INDEX What to see this Weekend p6
Note from the editor
W
hen you are a child, there is little else around the house that you care about more than having your own bedroom, and a backyard swimming pool. That summertime sprint from the back patio, springing over hot concrete, to bomb into a pebble-lined kidney-shaped pool, is the ritualistic dance of Aussie childhood. Anyone at school who had a pool at home was the epitome of cool, which cancelled me out indefinitely, and also made their house the most highly-sought ticket in the neighbourhood. In this week’s New Living cover story, we explore the best pool designs that marry its two purposes – relaxation, and social hub of the home. In Gardening, Byron Smith explains how to start a herb patch that will quickly yield tasty, fragrant results, and in our residential section, we explore an East Melbourne manor which is part of the oldest-remaining terrace row in Melbourne, among many market highlights.

With so many casual-cool Hamptons homes
dotted along the eastern seaboard, it’s easy to forget there are other flavours of coastal style. High-octane glamour is the order of the day at this circa 1910 residence, courtesy of an upmarket redesign by Weir Phillips Architects. The result is a lavish beach house, where sparkling ocean views vie for attention with sumptuous interiors. There’s time for drama and moments of quiet in the palette of charcoal, crisp white and pale grey, with blond herringbone timber floors, gold chandeliers and exposed brick. The original chauffeur’s quarters have been converted into a self-contained, dual-level studio apartment, bringing the bedroom count to five. Some of the best views in the house are reserved for the balcony off the top-floor main suite. A north-east-facing al fresco area, rear courtyard and wine cellar set the stage for long summer evenings with friends. Monika Tu and Jad Khattar of Black Diamondz Property Concierge have the listing for sale with a closing date of December 6. ELICIA MURRAY

A “hands-on” couple with a design background and, it must be noted, a perfectionist approach, has renovated this archetypal Carlton North terrace with exemplary contemporary styling. A standard bedroom-bedroombathroom layout is expanded with a lightwell, large open-plan living area, garage with bifold-door opening and upper-floor main bedroom with en suite plus study. A dramatic void and skylights above the all-white kitchen draw in remarkable light. “It’s among traditional Victorian terraces in one of the better streets near Rathdowne village,” the agent says. With a “spare-no-expense” mentality, the owner of this one-of-a-pair townhouse redid its facade and then redesigned and rebuilt all behind it. The just-completed result is high end yet decidedly funky. Its two levels wrap a secluded decked courtyard that forms a natural extension of the casual living zone. With the kitchen gas-strut servery window up, host and guests have an easy connection. “It’s lock-up-and-leave, so you can head off on your European travels without a worry,” the agent says. The White Cottage, as this two-storey shingle-roofed period house by Geelong-born architect Geoffrey Sommers has been dubbed, is pure Toorak and pure English charm. It is set well back in perfumed Englishstyle gardens with the recent addition in the north-facing rear of a pool and paved terrace, reached via the dining area and all three downstairs living rooms. “It’s very elegant yet relaxed,” the agent says. “It has broad appeal, including Toorak entry level for a young family who wants a pool.” Auction: 1pm, November 23 Agent: Kay & Burton, Michael Armstrong 0407 063 263

ndividuality. How good is it? And how rare is a true original? This little Middle Park cottage has flair to burn and an inspired floor plan that creates space out of what seems like thin air. The classic facade is a fine thing with a lace-work verandah and leadlight fans framing the front door. Enter and things move from the period to the progressive as you turn left into the first of two downstairs bedrooms. In here, it’s pink and happily, boldly so. The window over the verandah brings in just enough light to make it glow. Head up the hall to the central bathroom where pink and green tiles are interspersed with inlays of Roy Lichtenstein’s comic strip pop art. Stretching up to the first level like some sort of luminous modern art piece is the bright yellow metal stair. The open tread lets the light play through the slats. Just as good though is the floor-toceiling lightwell punching out to the north edge to provide illumination

and an attractive bamboo garden that serves to bring depth and space. Follow the terrazzo flooring all the way to the living and dining areas. The space narrows to form the attractive galley-style kitchen with handsome olive-toned cabinetry and a cool looking brass benchtop. Full-size banded windows open up the kitchen to the ivy/pebble/palm treed north-facing courtyard. An
automatic horizontal awning can roll out to offer what’s almost another outdoor “room”. Ascend those yellow stairs to the main bedroom where a large skylight illuminates the space with a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite. The main floor here is a fabulous organic material called ReCover that looks the smooth goods and completes a home of uncommon originality and style.

