Over the past year, many of us have learnt about the joys – and, of course, trials – of working in close quarters with our significant others. But what if you not only worked in the same space as your partner, but on opposing teams – your goal to win and have them lose in the process? That’s the reality for our cover stars AFLW players Brianna Davey and Tilly Lucas-Rodd. They both started their professional footy careers at Carlton, but have since switched to Collingwood and St Kilda respectively, and say though their work makes them rivals, their home life is more than harmonious. ●

COVER STORY
Rivals on the field, AFLW players Brianna Davey and Tilly Lucas-Rodd share their life as a couple.
B
rianna Davey and Tilly Lucas-Rodd are partners in life and opponents on the football field. And it’s the game they love that brought the Collingwood co-captain and St Kilda defender together. A former professional soccer player, Davey, 26, represented the Matildas in 17 international matches before crossing codes to be part of the AFLW competition, which kicked off in 2017. She plied her trade at the local level with St Kilda Sharks, where she met Lucas-Rodd, 24, who’d played Aussie Rules since she was four. They’ve been in a relationship now for five and a half years and live together in Coburg with dog Bonnie – who is impartial amid a tug-of-war for her football loyalties. She hasn’t been signed up to a Magpies pet membership or wrapped in a Saints scarf, instead the chocolate Labrador barracks for the Western Bulldogs. “Being a dog, she goes for the Dogs,’’ Lucas-Rodd laughs. The couple were teammates at Carlton for three seasons until 2020, when Davey became the first Blues captain to cross to arch-nemesis Collingwood and Lucas-Rodd moved to the Saints for their inaugural campaign. For the first time in AFLW, they took to the field against each other on March 20 when the Magpies and Saints faced off in round eight at Victoria Park. When Domain Review caught up with the couple ahead of the fixture, Lucas-Rodd joked about engaging in some cheeky-on-field ribbing. “There could be some sledging. You never do the dishes! Clean up the dog poo! “We’ve played against each other once, and that was in VFLW. We were only near each other at two contests, but I know Bri’s teammates, tongue in cheek, called her soft because she didn’t go hard enough at me. It was probably because I was too quick and got away.” Davey was captain during their time at the Blues, so many football conversations were off-limits as Lucas-Rodd was both her teammate and partner. Now, playing for rival clubs, tactics and inner sanctum talk at home is still out of bounds. “It’s just being professional and having that boundary, and I thought we did it pretty well when we were in the same team at Carlton because there were different challenges,’’ Davey explains.

“Being in separate teams now has thrown a different spanner in the works. We still definitely talk about footy, but more about the other teams and the competition as a whole. We don’t discuss our teams and goings-on specifically.” Lucas-Rodd adds: “The main thing is just keeping our team’s tactics and things away from each other. You normally want to debrief with your partner, your closest person, about things that go on, and footy is the main thing we have going on.” Contrasting training schedules means the pair don’t see a lot of each other during the week in the thick of the season. Both are in their final year of teaching degrees at Victoria University, and LucasRodd works part-time as a teacher’s aide at the Sydney Road Community School in Brunswick, while Davey is about to start work with Collingwood Football Club in a community role. “We definitely see each other less during footy,” Davey says. “Tilly is working and studying, and she’d
“I personally hate missing Tilly’s games because I’m always thinking about what she’s doing and how she’s going. I was training one night, and Tilly was playing. I got my phone out straight away and got into the pool for recovery and was holding my phone up out of the water watching her play.” Lucas-Rodd jumps in: “I had your game on in the medical room before a game once, and the girls were gathered around watching and commenting on what you were doing.” Davey has etched her way into footy folklore, making history as the only person to captain both Carlton and Collingwood. “It’s kind of not surprising (I’m the first) given Carlton and Collingwood are arch-rivals, but it’s cool at the same time. It’s a huge jump, rival club to rival club,” she says. “I absolutely loved my time at Carlton; I have some great memories there, I played in a grand final in 2019, captained Carlton in that grand final, but I’m at Collingwood now. I’m loving it, and I feel very Collingwood now I’m here. “I was terrified about making the move, but anytime I’ve made a change in my career and pushed myself out of my comfort zone, it’s made me

