The overture starts, the house lights go down and there’s an anticipation for what’s to come – the theatre is part of Melbourne’s lifeblood. When lockdown began last year, actors, producers and a host of others were left out of work indefinitely. But theatre is back, and masked-up audiences couldn’t be happier. In our cover story this week, we talk to some of the cast of the first production back on the calendar, Come from Away, along with others in the biz. The stories of innovation and love of their craft confirm the old adage – there’s truly no business like show business. ●

COVER STORY Hit musical Come from Away kicks off Melbourne’s theatre season after a nearly year-long hiatus.

L

ast March, when the musical Come from Away had its final performance before lockdown, actress Sarah Morrison had a strange feeling on stage. Public places were beginning to shut down around Melbourne in the wake of the pandemic, and theatres were some of the first to close their doors. Come from Away’s season was cut short by a week, but there was no sense of how long that would last. “I thought, ‘It will blow over, it won’t be so long’, but I remember taking my bow that night and bursting into tears,” Morrison says. “Maybe that was the intuitive part of me [communicating] the gravity of what was happening.” It would be the last time she’d appear on stage before an audience for almost a year, during which she felt “incredibly disheartened”. With the production now open again at The Comedy Theatre for an encore season, Morrison expected to feel relieved. What she hadn’t bargained for was how relevant the story of Come from Away would suddenly be. Set immediately after the September 11 terror attacks, it tells the true tale of the passengers whose aircraft was suddenly re-routed to the small Canadian town of Gander, and the outpouring of support they would receive from the townspeople who greeted them. “The message of this story has so many parallels to what’s happened, if you look at what we all did in Melbourne to keep each other safe. We put each other’s needs first,” Morrison says. She thinks that even audiences who’ve seen it before will “come with some fresh eyes and connect to it in a different way”. In preview nights, that was evident: “The energy at the beginning of the show was palpable; through their applause, you could feel the audience’s readiness to be a part of something altogether.” Not only is Melbourne theatre back, but the industry has responded in a collectively creative way

that spells a triumphant and meaningful return. When the doors of the Malthouse Theatre closed last year, artistic director Matthew Lutton says, “it felt like an existential crisis”. “A theatre company’s sole purpose is to create live shows and performances, so not being able to do that almost removes its entire meaning.” Soon, however, the crisis gave way to creativity. “The disruption that occurred was so massive that ideas we’d had and dreams we hadn’t been able to do suddenly became possible,” Lutton says. “We always wanted a stage outside, and also thought that it would be wonderful if one day we could do a massive, immersive show for people in Melbourne. [The pandemic] opened up those opportunities because we couldn’t return to the old system.”

T

urns out they managed to implement both: Malthouse’s new performance hub, located in their courtyard, offers a fairly pandemic-proof setting, with cabaret style seating and a line-up that already includes ARIAwinning Kaiit, Eddie Perfect, Judith Lucy and Denise Scott. As for the immersive show? Because the Night will take place in a purpose-built maze of more than 30 rooms, where audience members will be masked and moved through scenes set in the 1980s. Lutton says the set-up “allows us to cope with changing audience numbers, where the audience doesn’t have to be seated”. Over at the Melbourne Theatre Company, associate director Petra Kalive is also busy testing out new ideas. The theatre has dealt with the challenges of COVID-19 by taking out the middle and centre aisles to further separate the audience, and is also looking at staggered entrances. There are advantages to the new layout, she says, in that “potentially, it feels like a much more exclusive experience if there aren’t as many people in the audience … it’s like a new form of theatre is emerging”.

One of the biggest theatrical productions for 2021 will be Moulin Rouge at the Regent Theatre. Once scheduled to open in five productions globally by year’s end, Melbourne will now be the only one in the world, and the first after Broadway. “That’s pretty unusual for Australian audiences to see,” says its producer, Carmen Pavlovic. Through shutdown, “we had to keep all our balls in the air – we had the set designer and technical director doing theatre surveys by Zoom!” But lockdown never dampened her enthusiasm for the project. “I think Moulin Rouge’s moment is now – a highly stylish, big spectacle with recognisable songs,” she says. “There’s a revolutionary feel in the air, and Moulin Rouge’s story is that, too,” she says. “It’s [set in] the world of music and fashion and art, and I thought it would feel very much at home in Melbourne, and particularly at the Regent Theatre.” Right now, it’s Come from Away that is taking centre stage, and American cast member Kolby Kindle feels grateful to be a part of it, and the wider community. “My hat’s off to all the Melburnians; it’s really admiration at seeing how hard everyone worked and came together,” he says, adding: “Melbourne has set an example for the rest of the world, especially when it comes to the arts, and I feel like a lot of eyes are on Melbourne to see how they managed to do that and get a show back on its feet.” For Zoe Gertz, who plays pilot Beverley in Come from Away, “Melbourne audiences should see themselves in this show, in terms of the acts of kindness and the selflessness. This is part of the payoff for the hard time that everyone has endured ... and for all of us on stage, the way we’re approaching the story has completely changed because of the events of last year. It feels very special.” ● COME FROM AWAY \ Runs at the Comedy Theatre until March 21 ● comefromaway.com.au

