Getting dressed up really does feel so 2019. But for those who have missed the chance to dress up over the past 19 months, the end of Melbourne’s sixth lockdown could not have come at a better time. As Jane Rocca explains in this week’s cover story, the Melbourne Cup Carnival is not just one of the city’s favourite sporting events, but one of our favourite fashion events. So, whether you’re enjoying the action from home or the park, or among the small crowd allowed at Flemington, Cup Day might be your long-awaited chance to swap your activewear for something a little fancier. ●

Melbourne, it’s time! As we begin to see the light at the end of the pandemic, many Melburnians have never been more ready to dress up for the spring races.
Montana wears The Raw Vision Blazer and Pant from LUCAS DAWSON
ictoria Racing Club ambassador and model Montana Cox returned to Australia on Christmas Eve last year, leaving behind COVID-19ravaged New York – her home since 2013 – for a debut role on Neighbours. The aspiring actress, who for the past eight years has returned to Melbourne for the spring racing carnival, says she’s never been more ready to swap her activewear for a glamorous trackside look. “Women can’t wait to dress up again in Melbourne,” says the 28-year-old. “For me, it’s all about embracing spring’s best colours – think rich reds, pale pinks and canary yellows. It’s about getting out of the grey mode ... and opting for something inspiring. It’s really our chance to change the mood.” It’s been 10 years since Cox won Australia’s Next Top Model, propelling her from high school student to the face of Harper’s Bazaar Australia magazine. Since then, she’s walked for Pucci, Etro and Bottega Veneta at Milan Fashion Week, and for Christian Dior and Chanel at Paris Fashion Week. “I’ve missed doing international runway shows this past year as I got stranded in London for an entire year,” she says. “But the silver lining is I’ve been able to spend time with my parents in Melbourne.” Whether Melburnians will be celebrating the Melbourne Cup Carnival at home on the front lawn, at a picnic with friends or with the capped crowd of 10,000 at the track, there’s no question many of us can’t wait to dress up for the occasion. This year marks the second year of Myer’s Fashions on the Front Lawn competition, in conjunction with the VRC. With no crowds at last year’s carnival, the competition proved a hit with Melburnians starved of opportunities to dress up.

The city’s fashion designers and milliners say the appetite to dress up this year will be just as ferocious, with garden-party chic tipped to be the look de rigueur. Designer Lisa Barron pitches the importance of “occasion” in a pandemic and is all about bringing back floral, while floaty silk dresses will also find their moment to shine. There’s been a subtle shift during the pandemic, she says: “Women want form-fitting with stretch – it has to be comfortable, so I’ve opted for weighted stretch jacquards or cotton sateen.” She says she decided to bring florals back in a new way. “It’s a regrowth of sorts – where you’ll find a floral print that looks like an unfinished artwork. “And I’ve introduced three-quarterlength sleeve jackets as they really dominate over a suit jacket in a postpandemic world right now.”
JA N E R O C CA
Julia Hemingway, director of Torrance, says her spring collection channels our desire for positive energy. She captures that yearning through retro silhouettes with a modern twist. Her capsule leans on the ’60s and ’70s, bringing bohemian chic to the track – with styles from minis to floor-length garden dresses with a painterly ambition to inspire us. “We are desperate to dress up and want a reason to do it,” she says. “Women don’t want a one-off dress anymore; during the pandemic they’ve wanted to purchase for longevity, something that is timeless, can be worn a few ways and comfort is the key. We focus on sustainable and breathable fabrics for the races – think linen, cotton and silk. “We’ve seen a massive trend from SS21 runway shows where people are going to dressing to spark positivity
Millinery designer Chantelle Ford says “oversized bows, colourful metallics, bright clashing colours and cute details are in”.
“It’s a great time to choose bold prints, statement shapes that have an element of comfort – where you can put on the high heels or slip-on flats if wearing it to the park.”

and joy. It’s a great time to choose bold prints, statement shapes that have an element of comfort – where you can put on the high heels or slipon flats if wearing it to the park.” Fitzroy-based milliner Melissa Jackson says this is the time to embrace wide-brimmed hats for optimal social distancing. For the races, Jackson is best known for a signature handsculptured shape. “I’ve always enjoyed the notion of tone on tone/shade on shade,” she says, “so the current monochromatic vibe is a fashionable option.” Milliner Chantelle Ford says when choosing headwear, think about what makes you feel good about yourself. “Oversized bows, colourful metallics, bright clashing colours and

cute details are in. Wear what excites you,” Ford says. “Without a headpiece, your outfit could look like any other Zoom meeting, and we’ve all had enough of those,” says Ford, who predicts turban-style headbands with detachable veiling will be popular. “We all deserve a little freshness in our lives right now, so if budget permits, shout yourself something special,” she says. “That way, you have something fun to style on the day and have a versatile piece that you can wear again and again after spring racing.” ● MYER FASHIONS ON YOUR FRONT LAWN \ Vist the website for details. ● fashionsonyourfrontlawn. com.au

hen applying for a scholarship to one of Victoria’s private schools, it pays to stand out from the crowd – maybe even with a cartoon shrimp. Educators at Preshil School in Kew were “blown away” this year when a talented applicant submitted a short film, titled Scholarshrimp, which featured an animated shrimp character wearing a mortar board. “It was charming and thoughtful, but it was so much more,” says Preshil interim principal Cressida BatterhamWilson. “It spoke to issues that are

“Consider the strengths of that school and whether they align with yours.” The co-educational institution is one of the hundreds of Victorian independent schools to provide scholarships, though offerings across the state range in focus from music to sport to financial need. Some scholarships are strictly academic, for which students are evaluated mainly on their exam scores, while other scholarships take into account extracurricular activities or leadership skills. Though scholarships rarely cover the entirety of a school’s tuition fee, they can offer a reduction of up to 50 per cent or even 75 per cent. It’s a significant discount for families in a state where big-ticket schools can cost $30,000 per year. Simply sitting for the test usually incurs a fee set by the school and, even with a scholarship,
parents will have to factor in a range of other costs, such as excursions, technology and uniforms. But students seeking scholarships face stiff competition. According to the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), one of the country’s top scholarship testing organisations, about 10,000 students sit for its scholarship exams every year. In Victoria, the scholarship process is “highly competitive”, says Annette Paroissien, the executive director of Hendersons, an entrance exam tutoring and coaching service based in Kew. Though every family’s situation is different, she says she would encourage most students to apply for more than one scholarship. Even top-performing students may not receive one, which can be hard for
CRESSIDA BATTERHAM-WILSON
high achievers and their parents to stomach. “This can be difficult for students and their families, as it may be the first time that they have experienced an academic ‘failure’,” says Paroissien. Experts say it’s less important to shop around for particular scholarship options than to research schools that are more generally the right fit for your child. “Consider the strengths of that school and whether they align with yours,” says Batterham-Wilson. Parents who want their children to apply need to think well in advance, with application deadlines running far ahead of when students receive their scholarship. “Generally, we would recommend that … parents commence planning
at least two years in advance,” says Paroissien. Sacre Coeur, an independent Catholic school for girls in Glen Iris, will begin accepting applications for 2023 in November this year. Principal Adelina Melia-Douvos says parents should familiarise themselves with key dates and processes, but remember not everyone will get one. The school averages about 100 applications every year, though only 12 to 15 are successful. “It is also important that parents are encouraging of their daughters throughout the duration of the process, understanding that there are many considerations in the awarding of scholarships, with the performance on the examination being one criterion,” she says. ●
