Through 80 billion photos and counting, Google Street View gives people the power to explore the world’s roads in 360º. And while it’s helping you visit new places near and far, it’s helping the conservationists at Underwater Earth reveal the ocean to the world—increasing awareness of our changing underwater landscape and spurring action toward a global plan to save our threatened reefs.

M
elbourne is coming into its glorious best, coaxing properties onto the market along with spring’s first buds. Logistics aside (settling a new purchase before Christmas), this season is when every property has the potential to enamour a buyer; light bouncing off freshly painted walls, luxuriant orbs of hydrangeas in vases, and lawns that feel like a plush new carpet under foot. This edition contains some special homes which encapsulate all that and more. The cover property showcases the work of architect Rob Mills, with an address in one of South Yarra’s blue-ribbon streets; skip along to House of the Week, a period gem in Elwood where you’re close enough to the beach to smell the salt; and if you are shopping in the sub-$1 million bracket (be it an investment or a first home) you cannot miss our new column Good Buys. This week, we have included excellent three and four-bedroom properties, each with character – and six-figure price guides.

The consistent warmth and lush environment of the tropics are pleasing but the humidity can, we’re going to say it, put a dampener on things. Enter design and thoughtful applications of ageold traditional building practices. This modern take on a Papuan longhouse is inspired. Not only would it win a beauty contest (and it has – several architecture awards), it’s the brilliant function here that informs the stunning whole. Sitting in a typically abundant landscape, the soaring timber and double-height glass of the facade make an immediate impression. Inside, the timber faceted rooflines rise above effortlessly gorgeous interiors. But while the four bedrooms, sharp kitchen and sumptuous indoor-outdoor space of the living areas are superb, it’s the filtering of light, shade and ventilation that draws every piece of the beautiful whole together. “It’s a striking-looking home,” says Kay & Burton agent Gowan Stubbings. “There are bold design elements here … The floor plan is a stroke of genius.” LOU SWEENEY

ou could sit this classic home upon the most uninspiring landscape and it wouldn’t matter; the place is so beautiful you’d barely even notice. Now, sit it on some of Melbourne’s best real estate, on Ormond Parade across from the bay, and you have an honest-to-goodness jaw-dropper. There are so many fabulous things on show here – from the grand, formal facade, columned and curved, to the stunning original interior timber work – it’s very fine indeed. From that deep portico come into the central foyer with its divine chequerboard timber floor and ornate timber staircase being the immediately arresting features. Bank right to the main bedroom where the southern wall follows the facade and provides a set of windows that curve around to the fireplace. The decorative ceilings and fretwork are impossibly pretty, but the space is substantial too. There’s a generous walk-in wardrobe that leads to a handsome timber en suite

with views of the rear garden. The living room features dark timber floors and a stone fireplace. The standout, though, is the window seat set behind a decorative circular fretwork cut-out. At the rear are four bedrooms. And at the end of this section, a door opens onto the double garage and a bright family room. There’s also a lovely grassy terrace and a pool.
On the first level, the space stretches out under lofty ceilings to large windows with bay views. The attractive marble kitchen offers a superb anchor point and flows onto the second open-air terrace. There’s plenty of room in the floor plan for a dining area or great study spaces. Effortlessly elegant Elwood, complete with blue bay views.
In 1920, construction began and builders laid meticulously brick by brick this period beachfront home. Nearly 100 years later you can call this special residence home.

A spring ode to the crab apple
A
s we move from what has been a very cold and wet winter at Stonefields (which included the heaviest snow seen in decades), and into spring, I look forward to the blossom that really defines our spring garden – crab apples. These small trees are one of the hardiest of plants requiring very little summer irrigation and tolerating the extremes in temperatures from -5 to 45 degrees. They will grow in most parts of Australia with the exception of the far northern states with their high humidity. They are perfect for inner-city gardens given their small scale and non-aggressive root systems, providing shade and enormous appeal in their flowering.

