It takes a lot of courage to make a life change as big as the one our cover star Gorgi Coghlan made in 2021. The former panellist on The Project swapped her TV gig to revamp and run The Provincial Hotel in Ballarat. Now, she’s opening her home, Bermingham Farm, to host workshops aimed at connection and healing. Also in this week’s edition is journalist Isabelle Oderberg, who was spurred to write her book, Hard to Bear Bear, after multiple miscarriages. From my own pregnancy losses, I know the need to bring these stories out of the shadows. If this resonates – know you are not alone. ●

Uncovering the grief and trials of miscarriage. I SA B E L L E O D E R B E R G

W
hen it came to writing her first book, Hard to Bear Bear, Melbourne journalist Isabelle Oderberg never thought she’d turn to the darkest days in her life, with multiple miscarriages as her starting point. But the investigative reporter has turned pain into a cathartic analysis of what happens when you lose a pregnancy. “I honestly never thought I would write a book,” Oderberg says. “I know a lot of journalists aspire to long-form writing [but] I never thought I could concentrate on a project this big or deep for such a sustained period of time. I proved myself wrong. “During my losses, I was asked a lot to write about them but I felt strongly that I needed to finish my journey. Once that happened, I started researching what else had been written and found a lot of gaps. “That’s when I started to realise, I needed more time … and more words to really investigate the issue.”
Oderberg unveils the complex world of miscarriages – from the complications to the silence that comes with them – and also dispels many taboos. “To those people who mourn a miscarriage, it is a loss,” she says. “It is a huge loss. Never, ever think that it’s not.” Miscarriages also require support – from family, friends and the medical system. Those who experience them can feel unheard, alone and depressed. Oderberg weaves her own honest anecdotes from each loss with those of women who shared their horror stories with her. “I’m a big believer in therapy, so I had a lot of support through the losses and my pregnancies,” she says. “I’ve continued working on that because all the losses left me with a gnarly anxiety disorder – not surprising. “I definitely didn’t see the book as occupational therapy, but it has been really life-changing to see how much
commonality – and in some cases differences – there is in the experience of pregnancy loss and grief as a whole.” Oderberg also explores the taboo of miscarriages that veers from the church to abortion, from the science to the emotional turmoil, and goes where others fear to tread. “There are also substantial contributions [about] medical misogyny, our general discomfort with grief and the health of people with uteruses – things like menstruation – and a conversational vacuum,” she says. “The book unravels all these different factors … but also shows how they overlap.” She is grateful for a supportive husband who allowed her to do what she felt most important. “I was most nervous when my husband read the book; he had refused to read anything until it was finished,” Oderberg says. “Thank goodness he was very comfortable with everything I

included. I was nervous because he tends to be more private than me.” “The aspects of my personal story were always intended to provide context and be a prism through which to view my investigative work and research. “And, to some extent, it’s a literary device to provide room to breathe and never, ever lose track of the human aspect of loss.” ● HARD TO BEAR BY ISABELLE ODERBERG \ Published by Ultimo Press.

he beautiful Bellarine Peninsula is a treasure trove of some of the very best beaches, wineries, boutique breweries, farm gates, hatted restaurants and charming coastal villages Victoria has to offer. Just 90 minutes south-west of Melbourne in the booming Geelong corridor, the Bellarine incorporates Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Point Lonsdale, Drysdale, Portarlington and Queenscliff. If you live east of the bay (and we know you probably do!), you can take your car on the Sorrento to Queenscliff ferry and avoid the M1. and skydiving – as well as many sensational surf spots, visitors are spoilt for choice. There’s no shortage of stunning accommodation, either. Whether you’re on a family getaway or hosting a girls’ weekend, here are some of the most impressive stays on the Bellarine.
Where we stayed SAGRES QUEENSCLIFF
There’s something about a stay right on the beachfront that makes troubles and stresses fade away. Even when you’re bringing along your two kids under five, the salty air and views of blue will encourage even the stroppiest toddler to embrace some calm.
And when the house you’re staying in is a three-storey, luxury home with everything you could possibly want or need – well, the experience just gets even more serene. Sagres, named for the southwestern-most point in Portugal, sits near the shores of popular Nuns beach, just a short drive from Queenscliff’s town centre. Director Jo Youl’s mother, Lady Clarke, built the house in 1991 in collaboration with renowned Victorian architect Wayne Gillespie. Youl says she and her sister spent much of their childhoods holidaying there, but over the 10 years to 2022, the house sat unused. Her sister moved overseas and Youl set up her Flinders Island accommodation business, On Island Time – where
she has renovated houses to become luxury holiday homes. “Mum asked me if I wanted to do that with Queenscliff and I definitely agreed. I obviously love the house,” Youl says. That love beams through as soon as we drive up the garden-lined path to the grand home. Once inside, we explore the downstairs, which has three beautifully styled bedrooms, a bathroom, laundry and a large rumpus room. Our four-year-old makes a beeline for the toy cupboards under the TV, but there’s more to explore upstairs. Sweeping views of Port Phillip Bay can be seen from the expansive deck on the second floor, where we also find the comfy lounge room, a dining

