Contemporary chic waits in the wings

INDEX What to see this Weekend p6

Note from the editor

A

walk through an inner-city neighbourhood over the weekend emphasised to me why I love the motley nature of Melbourne’s suburbs. Here, kids from high-rise flats punted balls in the park, elderly locals nattered on sagging door stoops, strutting clusters of trendy girls swung shopping bags, and it all unfolded around restaurants serving a $39 plat de jour, next to cosy and welcoming coffee shops with espresso machines as old as their well-worn lino floors that curled at the edges. It was evidence that we are all different. A positive aspect of the price boom was that suburbs which might have withered on the vine have become vibrant. Young families have moved into areas where tightly held homes were passed down through generations, and downsizers have sought out cosmopolitan postcodes to make the most of the years without kids under their roof. We hope in this edition you find the change of address you are seeking in 2020.

mountain views, this ultra-contemporary family home receives high scores for sophistication and sustainability. Courtyard House, completed in 2017, was designed by architect Matt Thitchener. At the heart of the residence is a sweeping open-plan living area and kitchen, opening onto a generous courtyard and chic stone-edged pool. The client’s brief was to create three distinct wings: one for parents, another for children and a third for guests. The wings are connected to the courtyard by soaring sliding doors, delivering lush views and cooling breezes. A self-contained artist’s studio brings the bedroom count to seven. Solar panels, wastewater recycling and passive heating and cooling are embedded in the design. We’re crushing hard on the sandstock brick feature wall in the living room, a rustic contrast to the sleek black cladding and polished concrete Cathy Baker and April Connell of Belle Property Killcare are quoting a $5 million guide.

History is integral to this Federationera family home rich with original period detail. It was built around the time Australia’s flag was launched and half a century later the (joint) designer of that flag made this his home. Today the property has no flagpole but its garden has a pool bordered by hedges, a trampoline, terrace under a pergola and Federation-style cubby house. Sonoma’s restored features and modern inclusions are made for easy living. Auction: noon, February 22 Agent: Jellis Craig, Geordie Dixon 0418 588 399

or anyone travelling the Great Ocean Road, the township of Lorne is a compelling stop beyond the fact it’s roughly halfway between the road’s start at Torquay and its end near Warrnambool. Blessed with a beautiful setting on Louttit Bay and backed by the rugged Otway National Park, Lorne has become a tourist mecca where multimillion-dollar beach homes nestle into the landscape to privately enjoy their multimillion-dollar views, while on the main street Mountjoy

Parade legions of floppy hat-wearing families evoke memories of summers from decades past. Much has been made in tourist brochures of the bush meeting the beach, and it’s quite true; the eucalypts crowding the high ground above the main beach make it an indelibly Australian scene. During the whale watching season – May to September – it’s an excellent spot to see southern right whales on their annual migration. Nature lovers have plenty to do,

from ascending to Teddy’s Lookout on a lung-burning walk to the upper southern outskirts – always keeping an eye out for koalas – or ticking off visits to more than 10 waterfalls within 10 kilometres of the town. The coming of the Great Ocean Road was a boon for the township when the section from Eastern View to Lorne officially opened in 1922. Arrival can be celebrated in style at the likes of MoVida or Ipsos, both members of the town’s new wave of excellent restaurants marrying

coastal cool with beach views. Since the mid-90s Lorne has cemented its claim as a Victorian epicentre of New Year’s revelry as home of The Falls Festival, a multi-day music and arts festival attracting around 15,000 campers to a site above the township near Erskine Falls. The annual Pier to Pub is equally iconic. The 1200-metre open-water swimming race attracts around 4000 competitors and is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2020.

f you wanted a picture of quintessential Camberwell, it would be hard to top this warm, expansive home on one of its classic leafy streetscapes. A broad front garden is a handsome frame, its manicured features a primer for the rear greenery that rises up to create a verdant, private perimeter. The double-height entry has a gated porch before the front door. Inside a generous foyer with luminous hardwood floors fans across to the left and the formal dining room. In here a decorative ceiling, stone-trim fireplace and large windows over the garden are highlights. Across the way, a gorgeous formal living area flows across and up to the light-filled music/sitting room. Head back from here and a study offers light and air courtesy of the bank of north-facing windows. Winding back through the entry hallway, you’ll find the convivial heart of the home, the smooth kitchen-family room. Here

Caesarstone benches, crisp white cabinetry and glass splashbacks set a cool contemporary tone. Another long bank of windows looks out over the fabulous deck; just about the perfect spot to gather the clan for a languid summer dinner. Step down and you’re into the fine, spacious garden with a swimming

pool, a barbecue deck and sitting area as well as long grassy terraces. Upstairs there are three bedrooms and an appealing sunroom/bedroom at the front of the level, all serviced by a bright bathroom. The main bedroom has gorgeous views and a compact, but stylish en suite. Towards the rear and there’s a brilliant retreat.