At Stonefields we have a variety of types with the main one being Malus floribunda. These are located on the outer corners of the formal hedged rooms, where they help to break up the geometry of the corners, thus blending the garden seamlessly into the surrounding natural contours. With over 30 trees planted, the impact is mesmerising in spring – they flower profusely with intense pink buds at first, fading to the lightest of shell pink and lasting for over six weeks in flower. For me this is the best of the crab apples for anyone to plant, they require very little maintenance except for formative pruning in their early years and very little precious supplementary watering. The white garden has four high grafted Malus sargentii, one in
each corner sitting in a pillow of box hedging. These are the whitest of the crab apples and they flower later in spring with the tree covered in masses of blooms. Sadly, it is a bit of a threeweek wonder, dropping all its flowers in a shower of confetti and covering the ground in a haze of white. I bought mine as high grafts, which means they were grafted onto a clean trunk of a rootstock at about 1700 millimetres high. This allows people to walk under them and removes all the hard work of removing lower foliage and branches in their early years. They may be hard to source but are well worth the effort if pure white is your choice of colour. The other crab apple we have in the garden is Malus trilobata.
It grows into a perfect conicalshaped tree and requires very little to no pruning. Again, it’s a perfect tree for innercity gardens due to its tight, nonspreading form, so use it in spaces where you need height but not width. It also flowers in spring with small white flowers but this is not its greatest strength as the flowers are not nearly as significant as the other two crab apples. This tree comes into its own in autumn when it turns a spectacular vibrant red. There are many other types of crab apples that we don’t have at Stonefields, the most popular being Malus ioensis. This is grown extensively in Australia probably due to its reliability and profuse spring

flowering. In spring it is smothered in soft pink flowers and in autumn it has the added attraction of having a tint of scarlet red foliage. I tend not to use it as its thorny branches make pruning difficult and are a slight hazard for children. paulbangay.com

The twist through the tower at Melbourne Square will give the building a unique identity .
Melbourne Square includes six towers made up of a mix of apartment complexes, a hotel, office building and an eight-level retail precinct including a supermarket. The first two towers forming stage one of the development are adorned with pleats. The classic design motif has been embraced throughout the buildings, including the interiors by Carr Design. Melbourne Square’s towers will be connected by a green oasis designed by landscape architects at TCL.
The 3700-square-metre garden will be Southbank’s first park. TCL has given it a European flavour with piazzas and outdoor terraces designed to host events such as markets and festivals. The park will also feature a network of footpaths linking the six buildings plus a colourful diversity of native plants.
onstruction is set to start on the 64-storey Aspire Melbourne, which will house almost 600 one, two and threebedroom apartments. Designed by architects Elenberg Fraser, the high rise will grace the northern end of King Street overlooking Flagstaff Gardens. Elenberg Fraser has also designed the interiors as sanctuaries for busy city-dwellers. The apartments feature gold accents, large island benches and expansive windows to make the most of the views over Flagstaff Gardens and the CBD, and out to the bay and the Docklands. The shared facilities at Aspire Melbourne are five-star. There are private dining rooms and outdoor barbecue areas, plus swanky extras such as a ballroom, champagne conservatory, whisky parlour, indoor pool, steam room and sauna. The location will also wow potential buyers. Melbourne Central is 850 metres away and Flagstaff station is almost at the doorstep.

