It’s been an absolute joy to be able to bring you more and more stories each week about events and things to do across the state, particularly when you consider how bleak the outlook was at so many points last year. In our pages this week, three things that only recently seemed so far away: a leading singer with a national tour, an arts festival in the heart of the city and a theatrical show. And all with crowds! It was fascinating for us to catch up with Delta Goodrem for this issue and her new book certainly looks well worth checking out.  ●

one of us are strippers,” says Magic Mike Live dancer Nick Phillips. “We are all trained dancers in a show that aims to give women what they actually want, not what men think they want.” Phillips is among 20 performers headed to Melbourne to showcase their moves in the Channing Tatum-conceived and directed Magic Mike Live, based on the hit films. Melbourne-born Phillips lived in LA and worked with the likes of Cher and Britney Spears when asked if he wanted to return home to do the show. “It’s the best decision I could have made because America’s a mess right now,” he says. “And it’s a dream job that brought me back to my family and the great food and coffee I was missing. It’s surreal to even have a job right now.” Both Phillips’ parents performed with the

Australian Ballet but he never felt coerced to dance. Aged 16, his first paying gig was at a Dandenong Plaza fashion parade. Now he’s dancing for hundreds of women and some men each night in a show that aims to make women feel empowered and safe. “The thing with strip shows is that it’s always been men oiled up, fake tans, hairless bodies. That’s very dated, very ’90s. This show is created by women, along with Tatum, to discover what women want, to listen and respond accordingly.” Phillips suggests a significant point of difference to other strip shows is the lack of tacky moves since the bulk of the choreography is hip hop. There’s also tap dancing, a pool pas de deux and acrobatics. The men have been trained to read body language to sense if a woman doesn’t wish to be approached. Fellow Melburnian Ned Zaina was a principal dancer with Opera Australia for three years, shone

in musical theatre, then joined Magic Mike Live. “This show is full of surprises,” he says. “It’s our job to help people feel seen in an environment they haven’t felt seen before. I make eye contact and make them feel like they are special.” With his classical dance training, Zaina brings something unique to a show that has also allowed him to grow as a performer. He believes his opera and musical theatre experience generates a stronger connection with the older audience members. “It’s a lot more of a classy event than what it’s perceived to be from the outside. But yeah, of course, we’re taking off our shirts and being sexy and dancing like crazy and doing it in a way that’s super fun and hopefully enjoyable.” Josh Williams came to Melbourne from Auckland to work as a singer. Having belted out tunes with the Backstreet Boys and Jason Derulo, in Magic Mike Live he helps seduce the audience with his voice. “I was taught how to sing by my older sisters, and that’s my passion,” says Williams. “It’s more like a theatre show; I don’t believe it’s a strip show. Wait until you see it. It’s totally different to what you think it’s going to be.”  ● MAGIC MIKE LIVE \ The Arcadia, Birrarung Marr from June 8.

COVER STORY

She’s been in the spotlight for decades, so is there any more to know about Delta Goodrem? Yes; plenty.

I

n her 18-year career, there’s little that singersongwriter Delta Goodrem hasn’t had a go at, but writing a book is a first. Now 36, Goodrem is in a place of reckoning, where talking about the past and how it’s shaped her is now up for discussion. Bridge Over Troubled Dreams accompanies the release of a new studio album of the same name and revels in the stories behind the making of each track. But more than that, Goodrem opens up about love, health, and how she’s embraced fame and observed what it’s done to others in her pursuit to find her own happy place. “I have been in TV and music since I was very young, and so much of my life has been in the public eye,” says Goodrem, who was signed to Sony Music at the age of 15 and released her 2003 debut album, Innocent Eyes, aged 19.

album last year. The feeling of learning to sing again left her confused and unsure about her own musical future. She wrote Keep Climbing to remind herself about the importance of resilience. “The song is about admitting the fear in change and being stuck in between two lives,” she says. “It’s the moment in between where you were and where you are going in your life. It’s important to live in hope.” Goodrem says she’s learning to lean into discomfort when writing, trading metaphors for reality and taking her fans on a particularly personal journey as a result. She says the music industry’s forced slowdown has given her a new perspective on what matters in life. She’s living in Sydney, enjoying being close to family and friends, and is in a relationship with musician Matthew Copley, but she’s tight-lipped about the

