The first time I heard about the reboot of the ’90s classic makeover show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, I strapped myself in for a fun and frivolous time, full of “zhuzhing” and pink shirts. But the new, evolved Queer Eye is so much more than a makeover show – it’s a workshop for hearts and minds. The Fab Five are all just that – fabulous – but arguably none more so than grooming expert and this week’s cover star, Jonathan Van Ness. And he’s coming to Melbourne – yas, queen! In our cover story, Van Ness talks about his show, his formative years and the power of kindness. ●

Actress Nadine Garner muses on fame and her Savage River role. Wo r d s

W
orking with one of Australia’s most respected film directors, Jocelyn Moorhouse – known for her feature films How to Make an American Quilt and The Dressmaker – was reason enough for actress Nadine Garner to join ABC TV’s new crime drama Savage River, filmed in Melbourne and regional Victoria. “To have Jocelyn Moorhouse and cinematographer Don McAlpine, who have both had incredible international careers, attached to an Australian television project was very alluring,” says Garner, who started acting at age 13 in The Henderson Kids. Savage River is set in a creepy abattoir town that isn’t so welcoming when Miki (Golden Globenominated actress Katherine Langford) returns after serving an eight-year murder sentence. “The workers who come to this town have come from somewhere else – and I like that Savage River explores all those facets of what makes Australia,” Garner says. “These are the people who come here to do horrible jobs that white Australians don’t want to do. Often, we see country towns with lots of white people, and I think it’s refreshing to introduce this notion of people coming to Australia to be in towns away from everything they know.” Garner plays Miki’s mother, Lynne Anderson, who watches her daughter try to shake her past and find
Going with the flow a place in this unforgiving town. She says that playing the mother of a child who has been sent to prison allows her “to explore that grief process – that is what interests me”. “My character is an animal rescue worker, so while she’s busy saving animals from their grief, she struggles to do that for her own child,” she says. “It’s a juxtaposition that really hits a nerve.” The animal rescue scenes were filmed in Warrandyte, where Garner was surrounded by cockatoos, baby joeys and a baby doe. Garner, a mother of two who lives in Melbourne, has split her career between television work and
theatre for three decades, and says she’s grateful she never got too famous. “I don’t ever feel I was damaged by being in the spotlight from a young age,” she says. “My appearance in Neighbours [in 1985 as Rachel] wasn’t a hyped moment like it was for Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan. I certainly got a lot of followers, and that series still resonates with people and I feel blessed I didn’t have to navigate that sort of popularity from a young age. I took that experience and kept building my acting career.” Having scored regular roles in shows including City Homicide and The Dr Blake Mysteries, Garner
has no regrets about not heading overseas to pursue an international career. She was born and raised in Melbourne’s outer suburb of Knox – “a very hip place now, but it wasn’t when I was growing up”. “It was paddocks that turned into suburbs and Knox City got built when I was a kid. I was the first generation in my family to pursue acting.” Garner is hoping that local dramas will continue to attract high-profile names and give established female actors a chance to be part of them. “Once TV dramas were the poor cousin of cinema,” Garner says. “Now, we have series coming into their own and attracting the great talents, and in turn it’s great for people like me.” ● SAVAGE RIVER \ Premiers on ABC TV on September 4 and is available on ABC iview.

COVER STORY
Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness on his new live show, his rise to stardom and the importance of loving yourself.
H
e’s known for his catch-phrases, his bubbly personality and his long, luscious hair, but when Queer Eye’s grooming guru Jonathan Van Ness arrives in Melbourne, he’ll be swapping hair styling for live comedy, gymnastic forward rolls and multiple leotard costume changes. The 35-year-old’s stand-up show, The Imaginary Living Room Olympian Tour, is about being funny while being political, with queer joy at the core. “For me, the show is a duality – it’s about experiencing joy in difficult times and the humanity of that,” he says. Van Ness went from being a rural hairdresser in the American mid-west to a global TV star thanks to his role on the Emmy Award-winning Netflix reboot of Queer Eye, the sixth season of which aired last year. He says humour has always allowed him to see life’s bright side. On Queer Eye, he is quick to throw out a “Yas, queen” or an “OK, honey”, but there are a slew of articles, memes and even T-shirts devoted to the inspiring and genuinely kind words Van Ness gives the people he makes over on the show. From “You have to create little pockets of joy in your life to take care of yourself” to “You are strong, you’re a Kelly Clarkson song, you’ve got this”, Van Ness’ optimism and compassion is endless. But part of that positivity has grown out of adversity. In 2019, he released a tell-all memoir Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love which saw him share experiences of sex and drug addiction and open up about being sexually abused as a child by an older boy at the local church. These life-changing moments turned into years of self-loathing. Now, he’s found a way to turn those lows into empowering self-talk and self-love, but it

