I did my journalism cadetship with this week’s cover star, Jacqui Felgate. She was always going to make it big. The Seven newsreader went above and beyond during the pandemic to share information through her social media, in savvy bite-sized chunks, and was honest about the challenges of parenting and homeschooling. This mix of facts and frankness won her a legion of new fans (including one who sells merchandise bearing Felgate’s visage). Felgate has since signed on as a friend of Emporium in the city – a perfectly stylish fit, as her social media followers will attest. Enjoy this edition.  ●

COVID-19 changed everything, even I’m a Celebrity, says co-host Julia Morris. Wo r d s

JA N E R O C CA

Into the wild

T

he new crop of I’m a Celebrity stars were keen to venture beyond their front gates, co-host Julia Morris says. And she says to expect kindness and camaraderie when I’m a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! returns. The popular series is back for its eighth season, filmed for the second year in Murwillumbah, NSW, instead of its usual location in Africa. This year’s contestants include a country singer, a comedian, a beauty queen and an AFL star, some of whom might not have said yes if the pandemic hadn’t happened, according to Morris. Morris, who hosts alongside Dr Chris Brown, says the production passed on the angsty type of participants from previous years. “The pandemic has affected everyone so you’ll see more social bonding this year,” says the Melbourne-based Morris, who left home for four weeks to film. “The show generates important conversation about health, perceptions of men’s and women’s roles in society ... and it’s really where kindness meets a lo-fi sadness considering how the new world has affected everyone. “Most contestants aren’t available to do this show because they’re busy with their own schedules, but the great thing for I’m a Celebrity is that we have scooped up the best performers and they’re keen to challenge themselves,” Morris says. “They want to have a different experience and get to go beyond the gates of their home. This new COVID norm brings on a different and

fantastic cast that we wouldn’t have been able to get before.” Morris has cancelled her stand-up comedy shows twice since 2019, and admits she likely won’t get back on that stage until 2023, having crammed what work she can into next year to make up for lost time. However, she did write a humorous self-help book Julia Morris Makes It Easy with her husband Dan Thomas, but admits she wasn’t feeling her usual funny self. “The book was an idea that my husband had at the beginning of lockdown,” she explains. “I sort of took the liberty to poke fun at wellness experts, because there’s many of them who think that’s what they are. I wanted to turn that on its head and make fun of that genre.” Getting back on set to co-host with Brown was a blessing that made life assume some normality again. They met years ago when hosting the Logies together – she was in House Husbands and he was on Bondi Vet. Since then, they’ve travelled together for work for eight years. “We were an odd combination in the old days, and I had a very flirty style with my co-hosts,” Morris says. “It started out with me making fun of him as a doctor, and then after being together as much as we have there’s a solid friendship and respect. “We laugh together. He’s incredibly respectful and he emotionally held my hand through menopause – I mean who else does that?”  ● I’M A CELEBRITY ... GET ME OUT OF HERE! \ Starts January 3, 2022, on Channel 10 and 10 Play.

COVER STORY

Style and substance At the time the world stood still, newsreader and fashion muse Jacqui Felgate took giant leaps forward.

t seems everyone is craving VIP access to headlines, and nobody knows this to be truer than Channel 7’s Melbourne newsreader Jacqui Felgate. During the two-year-long pandemic, she achieved what many social media inf luencers can only dream of: growing her Instagram followers by more than 100,000 at a time when the world mostly stood still.

Wo r d s

From reading Seven’s 4.30pm weekday news bulletin, becoming the first woman to host the AFL’s Brownlow Medal Count (in 2020) to creating a social media buzz she can’t keep up with, Felgate is adjusting to life in the fast lane. She is now making the news rather than only reading it, and is adapting to the new pace that comes with a 24/7 information cycle. In part, Felgate, 39, can thank Premier Daniel Andrews’ daily press conferences for giving her the idea that led to her Instagram ascent. She smartly distilled those daily COVID-19 media calls into news snippets, posting a flood of information on her Instagram. Felgate gave the facts via her bubbly social feed and offered

with people. If I could make people have a laugh or smile, people responded to it well – particularly parents, who could see my life was just as crappy as everyone else’s who was homeschooling.” She also counts the solid support of her husband for helping her get through the lockdown and work rigmarole. “Michael and I were like ships in the night sometimes – tag-teaming the responsibilities to get by every day,” Felgate says. “He did the bulk of the homeschooling. I couldn’t have done it without him doing more than 50 per cent while I worked. He did his radio show from home the whole time.” Putting the cold, hard pandemic facts in her social media posts did present some problems,