This time it’s public “As a result, some of my previous songs were veiled in metaphors, but this time I’ve been incredibly personal, raw and honest. I have opened up and shared stories that I have not shared before.” The story of how her mother Lea nearly lost Delta in 1984 when seven months pregnant is told in the book via the song Crash. It’s the first time Goodrem has felt comfortable to speak about a trauma that belonged to her parents. She used the time during the pandemic to unravel the hurt they went through while expecting their first child – Goodrem was delivered 10 weeks early as a result of the car accident. Goodrem also touches on the complication of surgery to remove a salivary gland, which led to her temporarily losing her speech while making the

relationship, preferring to keep her cards close when it comes to matters of the heart. Everybody’s Famous is her observation of fame and what it means in the modern world. But as someone who has been in the spotlight since she was a teenager, fame hasn’t affected her, she says. “Sometimes, it feels like everyone right now is famous. I think I have stayed the same but have tried to adapt and evolve,” Goodrem says. “Ever since the start of my career I’ve had very strong core beliefs, and I think sometimes it’s the people around you that change.” A Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer diagnosis at the age of 18 undoubtedly changed her life forever and is the reason she’s not let fame get the better of her. She went through eight months of chemotherapy

and two months of radiotherapy before she went into remission. Goodrem holds tight to her philanthropic work. Through the Delta Goodrem Foundation, she works with St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney to help fund medical research into blood cancers and autoimmune disease. “St Vincent’s is where my journey began and I wanted to give back,” she says. “While going through cancer, I was overwhelmed with all of the love, support and kindness I received from the public, friends, family and my incredible team of healthcare providers. “Starting the foundation was a way of making sure that we can really make a genuine impact and meaningful difference in people’s lives.” Since beating cancer, her health has become a huge priority. Goodrem says it all comes down to eating well, getting plenty of sleep and going back to nature to find moments of peace and clarity. “It’s really important to stay in tune with your body so you know when you need to conserve energy and know when to give it out,” she says. “It’s coming to that realisation that it’s OK to sometimes conserve and just be alone and heal. That realisation was big for me.” A national tour which kicks off in September will take the ARIA Award-winner around the country – a moment she’s been waiting for. “I love performing and touring and can’t wait to play live again and see everyone face to face,” says Goodrem, who has sold more than eight million albums globally. She will perform her new music and hits from her back catalogue – and is currently working on the stage spectacle. “To celebrate in person together again and feel the incredible energy in a room that we haven’t had for a year is what I am most looking forward to.”  ● BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED DREAMS \ In stores now

Hot winter nights The Rising festival brings a new twist on a good time out in the city. Wo r d s

W

hen Melbourne’s winter arts festival Rising opens on the night of the total lunar eclipse, it will bring a new perspective on what constitutes a good night out in our city. Divided into four main districts, the model is built for these pandemic times: it’s outdoors, allows exploring at your own pace and discovering art in the depths of the night. “The festival is about bringing people together to celebrate with the River district [Birrarung Mar], Midtown, Arts District and Chinatown plus satellite projects all around. You only need to go to one of these beacon districts to discover more than is obvious,” says co-artistic director Hannah Fox. The winter festival is designed to allow exploration of the city’s surroundings on foot. “It’s intuitive and meant to be experienced through geography, rather than flipping through a list of shows in venues – even though there is an element of that, too,” says Fox.

BUNGUL WITH THE MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA \ The inspiration for Gurrumul Yunupingu’s album Djarimirri (Child of the Rainbow) comes to the stage through storytelling and dance with the MSO. Bungul is an ode to his legacy, retracing the ancestral connection of his songs to east Arnhem Land. Bungul is a hypnotic performance with Yolnu dancers and songmen, while paintings that inspired the album are also on show. It’s thanks to senior Yolnu Don Wininba Ganambarr, who ensured it reflected the places Gurrumul sang about. “Everything about this show is the continuation of telling a story. To understand that requires knowing the world that exists in east Arnhem Land,” says Ganambarr. “We live on the land and in nature. We are opening a book with Bungul and presenting it to Australia and the world.” Producer Michael Hohnen says: “When you hear Gurrumul sing, you connect with his voice, but couldn’t see the stories. Bungul traces that connection to country, and what you see via the dance is told with respect for the country, those songs and song lines.”

PATRICIA PICCININI \ A Miracle Constantly

Repeated. In the Flinders Street Station Ballroom, hidden for decades, Australian artist Patricia Piccinini unveils an eco-system of hyperreal sculptures, video, sound and light to talk about science and nature. Inspired by a tree felled in Doncaster to make way for a freeway extension, A Miracle Constantly Repeated is an embodiment of wonder, while looking at what we’ve lost. It’s where silicon sculptures delve into themes of environmental wipe-out, regrowth and recovery from trauma and even begs the question: what if genetic engineering could fix some of our evolutionary problems? “The key idea is to explore our relationship to nature, and it seems even more important right now,” says Piccinini. “The installation asks the question: how can we arrive at a place that is positive for humans and species? I look at our recent past with the pandemic, the bushfires and our loss of koalas and am very interested in how we come back from these traumas. How can we find resilience?”

