But once a month during the height of Victoria’s COVID-19-related lockdown, traffic jams formed along the leafy avenue as drivers patiently queued up for an order of scones. Yes, scones. The Country Women’s Association’s drive-through scone stall has been one of the unsung success stories of Melbourne’s pandemic crisis, with each freshly baked dozen offering a taste of community and connection we so desperately craved. And, with any luck, it might be a COVID-19 creation that’s here to stay. “We tried it the first time just with scones to see how it would go,” says CWA president Marion Dewar, “and we were stunned by how popular it was.” “People then started requesting things like quiches and sausage rolls, so we kept doing it. We couldn’t bake enough.” When the pandemic forced Victoria into lockdown, it effectively killed off a year’s worth of fundraising and friend-raising events that are the backbone of the CWA’s work, such as their cafe at the Royal Melbourne Show and the monthly high teas at Umina, the 1870s Toorak homestead that is their headquarters. It could’ve spelled the end for the organisation that has supported vulnerable women and children in every corner of the nation for 93 years. But instead, the CWA swung into action creating drive-through pop-up stalls offering scones, slices and delicious homemade treats, tapping into Victoria’s craving for comfort, companionship and the simple pleasures of being connected with the community, the very values the CWA is built on. “Pivot is a very over-used word at the moment,” Dewar laughs, “but that’s exactly what we did and it’s given us a new lease of life. In fact, we’ve grown, we’ve added new members and new branches because people can join what we do online. We’ve had more people respond to what we do than ever before which is really lovely.” Although the scones, sponge cakes and other such treats are a familiar and much-loved part of CWA folklore, they in fact play a vital role in supporting families affected by domestic violence and those needing social housing, while also giving a helping hand to communities hit by drought and bushfire. During the lockdown, Dewar signed off on $4.3 million worth of grants to drought-affected families and a further $300,000 to families hit by bushfire. “I think that’s what appeals to many of the women who join us.

CWA Victoria’s deputy president Pam Mawson, president Marion Dewar and treasurer Marie Vassallo.

“We are a place where everyone is valued and can contribute in some way and what we do makes a very real difference to the community.” In addition to baking for the pop-up stalls, teams of volunteers sewed face masks and scrubs that were delivered to nursing homes and hospitals all over Victoria, and created care packages of toiletries and necessities for women’s shelters and the homeless. “We even had some branches making and taking thank-you gifts to all of the shops in their country towns, just to acknowledge their efforts and say we are thinking of you.” To substitute the money raised from the sale of the 15,345 scones at last year’s Royal Melbourne Show, the ladies took their efforts online, creating a Scone Challenge and sold a staggering 11,000 scones to friends, family and neighbours. “We are more than just scones,” Dewar laughs. “But scones have brought us a lot of money over the years and I think the Scone Challenge might be one COVID-19 initiative we’ll keep.” Although the much-loved Christmas Fair at Umina can’t take place this year, cars will be lined up along Lansell Road for one last tinsel-topped treat before Santa arrives. Move over Maccas, it’s drive-through Christmas cake, shortbread and plum pudding. Once the last of the mince pies are sold, Dewar will head home to South Gippsland. She’s been bunkered down at Umina steering this wonderful ark of energetic women since the lockdown began. “It’s been an extraordinary year and it will be lovely getting home,” she says. “I think COVID-19 has perhaps tapped something within us all that we didn’t know we had.” ●

Shedding the cost COVER STORY Model and filmmaker

Rhys Uhlich has created his family’s dream home on Phillip Island for $100,000.

A

fter living in the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles for two years with his wife and two children, Australian model, fashion designer and filmmaker Rhys Uhlich knew it was time to come home to a simpler, quieter life. Growing up not far from the surf of Phillip Island, Uhlich – who first came to prominence in 2008 as the winner of the Jennifer Hawkins-hosted reality show Make Me A Supermodel – longed to bring his family back to the beach. He planned to build his dream home – not a multimillion-dollar mansion, but a shed-style house – with a very tight budget of $100,000. His wife Claire and their daughters, 10-year-old Indah and six-year-old Mahli, would be there every step of the way during this do-it-yourself, homebuilding experiment. Uhlich’s shed home is an affordable haven in these tough economic times. It has also been built to be sustainable. Before moving to the US the couple bought the block of land in the Phillip Island suburb of Silverleaves as a back-up plan for their return from chasing the LA dream. “Living in America isn’t cheap, so when we came home we had a certain amount of money left. We thought, what should we do with what we have left?” Uhlich says. “We wanted to try and avoid being a slave to the mortgage system as much as possible and have the freedom to live the life we want.

6

“This is about breaking down those perceptions and showing that if you want to build a home, you can potentially afford it.” RHYS UHLICH

“That is where the idea was born out of. I’ve always loved the idea of barns and sheds and thought it would be a fun and liberating place to live in. “We had the block of land but no shed, but I think a lot of modern architecture is built around shed and barn design, so basically I went straight to the source and found a shed company.” After getting council approval to build in May, Uhlich started to work. The home is 120 square metres and has three bedrooms in two lofts, and a huge open-plan living space. The black Colorbond steel shed was bought from West Gippsland Sheds and Uhlich engaged local Phillip Island company Studio Blakemore to design the interior. Caple Builders helped with the construction. “You have to be very adaptable,” he says. “I wanted to go with a regular shed build, but the trick was to choose the right colours and the right windows to make it look less like a shed and more like architectural build. “All I did was pay for the engineering and get it up to a residential standard. “It was also important for me that whatever steel we didn’t use in the build, we would re-use it somewhere else.” Uhlich had also spent a lot of time living in Bali, watching how the local Balinese community are so resourceful in how they build their homes. With this in mind, he made sure that most of the