energy,” says Kennedy. “Our goal is to make the pool appear more than just a blue rectangle surrounded by a fence.” Kennedy Nolan achieved this by integrating a circular pool at their Caroline House residence. The pool is positioned in a central courtyard in the middle of the property where the house itself wraps around it.

n summer it’s best to follow three simple rules: keep hydrated, wear sunscreen and find a friend with a pool. Or alternatively, you might be the friend with the pool, in which case be prepared for a swarm of incoming out-of-the-blue texts on sunny days. There’s no denying Australia’s relationship with the pool runs deep. Roy Morgan’s 2018 data indicates 2.7 million Australians live in a home with a private pool. “Given our climate and proximity to the coast, it seems very much part of the broader Australian psyche to have this innate desire to be close to water,” says landscape architect Kate Patterson of Kate Patterson Landscapes. Specialising in pool design that integrates holistically with its landscape, Patterson suggests one of the pool’s main appeals is its ability to offer meaningful social connection. “It’s a wonderful way to bring people together, everyone just forgets their inhibitions.” Similarly, Patrick Kennedy, principal architect at Kennedy Nolan, views the pool as having an important social and cultural position in Australia. “Our relationship to the pool has been explored a lot recently and particularly at the Australian Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Biennale, which looked historically at public pools to sea baths and the role they have in the outback to the pool’s social and political role in shaping equality for women and breaking down segregation.” For Kennedy and Patterson, designing pools is not just about aesthetics. It’s about creating a lifestyle that can tether being a restorative oasis to a thriving social hub. It’s also about finding ways the pool can serve the home and landscape when it’s not summer. “We look at how we can amplify a pool’s presence and how it can have a role throughout the year because they take up a lot of space and use a lot of
“We wanted the pool to have a presence which was more than just a swimming pool, and because it’s in the middle of the house you see it every day of the year, every time of the day,” Kennedy says. The pool also serves as a decorative water feature when it’s not being used. “We wanted it to, at times, be reflective of light and when the water is still to reflect a mirror image of the house.” The colour of pool tiles also plays an impact in how light reflects and gives water context to its surrounds.

we used for our Elwood pool, the water tends to stay like that and dominate.” To accomplish a pale blue look, white tiles are needed – it’s a complex alchemy. For the same Elwood residence, Patterson designed a rectangular pool (built by East Coast Pools) that directly backs onto the rear of a living room designed by the home’s architects Pipkorn Kilpatrick, allowing the owners to entertain inside and outside simultaneously. “A good pool for us is one that sits happily in its surrounds and ties in with the architecture and landscape,” says architect Jane Kilpatrick of Pipkorn Kilpatrick, who has also

and ties in with the architecture and landscape.”
There’s been an increased shift towards tiles that reflect a more moody river and ocean-like quality of water opposed to the traditional bright blue found at the local public swimming pool. “It’s quite tricky with pool tiles because you can’t see what the colour of the water will look like from the tile, it’s how the water and tile together reflect light,” Kennedy says. Patterson similarly has noticed a shift towards tiles that serve more compatibly with the landscape, using more blue, green and grey tiles in recent pool designs. “If you choose a stronger tile colour, such as the green
noticed a heightened demand for natural and living water pools. Wayne Zwar of Natural Swimming Pools Australia correlates the demand with people prioritising their wellbeing – there’s an obvious benefit to swimming in naturally filtered water. “If you’ve ever swum in a natural lake or freshwater river, you’ll know there’s nothing quite like the experience of swimming in living water,” he says. “Our pool water is living and needs a type of biofilm to work, algae isn’t a bad term in our sphere but chlorine is.” Kennedy Nolan worked with Natural Swimming Pools Australia to create a living water pool for their Fairfield residential project. The brief was for the pool to embrace its proximity to the Yarra River and integrate plant life and living water to replicate swimming in one of nature’s glorious waterholes. Again, a circular design was the shape of choice. “There’s a timeless quality to a circle and they’re great in terms of composition because they’re multi-directional,” says Kennedy.

