As a tennis champion, Mark Philippoussis owned the baseline at Melbourne Park. Now, with his wife Silvana, he owns a fashion label. The couple is the driving force behind a clothing venture that, despite being under the wing of a man nicknamed The Scud (for the speed of his serves), is all about slowing down and halting the fast fashion trend that is tipping mammoth cubic metres into landfill. Meet the pair in this edition and discover their chic staples collection that will form the building blocks of a Melbourne-made, stylish and ecoconscious wardrobe.  ●

Chanel created a style of fashion that

HENRY CLARKE

suited her dreams.

Forever in vogue A new Melbourne exhibition revels in the incomparable style and influence of design icon Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. Wo r d s JA N E R O C CA

I

conic French designer Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel is one of the most influential figures in 20thcentury fashion, known for designing clothing that changed women’s lives. She captured elegance in everything she touched, from the little black dress to her signature Chanel No. 5 perfume, and shaped the way generations dress, think and feel about fashion. She’s also known for quotes such as, “A woman is as close to being naked when she is well dressed.”

An exhibition exploring the French couturier’s fashion footprint, Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto, begins at the National Gallery of Victoria this weekend. It features more than 100 outfits, including jewellery, accessories, cosmetics and perfumes, taken from the bountiful collections at the Palais Galliera and the Patrimoine de CHANEL. Two exclusive pieces make the Melbourne exhibition a little different to that in Paris: a rare 1922 Chanel cape purchased by Australian collector

Krystyna Campbell-Pretty and donated to the NGV; and a 1933 white afternoon dress – off-the-shoulder with cross lacing that ends in a gigantic bow and trailing ties – bought by the NGV last December. NGV curator in fashion and textiles Danielle Whitfield and her colleague Miranda Wallace worked together to bring the show to life and plot Chanel’s career from 1911 to her death in 1971. “At the tail end of the 19th century, women wore underpinnings, corsets and stiff taffeta fabrics. They were festooned with embellishments like frills, bows and layers of lace. It was like decorative excess, and there was no ease of movement,” Whitfield says. Chanel started as a milliner in 1910, with two boutiques, before she packed her bags and headed to Paris to open her first couture house in 1915. “The earliest works in the show come from that moment – a hat dated to 1917 and a jersey slipover from 1916. It’s at that transitional moment we see a big change in the way women dress,” Whitfield says. Ultimately, Chanel became known for her language of opposition, she says. “We think of her use of black and white, the combination of masculine and feminine dress codes and the contrast between sobriety and excess. It comes to the fore with her jewellery, which is more means more means more,” Whitfield says. “And what’s more, she is timeless and still relevant today.”  ● GABRIELLE CHANEL. Dressed for success COVER STORY Retired tennis ace Mark Philippoussis and wife Silvana are

turning their hands to a fashionable, eco-friendly clothing venture.

A

ustralian tennis champion Mark Philippoussis still gets a kick from playing the sport that earned him his nickname – The Scud. However, he’s now channelling that energy into his clothing brand As We Create – a collection of eco-friendly staples aimed at halting fast fashion and overconsumption. Philippoussis, who appeared this year in SAS Australia on Channel 7, says his desire to launch a label with a conscience was years in the making. The father of two, with his wife Silvana, put his name to fashion once before in 2012, while living in the United States, but this project is different. “I wanted a product that was made in Melbourne and could stand the test of time. It had to be a quality garment and create local jobs. The project had to tick all the boxes or I wasn’t going to do it,” Philippoussis says. He appears in the new campaign alongside Silvana – a model, former face of Melbourne Fashion Week, author and artist. Both are looking chic in a monotone range of black, white and grey that’s gender-neutral. “I wanted to solve my own wardrobe problem when coming up with this collection,” Philippoussis says. “It’s full of clothes I don’t wear often enough and I always went for the same eight pieces every week. This journey is about creating a range that’s committed to helping the environment, made from premium organic fabrics and with staple pieces you want to wear time and again.” Relocating to the coastal town of Jan Juc with his family in 2019 was always on the cards for the Philippoussis family. They say they were certain their eldest child Nicholas, 6, would start school in Australia.

