Just before we had our first kid, my husband and I went to New York, hoping to have a white Christmas. We got our wish. It snowed on us as we stood under the gigantic tree at Rockefeller Plaza – pure magic. The next year, three-month-old baby in tow, we tried to recreate our NYC festivities in Melbourne CBD. It was fun, but not quite as magical. This year, however, a touch of big, snowy city enchantment is coming to Melbs, with our cover star David Wenham playing the lead in A Christmas Carol. He talks about the classic tale, and how, nearly 200 years later, it still spreads hope and joy. ●

These Yuletide releases and events are not to be missed. JA N E R O C CA

Wo r d s

Jingle bells swing R eady to deck the halls and get your fa la la la la’s on? Here’s a round-up of some of the best ways to celebrate the silly season. ●

Albums What do Mariah Carey, Nat King Cole and Wham! have in common? Their songs are always some of the most played at Christmas. But why not hit “shuffle” and give some Australian hit-makers a go this season? Jimmy Barnes lends his grunt ’n’ shout to songs such as Jingle Bell Rock, Little Drummer Boy and Santa Claus is Coming to Town and sings a song popularised by Elvis Presley for a hot shoe shuffle

in Blue Christmas. Barnesy even dons his leopardprint dinner jacket for a rockabilly-inspired trip around the Christmas tree. Melbourne soul sisters Vika and Linda Bull also lean into the festive spirit with Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas! It’s the perfect track to get people dancing on Christmas Day as they prepare lunch for those they love. The siblings do a version of Tom Petty’s Christmas All Over Again and lend their pipes to the Memphisborn soul legend Carla Thomas’ single from 1963, It’s Christmas. They also put a sisterly spin on a Willie Nelson classic, Please Come Home for Christmas [which was originally performed by Charles Brown], and Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody.

Stage legend Rhonda Burchmore and jazz ensemble the Jack Earle Big Band come together for A Red Hot Swingin’ Christmas at The Palms at Crown on December 4. Performing new Christmas arrangements with an 18-piece big band that pays homage to the swing masters, they reimagine classics like Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Cool Yule, We Need a Little Christmas and Let It Snow. There’s also an accompanying album for all your festive celebrations. Las Vegas circuit regulars Human Nature return to Australia to perform A Christmas Celebration at The Palms at Crown from December 8-11. They released a Christmas album back in 2013 and a deluxe version hit the shelves in 2016. It’s still popular for their Motown takes on Christmas and duets with Delta Goodrem, Smokey Robinson and Jessica Mauboy. “The Christmas show is one of our favourite things to do every year,” says Human Nature vocalist Phil Burton. “It’s light-hearted and uplifting and it feels like we’re not performing to a crowd in our usual format. The audience is there for the same reason we are, to have a little bit of joy and fun at Christmastime. “Soul-based renditions of classic Christmas tunes resonate with every generation.”

Events What’s Christmas without the iconic Myer Christmas windows? This year’s theme is Disney’s 100 Years of Wonder, and it brings to life magical scenes from Frozen, Peter Pan, Mickey Mouse and The Lion King. If you missed out on annual Santa photos over the past few years, then now is your chance to make up for lost time. Santa takes to his throne at Crown Atrium for free digital photos every day from December 1, between noon and 6pm. Melbourne’s Christmas Wonderland returns to Caulfield with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, elves and Santa Claus on site for an immersive and exciting walk-through experience. You’ll find the North Pole Post Office open for mailing of special letters, and Mrs Claus will be on hand to help little authors. You can make gingerbread to take home, there’s a storyteller corner and a Christmas stage show, too. Oh, and did we mention the skating rink? ●

COVER STORY Beloved actor David Wenham

returns to the theatre for A Christmas Carol.

C

hristmas is coming early to Melbourne this year and David Wenham couldn’t be more pleased. As the miserly lead in the much-anticipated new stage version of A Christmas Carol, the Aussie acting legend is having the time of his life. Actors often talk up their latest production, but it’s unusual for one to sound quite so enamoured as Wenham does. “I’ll be honest, I know of no show like this show,” says Wenham, who has been lured into an all-too-rare return to treading the boards. “I’ve been asked numerous times to do theatre, but nothing has really appealed to me and it’s tricky because you have to commit so far ahead of rehearsals. “Agents don’t really look fondly on you taking yourself out of the market for so long.” A Zoom chat with director Matthew Warchus (best known for Matilda the Musical), who developed the original London production with scribe Jack Thorne (he of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), was all it took for Wenham to sign on the dotted line – whatever reservations his agent may or may not have had. Since making its debut at London’s The Old Vic five years ago, A Christmas Carol has returned to haunt the West End every Yuletide and even netted itself an impressive five Tony Awards after a blockbusting transfer to Broadway. This run of glory is particularly impressive considering the show was devised as a one-off. Associate director Jamie Manton says this surprising longevity is down to Thorne’s script. His writing finds a way to indulge and embrace the delicious traditions and cliches around