Its inner-city location combined with its green credentials make it a tightly held suburb. services and home automation technology – modern must-haves. The homes’ design has been influenced by Alphington’s natural attractions including Yarra Bend Park and the site’s industrial heritage, says Steve Williams, Caydon sales and marketing director. “We’ve taken many design cues from the local area, Alphington’s leafy surrounds and the nearby Yarra River,” he says. “And Home by Caydon has been designed to respect and complement these elements in a number of ways. “We have also included subtle references to paper, texture and industry within the building’s design,
which can be seen most prominently on the building’s facade. “In time, Home by Caydon will represent a new landmark for the area, so we want this building to facilitate tranquillity and neighbourhood spirit while meaningfully integrating the site’s important historic elements.” Communal ares include gardens, a sky deck, rooftop pool and open-air cinema, guest rooms, barbecue facilities, a playground, dog run, Pilates pavilion and lounge.
ine cellars may not win over off-the-plan buyers, but they certainly add a touch of sophistication. At the Beckworth in Glen Iris, residents will share a communal cellar room with individual, lockable cabinets where they can store their wine collection. There are 18 apartments at the Tooronga Road development and each is more akin to a mini-mansion than an apartment. Created by architects at Telha Clarke and interior designers at Studio Tate, the residences are minimal in style with a warmth achieved through timber joinery and large light-filled spaces. Each home is designed to be unique so residents can identify their homes as they walk down the street or drive home at night. Landscape architects at John Patrick have designed lush surrounds to the gardens and terraces befitting of the “leafy inner-east”. DESIGN BRIEF B y E LIZ AB E TH CL ARKE
Birds of paradise
JONATHAN VAN DER KNAAP
I
The palette of pinks and greys was inspired by Leila Jeffrey’s 2012 galah portrait, Queenie.
t takes chutzpah to draw inspiration from a bird, but Queenie, an Adelaidean gem, does just that. A heady mix of glamour and colour, the semi-detached Victorian sandstone cottage was reimagined as a contemporary residence, inspired by the parkland it faces and its noisy occupants – birds. “The abundant birdlife was a trigger for the palette of pinks and greys, captured perfectly in Leila Jeffrey’s 2012 galah portrait, Queenie,” says creative director Sonia Simpfendorfer, of Nexus Designs. Simpfendorfer was originally briefed to prepare Queenie, sunbleached a dusty pink and owned by the same family for years, for sale.
“As the project progressed, Queenie’s potential to be something really lovely became apparent and the brief changed to making it a compact city haven,” she says. She made simple interventions to ensure seamless flow and generous spaces. At the front of the house is the main bedroom with french doors, and a series of rooms off the hall. The living room flows through to the kitchen and laundry, and at the back is a sunroom that opens out onto a vine-covered outdoor dining space. “When you open the front door there is a big breathe-out sense of ‘I’m home’,” she says. “Space planning, colour, lighting, furniture, and custom joinery were meticulously planned to create that feeling.”

To make the most of Queenie’s sunny disposition, Simpfendorfer fixed and tinted the floorboards (galah pink, of course), repurposed pre-loved modern furniture and lighting, integrated historic family pieces, contemporary Australian art, European furniture and contemporary statement pieces. She didn’t shy away from using plain expanses, like white walls, to provide calming counterpoints to more extravagant moments. “Not every client is going to say yes to painting floorboards a customised pink, but this one did,” she says.
“The ultramarine elements, inspired by her early Ken Done artwork, were used unexpectedly on the inside of a custom wardrobe, as well as navigation. At the end of the long hallway there is a beacon of blue from a repainted heirloom chest of drawers leading you forward.” The end result is Queenie, a home so warm and beautiful the family decided to keep her. “Queenie’s family runs on strength and love and I think that shows in the design response too,” says Simpfendorfer. nexusdesigns.com.au

hen Katie Brannaghan and husband Ian purchased this home in April 2017, they were met with slight shock at how much work needed to be done. The previous owners were hoarders, so a large-scale clean was necessary. But as these surface works were undertaken, Brannaghan realised how many ’90s and early 2000s renovations had altered the midcentury space. “We wanted it to look similar to what it would have originally looked like, back in circa ’ 73,” she says. The incredible home was originally designed by Karl Fender, who was just 23 when he took on this job for an eccentric local. (Things worked out pretty well for the architect wunderkind – he’s now one half of the iconic firm Fender Katsalidis). Brannaghan tried to research the property, but was met with dead ends, until one day she posted about it on Instagram. “I tagged Karl in one of the pictures, and to my delight he responded!”
She invited the architect to come and visit and he brought along his original hand-drawn plans and plenty of stories. “Much to our relief and joy, he was very happy with what we’d done to the house,” she says. The Fender-approved renovations are extensive, and have brought the house back to life, by gently drawing on the past. Tiles from the ’90s were retro-updated with ’ 70s-style terrazzo around the pool, and original-era-appropriate green carpet was introduced, with guests now assuming it is original. Beyond these aesthetic features, the kitchen was a space that required a massive overhaul, not least because it was about to fall through the floor. “It was a death trap!” Brannaghan says. Other essential renovations included getting rid of asbestos, replacing termite-riddled floors and walls, introducing a hydronic heating and cooling system, rendering the pool, installing solar panels, landscaping, building a woodshed, and bringing in a septic tank. Inside, the renovations look forward by looking back. Brannaghan says: ‘It feels like you could have stepped back into the ’ 70s when you walk through the door.” The original wood-panelled walls and high ceilings create a