A substantial Mediterranean villa flanked by two driveways on an expansive allotment, this iconic Camberwell residence will suit families of all ages.

ome fathers and daughters bond over brunch on a Sunday but Lindsay and Andrea Moore do things differently. They ditched the eggs on toast for a blueprint and hammer, and spent three years renovating three unused farm buildings into three distinctive, self-contained accommodation sites that now form their family-run business, Ross Farm. Located on the fringes of Meeniyan, a small town in Gippsland, Lindsay and his wife purchased the property 12 years ago. “It was once a dairy farm but hasn’t been used as one for probably 40 years, but the infrastructure was still there,” he says. Their plan was to build their own home on the property but circumstances changed, leaving the site ripe for opportunity. The area was developing fast in terms of people wanting to come here and pretty soon ideas start popping in your head,” says Lindsay of his decision to develop the site.

The decision to join forces and work together was a no-brainer for the pair. Andrea is an experienced interior architect who runs her own design practice Studio Moore, while Lindsay, a veterinary surgeon, is a keen home renovator and furniture restorer who has no qualms about getting on the tools. “It was Dad’s suggestion to turn the dairy and the barn into accommodation and we were like ‘you’re kidding’ because it was a falling-down shed,” Andrea says. “But with our complementary skill sets we knew we had an opportunity to do something interesting.” Lindsay was also driven to preserve the agricultural architecture. “I’ve worked these farming areas for a long time and you realise the old infrastructure is disappearing very rapidly and my thinking was that it would be nice to preserve it in some way.” So, with three existing but almost dilapidated buildings at their disposal, the father-daughter team

“A lot of the design ethos was about how we were going to honour the original architecture.” got to work, undertaking the smallest site first – The Cabin, then a year later The Barn and The Dairy. “I wanted each project to have its own unique identity,” says Andrea. “A lot of the design ethos was about how we were going to honour the original architecture, reuse and source local materials, and how we could make as much of the fitout and furniture ourselves.” Lindsay proudly adds, “Her ideas are really amazing so I didn’t have any problem prosecuting what she suggested.” They both attribute the success of the project and their unaffected relationship to being mutually respectful of each other’s ideas. “Sometimes working with family can be fraught with difficulties but I think in this case we didn’t have any problems,” Lindsay says. “We have a pretty balanced working relationship and both listen to what each other say.”

The Cabin, which Andrea describes as “calm and cosy”, accommodating one to two people. It has been welcoming visitors to Meeniyan for over a year. The Barn and The Dairy came next and were built concurrently, welcoming guests from mid-2019. “We wanted to use raw, honest materials and no plaster or paint features in these later two,” Andrea says.

The Barn’s raw timber walls and steel, spiral staircase are always a surprise for those who walk through the doors. “People can’t believe the smell of the timber, they love it,” says Lindsay. The Dairy, the largest of the three, is known for its moody, charred timber walls. “It’s a Japanese woodpreserving technique where they burn timber but that’s actually used to clad portions of this building and wrap inside,” Andrea says. The Moores did as much of the build themselves while working alongside a small team of tradespeople. Lindsay was responsible for making most of the furniture himself and Andrea took to sourcing materials from the area to inspire and inform her overall design. “I start with the material and palette for each building first and then apply it to each design,” she says. She repurposed steel rods into lighting, a watering trough into a modern plunge bath and granite pavers in the kitchen that reminded her of Wilsons Promontory’s big, beautiful boulders down the road. “I wanted to bring Gippsland’s unique surrounds into the interior.” Lindsay adds, “In the end it’s all about giving the people who stay here an experience they wouldn’t have otherwise and that’s proven to be what’s happened, which has been very satisfying.” That this father and daughter team achieved this ambitious goal together is even better. rossfarm.com.au

fter moving into a converted cowshed at the end of her parents’ property in Byron Bay, architectural designer Zana Wright and her partner, builder Sam Jolly, designed and built this stunning new self-contained home on the property. The new house is made of earth, stone and Australian hardwoods, all locally sourced, and deeply connected to the environment. The house is designed to have a “minimal environmental footprint” and is informed by the local context in a very material way. The home was built by local sustainable builders Balanced Earth (balancedearth.co), whom Jolly works for. Wright, her dad and Jolly also collaboratively built the joinery,

Everything old is new again kitchen, bathroom and earthen floors. This home is a true family affair, and the living arrangement is a unique one – Wright, Jolly and their baby Lumi rent the home they designed and built, with her parents set to move in later, when they are ready to downsize. Everyone wins! The design of the home allows the family to be connected to the changing cycle of the seasons. Wright is both romantic and realistic about the open-plan design, saying “Having parts of the house situated outside undercover is

climatically appropriate for our subtropical bush location, however, we do still have a winter, during which I enjoy how the house forces you not to become too precious.” Wright describes the interior styling as “simple and honest” with the construction materials visible in the finished design. These earthy and raw tones and textures serve as a backdrop for the family’s collection of handcrafted artworks and objects – made by the couple, their family or swag of creative pals.

Wright’s favourite space is the outdoor bathroom. She talks of the pure joy of standing under a hot shower in chilly winter air with the Milky Way overhead. While this might all sound and look like an absolute dream, Wright says the build wasn’t without its difficulties. Building with local materials sounded like a sensible and relatively easy idea at the outset but, incredibly, it wasn’t always the more convenient or cost-effective option.

and Lumi.

