Like minds see the light
P
aris-based designer Rodolphe Parente has an unparalleled ability for creating interiors of beauty that somehow always feel exciting and new. His latest project is this spectacularly beautiful apartment in the South of France, designed for a young family with two children who are passionate about art, furniture and design. Dream client alert! “It was a quasi-total carte blanche,” says Parente of this project, whose objective was to evoke the apartment’s sunny location, fusing it with a deliberate mixture of textures and natural colours. “The Mediterranean spirit with a chic and contemporary lifestyle, and a cool attitude – this was my framework,” he says.

Parente met his clients through a gallerist friend. “It was a quasi-love affair,” he says. Not only is the couple the same age as him, they also discovered they shared similar views on design and lifestyle. The pair wanted to create a global project that sat at the intersection of interior design, furniture and art. All the pieces were carefully chosen to embody a certain freedom of spirit. The generously proportioned 350-squaremetre interior sits on the top floor of the building facing the sea. “It’s sunny and full of light from the morning to the evening. Like a house pending to the clouds with a 360-degree view,” the designer says. Parente developed the project using only natural and organic materials. “It was an
important part of our studies to find new finishes and timeless textures that felt connected to the context of the location.” Osso travertine lines the floor, while cactusfibre carpet appears in the living room alongside cleaved travertine blocks. The kitchen features lacquered timber panels, lava stone benchtops, and a black and white clay floor. The entrance door handle and all metal details are crafted from bronze, textured wallpaper makes a cameo in the vestibule, while walnut timber adds a sense of gravitas to the library. Appearing in the corridor in front of the metal bronze panels and terracotta lime-wash paint are cupboard doors lined in cork. Dark red bamboo lines the powder room, green Mediterranean marble wraps the main

bathroom, while green waxed timber panels line the walls of the main bedroom. “The rich and poor materials are assembled for a perfect story,” Parente says. The interplay of colours and materials is not only incredibly complex and diverse, but also dangerous. This approach would bomb in the hands of someone with less experience and a lot less talented, yet Parente manages to achieve a visual balance with effortless ease. And this is precisely why I love him so. Ultimately, the driving principle for this project was to create a family home where life could unfold daily among all the art and design pieces. On holiday at home A boutique apartment complex in Melbourne’s Hawthorn celebrates the familiar and the luxurious.
U
psizing on quality of space is what today’s downsizers are all about. They want contemporary design that invites a luxury lifestyle. And while they may want to downsize on maintenance, they don’t want to compromise on the extras. At The Hawthorne, these boxes are ticked with communal spaces including a pool, lounge and gym. The four-storey development of just 45 apartments counts landscape design by Jack Merlo and large balconies among its assets. It has all the attributes architect Gary Catt says he could picture himself enjoying. “When I think about it, I have designed this boutique complex with myself in mind as a resident,” he says. “I’m in the age group and life-cycle stage.” Catt has put a modern spin on homely elements downsizers are bound to feel familiar
with. This can be found in the dramatic wide-eave skillion roof design. “I wanted to celebrate familiar contemporary domestic architecture that has been around and stood the test of time,” he says. “That’s why I look to history for what have become iconic shapes. Skillions are such shapes. They are also casual references to holiday homes and this in a sense is an urban holiday retreat. “For those with school-age kids they will still provide the needs typical of the family home.” The Hawthorne is the first residential development for Chinese multinational Hisense. The company is better known in Australia for its TVs and naming rights to Melbourne’s Hisense Arena, but it has long established itself as a property developer in China. With prices starting from $2.5 million, The Hawthorne hopes to attract downsizers with an
appetite for a lock-and-leave lifestyle. The apartments are deliberately low-maintenance, yet richly appointed, so residents will have the freedom to leave for an overseas sojourn just as easily as they can a weekend getaway. Its enviable address in the renowned leafy inner-east is likely to be the winning drawcard for many interested parties. The Barkers Road development has views across the playing fields of nearby Xavier College and is in easy walking distance of the cafes and shops on Glenferrie Road, making it perfect for locals who already love the area. “People who live in Hawthorn don’t leave Hawthorn,” says Rodney Morley agent, Stanley Spicer. “It’s always been a very sought-after suburb. “There’s the restaurants on Glenferrie Road, the cinemas, the parks, the gardens ... and you’re five minutes from the city.” The addition of artwork by Greg Mallyon adds to the sense of nature and prestige this inner-eastern location already possesses.