6

DOM A IN REV IEW

They also have a daughter Maia, who was born in San Diego. “I owned a beach house in Anglesea from the age of 18 to 28, so I know this coastline well,” Philippoussis says. “It was always on my radar to buy here again and it made sense as it was quite similar to what we had become used to in San Diego. “Running barefoot on the beach is what our son Nicholas had become used to and I love that we can connect directly to the earth every day.” Philippoussis met Silvana via a mutual friend in Los Angeles in 2012. She was chasing her career as an actress and he was busy running his tennis academy in the city and launching a T-shirt line, Phlip Apparel. “I knew she was the one when we met,” Philippoussis says. They married in 2013 and marked eight years in August. Moving back to Melbourne meant they could also be closer to Silvana’s family. “I don’t want to sound corny, but honestly, Silvana is my perfect other half. I know how lucky I am to be with someone who has great values, is beautiful on the outside and inside,” Philippoussis says. “She’s all heart, energy and doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. She has made me stronger and a better person.” Philippoussis won Davis Cup titles in 1999 and 2003, made it to the US Open men’s final in 1998 – only to be knocked out by fellow Australian Pat Rafter – and the finals in Wimbledon in 2003. He looks back on that time with affection. “My Davis Cup wins are a highlight of my career. Becoming the eighth in the world was amazing, but it was cut short by injury at 29,” Philippoussis says. “I still play 12 events a year but it hasn’t been the

case the last two years with COVID. For me, the next chapter is what matters most. I am even more excited about where I am now, fully focused on family and where I will go ... with this business.” Philippoussis never shied from talking about his fast-paced life on the sporting circuit, but he’s swapped that for a quieter, coastal one. He likes to read his favourite book, The Alchemist by Paul Coelho, several times a year. It’s an international best-selling fable that talks about making the most of one’s journey. “I’ve made decisions both right and wrong in life and learnt from it,” Philippoussis says. “The Alchemist is one of my favourite reads because, no matter what people told Santiago [the shepherd boy], it didn’t stop him. Everything that happens does so for a reason. That’s life. It’s beautiful but tough. When hardships arise, I’m the sort of person who will make it into a positive.” When he’s not busy running around with his kids, Philippoussis likes to listen to podcasts with a focus on motivational and business success stories. “I enjoy listening to anything that helps me achieve my goals. If something will put me on the road to where I want to go, then I’m there,” he says. Returning to Australia has given him a greater sense of why family matters, and having his children grow up with their grandparents was key. “I do miss travelling and playing and would love to do it again,” he says. “But I am grateful for what I have done with travel up to now. I hope our kids will be able to soak up what is out there in the world eventually. Seeing different cultures is essential. We live in a beautiful part of the world but to experience other parts is what makes us, too.”  ● ● aswecreate.com

Mending broken wings

CARMEN ZAMMIT

rom ABC foreign correspondent to co-hosting ABC News Breakfast, Lisa Millar has dedicated her career to telling stories. Now she’s put pen to paper to dig deep into her own family’s tale and her experiences of trauma via a memoir, Daring to Fly. A self-described reluctant memoirist, Millar didn’t fancy writing a 2000-word sample chapter for her publisher Louise Adler, but grew to love the experience. “I treated it like a journalism assignment and fell in love with the process,” says Millar, who also checked with her four siblings in Queensland that they were OK for her to proceed with the book. “I got dragged to the starting line and it opened many special moments for me,” she says. “I was never much of a diary keeper, but went through lots of photos and read through the emails I sent to friends when I was first posted to the US in 2001.” Perhaps the most compelling revelation in her memoir is how two accidents experienced within five years of each other added to her fear of flying, giving the book’s storyline wings of its own. “When the engine stopped on my plane during a storm it really rattled my belief in what little control you have over anything in life,” Millar says of the 1993 experience over Queensland while on assignment. “It was similar to being in a car crash caused by a drink driver many years ago, and that experience propelled my fear of flying to take a life of its own. I couldn’t stand up and go to the toilet on a 737 because I was certain the plane would crash if I stood up.” A Fear of Flying course with Ansett helped tremendously, as did travelling with palm cards lined with mantras. “I had to find the trigger to stop the meltdown,” she says. Millar grew up in the small southeast Queensland town of Kilkivan, in

