Eat, drink & be merry Melbourne’s best beer gardens. Wo r d s

hey say there’s a negative correlation between the quality of restaurant food and the attractiveness of its setting. When it comes to the most democratic of venues, the Aussie pub, that’s simply untrue. In Melbourne, beer gardens are designed for eaters as well as drinkers. They can be tucked away in lanes, on rooftops, sheltered from the variable weather and wide open to sunshine. Here are some worth eating at.
from the chef-led menu, whether the famous whipped cod roe, fish pie made with rockling, smoked ocean trout, prawn and sorrel, or the charcoal chicken Tuesdays.

This multilevel Flinders Lane behemoth can fit about 800 punters, but the tiered beer garden is the soul of the venue. There are huge ficus trees and lots of greenery that bring the outdoors in. The best beer garden in the west is a collaboration between Julian Hills from Navi restaurant and Hop Nation brewery. Zymurgy is a 250-square-metre area with its own bar, a giant rooster mural and restaurant-standard food with a focus on fermentation. Think smoked rainbow trout with smashed miso potatoes and chargrilled preserved lemon chilli chicken.
This newcomer reopened after lockdown with a laneway beer garden tucked between two brick walls and shaded by umbrellas. There are a dozen beers on tap, wine from independent producers and cocktails with names that reference the building’s former life as a bank. Start with cured ocean trout and lamb meatballs, and then go large with an 800-gram rib-eye for two.

This beer garden has incredible views of South Melbourne and 16 beers on tap. Food here is Indian-British. That means fries in curry sauce and samosa chaat as beer snacks, $20 curry bowls served with rice and papadums, and mains like butter chicken parma and samosa burgers.
This multi-pronged venue has a Beer Garden and Rose Garden. The former offers classic counter service, while a seat on the Rose Garden’s rattan chairs and lounges sees people order from $65 or $85 set menus. The food here is more ‘garden party’ than the Beer Garden’s pub classics.

“We need to celebrate each other as women; it’s how we can encourage each other to make a difference in the world that’s really important.”
I
f 60 Minutes’ youngest recruit, Melbournebased television reporter Sarah Abo, had followed in the footsteps of her parents, she’d be working in a science lab rather than filming pieces to camera. But the 33-year-old fell in love with hard news, reporting from all corners of the globe when she graduated from Monash University. She did work experience at Channel 10, which led to a gig on SBS’s Dateline, and a few years ago joined Nine’s flagship journalism program 60 Minutes, where she could delve deeper into storylines and where long stints doing research proved to be the key to her success. Next month, Abo will host the 2021 L’OrealUNESCO For Women in Science Awards, celebrating those who work behind the scenes to make a difference. Since 2007, the awards – to be celebrated next month in Melbourne – have supported the endeavours of young female scientists who are at the dawn of their careers but are already making exciting inroads in their chosen fields. Fellows of the award receive support to further their groundbreaking research. The significance isn’t lost on Abo. “Scientists are the new rock stars these days,” she says, pointing to how the pandemic has helped shift them from behind the scenes to centre stage. “They make the world go round from the mobile phones we use to the Zoom technology we use – science is everywhere. I think we often take it for granted, and these awards are a great opportunity to celebrate female talent and their ideas. “The role women play in science is really underrated and these awards is an incredible opportunity to champion their work and encourage the next generation to enter the workforce.
“We need to celebrate each other as women; it’s how we can encourage each other to make a difference in the world that’s really important.” Abo arrived in Australia in 1990 as a four-yearold from Damascus, Syria, with her mother, Samia, her father, Fouad, and two younger sisters, Yara and Shaza. Growing up in Greensborough, she saw firsthand how her parents resettled in a new country and chased their dreams. “I come from a family full of scientists and it’s something I am very proud of,” she says. “They’re all busy using their right side of the brain but I went for the creative left side with my career. And everyone, in due course, will have a Dr in front of their name, except me!” Her father works for the Environment Protection Authority as an auditor assessing soil contamination and her mother has a PhD in pharmaceutical science and works as a pharmacist. Yara and Shaza are making scientific contributions in the areas of paediatric blood cancer and physiotherapy, respectively. “I’m the odd one out,” Abo says, smiling. Abo was able to return to Syria when she graduated from year 12 in 2003, reuniting with grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. It was the trip of a lifetime and one she speaks of fondly. “That was one of the best trips of my life. It was extraordinary,” she says. “We went for Christmas holidays and stayed for New Year’s Eve. My grandparents had visited us in Australia before, but suddenly we had family, and that’s something we didn’t have in Australia – an extended network of people. I never understood what I was missing until I realised that this is what everyone talks about. It felt like, ‘Wow, this is what it is like to have a big beautiful family’ – what a joy.”
Abo’s resilient nature has served her well in the cutthroat world of TV journalism. She’s scored a few exclusives along the way, too, from an Australian interview first with climate activist Greta Thunberg, to meeting former British PM Tony Blair and covering the refugee crisis in Lebanon, Turkey and Greece. These days, instead of travelling the world for stories, she’s been doing Zooms from home at odd hours. Last month, she interviewed the mother and stepfather of murdered American traveller Gabby Petito, waking at 2am for a 4am interview. “Sometimes, it’s a real challenge to speak to families who are going through grief; that’s when you’re feeling the heartache,” Abo says. “Everyone is unique in how they express their own pain. It’s our role to embrace that and retell it. “I never really feel alone in the reporting I do. I’m in a lucky position to be able to talk with the crew and team I work with. They are only a phone call away if it gets too heavy. But yes, you have to decompress after a big story and be aware if issues arise for you personally.” With Melbourne’s lockdowns over, Abo is most looking forward to the simple things in life. “It’s been so nice to come out of these lockdowns and see loved ones again,” she says. “To be able to see someone in person and sit at a cafe, pub or restaurant and physically embrace people safely is what I am most looking forward to. “It’s all thanks to science that we’re able to do this. The greatest powers in science are collaborating to maintain our lives and livelihoods.” ● L’OREAL-UNESCO FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE AWARDS \ December 1 in Melbourne. ● forwomeninscience.com.au