always have trepidation at being invited into people’s homes and asked to judge them, like I do on The Block. Unfortunately, I often have to politely skirt around the fact that, more often than not, people unwittingly make the same styling errors. Here are a few of the most common mistakes and what you can do to simply resolve them.
Making the right moves
10
DOM A IN
Bring furniture closer together in large living spaces and anchor with a large rug. Sofa, coffee table, chair and ottoman from Globe West.
The problem: Coffee tables that are too small. So often I’ll see a small or medium-sized coffee table floating a distance away from the couches, or out of reach the seating. It looks stingy.
The problem: Pushing furniture to the walls. The impulse is to create as much floor space as possible to try to create a larger looking room. Unfortunately, the opposite result is often the case.
The solution: Measure how much space you have between all your sofas and seating to mark out a rectangle or square of available space for the coffee table. You need between 400 and 500 millimetres between the edge of a sofa or chair to the edge of the coffee table. That means that if, for example, you have 2.2m x 2.2m of available open space you can ideally fit a coffee table around 1.2m x 1.2m. Most people’s instincts will say it’s too big, but this large central element is something to catch the eye, arrange engaging vignettes and is within practical reach for best everyday use.
The solution: Create zones in large rooms by bringing furniture together, anchored by a rug, art or light, or any or all of these elements. Having an unfilled area around the furniture looks like you have the luxury of space. You’ll be surprised how much bigger your room will feel by just giving your furniture some physical and visual breathing space. If you have a larger room, consider moving your sofa 600 millimetres or so away from the wall and placing a console table behind. This gives you another plane to build styling vignettes and to place lamps or tall plants, floral arrangements or sculptures, providing valuable height to create forced perspective.
The problem: Rugs that are too small. The same issue we have with coffee tables occurs with most furniture and styling items. When considering the right size, if you’re unsure then going small must be better? Wrong.
The problem: Spreading things randomly across a space. So many lovely things. So many empty spaces. So many attempts to place a thing here and a thing there so that all the lovely things you own can be seen and enjoyed. It’s a recipe for clutter.
The solution: A rug should, at least, fit under the front legs of all your lounge seating. Ideally, if you have a sofa flanked by a side table either side the rug will either allow the side tables to sit on the floor next to the rug or, more ideally, on the rug next to the arm of the sofa, but make sure side tables don’t end up half on and half off the rug. When it comes to my personal approach to rugs, as long as there is a border of visible floor around the perimeter of the room of about 400500 millimetres then the rug can never be too big.
The solution: Group your favourite things together in considered vignettes. A simple equation for a styling vignette is a stack of books, a candle, something with life like a plant or flowers, some of your favourite decor items from your travels, a lamp or a sculptural piece with height (a vase of flowers applies) all placed in front of a mirror or artwork on the wall. This simple grouping will unite your favourite pieces for best impact. Darren Palmer is a judge on Channel Nine’s The Block, Sundays at 7pm.

elebrating Australian design and creativity, The Design Files held its first awards ceremony on September 19, acknowledging winners chosen by an esteemed judging panel. With 12 categories ranging from interior to furniture design and sustainable to floral design, the awards were a clear demonstration of the level of excellence and talent across the country. The Design Files Awards’ creator Lucy Feagins says it was rewarding seeing a vision come to life. “We wanted to create an awards program that would bring together a range of diverse creative disciplines,” she says. “It’s been incredible to have so many leaders in their fields participate in the process.” The winner of the interior design category, Matt Woods Design, stood out among 81 entries with his project Perfect Storm. For judge and head of interiors at Kennedy Nolan, Adriana Hanna, it was the utilitarian approach to the project that delivered Woods the win. “They have delivered an elegantly restrained home that is perfectly tailored to [their] clients,” she says. “The sculptural and brutalist references in both materials and planning generates a unique and dynamic space that challenges conventional trends and movements.”

Perfect Storm was also a standout for Feagins. She says it’s “nothing like any other Australian interior”. “It’s bold and impactful, unapologetic in its style,” she says. “Originality was a key criteria for the judges, and this project really does encapsulates that sense of uniqueness.” Taking out the top spot in residential architecture were Brisbane-based architects Vokes and Peters with their project Subiaco House. A family home designed around a set of interconnected rooms, Subiaco House boasts a private, yet open living space.
Albert Mo, director of Architects Eat and judge of the category, said embracing outdoor living was part of why Vokes and Peters stood out. “The success of the project lies in its ability to provide both privacy for the home owners and connection to the surrounding community,” he says. “A shoutout also to the client for embracing this quality, allowing Vokes and Peters to create this generous and lyrical piece of residential architecture, while remaining respectful to the historic neighbourhood aesthetic.” For Mo, the home is an example of Australian living and architecture working hand-in-hand. “We [architects] always find ways to break down the physical barriers to allow passage of light and air, and in the case of Subiaco House, the interplay between public and private as well,” he says. “Of course there’s also the matter of lifestyle choice – embracing the outdoor living, extending the internal living space outward and vice-versa, which is so very Australian.” Overall, Feagins says the entrants told a “broader story” about what’s happening in contemporary Australian culture. “Creativity pushes creative culture forward, and creative projects of all kinds are such an important contribution to society,” she says. “We want this program to celebrate and remind people of that.”

