What I love This seems like Tuscany, but it’s a slice of Australian paradise. The exquisite Stephen Akehurst-designed estate, with vistas from the main rooms, sits on 4.8 hectares of verdant coastal land. The property includes an indoor pool, cellar and terraces on which to enjoy a local wine. Michelle Skoglund from Aqua Real Estate is managing the listing.

What to see this Weekend p6
Note from the editor
D
ressing the Christmas tree this year involved handing all creative control to my excited fouryear-old niece; as such, with its wobbly star atop, it looks like the adults drank a vat of mulled wine before throwing about some tinsel and baubles. We love it all the same. But if you want your Christmas decorations to be more polished, and themed to suit a particular style this season, you’ll adore our guide to dressing the tree and table from some of Australia’s top stylists. Flip to New Living for inspiration and tips. On the residential cover this week is a Toorak trophy residence with few peers on the Melbourne market. James Bond would feel right at home here, with its subterranean garage and elegant European finesse. In Good Buys, highlighting the sub-$1 million market, The Block’s Bianca Chatfield (a former champion netballer) is offering a Kew apartment that carries her signature flair.

Falling in love with this Boston ivy-clad converted stables on a large block changed the course of interior designer Jane Charlwood’s life; 12 years later, after refurbishing the unusual bayside property and its established gardens, she’s letting it go to spend more time in France. “There’s a kind of gritty streetscape,” she says, “then you come into an incredible oasis.” Her contemporary European styling blends old and new. She retained original handmade bricks in the huge living area while installing a new fireplace and windows. Expressions of interest Agent: Marshall White, Oliver Bruce 0409 856 599

hile all the world is buzzing along, Toorak is quiet as can be. Inside the confines of the blue-ribbon ’burb it feels like another world. That’s probably because it is. There’s but a handful of properties in this Ottawa Road cul-de-sac but oh, what properties they are. There’s some whimsy in the Frenchstyle here – refurbished by designer Fiona Lynch – to go with the grandeur conferred by the mini avenue of red oak trees standing as handsome sentinels along the white pebbled forecourt. On closer inspection, it turns out a section lifts up, James Bond-style, so you can drive your Aston Martin into the subterranean garage. Off the entry to the left a sitting room is anchored by a most impressive hearth and underfoot glorious chocolate-toned parquetry floors add to the substantial feel. The spacious dining room sits across the way and the entire space has six sets of floor-to-ceiling shuttered french doors offering all

manner of lovely aspects. The central section of the home is a circular apse that rises through the first level to the dome above. A powder room sits off the curve and opposite, stairs take you to that cavernous garage. A break to the left of the circle reveals the beautiful living room with bifold doors that open onto the rear terrace and pool. Similarly, on the

Flowing back from here, and accessing the pool and terrace as well, is another urbane dining space. Upstairs, are three bedrooms and a study, as well as a magnificent bathroom with a free-standing stone bath the impressive centrepiece.

etween prepping the pudding and navigating the party circuit, the list of yuletide do’s can suddenly feel, well, undoable. From trimming the tree to setting the dining table, ensuring your home is merry, bright and chic can feel almost overwhelming. We asked industry insiders for their ideas for decking your halls in style.
“I love to play with scale and height,” says colour and paint expert Annie Sloan. “It keeps the eye moving throughout a room and makes the most of vertical and horizontal spaces.” A vast and glorious Christmas tree ticks this box, but other festive elements and how they are placed are key to creating visual impact. “Place presents and candles around the room at different levels, not just on the floor or tables,” says Sloan. “Maybe a bar stool with a gilded wreath, or baubles hanging from the ceiling. There are so many possibilities.” A clever use of colour also has the power to transform a room, draw the eye, and excite the senses. “With your Christmas colour scheme, make sure the brightest colours are spread out,” says Sloan. Designer Kelly Searl from Pony Rider, takes a simple approach to her Christmas styling, and agrees that uniformity throughout is essential. “I prefer a pared-back but consistent approach,” she says. “I like

to cluster various-sized white candles together, and tie in my wrapping, which might be left-over textiles and jute or vintage comic book pages with herringbone ribbon. Anything is the go, so long as the theming is strong.” For Brian Sweeney from Perrotts Florist, nothing says Christmas like flowers. “As always, they make a house feel like home, and at Christmas they inject warmth and a true feeling of festivity,” he says.