main thing we have going on.” TILLY LUCAS-RODD train Monday, Tuesday and Thursday night, and at Collingwood, we’d train Monday, Wednesday and Friday, then on the weekend we have our games.’’ Lucas-Rodd says, “Speaking to other girls, who also have partners who play AFLW, they really make an effort to go and watch each other’s games, but we’re probably more brutal. “In round one, I didn’t go to Bri’s game because I was playing the next night and I was like, ‘No, I need to prepare,’ and recently Bri didn’t come to my game because she wanted to prepare for hers. “We’ll definitely watch each other play on TV or re-watch the game together.” When Lucas-Rodd is playing, she’s always in Davey’s thoughts.

better. It was the same when I played professional soccer; it made me a better athlete and person.” Lucas-Rodd was a huge support for Davey when she received the approach from Collingwood and during her decision-making process. “It’s not something you want to influence; I wanted to remain quite balanced. We discussed the good things and the negative things knowing family and other friends who knew who might try to pull Bri one way,’’ she explains. “It had to be Bri’s decision because she’s the one who had to play there and live with her decision.” ● THE 2021 AFLW SEASON \ Runs until March 28, with the grand final on the weekend of April 17.

LIZZY HOO \ HOO DIS?
About time we had a laugh Feel-good funnies at the Melbourne Comedy Festival
A
fter the Melbourne International Comedy Festival was cancelled last year, local audiences have been gagging for gags, so to speak. With a plethora of shows on offer, how can you narrow it down? Here are some worth booking.
Describing his show as “a rant to my friends who want me to get a mortgage and get married and have kids and play by the rules”, Valvo’s ultimate goal was “to be more joyful”. “In comedy, misplaced anger is [usually] the sweet spot. After last year, who wants to hear a comic banging on about everyday life? It’s chaos at the moment.” Something he plans to talk about? “I’m thinking one of the lessons we learned last year is what retirement is going to feel like. I got hooked on true crime with nothing else left to do; now we’re all solving crimes at the family table.” GERALDINE HICKEY \ WHAT A SURPRISE
Although her show hinges on the premise of her turning 40, Hickey calls it “a good news show, about how I really appreciate and value my life”. Her earlier comedy might have had
Even though his work on The Project and How to Stay Married kept him busy, Helliar says the comedy industry’s collective suffering has resulted in a special vibe this year for both performers and audiences. “Sometimes when you get something taken away, it’s a reality check as to what it means to you.” He describes elements of his show – which also deals with being married and raising kids – as “a call for everybody to use their own sense of decency. It isn’t preachy, but I think we need to rebrand a lot of things like [whether you’re] left or right and political correctness. “I notice the ambushing of people through political correctness or ‘cancel culture’; we need to start treating people like human beings again.”

KIT RICHARDS \ SCANDAL! A REFLECTION ON ESSENDON’S DOPING SAGA: THE MUSICAL?
The title says it all, but Richards adds that “it’s a one woman show with a live band; a pub rock musical about the Essendon doping scandal from a die-hard fan”. She hopes audiences will see it’s wider than football. “It’s about growing up and realising your heroes have flaws.” The musical theatre fan wants it to be “like watching friends muck about onstage and laugh”.