Melbourne, it’ll be the first time they’ve performed together since March 2020. The return of Berlin-based Tony Buck will see the avant-garde jazz improv trio head back into the studio. At Rising, they’ll play material from Chris Abrahams’ solo piano albums and preview new songs. “We have been a band for so long and don’t live in the same cities, but when we come together, the magic is there, and we love touring and getting the band together,” says Abrahams. He also has a new project with Gareth Liddiard (Drones) and Jim White (Dirty Three) in the works. “I was chuffed that Gareth asked me to involved. have a handful of friends who match my excitement around food. They over-order, finish everything and always tip. So, when one of them texts me with the news that The Hardware Club is his new office favourite, I know I’ve backed a winner. The former workers’ social club on Hardware Lane is like a neighbourhood gem in the heart of the CBD. There’s a wood-fired oven resembling the armoured shell of an armadillo, pillars and pipes in primary colours and specials scribbled on blackboards. The restaurant’s brilliant staff and lively take on northern Italian food set it apart. There’s no pasta in cacio e pepe, which is instead a half-toastie filled with gooey cheese. Marrow lifted by salsa verde is scooped from the bone onto toast, and spaghetti assassina is as the menu promises: “very spicy”. It uses yesterday’s pasta, a thicker variety called spaghettoni from an artisanal producer in Naples, fried off in a pan and crowned with a cooling mound of mozzarella. “We should probably order something green”

To finish, a waiter announces our “lean Italian sausage” has arrived. The giggles are ceased by the sheer impressiveness of the flame-roasted coil on braised silver. It looks huge, but we get through it.

Life on the lake

The glow of the afternoon sun over the water at Edwardes Lake Park cements it as a jewel in the crown of Melbourne’s northern suburbs. It just teams with life, with a vibrant mix of people picnicking around playgrounds while children scream joyfully on the massive slide or on the flying foxes. The 28-hectare park, which is visited by more than 135,000 people a year, has two lovely playgrounds, a skatepark, barbecues with shaded seating, walking trails, exercise equipment, sports facilities and toilets. The vocal birdlife swoops and swims as walkers and joggers make their way around on the shady trail. To find the park I weave my way past tennis courts and a bowling club, looking out over the beautifully maintained lawns and onto the water. It’s full of all the makings of an impressive little adventure, and spying an ice-cream truck in the distance I know where I’ll be finishing my journey.

WHO WILL YOU FIND THERE?

Walking through the park, I am happy to see the stunning diversity of people and experiences it holds. Laughter rings from groups of women in brightly coloured head scarves sitting together by the barbecues as their children dart through the playground. There are young couples wearing band T-shirts pushing their kids on the swings. As I follow a trail around the water, I see teenagers playing soccer and some girls playing a classic game of Aussie rules marker’s up. People pump away at the exercise equipment while others lie under the trees, napping away the afternoon. It’s all of Melbourne rolled into one place. I see a woman with a bag and a grab-stick fishing cans out of the lake, so I go to say hello. Liz Hall works as part of a local group called Friends of Edwardes Lake to preserve, restore and manage the ecosystems of the lake. She says it’s important people respect the park by taking their rubbish with them and being mindful of its wildlife.

“I love nature, I love wildlife, and for me that’s part of what this is about,” Hall says. “Two Sundays ago, we were standing in the creek, and we heard this plop in the water and we turned around, and there was this tiny southern brown tree frog right beside us – it was so exciting.”

Watch the sun set over Port Phillip Bay and then wander out to dinner. Exploring the restaurants, bars and cafes of Bay Street and Victoria Avenue could be a full-time mission for the new owners here. It’s one of Melbourne’s most popular gourmet quarters. Afterwards, return to your beachfront penthouse and enjoy the art deco glamour, the spectacular views of the city skyline, and the glittering light show that fringes the bay. The apartment is about 211 square metres in area with a 16.6 square metre balcony at the north-eastern end. The design offers excellent zoning. Living areas, and one bedroom, are at the bay end of the apartment. The floor plan then splits into wings with the main bedroom, balcony and family bathroom on one side of a wide light well, and a bedroom, en suite and study on the other. The front rooms are glorious with pine floors, high ceilings, sparkling white walls and a beachy atmosphere. The formal lounge is eight metres long with a fireplace; the dining room and family room are both six metres wide. A box bay window in the family room soaks up those blue views, and the bedroom at the front has a beautiful, wide curved bay window. The white and stone kitchen has European appliances, including a 900-millimetre stove, a pantry with double doors and island bench for casual meals. The apartment offers a high degree of flexibility. The two front rooms could be configured as you please and the wing with the study has external access. The main bedroom has a deep walk-in wardrobe and opens to the balcony.