iving in a beautifully designed, well-equipped home has greater importance than ever with more people working, relaxing and socialising at home. This heightened focus on living well is driving buyers to The International Brighton, says CBRE senior director Chad Arbid. The International’s high-end kitchens, spacious and flexible layouts, bay and city views, landscaped outdoor spaces, dedicated concierge and an elite bayside neighbourhood are all strong attractions for buyers, he says. “Home is now the centre of our lives and buyers want far more than just a place to rest and retreat.” Buyers have their last opportunity to inspect The International’s $1.5 million display; it closes at the end of next week for the start of construction. The International’s house-sized two and threebedroom residences are designed by leading architect Sue Carr. Water and/or city views are available and luxe shared spaces and amenities will extend living, work and leisure beyond residents’ front doors. ● LIZ McLACHLAN

DOM A IN REV IEW

CAROLINE McCREDIE

D

esign enthusiast, comedian and presenter Tim Ross wants you to know that good architecture can keep a conversation buoyant for hours; and it’s one he’s happy to get started. His new ABC TV documentary Designing a Legacy focuses on mid-century Australian architecture and explores why our retro past is so significant. From iconic modernist architects like Melbourneborn Robin Boyd and Esmond Dorney to Queenslander Gabriel Poole and Sydneysider John Andrews, Ross takes us on a journey that’s far from obvious. He reaches out to the architects’ families to see how these homes shaped their lives and why they’re still sentimental all these decades on. Designing a Legacy explores beyond the bricks and mortar exteriors of these iconic homes to find

I felt privileged to see inside the homes and have the

the deeply personal stories that helped build them. Ross’s own interest in modernist architecture stems back to his childhood after discovering a Robin Boyd-designed home on the Mornington Peninsula. “I remember being in the car with Dad as a kid on the Nepean Highway in Frankston and seeing the McClune House [built in 1969] a thousand times before realising it was built by a legend,” he says. “It had an open day around 15 years ago, and Dad and I took a walk inside. To see it was a wonderful experience. It really planted the seed to know more, explore more and to do the sort of storytelling I do.” It’s Ross’s passion for architecture and design that makes watching a documentary about it feel even

families speak so candidly about the memories made there.

more personable. He’s less about the technicality and more about what modernist architecture adds to our lives. “Robin wanted to remind us that better architecture is better for all of us,” he says of Boyd. His interviewees have become friends; it’s one of the perks of deep-diving into the past. “They’re really personal stories where I’m trusted to tell their family story,” he says. “I felt privileged to see inside the homes and have the families speak so candidly about the memories made there.” While Ross’s mission is to demystify architecture by making it about people, including the story behind the McCraith House in Dromana [also known as the Butterfly House], he clings to nostalgia as much as he asks the bigger question of why it matters. Ross travels from Queensland to Tasmania to find out what makes our architecture uniquely Australian, and why modernist homes, in particular,

have become highly sought-after in recent years. “Six years ago there were few real estate agents who understood the mid-century era, and now they seem to get it,” Ross says. “They understand that value of it and these homes are in huge demand. I have had many ask me to put up images on Instagram to see if there’s interest in a home from that era, and I am amazed by how much passion there is for it out there today.” His live show Man About the House sees Ross performing a mixture of comedy and storytelling in architecturally significant buildings and homes while his musical partner Kit Warhurst provides the soundtrack to his musings. The shows have consistently sold out and there are plans for more to come this year. ● DESIGNING A LEGACY \ Available for streaming on ABC iView.

FEATURE HOUSE BRIGHTON \ 26 SYEMOUR GROVE 4

The design of this Brighton home, built by award-winning company Atkinson Pontifex, is reminiscent of the grand colonial bungalows found in balmy climates. Palm trees in the front garden, a wooden verandah with stone pillars and wooden shingles, and plantation shutters all enhance this romantic idea. Inside, spacious rooms, high ceilings, blackbutt floors, and tongue and groove dado panelling contribute to the homely grandeur. The main bedroom suite is at the front of the house and has a bay window with a bench seat, his and hers walk-in wardrobes and an en suite with double shower. Opposite the bedroom, the living room has an open fireplace and bench seat in the bay window. Also off the central hall are an office, a second bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with bath and shower, the laundry, two more bedrooms and the family bathroom. The living, dining and kitchen area spreads across the rear of the house and is a spacious, bright area with a stone fireplace, bespoke cabinetry and a panelled ceiling. The white kitchen has a Rosieres Paul Bocuse cooker, excellent storage and an island bench with storage and casual dining section. A servery opens from the kitchen to the outdoor kitchen on the entertaining deck. The stone pillars on the front verandah are repeated here and this area looks out to the large pool with a travertine surround. At basement level, there is a theatre, fitted cellar, pool room and gym as well as space for several cars, storage and