“I love going to town on the table,” says interior designer Lisa Burdus. “I use beautiful plates, glassware and silver, as well as lots of candles and fairy lights down the middle of the table amid lush foliage.” Interior stylist Jason Grant agrees, and says the Australian summer and nature are always his inspiration. “It’s about creating a setting that reflects your style,” he says. “For me it’s the ocean, bush and beach, so I like a muted palette of natural tones with greens and blue. I never worry about everything on the table matching – I take a more organic approach. It’s about using all those special pieces.” Designer Nina Maya agrees, and says her approach blends a strong colour theme and traditional decor, for a warm, yet sumptuous, vibe. “My floral installation is always complemented by candles, statement crockery, beautiful napkins, place cards, bonbons and little treats.”
For Maya, the Christmas tree is a serious affair. “Coming from a European background, my father puts a lot of effort in,” she says. “He hand sculpts a new tree each year out of several trees to ensure each layer has perfectly symmetrical branches to support 24 wax candles and hundreds of crystal glass and porcelain decorations. Some have been in the family for over 100 years.” Searl also loves the nostalgia that comes with Christmas, and says it should start with the tree. “The Christmas tree is a family ritual,” she says. “It brings with it a sense of occasion as ornaments are rediscovered along with all those precious memories. It’s such a special time.” When it comes to choosing a tree, Searl likes to keep it real. “It’s important to keep it close to nature,” she says. “I like a tree in a pot that is still growing. Its shape, whether it is small, tall, big or bushy, should be determined by the space it will take up. Too large a tree in a small room looks strange, so I always think in thirds and leave the last third between the ceiling and the very tip of the tree.” Ensure the tree’s backdrop is clean and there is ample space for the family to gather beneath it. “Your tree should also have access to natural light and be easy to water,” she says. When trimming the tree, keep it personal and devise your own theme. “Decorate with objects that mean something to you,” Searl says. “It could even be feathers or bunting you have made.” Sloan suggests gathering the family together and customising your decorations. “It’s a therapeutic exercise and one you can do with all ages,” she says. “I love DIY this time of year because you can re-use old decorations or secondhand ones, and minimise waste and environmental impact.”

“Working in Armadale, we always wanted the integration of art in the project because it’s what this part of Armadale is synonymous with in representing young artists, emerging artists, but also integrating art into projects,” says Chris McCue, Carr’s director of architecture. “It was a great opportunity that our client was really supportive of.” The result of the artistic fusion is a framed facade with a grid pattern that gradually steps back from the street. of the building, visible from the lobby, makes for a dramatic centrepiece. Into this soaring space are 30 swallows, handcrafted by Highfield using a variety of materials including plywood and metal. The birds appear to be swooping and gliding thanks to their positioning at varying degrees and angles, all with wings spread. The theme of bird-like freedom continues throughout the building, where spaciously-sized apartments are accompanied by large terraces.
What’s more, the two penthouses enjoy their own rooftop pools and the majority of the apartments at 835 High are spoilt with city views. These views will be soaked up thanks to floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors and double-glazed windows. The interiors are also highlighted with natural stone in the kitchen and living spaces.

My passe picks for 2020
he hardest thing to say right now, among the plethora of interior periods and trends that are having their “moment” is what not to do. There seems to be so many avenues to explore, so many ways to express yourself through the variety of trends that have been offered to us through the European and American design shows that it becomes hard to say what’s passe. With information and education from social media of what is coming to market available to us almost as it hits the stands at the international shows, it’s easy to lose yourself or your personality in pursuit of the new and the now. Stepping back from trends and taking a personalised view of them, through your own filters, needs and experiences will allow you to see the best of what’s on offer and make it uniquely your own. That being said, I would love to see an end to following in 2020.
Be careful with colour
Terrazzo
Don’t jump on the trend bandwagon unless it fits you like a glove. Be prepared, though, the fit might not be so good in the future. Colours are tricky to talk about right now, living coral still has life and is being reinvigorated with different colour combinations to keep it alive. Desaturated, secondary pastels will still be a thing into next year, as too will acid bright colours and geminspired tones.
In terms of trends that we’ve seen this year, I’d like to issue a warning on peak terrazzo. I love it. I think it’s beautiful and interesting and there is magic to be had. And if you love it for what it is, and not because it’s the cool hot thing, then you’re A-OK to invest in it. Avoid using terrazzo in floor tiles or things that are hard to update unless you truly love it for its merits. If that’s not so, it’s best to play it safe with your consumption of terrazzo.
Shades of grey
Playing it safe
I’d say the only thing we’re going to move away from next year are cold greys, in favour of warmer, browner based neutrals. But let’s face it, grey is always going to be around in some form or another. If you want to move in a trend direction though, the thermometer is definitely skewing toward the warmer neutral hues.
That’s something else, ironically, I want to see an end to in 2020. There are so many ways to express yourself that you need to only take stock of what is important to you and the people who share your spaces to be able to tailor your homes to suit yourselves.