Standing up for queer joy
Growing up in a rural town in the US, Jonathan Van Ness never thought he’d see ‘fantastical’ Australia with his own eyes.
hasn’t been easy. His stage show, for all its comic turns, still confronts some of the tough topics that have made him who he is today. In 2012, aged 25, Van Ness was diagnosed with HIV. He didn’t share this news until he wrote his memoir, but it did cross his mind what it would mean in a Trump-ruled America. By going public he has dispelled some of the myths about living HIV-positive. When Van Ness left his home town of Quincy, Illinois at the age of 19 for Phoenix, Arizona, to pursue a life of hairdressing, he bonded with his paternal grandmother Judy, who had moved there to escape the winters of the north-west. Little did Van Ness know at the time, but that relationship and those precious conversations would ground him in the turbulent times that lay ahead. Judy died when Van Ness was 22, after a long battle with cancer.
“Being around someone who was so relentlessly passionate and unapologetically committed was very inspiring growing up.” JONATHAN VAN NESS
JVN HAIR
“I loved cutting grandma Judy’s hair and we really got to spend quality time together over three years,” he says. “I learned a lot about her attitude to life and defiance, which put me in a good place when it comes to my own battles.” He has a tattoo on his back in her honour that says, “Through kindness comes strength.” Van Ness hosts a podcast – Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness – has written two books and can now add entrepreneur to his impressive CV, having released the JVN hair-care range, which is available at Sephora in Australia. “I fell in love with doing hair when I was a kid after discovering my mum’s hair rollers. To now be the guy who gets to create his own range is more than a dream come true,” Van Ness says. “No matter where you are on the gender spectrum, no matter what your race or age, hair is really about selfexpression. It’s art, and I want you to feel welcome playing with it.” As a child growing up, he never thought he’d leave his rural town, let alone become known worldwide
Wo r d s
for his charismatic grooming pizzazz. “As a kid in a remote town, Australia seemed like a fantastical place of gorgeous beaches, kangaroos, wallabies and where the Opera House existed. I never thought I would see Australia with my own eyes,” Van Ness says. “Bringing my stage show there in 2019 for the first time, filming Queer Eye there and now to be able to see JVN in store – oh, I wish my grandma was alive to see this.” It took until his 30s for Van Ness to accept his flaws and to find some solid friendships, including Taylor Swift, Irish actress Nicola Coughlan of Derry Girls fame and two-time Olympic figure skating champion Michelle Kwan. “Michelle Kwan is my hero and life icon and to become friends with a hero isn’t lost on me,” he says. “I think you find your friends in your 30s and for me it took a long time to meet my people. These women are both insanely talented and so humble. I feel very lucky.” His mother, Mary Winters, ran Quincy Media – a group of TV and radio stations and newspapers that her family sold in 2021. “Being around someone who was so relentlessly passionate and unapologetically committed was very inspiring growing up,” Van Ness says. “Not many women were in managerial positions or in media jobs in Mum’s era. She didn’t give a f--and was happy to kick that door down. I was her biggest cheerleader.” It’s no surprise there’s an element of Olympian fever-pitch in his stand-up show. Van Ness was a high school and college cheerleader and plays that role on Queer Eye – sometimes quite literally – the show’s fourth season saw him going back to Quincy High School to make over his former cheer teacher. He loves high heels as much as he does hairdos, and has leaned into his powers as an activist, teaching others to express themselves no matter where they are on the gender spectrum. “I am so glad I wrote my book and shared my story; that was part of my process,” he says. “But to get to do the podcasts, tour a stage show and keep sharing the love through hair and beauty, that makes me so happy.” ● THE IMAGINARY LIVING ROOM OLYMPIAN TOUR \ Plenary, Convention Centre, Wednesday, September 28. ● jonathanvanness.com/tour