‘Honest materials’ What that means in real terms is building or renovating your home with materials that can be seen and celebrated. ■

If your home has

original timber panels or timber beams, expose them and sand them back to reveal the texture.

Wright says that, counterintuitively, “I found that using natural and recycled materials over standardised materials bought from the hardware store usually involved extra labour, which was difficult to reconcile with the budget”. Despite these minor setbacks, Wright and her family cherish the home they’ve created here. It’s been a truly collaborative labour of love, and Wright, Jolly and Lumi are fully embracing their current living arrangements, until it is time to hand over the keys to her parents.

Avoid plastering or

painting over original materials. We love internal walls of exposed brick, concrete, or even rammed earth. ■

Recycled materials

present a great opportunity to build or renovate without that shiny “brand new” feeling. ■

There’s a huge trend for

How to grow coriander

if your garden is like hers with ample fresh compost, morning sun, a regular water, and 35-plus years’ gardening experience also helps. For those of you who aren’t having the same kind of luck with your coriander, I’ve elaborated on my mum’s advice below.

Where to grow Grow coriander close to your kitchen in pots with your other herbs that require regular picking or, like we do, at the edge of your garden bed for easy access. Full sun will give you the quickest growth for soft herbs like these, but a half day of sun will also suffice. Remember, though, when

Coriander is a fickle herb to grow.

f there’s one herb that causes the most heartache among new gardeners it’s coriander. Such a potently delicious herb to eat but, boy, is it a fickle thing to grow if you don’t have the inside info. Coriander is one of the most loved and eaten herbs at our home – perfect for adding an exotic touch to even the most bland of meals. Both the leaves and seeds can be used in many dishes, and as a bonus the flowers attract beneficial insects, too. And my mum seemingly has the inside info. She could tell you how to grow it in one sentence: “Just buy a packet of seeds and throw them into the garden bed.” Simple. This works

When to grow Always sow from seed, as coriander seedlings are so fond of being transplanted and are often damaged when separated into single seedlings from a punnet. Coriander performs best when planted after the summer solstice. When I taught gardening at Bondi Public School, the students would drop the coriander seeds into the soil at the start of term one (February). These would grow into good-sized plants in autumn, but wouldn’t bolt to seed as they do leading into summer. The plants were used in the kids’ cooking classes for months before we let them go to seed in late spring.

How to maintain Prep your soil with blood and bone and give your coriander a watering can’s worth of Seasol or worm juice

once a fortnight. Keep up the watering, as a heat-stressed plant will bolt to seed much sooner. At home, a few plants should give you enough leaf if you’re using it weekly. Succession planting of seeds every few weeks in spring will give you short-lived plants but, in my opinion, are still worth having.

How to harvest

Coriander, lime & garlic dressing Makes 500ml

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 garlic cloves

2 tablespoons of white

1 bunch of coriander (leaves

wine vinegar

and stems), roughly chopped

½ teaspoon of sea salt

For the leaf, cut the outside stems down low to the ground. Let at least one of your corianders go to flower for the pollinators and you’ll get seeds for replanting, too. These dry, brown seeds can then be harvested for sowing or cooking.

Juice of 2 limes

Slow Down and Grow Something:

1. Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend

The Urban Grower’s Recipe for the Good Life, by Byron Smith with Tess Robinson, Murdoch Books. urbangrowers.com.au

This is our go-to salad dressing to accompany any bowl of leafy greens. It’s tangy with a bright lime flavour, and will jazz up any old salad. The coriander is a must but if you have an abundance of mint, feel free to add that in too. And if you want a little extra creaminess, add a spoonful of tahini to the blend.

until smooth.

2. Place in a sterilised jar and keep in fridge for up to three weeks. Tip Serve in a dipping ramekin with torn pieces of freshly baked sourdough for a pre-dinner snack.

Endless summer

MUSE PHOTOGRAPHY

t’s a bold statement to make, but one that is rather justified – no other country in the world does beach houses quite like Australia. It’s fond memories of childhoods spent by the beach that inspired one family to create Salt at Shoal Bay – a luxurious coastal retreat. Located a mere 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney, Shoal Bay is a scenic suburb of Port Stephens in NSW. It’s here that owners Lauren and Michael Charge spent much of their childhoods and while never crossing paths, shared the same memories of hitting the beach and jumping off jetties in the area. Years later, after meeting and starting their own family, the couple would often find themselves back at Shoal Bay for seaside holidays and family visits. Though one fateful afternoon in February 2016, a “For Sale” sign outside a rundown twostorey house gave the Charge clan an entirely new perspective. The family realised there was a gap in the local market for a beautiful homestay designed for large groups. After a two-year journey from the initial purchase, today Salt at Shoal Bay is a sight to behold, with the main house divided into two selfcontained levels, along with a third free-standing cottage at the rear. The upper level, sleeping 11, features high raked ceilings, large glass windows framing panoramic views of the bay, and a verandah that provides front row seats to Shoal Bay Beach across the road. The ground level, sleeping 10, presents a private backyard deck, complete with an outdoor dining and barbecue area,

Salt at Shoal Bay was inspired by memories of summers past.