based neutrals.
Educate yourself on what works and why, see what has happened successfully in terms of merging different influences, and make sure you’re confident that what you want to mix is not going to be oil and water together. Explore options, combine passions, look at what serves you and your spaces – make your home your own.
Art is something, ideally, that reflects your loves and your passions. Don’t feel the need to fill walls just so there’s pictures on them. Art as decor is a bit of a tired approach. In 2020, I want to see art that feels like the occupant of the space. I want people to express themselves and what they love in their spaces.
Typography
French bulldogs
With that in mind I want to see the end of words and letters as decor. I want nothing more than to never see a “home” called a “home” in cursive, routed timber writing. I’m good for not seeing “art” comprised of quaint or motivational phrases. Keep those for cat posters and Instagram posts with yoga poses and sunrises.
Art as decor
Also, can we please put to bed the “playful” trend of using things like French bulldogs as decor? I’m a dog lover and I really love the real thing. I’d be pretty satisfied, though, to not see a Frenchie frozen in glossy ceramic, featured on wall art, or used as decor, period. With the exception of kids’ rooms and decorating choices for whimsy in those childlike spaces, let’s take a more grown up approach in 2020.
While I’m on the rant, art that just fills walls can take a rest too.

1980s brown brick home doesn’t necessarily jump out as an interior designer’s dream home, but Alex Bennett could see the potential in this Suffolk Park property. The designer and stylist undertook serious renovations to make her dream location work, saying, “The entire original home was gutted, and three metres was chopped off the rear of the house.” This full rebuild was coupled with her own interior design and styling input to create a warm, contemporary and refined home.
The brief to Simon Addinall from Those Architects was for something solid, practical, and well laid out. The family wanted a big main living area and kitchen, and lots of natural light. The architects retained the original external walls and tiled roof, but that was all that remained. The internal layout was completely reconsidered, and the doors and window positions were relocated to enhance the aspect and natural light. Once this initial work was complete, a second-storey extension was introduced. Bennett has brought her own touch to the interior styling, creating a “soft but solid” feel, with a variety of textures and warm neutral tones. The home balances lots of open space with comfy nooks, and reflects the relaxed lifestyle of the family who live here. “We have filled the space with the works of local talented creatives, which really enhances the warmth of the house,” Bennett says. While the outcome is exactly what Bennett dreamed of, it wasn’t without its bumps along the way. Adaptive reuse (rather than totally re-building from scratch) is an excellent environmental strategy, but can involve hidden costs and unexpected hurdles.

HOW TO …
Reimagine brown You heard it here first, brown isn’t going anywhere. We’ve spent years leaning heavily on cool grey and white interiors but, as we head into 2020, things are looking decidedly warmer. ■
Greys are slowly but surely
being replaced by warmer neutral tones, including “greiges” (grey crossed with beige), right through to
“Renovating rather than rebuilding was more costly and stressful than planned, as there were a lot of unknowns in the quality of the existing structure,” Bennett says. But she emphasises that the outcome was worth it. The calm and light-filled home is a street away from the beach, making it a favourite location for friends to drop in for an evening barbecue. The home’s new functionality and layout means it is the perfect spot for casual entertaining. Bennett enthuses: “It’s so nice having friends over, the adults can sit around and have a chat while the kids run and play on the grass.”

There’s no need to fear
brown – we’re not talking the “mission brown” of the 1970s. Start by introducing warm browns via natural materials – think buttery tan leather accessories, and warm timber furniture. ■
As we start to replace grey
our base whites need to warm up too. Choose a white with a subtle warm or neutral undertone. ■

Why the grass is always greener ... We hand-weeded, aerated the compacted soil, fertilised and topdressed the lawn over the coming months, and by December it was lush, green and provided the perfect spot for Christmas lunch and a game of boules. Of course, brand new turf (or seed) is sometimes your only option. Whatever you choose, here’s some guidance for creating and caring for a boules-worthy lawn.

hen we bought our first home in winter of 2016, the lawn was not a lawn – instead it was weeds, bare patches and holes dug by the previous hounds. Dotted sporadically through the desolate mess, we could see healthy patches of kikuyu grass (a common, hardy lawn species) that was eager to grow again if we helped it along. And so it was decided that we would revive the lawn rather than laying new turf.
When it comes to lawns you reap what you sow – literally. Choosing the right variety is vital.