Wo r d s

Dickens’ original story – it promises to be the closest Melburnians will ever get to a white Christmas – barring a surprise ice age – while digging down deeper than ever into the human element. “There’s an amazing line in the piece that says we are all made and we all make in turn,” Manton says. “The script looks into generational trauma in the sense of Scrooge’s absence of love from his father and then seeing his father throw away all their money. “So, he’s learnt to have [the] ambition to become a great man through wealth but believes that love isn’t important.” Manton says that, while audiences can expect a bit of spectral magic, the three ghosts of Christmas are here recast as de facto therapists, helping Scrooge work through his issues – past, present and future. As he puts it, this “emotional magic” has really struck a chord with audiences, who tend to leave the theatre with giddy, festive grins. As Scrooge, Wenham should be a big draw for people of a certain age who remember him from his sex symbol days as Diver Dan in Sea Change, even if his transformation from beachy hunk to elderly miser might offer a few of them a reminder – like the ghost of Christmases long past – of how quickly time moves on. When I cheekily suggest his casting as Scrooge might signify the 57-year-old has reached the inevitable stage of an actor’s career where he is less Romeo and more King Lear, Wenham studiously ignores my bait and notes Lear and Scrooge are indeed similar in the way they go from one extreme to another. Overseas, the part has been played by such illustrious names as Rhys

MYKE BARTLET T ●

Ph o t o

Ifans, Paterson Joseph, Andrew Lincoln and Bradley Whitford. What was it about Wenham that made him seem the right pick for an Aussie Scrooge? “David’s interpretation is finding this kind of feral nature in Scrooge,” Manton says. “He’s someone who’s become so closed off he’s like this animal stuck in a cage that bites anything that comes near it. “David has brought this wonderful darkness to the part.” Wenham says that darkness is essential to the first half of the play, in which Scrooge is carefully constructed to lack any possibly redeeming characteristics. “The audience will completely despise this character, and then the big challenge in the second half is to win them over and to see that anybody, regardless of how despicable and wicked they are, given the opportunity, can actually redeem themselves and open up, and can change.” Scrooge’s redemption from villainous miser to generous philanthropist is, after 200 years, the defining example of character growth. It’s tempting to wonder if things are a bit different in 2022, when past sins tend to be dragged up to bring down the most virtuous of public figures. Do today’s audiences still believe in redemption? “I think we have to have hope,” Wenham says. “Particularly at this time of the year, I think there’s a need among us as a community to look for the light.” ● A CHRISTMAS CAROL \ Until December 29, Comedy Theatre.

TRAVEL \ METUNG

Taking the plunge M E T U N G H O T S PRI N G S

I

f you enjoy boating, fishing, golfing or quaint lakeside towns, then you might already be aware of the unique charm of East Gippsland’s Metung. For the uninitiated, however, there’s now one more (very alluring) reason to visit. Metung Hot Springs, which opens this month, offers a sprawling, luxurious adventure in outdoor geothermal bathing, plus a day spa and accommodation. Guests can experience a variety of naturally heated mineral spring pools, plus cold plunge pools, saunas and massaging mineral showers. The crown jewels are the hilltop baths, which are dotted between eucalyptus trees and provide aweinspiring vistas over Metung’s expansive Lake King. Interestingly, this is the second time Metung has had hot springs; the first operated in an informal fashion from the 1920s until the 1990s. The new Metung Hot Springs is a joint effort by local couple Rachel and Adrian Bromage plus the team behind Peninsula Hot Springs. Like Peninsula Hot Springs, the design features a lot of bespoke stonework, curved edges and copper accents, however the backdrop at Metung is radically different. Here, the undulating landscape encompasses a freshwater lagoon and a saltwater lake, and there are views for days.

East Gippsland’s new geothermal baths are ready to soak in. Wo r d s

JA N E H O N E

It’s a four-hour drive from Melbourne, so the owners have focused on getting the accommodation right. They call it “glamping”, but the portmanteau for “glamorous camping” doesn’t quite do justice to the luxury safari tents. Rooms feature king-sized beds, split-system heating and cooling, coffee machines, super-soft robes, en suite bathrooms, balconies with breakfast bars, outdoor bean bags and personal hot-spring bathing barrels. The “lagoon-side” rooms are, naturally, located beside the lagoon (where you might spot a turtle), while the “hillside” rooms come with sweeping views over the property (and a touch more privacy). Glamping guests are also treated to a welcome drink and canapes on arrival, gourmet buffet breakfasts at the on-site country club and access to the wellness activity of the day – which might be yoga, sound healing or forest therapy. Golf carts are provided to help accommodation guests traverse the 10-hectare property. Treatments can be booked through the day spa, including the

venue’s signature massage, Metung Mist, which uses a spa product range specifically designed to conjure the magic of freshly fallen rain. Kings Cove Golf Club is 500 metres from the hot springs site and is one of the most well-regarded nine-hole public golf clubs in the country. Meals can be enjoyed at Metung Country Club, which has recently been renovated by Metung Hot Springs and has a new chef focused on seasonal, local produce. It’s worth driving the five minutes into town to grab dinner by the water at the iconic Metung Hotel, plus you’ll also find a deli, the Local Metung wood-fired pizza place and a Vietnamese bakery. There’s also the House of Yoga nearer the town centre, and a boardwalk that runs along Bancroft Bay, where you might catch a glimpse of the rare burrunan dolphin. Opposite the Metung Yacht Club, you’ll find Legend Rock, a site of significance among the Gunaikurnai traditional owners that appears on the Bataluk Cultural Trail. If you’re not blessed to have a boat, you can hire one (or a kayak) at the lake, or take a sailing lesson. More broadly in the region, you’ll find the Buchan Caves – Victoria’s largest cave system, which is deeply significant to the Gunaikurnai people – and the pristine Ninety Mile Beach. ●