Hero the past Homes from the 1950s, ’60s and even the ’70s are enjoying an extended moment in the spotlight right now. They are coveted for their strong designs, robust construction, generous floor plans, and natural light. But there’s no denying that many of these homes require sensitive updating. t’s the unshowy jewel in the crown of the City of Whitehorse: a quiet, confident suburb where money lives but doesn’t generally choose to shout about it – except, perhaps, through the cash-splashing renovations lurking behind welltended classic facades and manicured gardens. You can leave it to Box Hill proper to conjure the hawker market excitement of a mini-Hong Kong, or to Surrey Hills for the statement homes with flashy cars parked in the
driveways. Mont Albert owes its charms to its elevated position (the other half of its name is supposedly a hat-tipping colonial tribute to Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert). You won’t find too much in the way of development in postcode 3127. What has been built in the name of multi-residential living is clustered in discrete central areas with a finely-honed degree of sympathy to the existing built environment. There are serene streetscapes of
classic Victorian and Edwardian homes on ample family-sized blocks, with notable representatives of the Queen Anne and art deco era. Only 4840 people lived in Mont Albert at the 2016 census. They’re the beneficiaries of a small, villagelike shopping centre at Hamilton Street, close to the suburb’s station (travel time to Flinders Street Station, 12 kilometres to the west, in the morning peak: around 25 minutes, much longer if you ride the snail’s-pace 109 tram along
Whitehorse Road). Restaurants such as the Italian Cantina Centrale, the French Bistrologie, a cluster of cafes and a quiver of hair and nail salons speak to the suburb’s pressing matters. Being so close to Melbourne’s alternative civic centre has plenty of other advantages. Box Hill Hospital is just across the Elgar Road eastern boundary and the vibrant restaurant and fresh food scene around Box Hill Station is easily walkable, too.

Welcome to the jungle accessed via sliding glass windows and doors with timber shutters. Some of the lodges also feature a mezzanine, or “tapanco”, containing a sleeping loft and meditation space. The hotel’s organic ethos is evident in the common areas, used for wellness workshops, along with the dining space where wholesome meals are served, and the yoga pavilion with its slatted wood screens, peacefully positioned over the pool, offering daily yoga classes. Perhaps the most endearing example of the hotel’s intention to conserve the natural beauty of its site are the two old zapote trees that were lovingly preserved and act as the centrepiece for the pool. Jungle Keva hosts a range of retreats and seminars covering varied interests from yoga to writing, history to cooking. Guests are encouraged to bask in the stillness of this sanctuary, with the option to explore the local area. lending beautifully with its natural surrounds and rising between the trees, Jungle Keva is a new environmentallyfriendly boutique hotel in Tulum, Mexico. The vision – inspired by the hotel’s owner Kendall Inman – was to purchase a 2000-square-metre plot of land in the jungle, preserve 70 per cent of its existing vegetation and build a tropical oasis surrounded by nature. Local architecture firm Jaque Studio took its cues directly from Tulum’s spectacular serene spirit, creating a refined palette that mirrors the hotel’s rich landscape. This was achieved by clean lines, local materials, as well as low maintenance and natural textures – all resulting in the project’s sustainable build and minimalist design. That being so, Jungle Keva fosters a quaint, village-like atmosphere, where five close-knit lodges are scattered within the picturesque plot, all nestled among cascading trees and shadowy stone paths. Bringing the outdoors in, each airy and open-plan lodge has a private indoor-outdoor bathroom, as well as a terrace, complete with a hammock that looks out onto lush foliage,