CARING FOR YOUR LAWN ■
Know what type of lawn you have and research how to
fertilise, water and trim it best. ■
Hydration is key, so either install a good quality irrigation
system or commit to hand-watering your lawn according to
Laying new turf
the species you have.
For new gardens, choose a turf that suits the family’s needs as well as the garden’s aspect. It’s beneficial to have about 200 millimetres of sandy loam soil for grass as this allows for good drainage. Consider irrigation options before laying your new turf, however with our current drought it’s important to know what water restrictions are in place. You’ll want to level the topsoil, fertilise, add gypsum if required (clay breaker) and amend the pH if necessary. You can have rolls of turf delivered to lay yourself, or go ahead and seek a quote as it’s quite labour intensive for large areas.
■
Avoid spraying your lawn with toxic herbicides and it’s OK
ISTOCK
(and maybe a little good luck) to have some clover in there.
First, ensure you’ve got a good balance of trees, garden beds, and a sunny area for growing some food. We need to have a diverse range of plants in our urban areas to support biodiversity Once you’ve got the structure and plants in place, look at what is the minimum-sized lawn you’ll require for kids, pets and parties.
Choosing the correct type There are a variety of different grass species – kikuyu, couch, buffalo, etc. – all of which have cultivars that are suited to different climates, garden
uses and aspects (sun/shade), so talk to your local nursery or horticulturist. Choosing the most well-suited grass will save water and maintenance costs and it will look and perform better.
Repairing worn lawn Assuming the grass you have is suited to the climate you live in and is a cultivar that will recover from the odd soccer match and curious puppy, I’d recommend trying to repair it. You’ll need to get out there and hand-weed, so buy a little handweeder tool to make it easier.
You’ll need to do this every couple of weeks to get on top of the weeds, then just as required. Be careful not to let weeds go to seed, or you’ll be on the tools forever. Aerate your lawn by using a pitch fork, focusing on compacted areas. To address holes and uneven patches you can topdress your lawn, just be sure to rake it in so as not to cover the leaves entirely. Then, it’s time to fertilise the lawn and water in well. Mow regularly to thicken up and trim only one-third of the grass height when you do.

Collingwood might have suffered from a case of the infamous Colliwobbles in this year’s AFL preliminary final but the suburb itself goes from strength to strength as a darling of younger Melbourne. Three kilometres north-east of the CBD, Collingwood is neatly bordered by Smith Street, Alexandra Parade, Hoddle Street and Victoria Parade. Within that rectangle are Japanese cafes, furniture sellers specialising in modernist gems, artisanal butchers and a burger bar housed in 1970s train carriages on the roof of a fourstorey backstreet office block. Floating an idea
KIERAN MORRISSEY
rom the shores of Sydney’s Palm Beach, it may seem like a captivating little seaside structure had unwittingly drifted off to sea. But by no means is this fanciful floating home adrift. It’s a one-of-a-kind holiday home known as Lilypad Palm Beach. Designer and owner Chuck Anderson, who grew up on the northern beaches where ocean-based pursuits reign supreme, manifested the concept for Lilypad in 2015. With a life spent around boats, both for leisure and working as a marine engineer, Anderson’s vision was to inspire others to experience the magic that comes with being on the water and welcoming those from a “non-boaty” background. Unlike a typical holiday home, on land or otherwise, Lilypad offers a total walk-on, walk-off service, bringing an all-inclusive resort-style stay just metres offshore, yet with the complete notion of being in the middle of the sea. The journey begins ashore, where the concierge greets guests at the nearby jetty and takes them on a short boat trip, before they step foot onto the docking pontoon and arrive aboard the luxurious floating villa. Once on deck, the striking Scandinavian-inspired structure instils a sense of calm and solitude, with its simple design and high-level craftsmanship and engineering. Bifold doors open from the deck into an open sun-drenched interior, with the living room acting like a warm embrace, achieved by the open fireplace and oversized linen sofa.
Lilypad Palm Beach is a luxury holiday villa like no other, in an impeccable location.

Petrina Hicks Photographer
A
ward-winning photographer Petrina Hicks, best known for her large-scale surreal images, was studying journalism at the Australian National University before deciding to switch to photography. Now, in the first major survey of her work at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Sydney-based artist unveils more than 50 photographs and video from 2003 to 2019. She works closely with a model named Lauren who has albinism, and uses animals in her photography as well. Hicks lives by the sea in Mosman – in a studio apartment that is minimal, bright and filled with objects she has found on her travels or used in her photography. “I love being close to nature and the water and serenity it brings,” says Hicks, who has lived here for two-and-a-half years. Hicks blurs the line between the feminine and animal world in her work. “Artists, since the beginning of time, have explored their identity through animals,” she says.