BONNIE SAVAGE

I

never thought my favourite dish on a restaurant menu would be a salad until dining at Jeow in Richmond. Chef Thi Le and partner Jia-Yen Lee replaced the modern Vietnamese menu at their restaurant, formerly known as Anchovy, with a Laotian one in June, leaving the modest space and street signage all but untouched. The salad in question, nam khao, is Laotian crispy rice salad. In parts, the rice comes together in

Wo r d s

crumbling clusters that have just the right amount of chew and the kind of browned edges worth fighting over. They arrive beneath a blizzard of freshly shaved coconut, tossed with juicy pomelo segments and nubs of slightly fermented pork. The new name, Jeow, refers to the spicy, fishy and funky sauces that wrap the cuisine in flavour. Le makes all of hers from scratch, including a sweet, spicy tamarind fish sauce that accompanies Spanish mackerel fish cakes stuffed into fringed lemongrass sticks, and the textural sensation that is vegan sakoo yat sai or tapioca dumplings (though the rest of the menu isn’t vegan friendly). These glutenous spheres enclose earthy Jerusalem artichoke, crushed cashews and salted turnip. Wrap them in the lettuce provided and dig in. Laotian flavours have been a building block of Le’s cooking for some time. Jeow doesn’t label itself a Laotian restaurant, but rather one inspired by neighbourhood eateries on home soil (I only know

S O F IA L E VI N

of one dedicated to the cuisine, NoiLucky in Springvale) and Australian produce. If Loatian flavours are the building blocks, Australian produce lays the foundations. It’s perhaps best seen in the restaurant’s laap – the fiery, herb-loaded minced meat salad that is Laos’ national dish. Jeow has three versions: laap dip, raw Warialda beef and tripe with toasted rice, herbs and padaek (Laotian fish sauce); laap ped, made with Great Ocean duck and roasted chilli; and laap pa, with Murray cod, smoked eggplant and rice paddy. Like the traditional version, they’re unapologetically spicy and electric with flavour and freshness. Order sticky rice on the side. Season pending, main share dishes might include earthenware pots of slippery mushrooms in sour red curry, or perhaps Or Lam, a beef short-rib stew with wood ear mushrooms and long melon. Seafood shines brightest at Jeow, whether whole market fish (sweet, soft-fleshed garfish for my visit)

in sticky lemongrass, garlic chive and honey glaze topped with splinters of wood-roasted garlic and fresh garlic chives, or specials such as Murray cod head brushed with tamarind chilli jam and padaek. I’d return for the velvety coconut sorbet bejewelled with ginger granita alone, but durian and white chocolate is the flavour fusion you never expected to work. It’s served as an aesthetically pleasing Swiss roll slice, fastened to the plate with Meyer lemon marmalade. Dish names and some ingredients may be unfamiliar to many, but the casual, knowledgeable service makes ordering a cinch. Even if Jeow wasn’t the only place in the inner city in which to try Laotian food for the first time, it would still be the best. Give it a miss only if bold flavours make you nervous, and save the booked-out tables for the rest of us. ● JEOW \ 338 Bridge Road, Richmond. ● jeow.net.au

FEATURE HOUSE BRIGHTON \ 60 NEW STREET 4

Is it time for New Street to have a new name? Heritage Row would suit this avenue, home to magnificent estates on its run from Brighton Road to the bay. One is Keyham, the sprawling villa built in 1903 for merchant James Moffat. Set in 1275 square metres on the Were Street corner, it has a park-like garden with an 11-metre pool shaded by a giant date palm. History has lost the name of Keyham’s architect, but we can say this: They were right on the global trend. The arts and crafts style took off in Britain in the 1890s but didn’t hit Melbourne in a big way until the 1920s. Keyham is one of our earliest examples. Lustrous in dark, polished timber panelling with leadlight fanlights and double doors, herringbone parquetry and deep box bays, it has the “truth to materials” and airy proportions the arts and crafters insisted on. Original living and dining rooms have fireplaces and high, chandelier-lit ceilings and offer spectacular spaces for executive entertaining. The current owners have upheld the tradition in their contemporary way, adding a conservatory-style open plan with a north-westerly family area. French doors lead to the poolside courtyard (via the meals area) and to a secluded lawn with a fountain. The white kitchen, sleek in granite, has a 900-millimetre Ilve oven and gas cooktop, Miele dishwasher and a walk-in pantry with wine storage. The bedrooms (all with wardrobes) are varied to suit a growing family. The front bedroom has a box bay window and a fireplace, and would suit a home office or nursery. The main bedroom