more whinges, but these days “I’m all out of tragedy, so I had to wonder: how do I make the good stuff funny?” She has much to be grateful for, with a wedding to her partner on the horizon, and she’ll throw in some travel stories for good measure. “I want people to leave with a good feeling. I want them, without quite knowing why, to have a spring in their step.”
PETER HELLIAR \ LOOPY
Hoo, who once centred a lot of her material on her dating life, is now in a relationship. “I’m 37, so I’m approaching my fertility use-by date, and so I talk about that. I also look back on my own childhood, wondering if it was better back then. We didn’t have climate anxiety, we didn’t have sniffer dogs at music festivals and you could do whatever you wanted. “My mum would drop me off at the pool all day, and then she’d just return when she was ready. When I was a kid, I used to sit on the train and do nothing and be completely fine; now, I have 10 apps open and am reading all the news. Was it better then, or not really?” ●

STREETS OF OUR TOWN
Lygon Street Find cool bars and friendly locals at the Brunswick East end of the famed street.
This stretch of Lygon Street is a gastronome’s delight. Like a condensed selection of all of the celebrated cuisines Melbourne’s northern suburbs have to offer, the top end of Lygon Street boasts some of the best pizza in the world, mouth-watering Middle Eastern, Texan barbecue, burgers and a smattering of wine spots perfect for a spontaneous weekend bar hop. The northern end of Lygon Street in Brunswick East – the reserved cousin of Brunswick proper – has, since the late 1800s, been home to an array of small shops, greengrocers, pastry cooks and manufacturers. With the exodus of larger textile manufacturers in the 1970s came a more vibrant shopping precinct, and cafes and bars popped up to make it the exciting,

WHAT WILL YOU FIND THERE?
As I meander south from Glenlyon Road, I am lured into Sugardough Panificio and Patisserie’s glassy shopfront by luxurious looking pastries filling its windows. The quaint and quirky cafe is busy, its walls boasting framed newspaper and magazine reviews – one of which tells me I need to buy a sweet treat – on Matt Preston’s orders. Kevin Nguyen, who has run the bakery with his mother for the past five years, says he loves the homey feel of the place – and the customers do too. “I love the fact that everything is made in-house, so I know what goes into it, and getting to know all the regulars,” Nguyen says. I take a (delicious) beef and mushroom pie with me and walk past the vibrant Maker Maker yarn store, a gorgeous little nook for grabbing whatever you need to whip up a quick beanie using organic or ethically sourced fibres. you’ll find the refined yet entirely unpretentious Blackhearts and Sparrows wine shop. It’s famous for opening the door to boutique wines, craft beers, ciders and specialised spirits to the everyday punter looking for a hip, tasty drop at a bargain price. Manager Grace Baker says talking to customers and connecting with people is a special part of the job. “Lygon Street, in particular, has a beautiful sense of community up this end,” she says. Some other notable mentions include Bluebonnet Barbecue for a decadent taste of Texas, Old Palm Liquor’s impressive wine list, Bar Idda’s second-to-none Sicilian food and 400 Gradi for the best margherita pizza in the world (literally). ●

Lourdes was built around 1896 with all the grandeur and flourishes expected of a significant house in the Victorian era. Deep bay windows, a full return tessellated tile verandah with lace trim, a trimmed roofline and leadlights around the entry are all external hallmarks of a fine home of the era. Inside, the presentation is immaculate and the period details are lavish. The double-arched hallway has paired corbels on each support. The cornices and skirting boards in the original rooms are deep and intricate and the five original open fireplaces have marble or carved timber surrounds and some have cast-iron inserts. The original section of the home comprises a formal lounge and large study at the front with those graceful bay windows. Five bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobes or cupboards, two bathrooms, and a formal dining room with parquetry flooring follow. The contemporary section of the home begins with a stunning white kitchen and internal courtyard and then there is an expansive living area. The marble kitchen has top-of-the-line Miele appliances including an induction hotplate and steam oven, excellent storage, an oversize island bench and direct access to a wine room. The living room is large and light-filled with glazing on four sides and double doors on two sides opening to decks; one, a covered outdoor entertaining area, is almost as large as the living area. Decks also surround the tiled and the solar-heated pool. At the rear of the property, the poolhouse could double as a self-contained unit and has a lounge, a kitchenette, bathroom and storeroom.