Every time she posts an outfit the designs sell out in minutes. She loves Scanlan & Theodore (a go-to for most TV reporters, who regularly wear their crepe knits), Camilla and Marc, Zimmerman and Viktoria Woods, but she says the outfit she is wearing should never distract from her journalism. These days she’s a friend of Emporium Melbourne, helping to encourage shoppers to get back to the city and rediscover the precinct. Her own fashion sense has evolved over the decade on Channel 7 thanks to a great friendship with stylist Ben Amery. “I’m really loyal to Ben – he has helped me with my style evolution,” says Felgate, who sees actor Margot Robbie as a style icon and was so inspired

“If I could make people have a laugh or smile, people responded to it well – particularly parents, who could see my life was just as crappy as everyone else’s who was homeschooling.” assurance and some home truths along the way, particularly around homeschooling and having little ones. Her previous role as a political reporter at Channel 9 and for the Herald Sun means she knows a scoop and how to deliver it. The mother-of-two is married to fellow journalist and RSN and Channel 10 racing broadcaster Michael Felgate. With more than 18 years in the industry and a few Quill Awards under her belt, the fandom speaks for itself. Felgate has been immortalised on mugs [she has one in the kitchen] and T-shirts and is still perplexed as to why her husband’s friends bought the tees and wore them to their house one night. “Instagram is a great undistilled source for news so I started posting the key figures and messages of the day and my profile just grew,” Felgate says. “The growth was organic for me. I came to it at a time when the news was heavy and sad and I was always trying to find the positives in things to share

though. Felgate has had to block hundreds of trolls; most of them anti-vax groups who think she has a political agenda when posting online. She won’t shy from dedicating 30 minutes of her day to blocking accounts to assert herself. “I have been viciously trolled but I speak up about it, too,” she says. “But for the most part, I focused on the positive people in social media. I made new friends online that I have now met in real life, so that’s a good aspect to all this, too.” So, what does one do when the going gets tough? You buy an ex-racehorse called Red. “I’ve wanted a horse all of my life,” Felgate says. “When my life gets stressful, he doesn’t care. But for me, switching my mind off is just what I need and I only really get that when I leave my phone behind and ride for 30 minutes. I bought him at the start of the first lockdown. It’s been my sanity.” Felgate’s Instagram isn’t just a source of news – it’s an expression of love for fashion, too.

by Robbie’s gold Oscars dress, she had it remodelled for her Brownlow hosting appearance. Just when family life couldn’t get busier, the Felgates sold and purchased a home in Beaumaris during the pandemic. They’re in the middle of building a new home while they rent in Brighton for now. “We’ve been in Beaumaris for 10 years and it’s our home; we’ll never leave the area,” she says. “But there’s lots of planning hoops to jump through and hopefully it won’t take more than a year.” Until then it will be regular trips visiting her parents in the Great Ocean Road coastal town of Peterborough, where there’s only one pub and general store, and waiting to see her brother, who lives in Darwin and who has just become a first-time dad. “I’m an aunty for the first time. It’s those small things I’m waiting for. To see him and meet the baby. I can’t wait.”  ●

hen Melbourne singer-songwriter Lior played for locals at The Forge Theatre in Bairnsdale before lockdown kicked in, he never expected it to have a profound effect on him. “I really missed that intimate experience of performing [over] the last few years, so I took the chance to do this gig and felt so buoyant afterwards. I drove down for 24 hours and got to do what I haven’t done much of for the entire year. The moment was deep,” says Lior, who has been releasing music since his gold-certified, ARIAnominated 2005 debut Autumn Flow. The last major festival he played was Womad – he managed to get into South Australia before the borders closed. “It reminded me why I do what I do and that even though the pandemic affected our chances of playing shows, I know what I feel when I’m in my happy place,” Lior says. Earlier this year he collaborated with Domini Forster – his long-time support act who started touring with him eight years ago – on a powerful new EP, Animal in Hiding. They wrote a song together a few years back, titled Where Will We Be, which appeared on his album Between You and Me. It also hinted at what might happen next. The Lior & Domini EP is a handful of glistening tracks that explore feelings of isolation and loneliness, conceived long before COVID-19 settled in on the couch. It sees Lior fuse his love of classical and folk music. “Animal in Hiding is about regeneration and proved to be the perfect seed for the times we found ourselves in,” says Lior, who recorded the tracks at Montsalvat. “Having this body of work to go into lockdown with gave us a chance to tweak and refine the songs remotely,” he says. Strings were added by musicians in Berlin and London, but it was the human connection Lior was craving most. “I love human connection; it’s so essential for art and creation. I missed the human energy and

Lior, who lives in Melbourne with his wife Melanie and their daughter Lucca, will get to do what he loves most – interact with an audience – via a spot in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Live at the Bowl series in December. It will also feature artists like Tim Rogers, Kate Ceberano, Kylie Auldist and Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos), Emma Donovan and Paul Grabowsky. A tour with Forster is planned for next year. “It’ll be great to get out on the road and play these songs and share them with audiences who have missed the human connection as much as we have,” Lior says.  ●

Born Lior Attar and best known musically by his first name, Lior arrived in Sydney from Israel as a 10-year-old with his parents. His mother worked as a psychologist and his father in managerial roles, but it was their love of classical and folk music that rubbed off on their son the most.