furnishings in the home come from recycled, unused building materials. “Every window and door in the place I got off Facebook marketplace,” he says. “I drove halfway around Victoria picking up all these discarded windows with double-glazed timber, and you would be surprised how much is out there from new builds that don’t get used and are left over. “I designed the whole build from what I found. “I also have got friends in the building industry so I said to them, anytime you pull down an old house and there is leftover hard wood, drop it off. “I will make a lot of furniture out of that. “For example, using recycled pallets to make our kitchen. It all sounds very rustic but I am going for a finish that is quite aesthetically pleasing, but it’s all about how you do it.” Uhlich wanted to build something that wasn’t going to cost a fortune, a difficult task when looking at the options available. “For me I didn’t have at least $400,000 for the build so I wanted to explore this option,” he said. “There is a market for a $100,000 to $150,000 build but I couldn’t find one. “This is about breaking down those perceptions and showing that if you want to build a home, you can potentially afford it.” Uhlich wants this unique home to be something the family live in for a long time, and be proud of. “I think of the homes I went into as a kid, the ones that were built by a family have a story to tell,” he says. “That is something that really stuck with me. “I wanted our home to have a soul. “We were really close to going down the normal building route but I’ve always thought I didn’t want to regret anything, so I’m glad we went down this route. “My kids are enjoying it too, we want to make this a fun house.” Since his reality show days, Uhlich has run his own fashion label Tevita and now broadcast production and content company Tevita Film, which has offices in Los Angeles and Phillip Island. Right now Uhlich is throwing all he has at making a home which is everything his family has dreamed of. ●

ust two-and-a-half hours north-east of Hobart, along the twists and turns of the Great Eastern Drive, lies an idyllic getaway that will put every visitor at one with nature. Freycinet Lodge, nestled in Freycinet National Park, is one of many jewels of Tasmania’s east coast. The area is home to destinations such as Wineglass Bay and Honeymoon Bay, and Freycinet Lodge overlooks Great Oyster Bay and The Hazards mountain range.

Stay Freycinet Lodge’s design-driven accommodation, including eco-friendly cabins and water or tree-view pavilions, cater for a variety of travellers and occasions, whether it be a romantic getaway, a family break or some much-needed R&R. The newly designed Coastal Pavilions bridge the gap between nature and comfort. As you step into a pavilion’s pod-like design, you’ll be immediately immersed in the surrounding wilderness. The pavilions’ design was completed by Hobartbased Liminal Studio and has won several accolades for its brilliance. “The Coastal Pavilions provide indulgences through simple pleasures rather than grandiose gestures. They take their cue from the fluidity, layering and interplay of the coastal bays,” Liminal Studio architect and co-founding director Peta Heffernan says. “We hope that guests are uplifted by the way the architecture supports and enhances their experience. We are very conscious of creating environments that enable the user to connect with place and enjoy out-of-the-ordinary experiences.”

Fascinating Freycinet Eat Freycinet Lodge offers many options, including exquisite fine-dining at The Bay Restaurant. Head chef Roy Lin has carefully curated a menu to entice all the senses. Consistently rated as one of the east coast’s best restaurants, it offers outstanding seafood such as freshly shucked oysters by local Melshell Oysters, seared Tasmanian scallops or the fish of the day, which is caught locally.

ALASTAIR BETT

Explore Honeymoon Bay is a short walk from the lodge and has stunning views of the sapphire-coloured water and The Hazards mountains. The aptly named beach is the perfect spot for a romantic picnic. A little farther on is the beginning of the famous Wineglass Bay lookout track, a must-see for anyone visiting the area. This track will take you between one-and-a-half to two hours to reach the lookout

point and return. The lookout gives you panoramic views of Wineglass Bay, one of the world’s most famously picturesque beaches.

Experience Should nature walks and beach hikes not appeal, there are plenty of other attractions in the area. A visit to Devil’s Corner Cellar Door is a 30-minute drive away and features some of Australia’s most recognised red and white wine varietals. Tuck in with a glass of the awarded Devil’s Corner pinot noir and a woodfired pizza as you enjoy the views of the vineyard and beyond. ● For updates and more details on Freycinet Lodge’s COVID-response, restaurant opening times, safety standards and Tasmanian Health Service information, visit the lodge’s website. ● freycinetlodge.com.au

FEATURE HOUSE SOUTH YARRA \ 6 AVOCA STREET 4

Waterloo, one of South Yarra’s most distinctive and beautiful homes, was built in 1890 by Captain John Forrest who gave his name to the Forrest Hill precinct near Melbourne High School. It is the largest and most elaborate of the homes in Lee Terrace, a gorgeous strip of tall white terraces trimmed with black lace in tree-lined Avoca Street. It is reminiscent of the romantic, flamboyant homes of New Orleans’ French quarter. Inside, rich Victorian detail and the solid craftsmanship characteristic of the era are complemented by high-end contemporary fittings. The home is built over three levels with the main floor – the first – reached by an external iron staircase. Here, the living and dining area is a sweeping expanse with a marble fireplace, the lovely corner bay window with its fluted masonry, and a knockout kitchen with stainless steel bench tops, Smeg and Miele appliances and excellent storage. Also on this level are another living room, a fitted study and, at the rear, a timber deck and plunge pool. On the lower level, with a separate entrance, a sitting room has double doors to a bedroom with built-in wardrobe. A laundry, bathroom, storeroom and a boot room/glass house are also down here and there is a small courtyard. The garage is rare and welcome in South Yarra and there is also a carport. On the top floor, the luxurious vibe is very strong. The main bedroom, 6.2 by 6.7 metres, has a marble fireplace and access to the balcony. The marble-trimmed en suite has a soaker bath, oversize shower and dual basins and there is a dressing room. Two additional bedrooms share a family
