simple authenticity lies at the heart of one of Melbourne’s newest luxury apartment offerings. The Eighth, located in the prestigious Domain precinct, is constructed from glass and concrete to evoke a strong sense of identity. The building’s restrained style is purposeful and unpretentious, says architect Pete Kennon from Kennon Studio. “I feel for so long buildings in Melbourne have been trying too hard to form an architecture that means something else or it’s an ingenuine outcome and I think there’s a principle where the architecture is the medium we use to create

this project, but it’s not the message in itself,” he says. “The building itself is trying to be genuine in its structure and its facade, so it’s showing authenticity of what it is and that enables the life and the people and the interior design to create the content and the architecture to be, in a way, the container.” The South Melbourne building draws inspiration from local modernist designs, such as South Yarra’s Fairlie apartments, which were built in 1961. Its raw concrete gridded facade makes it one of the most notable buildings in the area. “I think there’s a number of buildings in

Melbourne that have similar quality all built around the 1960s, and I find it was quite an interesting period of architecture in Melbourne because we were learning how to build apartments in Melbourne and there were people being inspired by high rises in America,” Kennon explains. “The Eighth picks up on all those successful buildings within Melbourne and takes principles from modernism, but filters it through a contemporary lens whereby we are using technology to create the finishes of the concrete and we’re placing highly engineered structural grids instead of having them tucked away in the building floorplate.” Through its grid structure, The Eighth does away with burdensome columns that interrupt views or floor plans. Comprising 36 two, three and four-bedroom apartments, the building is also positioned so that each residence has a dual aspect of its surrounds. Each of the building’s four corners takes in a different view – the north-east over the Shrine of Remembrance and the Royal Botanic Gardens, the south-east over Albert Park Lake, the south-west to Albert Park and Port Phillip Bay and the north-west to the city. The Eighth is set back just one street off St Kilda Road, in the Domain precinct. Major revitalisation projects are underway in the precinct including the state government’s $11 billion Metro Tunnel. “It’s one of the most exciting precincts in Melbourne with all of the upgrades going on and officially spearheading the Domain precinct and its branding,” says Kay & Burton agent Damon Krongold. “It’s a renaissance in no uncertain terms.”