New voice to fan favourite Gold 104’s Christian O’Connell is loving his new life Down Under. Wo r d s

hen popular UK radio presenter Christian O’Connell relocated from London to Melbourne three and a half years ago to take over Gold 104’s breakfast show, it was a chance hook-up with comic duo Hamish Blake and Andy Lee that led to the move, he says. Blake and Lee were in Britain filming their The Gap Year series. “They emailed me to say they were fans of my show and listened to my podcast in Australia.

Christian O’Connell has taken over the city.
They wanted to be a guest while in the UK and I was like, ‘Well yes, for sure,’” O’Connell says. “That’s how our friendship began. “They also kept asking me to come to Melbourne. I rang Andy Lee one day – perhaps I was in the middle of a part midlife crisis and part wondering with my wife if we had done all the exciting stuff by our mid-40s already. We felt like we were just hanging on,” he says. “I asked Andy if my accent would be a problem if I relocated and he said it would be challenging but it wouldn’t be impossible. They didn’t line up the job, I had to go out and get that myself.” Clearly, the accent didn’t matter. O’Connell hosts Melbourne’s top-rating FM breakfast show, and he keeps winning fans. “I had been to Australia 20 years ago with my wife, but never got to Melbourne,” he says. “We did Queensland and every major site but not Melbourne. It’s just what people did back then.” The father of two says the pandemic has brought him closer to his radio audience. With most Melburnians working from home and tuning in,
“But overall, it took a lot of balls to do what I did and I have no regrets about moving here. It’s been fantastic.” he hit the sweet spot between gentle humour, compassion and nostalgia and never shied from sharing his own personal stories on air. O’Connell is about as Melburnian as a Brit can get right now – teaching one of his daughters to drive in a McDonald’s car park in St Kilda and retreating down to the Mornington Peninsula, like the rest of the city. He brought his family to Australia a year before the big move to make sure that the location appealed to everyone. “It was a resounding ‘yes’,” he beams. “The family loved it. But then I got cold feet – what if I got fired from the show? I didn’t want to be the experiment that didn’t work. “I didn’t like the idea of going back to the UK and looking for work again. But I bit the bullet and thought, let’s just do it.”
His book, No One Listens to Your Dad’s Show (Allen & Unwin), released in June this year, shares his funny and very personal journey about the move to Australia as one of the UK’s biggest radio stars (and youngest DJ to ever be inducted into the UK Radio Hall of Fame) and taking the leap of faith into radio and life here. Are there any regrets? “The only thing I regret is the marketing campaign,” he says of the Gold 104 billboards that were displayed across the city for months. “I was everywhere and everyone got irritated. Nobody likes anyone pushed on them. The moment I would speak I would get the look of ‘Oh, that’s the English guy on the posters.’ “But overall, it took a lot of balls to do what I did and I have no regrets about moving here. It’s been fantastic.” ●

HOUSE OF THE WEEK ALBERT PARK \ 151 BEACONSFIELD PARADE 4

Summer by the bay means beach walks and, for the millions who do not live on Beaconsfield Parade, wistfully wondering what it would be like to be at the beach all year round. Here’s someone who knows: “It’s wild,” says the co-owner of this curvy, three-storey house near the Kerferd Road Pier. “When the storms come in, it gets really wild. But there’s something lovely about standing behind the tall windows and watching it all going on, the boats coming in and the Spirit of Tasmania at the dock. In summer, the sunset lighting up that western corner of the bay is something I never get tired of.” Built in 1999 by a local developer, the house with the curved roof has a distinctive presence in this sweet spot opposite Middle Park beach. The current owners have renovated it, installing American oak floors, pebblestone bathrooms and extensive storage, repairing the balconies and converting a water-logged courtyard into a home gym. A fourth bedroom became a dressing room “with a wine fridge in it”, the fashion archivist boasts. “For someone who is into clothes, it’s nice to listen to music and have a poke around all your goodies.” Essentially a new house with a millennial charm, this will appeal to families and sociable downsizers. Two living areas and two main bedroom suites promise flexibility forever, and there’s a choice of outdoor spaces wherein to sniff the ozone. On the ground floor, a family room and a bedroom suite make neat accommodation for guests or adult kids. The gym sits between these and the rear double garage. The first floor – where the view begins – is given to a huge open-plan area, with living (gas log fire) opening to the balcony. The dining area has sliders to a beautiful bluestone courtyard with a Vergola barbecue kitchen. The main kitchen, white and grey with Miele appliances, has porcelain-like Dekton benchtops. The first floor has two double bedrooms, the dressing room and family bathroom. The main suite commands the balcony and bay view. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domainreview.com.au