CAREER RENOVATION

Life & work Successfully switching careers … during a pandemic. Wo r d s Molly Kent Designer and founder, Day Seven uniforms

S

witching careers can be daunting, even terrifying, at the best of times, let alone during a pandemic. However, for a waitress, a bus driver and a surfer, changing profession during these difficult days has been re-energising and highly rewarding.  ●

Designing a concealed terry-towelling seam into a custom-made uniform is one of Molly Kent’s proudest achievements. For years as a waitress and front-of-house manager, she’d wondered what it would be like to wear a uniform that was functional, comfortable, sustainably made and stylish. “I founded Day Seven after spending a great deal of time feeling uncomfortable in what I was wearing at work,” she says. “I thought if that’s how I feel, then others are probably feeling the same.” Kent worked and travelled for about a decade, gigging in Italy, Montenegro and the Maldives, but it was in Japan she witnessed the aesthetic that inspired and motivated her.

“Functionality is key. I’ve created an innovative uniform with a minimalist overlay. And added features like concealed pen pockets, absorbent terry-towelling hems on shirts [and] snap buttons.” Kent launched her label in late 2019, jetted to the US the next month to discuss global expansion but hurried back by January, as the pandemic began to spread. As dark thoughts threatened to overwhelm her, she persisted, securing clients even as the hospitality industry struggled. Kent says the pandemic gave her time to consider her values and figure out what’s important. And now, the phone is running hot. “It feels great to combine both passions – hospitality and fashion, and I’m especially pleased that Day Seven is manufactured in Melbourne.” ● dayseven.com.au

ANDREW THURTELL

Blake Thornton

Brad Turner Artist, Adairs collaborator Brad Turner says he has to pinch himself every time he’s called an artist. Until the pandemic hit, he was a bus driver ferrying veterans to and from bingo at the local RSL. Jobless, he spent his days painting. Soon, his wife noted his great talent and a website was born.

“I just want to touch people’s hearts and it’s so good to see Indigenous artwork in people’s homes,” Turner says. From a handful of drawings sold in a gift store on the Gold Coast, he’s now collaborating with Melbourne-based furnishing and home decor retailer Adairs, creating a range that includes bed linen, lamps, playmats and serving ware. “During these tough times, I want to spread hope and positivity. That’s why I draw rainbows, the sun and moon. I want people to feel connected and a bit of love.” Border closures between Victoria and Queensland prevented Turner’s first-ever trip to Melbourne, where he had been due to shoot an Adairs catalogue. But he’s keen to visit and be creatively inspired in the future. “One of the builders on The Block commissioned a huge piece of art from me for his living room in Bentleigh. I am so grateful,” Turner says.

Surfing coach & mentor

● adairs.com.au/story/brad-turner-for-

Former pro surferturned-mentor Blake Thornton has two rules when coaching: “Don’t beat yourself up when you fail, and have fun.” After a decade on the world championship tour, a ban on international travel and the scrapping of events curtailed his competitive surfing career. Thornton turned to a long-time sponsor, Melbourne-based clothing label Mambo, to help figure out his next step. He believes everyone needs to feel like they have purpose, so he has helped establish a unique mentoring program that aims to discover and support young surfing talent. “We’re looking across Australia, including Victoria, for talent. We love kids with personality and who are a little bit cheeky. As a brand, Mambo doesn’t take itself too seriously.”

Stunning classical lines, Victorian flourishes and an outstanding contemporary rebirth makes this period home one of South Melbourne’s most appealing. A picket fence and immaculate gardens frame the white facade with its return verandah, and a glossy black entry puts the finishing touch to the postcard-pretty family home. It is spacious, luxurious and finely detailed with designer decor in dark and light shades and excellent functionality. Opening off the arched hallway are three bedrooms, the family bathroom, and a home office or formal sitting room. This section has the original Victorian features and all rooms have fireplaces. The main bedroom is here and stunningly decorated with a patterned dado, dark wood fireplace and dark carpet. There is external access from the return verandah, the en suite is stylish and the walk-in wardrobe is generous. At the rear, the living, dining and kitchen area is designed to be sympathetic to the original style and spirit of the home. French doors open to the pool and spa, covered entertaining area and garden. This area is private with builtin seating, barbecue and glass fence to the pool. The kitchen has Carrara marble bench tops, Shaker-style cupboard doors, ILVE, Miele and Liebherr appliances and excellent storage. Behind the kitchen is a butler’s pantry-laundry, which has two walls of cupboards and leads to a storeroom. On the first floor, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a retreat make an ideal children’s zone.