table fit for a banquet and a kitchen fit for Yotam Ottolenghi. “I’ve kitted that kitchen out to have amazing lunches and amazing events in there,” Youl says. “I’ve been to so many Airbnbs where they just don’t have all the things. We love cooking and we love to know that there’s enough stuff in the kitchen.” To the third floor and ... wow. If downstairs had sweeping views, the vista from the main bedroom is pure panorama. There’s another kingsized room on the other side of the floor and both have en suites. The attention to detail in the furniture choices and decor, which Youl curated with the help of interior designer Emily Fitzgerald, is impressive. Youl has also created a range of towels and bedding specifically for Sagres under her Quoin linen brand. Everything belongs, and adds to the ambience. And did I mention the wine cellar and bar under the stairs? Youl says she can definitely see families staying here and taking advantage of the
“kids’ zone” downstairs, but the place is also perfectly tailored for a girls’ weekend away. Once we’ve explored the house, it’s time to take a wander down the private path to Nuns beach. We are in our element. As the sun begins to set, we wash off the sand under the outdoor showers while the kids jump in the al fresco bath. Nothing puts smiles on small faces like bathing outside. There’s plenty to explore in Queenscliff, and we do. There are cute shops and eateries on the main drag, including gift store Frankie Say Relax and Thai restaurant Nivana – which also does takeaway. We also head to family-friendly restaurant Basil’s Farm a short drive north, which has a garden dining area and a sandpit for the kids. But mostly, we take advantage of beautiful Sagres. On our last night we barbecue some local produce and watch the ships roll in and out of the bay. Breathe in, breathe out. Bliss. ● ● sagres.com.au

“I think we have realised that, ‘You know what, I’m not going to waste my time. I’m not going to put things off that I have wanted to do’.” GORGI COGHLAN
“We’re calling them Lunch and Learn workshops and you literally do that – come and learn and lunch with us in the stables and connect to nature,” Coghlan says. Simon, who has a passion for cooking and hospitality, is particularly interested in exploring men’s mental health through food. He wants to create a space where men can come together, cook, eat and talk about their feelings in a supportive environment. There are also plans for guest chefs to collaborate, and a garden series, where Coghlan and special guests will share simple tips and recipes. The 47-year-old believes people are more open than ever to discovering themselves and carving out time to learn how to live more fulfilling and ref lective lives.
“It really resonates with where people are at after the pandemic,” she says. “We’ve all had that opportunity for self-ref lection. “I think we have realised that, ‘You know what, I’m not going to waste my time. I’m not going to put things off that I have wanted to do.’ So, there’s a beautiful hunger for that at the moment.” Coghlan says it took six months to make the final decision to step away from her high-profile role on The Project in July 2021, but she hasn’t looked back. “I had that passion and the drive and desire, I suppose, to manifest more work and create more work from the farm,” she says. “And there was a reality that you get to a point where you get burnt out from news.
“News and presenting the news, and the energy associated with that, wasn’t aligning with my spirit or my happiness.” Bermingham Farm is named after Coghlan’s maternal grandmother, Katherine Bermingham. “She was this unbelievable human being; so compassionate, so kind and non-judgmental, that fairy-tale grandparent,” she says. “There was never judgment, it was just beautiful wisdom and incredible listening skills. “I just feel it’s her energy f lying through with that wisdom, love and compassion.” The Coghlans also own The Provincial Hotel in Ballarat and have plans to revamp the Crown Hotel, not far from the farm. Though her focus is firmly on the farm for now, it doesn’t mean we won’t see Coghlan back on our screens at some stage. “I know I’ll be doing something else in broadcasting,” she says. “It’s just waiting for that right show to come along … I’m not really one for just doing jobs and doing TV for the sake of doing TV. “But I love my media work when it has meaning in my life. I can’t wait to see what’s going to come up because I know a show is going to come up, whether I create that myself or whether it comes along my path a different way.” ●

V presenter and performer Gorgi Coghlan’s latest project is miles from the glare and glamour of the small screen and stage. More than 18 months after leaving her regular hosting gig on The Project, Coghlan is following her heart with a new venture that combines insights and passions learnt throughout her life and career. Bermingham Farm, on the outskirts of Ballarat, is not only her beloved family property but home to her new personal development, wellness and lifestyle retreat. Over the past 10 years, Coghlan, her husband, Simon, and their daughter, Molly Rose, have poured their heart and soul into the farm, creating a unique space. Their hope is that the stunning natural environment and stables will become a sanctuary where visitors can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. “I just felt this sense of calm and peace as soon as I put my foot on the property,” Coghlan says. “It’s this magical place where we want other people to come home to themselves and to heal. “My passion is, and always has been, helping other human beings, particularly women. I love working with all genders, but I do have a real affinity for helping women to be the best version of themselves.” The farm will host personal development workshops with qualified professionals, including Brene Brown-approved facilitators.