WORKING FROM HOME TIP I make sure to schedule a lunch or dinner otherwise the weeks can just blur into one. I am energised by spending time with people, so I try to prioritise those things.
I’ll do a quick tidy and organise the desk space before settling into work at around 10am. I do bookkeeping and admin in the morning because I am at my sharpest. To keep track of tasks, I use an app called TeuxDeux. Midday
Morning
I get up at around 7am and take the dog for a walk and come back for breakfast at home. After finishing up with the pop-up store, it took me some time to readjust and realise I could take a minute in the morning to go for a walk or meditate, I didn’t have to just get up and go.
I can get so obsessed with what I’m working on that an hour just flies by, so I have really made a point of stopping, standing up, going outside, going upstairs, making lunch, and actually getting away from the computer. It’s really important for me to take short breaks during the day. You get a lot more out of taking a minute and giving your eyes a rest.
ANNETTE O’BRIEN
hen you love what you do, as is the case for designer and artist Georgia Perry, it can be difficult to draw a line between life and work. “When you work for yourself, you don’t want to rest on your laurels, so I am always thinking of new ideas, products to create, and ways to connect with people.” Perry has been working for herself for six years, including a one-year stint in her own pop-up retail store, KIOSK in Fitzroy. Since making the decision to return to freelancing, she’s focusing on learning to enjoy the moment. “I’m trying not to get too far ahead of myself, otherwise a year flies by and I haven’t even stopped to reflect,” she says. As Perry reminds us, everything is a work in progress. “No day is perfect and nothing is a failure unless you didn’t learn from it.”
Afternoon
Bedtime
After lunch is usually reserved for the creative work. If I have illustrations due or commissions, I allocate studio time for that.
I love an essential oil and a hot shower before bed, it helps get me out of the work zone and wind down. I also try and do a bit of stretching. I’ll read on my Kindle and get to sleep by around 10pm.
Evening
I never used to give myself an end time for my work day. The day shift would finish at five, I’d have dinner, and then start the night shift. Now, I will finish at five and take the dog for another walk. It is a really good way to bookend the day, get some air in my lungs and switch off.

GARDENING B y BYRO N SMITH
The easiest way to grow herbs
Basil, parsley, coriander, dill
They can all grow to about a metre, so I tend to use them aesthetically until it’s winter when I dig up the rhizomes to eat, dividing and leaving enough to grow back in spring. Your rhizomes will lay dormant in winter, and will prefer a sheltered, sunny position with a few good waters a week in the warmer months.
These “soft” herbs need more water than their “hardier” Mediterranean friends. They love liquid fertiliser fortnightly and prefer to be protected from the wind. Grow basil or parsley from a single seedling or scatter a few coriander or dill seeds covered with five millimetres of soil. If they’re in fullsun positions, water daily.
Common mint, spearmint, peppermint
Thyme, rosemary, bay leaf, sage
Top tips
I never water these “hard” Mediterranean guys if they’re in the ground, but if they’re in pots (with good drainage and no saucers), I’d give them a drink once a week or so – these herbs can take a bit of wind, salt and full sun. They’re best bought as small plants rather than seeds or seedlings. I saw rosemary growing out of a crack in limestone on a sunny mountain side in Italy recently, I cut some off and put it with dinner. Thinking about a plant’s natural landscape helps you provide similar conditions.
Rocket, lemon sorrel, red-veined sorrel These leafy herbs can be grown in less sun and watered a few times a week. Pick the leaves as needed and use a fortnightly organic liquid fertiliser to promote fresh new growth that’s a bit softer for eating.
Turmeric, ginger, galangal, lemongrass Try organic turmeric, ginger or galangal rhizomes (the root) from your local market and plant 100 millimetres into soil.
You have many options with the mint cultivars, but these are my favourites. They can take lots of water in summer, which prevents them from going woody, and will take over a garden if not kept in a pot. Liquid feed fortnightly and use some organic Dipel spray if you find caterpillars.
Consider growing conditions to get the most out of your herbs. ■ Bigger pots will mean deeper roots and more water-holding capacity, so you can give your herbs a deep water then go away for a few days. ■ Use premium potting mix only. It’s not all just “dirt” in a bag at various prices. The bag should have the red and white Australian Standard “Premium” logo on the front. The $6 potting mix or compost is akin to sawdust and dries out by 9am on a hot day. To improve the quality of your store-bought mix, add compost or worm castings and then top with light mulch (sugar cane or pea straw). ■ Sun, and lots of it, is the ultimate ingredient here. More than six hours a day is ideal. Most herbs will stay stunted and slow-growing in fewer daylight hours, so give your herbs a northern aspect where they can collect more rays each day.

Garlic & parsley butter Ingredients
¼ cup finely chopped parsley
Makes ½ cup / 1 stick
2 garlic cloves minced
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted
1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
butter, softened to room temperature
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Method
1. In a small bowl, combine all ingredients. Mix well until herbs are distributed evenly.
2. Spread a large piece of baking paper onto your kitchen bench. Place the butter mixture in the center of the wrap and shape it as best you can into a log.
3. Tightly wrap the log with the baking paper and secure the ends tightly with twine or twist ties. Roll the log back and forth in the paper wrap to create a compact, even log.
4. Chill in refrigerator until firm, it should take about 1-2 hours. Will keep in refrigerator for about 2
