Timeless appeal of a modern marvel Making the best use of contemporary materials and technology created a home that stands the test of time. B y PAU L B E S T

odern or contemporary? Either way, this luxury three-level residence overlooking Sydney Harbour is a beauty in the eye of the beholder. It can be a fine line sometimes deciding whether a house is, in architectural terms, contemporary or modern. Or a series of fine lines, both vertical and horizontal, which can help settle the argument. Take this three-storey luxury house on one of the premier streets in Vaucluse, one of Sydney’s most affluent suburbs, set on a sloping block with glorious harbour views. It is easy to think

of it at first glance simply as contemporary. And in the literal definition of the word it is – relatively speaking, it’s recently built. But on closer inspection, the glass and concrete construction can be thought of as modern. Or rather, as leading Sydney architect Edward Szewczyk sees his design, recalling a modern style of architecture that has its origins in the early and mid-20th century. For a start, the facade adopts a simple, minimal expression dominated by calminducing horizontal planes of suspended floors and terraces set against various vertical

elements. At the same time, the front eschews any obvious ornamentation or decoration that employs complicated or convoluted shapes and forms. “I always look at architecture in a way that avoids being trendy and fashionable,” says Szewczyk. “Decoration is quite short-lived.” The Polish-born architect believes this tends to date a property. On the other hand, the clean elegance of modern architecture endures across decades. It is what can be termed timeless. This Vaucluse house is almost a decade old but could have been built yesterday. Another pillar of modernist architecture supports the idea that form follows function. Outwardly, Szewczyk has designed the house – perched on an elevated block with a northfacing prospect of Sydney Harbour – to reach out to the sun and wide, open vista of sky and water, while also using the slope to retain a sense of privacy. The interior tells a similar story. Again, the internal spaces can be read as contemporary. They look new. But, in fact, they follow a more

“The property stands apart given the quality of design, quality of the build, level of finishes and the owners’ willingness to maintain everything exactly to the original high standards.”

modernist line, particularly the pavilion-like living level. Spatially, the floor plan is simple and open. Szewczyk has created rooms that freely flow front to back as well as good visual connection through large spans of glazing to distant views and water, including the pool at the rear. He has also used materials and textures such as the steel, stone and timber to add warmth and harmony. The timber staircase and sliding doors, for instance, are like pieces of quality furniture. Interestingly, the owners have maintained the inside just as Szewczyk designed it. “It pays tribute to the architect’s good design,” says Ken Jacobs Christie’s International agent Darren Curtis. Szewczyk, though, admits that elements of his design are innovative, and conform more to a contemporary style of architecture. Szewczyk calls this “evolved modernism”. He points to louvres controlling light and privacy front and back as well as the external spiral staircase to a rooftop terrace.

“We have evolved from the original approach to modernist architecture,” Szewczyk says. “We’re living in a different time, lifestyle is evolving, technology is changing. We’ve got access to much better materials and technology.”
