There aren’t many of us who haven’t been affected by anxiety or depression at some point in our lives. Sadly though, some still find it hard to talk about it for fear of being stigmatised or discriminated against. Changing that is close to the heart of radio host Jo Stanley – so much so that she is hiking along the beaches of the Mornington Peninsula for Coastrek, a fun event bringing women together to raise money for Beyond Blue. In our cover story this week she talks about her own mental health struggles, and the reason she decided to start a radio station for women, by women. ●

TELEVISION

Comedian and writer Tom Gleisner has a knack for creating must-watch TV.

T

om Gleisner spends six months every year scrolling Twitter feeds for his Channel 10 news quiz show Have You Been Paying Attention? but there comes a time when he needs to shut it down. “News is with us 24/7 and at the end of every filming season, I am happy to walk away from it,” he says. “In season, I love diving into the world of crazy celebrities and fascinating international events and discoveries. But it’s six months immersed and then six months in rehab.” Best known for his prolific and almost threedecade-long career with Working Dog Productions – the company that also gave us The D-Generation, The Panel, The Late Show and Utopia – coming up with the concept for his own show in 2013 was a wild-card move for the comedian. “I love HYBPA more because it almost didn’t happen,” Gleisner says. “We had two seasons run and didn’t have many people watching. We came close to being axed, but Channel 10 stuck with us, and we slowly found an audience. We weren’t an overnight success.” But, 10 seasons later, it seems that the audience has stuck with the show – proving anything Gleisner and fellow Working Dog veterans Rob Sitch and Santo Cilauro create is bound to become a hit. With regular panellists Sam Pang and Ed Kavalee, the game show dishes the latest headlines from around the world with quick-witted comedy at its best. The world of comedy has quickly learned of the dangers of cancel culture, and yes, Gleisner does reflect on some of his older TV work with hesitation. “People have to be careful with comedy these days as they find themselves at the centre of a Twitter outrage,” Gleisner says. “I’m more worried about what I was wearing than paying attention to the content – that’s the most embarrassing part.” Though comedy today is more progressive, Gleisner says there’s still an appetite for nostalgia – particularly since the pandemic began – and a popular perception that times were better before.

“Seeing shows like Friends pop up as the most watched on Netf lix is a sign people are happy to go back and revisit old classics. “I wouldn’t go out of my way to put The Castle on, but if it’s on TV on a Saturday night, I’ll stop and watch a few scenes with a mix of nostalgia and pride,” he says of the cult classic he co-wrote at Working Dog. He’s most proud of the feature films he’s made and comedy sketches on The Late Show. But it was the light-hearted adventures in the 1997-98 documentary series A River Somewhere that he holds closest to his heart. “Rob Sitch and I doing a TV show about f ly fishing is one I look back on and think was great,” he says. “The reason we’ve survived in the business as long as we have is that we’ve never allowed ourselves to be pigeonholed.” ●

COVER STORY

One step at a time Women’s radio pioneer Jo Stanley is set to trek the coast for mental health awareness.

P

opular radio and TV presenter Jo Stanley is set to walk the talk when she embarks on a 30-kilometre trek in support of mental health awareness. The 48-year-old mother of one will draw on her own experience with anxiety and depression, as well as the tragic loss of friends who have suffered from mental illness, when she steps out on May 27 as an ambassador for Coastrek, with a fundraising goal of $2.5 million for Beyond Blue. “I’ve always been a person that can easily become anxious – and working as a performer, and in radio and TV, has exacerbated that,” she says. “It’s a very high-pressure environment, with high stakes, that can trigger a lot of self-doubt, worry and fear. “Over the years I’ve had some very serious bouts of anxiety, and in the past five years that’s happened more consistently.” Coastrek traces iconic Mornington Peninsula locations including Cape Schanck, Sorrento Beach and the panoramic views from Point Nepean. Since 2009, the event has raised nearly $40 million for charity and has inspired more than 42,000 people – mostly women – to get moving out in nature for fitness, friendship and fundraising.

6

DOM A IN REV IEW

Stanley is taking part in the hopes of destigmatising mental health issues and raising awareness about anxiety, depression and suicide – potentially helping others who are suffering. “I’ve had people in my own circle take their own life,” she says. “It’s hard to fathom how much pain they must have been in. “The more we talk about mental health, the less stigma will be attached to what is a normal human reaction to how hard life can be. “We all yearn to know we’re normal and lovable and worthy. In talking about our experiences, in accepting the experiences of others, we are opening the door for so many people to seek help who may not have done so.” Stanley says she has followed her heart in recent years, starting her own female-driven live radio station, Broad Radio, after 15 years of working in the male-dominated industry. The station launched in late 2020, and livestreams weekly episodes online with content Stanley wanted to hear on live radio. “I love radio as a medium – the immediacy and connection with the audience on that day and time. But I wanted a radio that was about deeper conversations,” she says.

“I wanted to hear women my own age; to talk about things that matter to my stage of life.” She says women are still under-represented on Australian commercial radio – little more than a quarter of the voices heard are female. “That’s not just my experience as someone who worked in commercial radio for 15 years, that’s a fact that impacts on everyone. “When you remove the nuanced voices of a section of society you erase their experiences and limit their potential to live as powerfully as those who do have a voice,” Stanley adds. Broad Radio, which features interviews and entertainment with women from all walks of life, reached an incredible one million listeners in its first year. Comedian Cal Wilson and journalist Zoe Daniel are among the hosts. “The women on our shows are fun, smart and fiercely strong,” Stanley says. “Our hosts are the best in Australia, well-known for their outstanding media careers and well-loved for their warmth and intelligence.” The Broad Radio team have interviewed a slew of inspiring women from all walks of life. “Comedians, politicians, musicians, sports stars, authors, leaders in STEM and business, entrepreneurs, health experts ... the list keeps growing!” Stanley believes women are more receptive than ever to content created especially for them. “We’re uniting in so many different ways and finding so many wonderful avenues for living our best, most powerful lives,” she says. “At the same time, we’re aware of the work that still needs to be done in areas like women’s health and safety, and together we’re committing to being change-makers.