She has quit Twitter due to trolls, and still makes the Twittersphere light up with hashtags of her name, but she’s not fazed by attacks on her interview style, or any mentions of

her late father Clarrie Millar’s affiliation with the National Party. “Going off Twitter is the best thing I have ever done. I found for me it wasn’t working and wasn’t making me feel good either,” Millar says.  ● DARING TO FLY \ Available now, through Hachette Australia.

hen Jamila Rizvi relocated from Sydney to Melbourne in 2015, it coincided with being named one of Australia’s 100 Women of Influence by The Australian Financial Review. The opinion columnist, podcaster, political commentator – and previously a media assistant to former prime minister Kevin Rudd – returns with a new book that explores how Australian women’s lives have changed since the pandemic. Work. Love. Body: Future Women is co-edited by Rizvi and Helen McCabe, the founder of the Future Women multimedia platform and professional network and former editor-in-chief of The Australian Women’s Weekly. The pair delve into the impact of the pandemic via the lens of three essays. “We were looking to the future and asking ourselves, is life going to get better or worse for women,” Rizvi says. “We know that when these cataclysmic global events happen – like a world war or the Great Depression and the pandemic – that policies and approaches by the community shift in radical ways. We wanted to look at how the experience of Australian women might be impacted.” It’s an ambitious exposé – essays that explore the motherload of responsibilities thrust on women in trying times – but perhaps the most indelible mark is felt in its exploration of work and career. “The work chapter is alarming and eye-opening for any woman who reads it,” Rizvi says. “We know that before anyone had heard of COVID, that Australian women had far less money stashed away for retirement and their earnings were less than men. Women were the first out of a job in the pandemic, but they were the first back into a job – but taking on fewer hours at lower salaries.” The book is a no-holds-barred take on what love looks like in family relationships and the experience of women who watched their parents die of COVID19 on Zoom. Then there are the physical and mental impacts on health, capturing a period that has changed women’s lives. In 2018, Rizvi was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour, changing her life but not stopping her

ambition. Two surgeries and six weeks of radiation mean her recurrent tumour is stable for now. “I will always live with the significant ramifications of all that treatment,” she says. Rizvi, an advocate for gender equality, says her time in federal politics led to great opportunities. “It was an extraordinary experience over the five years I was there. I rose up the ranks, but by far the greatest privilege was the opportunity to learn,” she says. “I was often the most junior person in the room where important decisions that shaped this country were made ... you certainly learn a lot from being that fly on the wall.”  ●

FEATURE HOUSE BEAUMARIS \ 433B BEACH ROAD 4

Even in lockdown, the view from the bayside tip of “Beauie” was one of exhilarating freedom. Locals kept hitting the waves in boats, kids kept playing among the rock pools at Ricketts Point. The wearers of designer leggings continued to look fabulous. One Beach Road resident used his quiet time to build a house. With its uninterrupted view of the bay, the three-level house pays homage to why people love this postcode. Beaumaris chic is all about the worship of sea and sky – and if Beauie folk have to turn the house upside down to attain it, they will. Here, the bedrooms are on the ground floor, while the first floor is given to an open plan that flows north-south. With a vast glass wall and balcony, there’s nothing in the way of the big blue. There’s lots to admire indoors. Pale oak flooring, Carrara marble and Italian porcelain finishes, wool carpet and a glass and timber staircase make for timeless good looks. A lift links the three levels. Enter via the side of the house, where a massive American ash door (made by the owner’s carpenter son) gives the biceps a workout. At the front, the zoned main bedroom (marble en suite) slides open to a terrace and landscaped garden looking out to the bay. Follow the hall to two double bedrooms, a family bathroom, a laundry with external access and a retreat, which opens to the rear terrace. The first floor should be named the Room of Sighs, for here is where jaws drop. The bay is always the focal point;