A sunny corner of the kitchen. The Yoke
igger Hall moved into this 1880s Prahran East property in 2012, and spent the following six months renovating the home. Hall says she took her time sourcing salvaged materials for the building, including old pub doors, a church altar rail and tram light fittings. It seems appropriate that the celebrated interior designer and founder of Nine Muses Textiles, who has spent a lifetime travelling the world to source materials and inspiration, should renovate her house with the same passion and energy. “I love the hunt, and pulling the pieces together, I feel it creates a relaxed and eclectic mix,” she says. These lovingly sourced objects sit alongside a large collection of old family paintings and furniture that Hall has inherited. Her great-grandfather was the esteemed painter Lindsay Bernard Hall, the longest-serving director of the National Gallery of Victoria. The family legacy is evident throughout the house.
“Everything has a comfortable patina, like diving back into an old book, with so many chapters to the room,” she says. Hall says her home provides a cocooning sense of being wrapped up in both of her great-grandfathers’ work. (Her other great-grandfather was also an artist of note, Donald Commons. What a family!) The property mixes classic, playful and artistic aesthetics, with travelling flair thrown in for good measure. “Most visitors are so surprised when they first step into the space, often claiming it is a Paris atelier,” Hall says. The interiors are directly influenced by Hall’s travels to artists’ homes around the globe, including William Morris’ Kelmscott and Monet’s home. “They all have a sense of freedom in their interiors, a place of one’s own, where authenticity is key,” she says. “I do feel I have achieved the same in the most natural sense; it is not contrived.” Hall’s love of tapestries and textiles is evident, as varied textures and colours bring richness to the home. “To live with treasures and memories is so important,” she says. “It traces our life in a tapestry, threading together family history, treasures and modern-day living.”

t’s only natural that an age-old building would have many stories to tell and, when the stars align, these structures are able to come together with folks who are willing to peel back the layers of yesteryear, transforming them into something new, all the while ensuring that their stories are able to live on. Such was the fortune of Tasmania’s new boutique accommodation, Ship Inn Stanley. Nestled within the historic town of Stanley, on Tasmania’s wild northwest coast – a region that calls itself “The Edge of the World” – Ship Inn Stanley was built in 1849, and, although this storytelling guest house has been given a new lease of life, its very heartbeat has been borrowed from the past, honouring all of its previous personas. For the most part, the structure traded as a seaside inn for 150 years. After the inn closed and fell into disrepair in the 1970s, a local family turned it into their private home before it was once again reborn when current owners Kerrie and Alastair Houston saw the potential in the building as a revitalised guesthouse. Charmed by its heritage appeal and the potential for running a family business, the Houston family relocated from Hobart. From day dot, a team of design and styling experts were called in, including Georgie Rayner of Georgeous Occasions and Claire Gilbert, who helped manage the project, along with the design and styling magic of Lynda Gardener and Belle Hemming of Inside Story.