“We’re uniting ... and finding so many wonderful avenues for living our best, most powerful lives.” JO STANLEY

“That’s why I love Coastrek. We’re both about inspiring and supporting women to be the best version of themselves. Whether I’m walking 30 kilometres or building a radio network, this is only the beginning.” Stanley is trekking with three of her dearest friends who she has known for more than 20 years. “We used to go clubbing together back in the day and now we’re all busy mums with the challenges that come with being responsible for families, careers, finances, our parents and our own health,” she says. “We’ve been there for each other through emotional ups and downs, and we’ve seen the best and worst of each other. We know that if the going gets tough over the 30 kilometres, or in life, we’ll get each other through.” ● ● coastrek.com.au/donate

fit racehorse in full flight down the Flemington straight is one of the great sights in Australian sport. And just as spellbinding is what they are capable of off the track – as demonstrated by the Racing Hearts program. Based on a farm at Moorooduc on the Mornington Peninsula, Racing Hearts is a counselling program that retrains racehorses as therapy animals for children and adults affected by trauma.

“If we want to evoke an emotion of showing more assertiveness, we may pair them with a horse that is more difficult to lead.” LISA COFFEY

The clients learn to express their emotions in a healthy way so that the horses respond with warmth and trust. Anger management, fear, intrapersonal skills, confidence and decision-making are all addressed in the paddocks. For some, patting a horse and receiving affection in return is the only “safe touch” they have ever experienced, Coffey says. “If, for example, we are helping someone with decision-making or boundaries, we might do a leading exercise,” she says. “So, if we want to evoke an emotion of showing more assertiveness, we may pair them with a horse that is more difficult to lead.” She says this technique often helps people who have been in an abusive relationship or been bullied.

“We do a lot with grooming and touch, especially with hands ... it is a safe way for them to experiment with being touched by another living being and touching the horse, too,” she says. “The more they practise those things and get the release of dopamine and serotonin in their brains, it creates new pathways and what they do becomes a habit.” The results are profound, but financing is limited and donations are crucial for Coffey to help more people at any one time. To think like a horse can have powerful outcomes for people working their way through the mire. “Like learning a new language, we can learn new ways of behaving and feeling,” Coffey says. ● ● racinghearts.com.au

It was founded by Lisa Coffey, a horsewoman with a singsong Irish accent, who has combined a love of the animal and a career in racing – in Ireland and Australia – with her studies in psychology. Racing Hearts is supported by the industry, including the Victoria Racing Club, which is focusing on equine welfare through initiatives that provide horses with a secure and loving life beyond the track. Trainers and owners, including those from the Group 1-winning Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace stable, give their retired racehorses to Coffey. No money changes hands – it’s done with the knowledge the animals will have a caring home and great purpose. Trainers, owners and stable staff often visit Racing Hearts to give their former charges a tickle and a carrot. The youngest client is eight years old and the oldest is in their 70s. Most come from schools and referrals from domestic violence organisations and the Department of Health and Human Services. Racing Hearts also pairs with Victoria Police to help members’ families who have experienced grief.

FEATURE HOUSE ALBERT PARK \ 46 KERFERD ROAD 3

No one had heard of Scandi chic when this house was built more than a century ago, let alone thought it might happen one day in a rather gloomy Edwardian house. But Clare Cousins saw the light – a brilliant northerly aspect. The architect had plenty of places in which to work her practical magic, in this single-level abode on a corner block diagonally opposite Albert Park Lake. Externally, the house appears as stolidly red-brick as ever, with just a spangle of leadlight on the front door. But the transformation within is extraordinary. You can run your hands over a lot of clean lines in here, where polished concrete is cool to the touch and pale, fluted timber tempts the fingertips. Cousins has woven her wealth of design influences with the Melbourne longing for sunshine and space, creating an airy, modern home within old quarters. The house retains its side hall and fretwork arch, now bright white above new timber flooring. At the front is the former parlour, now a lounge, office or third bedroom. There’s an open fireplace, and the double desk has chests of drawers. Bedroom two, with its twin beds built into towering oak joinery, looks straight out of some Danish design award. Kids will love being able to yank out drawers of clothes and toys from under their beds. The main bedroom has a corner fireplace and a walk-in wardrobe. The en suite, in white subway tiles, has a shower over the bath. The family bathroom, one door along, has a

DISCRIMINATION IN ADVERTISING IS UNLAWFUL

The Victorian Equal Opportunity Act 1995 makes it unlawful for an advertiser to show any intention to discriminate on the basis of sex, pregnancy, race, age, marital status, political or religious belief or physical features, disability, lawful sexual activity/sexual orientation, HIV/AIDS status or on the basis of being associated with a person with one of the above characteristics, unless covered by an exception under the Act. As Network Classifieds could be legally liable if an unlawful advertisement is printed, Network Classifieds will not accept advertisements that appear to break the law. For more information about discrimination in advertising, contact your legal advisers or the Equal Opportunity Commission.