The Melbourne Writers Festival returns after a COVID-19 hiatus. Wo r d s

ALANA HOLMBERG
his Melbourne Writers Festival (MWF) is a case of third time lucky for new director Michaela McGuire. In her previous gig, she launched her final Sydney Writers Festival on the day the World Health Organisation announced a global pandemic. Having been handed the keys to the Melbourne festival in 2021, she then had to watch her first program sink beneath COVID’s stillunpredictable waters. Many would despair, but perhaps there is a sense of freedom in having your finest plans destroyed by forces beyond your control. When the worst has already happened, what is left to go wrong? “My anxiety levels are pretty fine at the moment,” McGuire says. “I did have a moment yesterday, realising it was the anniversary of when we cancelled last year. “But, after two test runs, I’m really excited there’s an actual festival about to happen.” The concerns this year are more pragmatic – facing up to a world in which guests and hosts might be plunged into isolation on the whim of a RAT. An army of understudies has been assembled and briefed, ready to run a panel at a moment’s notice. But there has also been a lot of talk about what a writers’ festival means to Melbourne in the COVID era. “Reading is what got so many people in this city through such a lonely, alienating and disconnected time,” McGuire says. “Having all of those readers and writers finally come back together in a room to celebrate this thing we love so much will be absolutely phenomenal.” If it sounds like a dream come true, that’s kind of the point. The theme of this year’s MWF is “ambition” – talking up the dreams that get us through the darker times. That ambition can be seen in the starry line-up, which features international luminaries such as actor Brian Cox, the multi-talented Jenny Slate and Booker Prize finalist Mohsin Hamid plus a wealth of local talent. Opening night will see three much-loved writers – including Melburnian and Miles Franklin winner Jennifer Down – discuss what ambition means to them, before a season of other sessions teases apart our hopes for our lives, our careers and our nation. Writer Sophie Cunningham is one of those casting light about in the darkness. Partnering with Christos Tsiolkas, she’ll be discussing her new book This Devastating Fever and considering what hope art can bring in hopeless times. Cunningham’s own experience is a little back to front, however. Rather than using her art to escape
As good as their word W R IT E R S O PH I E C U N N I N G H A M
the pandemic, she found that COVID gave her the perspective she needed to finish the novel she had struggled with for a decade and a half. “The pandemic actually made me lighten up about my writing,” Cunningham says. “Because you think, compared to everything else that’s going on, who cares? I actually finished five books, which was insanely productive.” And did that explosion of creativity bring any solace? “I never used to think of it like that,” she says. “But I’ve realised that I feel my best self when I’m writing. It does really help me cope with stresses and to process things that are going on. I do think books are therapeutic – you just don’t want them to read like therapy.” That therapeutic element – the comfort of being immersed in art – is what makes the MWF stand out in a landscape packed with literary events.
“You can go to a good bookshop event or public talk, but there’s something special about going to lots of different events and seeing lots of friends who are interested in books,” Cunningham says. “There’s something about the intensity of the experience that you can’t replicate any other way. That’s why writers’ festivals are so important.” While much of the focus is on luring readers to meet their favourite authors, McGuire says she’s aware that the festival is a launching pad for emerging writers, many of whom would have felt very isolated over the past two years. “We can give writers the boost of confidence and excitement that carries them through the next two years working on a manuscript.” ● MELBOURNE WRITERS FESTIVAL \ September 8-11 ● mwf.com.au

Elwood is tightly held and much loved. Tucked away from any kind of hustle and bustle, this quiet, sophisticated suburb is lapped by Port Phillip Bay and criss-crossed with peaceful streets shaded by old plane trees. It has a strong community spirit, a relaxed family rhythm and excellent cafes, restaurants and bars. In summer, skydivers land on the lawn at Elwood Beach, windsurfers streak back and forth, dodging the more sedate paddle boarders, and swimmers do long-haul laps. Food vans and beach huts sell innovative food on the foreshore, and the Bayside Trail bike and running track is right there. This Foam Street property, designed to provide everything a family needs, offers the ultimate sophisticated Elwood lifestyle with two floors of luxury and beautifully detailed design metres from the beach. The ground floor is a fabulous spread of light and volume with a double-height living room and double-height glazing steel-framed in a Mondrian style looking out to the garden.