DESIGN BRIEF B y E LIZ AB E TH CL ARKE
Hawthorn House by Edition Office is a home where ‘the garden is as important as the
BEN HOSKING
architecture’.
Going to ground
A
pair of distinctive arched concrete shrouds provided a simple and stylish solution for a family of four craving privacy as well as a connection to the outdoors. Hawthorn House, the recipient of numerous honours including a shortlisting for the AR House Awards
2019, effortlessly achieves both. The concrete shrouds provide not only solace and privacy, but offer the internal living spaces views and access to the lush gardens that surround the home on all sides. “On the ground floor, the concrete shrouds provide clear connectivity
with the outside landscape and a sense of unexpected lightness, while concealing the neighbouring context,” says Aaron Roberts from Melbourne architecture studio Edition Office. “Upstairs, the firstfloor sleeping and bathing spaces are concealed behind the apparently solid and windowless upper half of the shrouds.” The building employs a purposefully restrained material palette from the ground up, with flooring executed in stunning burnished concrete, blackbutt timber floorboards and woollen carpets. The concrete walls are constructed using recycled Oregon timber boards, and the ceilings, doors and joinery are crafted using blackbutt timber that helps impart warmth while softening and breaking the flow of concrete. So too does the garden. “This property is unique given the incredible lemon-scented gum in the front centre of the property and the two established neighbours’ trees towards the rear – a large peppercorn and an oak,” explains Roberts, who says the garden played a critical part of the design process. “The large, established trees on the site allowed us to consider a more internal and intimate experience for the upstairs sleeping and bathing
spaces, with no apparent windows to the perimeter,” Roberts says. “Again, the shrouds create courtyards full of plants with glazed walls which allow views of the tree canopies and sky rather than the surrounding suburban context.” Hawthorn House boasts plentiful natural light. The passive solar design principles allow winter sun to flood deep into each living space. The summer sun is handled efficiently thanks to cross-ventilation and smart material choices. “The custom hot-dipped galvanised steel window frame details work in unison with technically advanced Viridian ‘Lightbridge’ double glazing,” says Roberts. “This provides a high-quality thermal envelope to the almost entirely glazed groundfloor spaces of the home.” Briefed to design a home that would age gracefully, Roberts says all are happy with the end result. “We’re looking forward to watching how the project evolves over time as the gardens fully mature and bring full circle our expectations of the experiential qualities of the house. This is a home where the garden is as important as the architecture in delivering those qualities.” edition-office.com

Adnate has painted a 25-storey mega-mural on a wall of the hotel, making it one of the largest in the world. The Melbourne-born and -based artist, who discovered a love of graffiti at 13 chasing tags along the Hurstbridge line, now calls Thornbury home. He lives in a corner weatherboard home with his wife Jess (an artist, jeweller and yoga instructor) and their one-year-old son Romeo Zephyr. A photograph of the couple meeting the Dalai Lama sits in a frame while a large African bull skull hovers above the dining table – they’ve nicknamed him Harry. scot Vale becomes the centre of Melbourne at this time of year, as it has done for a brief period in September and October for the past 171 years. The Royal Melbourne Show might now be better known for show bags, carnival rides and fried things on sticks than cows, woodchopping and the pursuit of the world’s fluffiest sponge cake, but it brings an estimated half a million people onto the streets of Ascot Vale, many of them looking in vain for a carpark.
These 11 days also signal the dusting off of the Showgrounds station on the Flemington Racecourse line, which is kept in mothballs for most of the year. It’s not just the Show that lures people to these 19 hectares of civic and mercantile space. The Royal Melbourne Showgrounds on Epsom Road, hugging the boundary of Ascot Vale and Kensington, are a hub known to generations of Melburnians for trade shows, music events and the dreaded home of year 12 exams.
Feeling lost? Look for the “Pie in the Sky”, the giant elevated pie (formerly branded Four’n’Twenty) that was built in 1977, achieved heritage status in 1999 and has reunited countless families separated by crowds and sugar rushes. So much history, but Ascot Vale is also a forward-thinking little suburb. A former car yard on Mt Alexander Road has been turned into The Ascot Lot and Food Truck Park, bringing the cred to postcode 3032. Its pro-kids and dogs policy is
music to the ears of the area’s young families. “There’s a really broad demographic,” says Raine & Horne director George Errichiello. “It’s definitely a lovely family orientated location with great primary schools.” The broad demographic is matched by a range of housing, from onebedroom units to $3 million houses occupying the high ground on huge blocks, the best with magnificent views of the city skyline.
