t’s been a while since I’ve heard a place described as a brothel. That the place in question is a hole, a dive. You know, not very nice. Besides, I’ve probably never written about a home that was once a legitimate brothel. At least not knowingly. But there is always a first, and today, my friends, is the day we indulge in a supremely clever transformation of a former, yes – umm, brothel. This cunning Residential Alterations & Additions project saw Fieldwork architects add a new dwelling to the rear of the existing sixmetre-wide terrace. Connected by a shared bluestone and timberdeck courtyard, this unique-looking home occupies one of the back streets of Melbourne’s inner-city suburb of Fitzroy. Even at first glance, it’s pretty clear this is a home with a colourful past. The repurposed “Exquisite Ladies” neon sign alone is probably enough to pique anyone’s interest. Fieldwork made a conscious effort to embrace and honour the site’s former life, rather than erase it. They took cues from existing materiality and colour schemes (think various shades of pink and gold accents), and overlaid it with a bold and unexpected mix of elements. Rather than create a singular gesture to unify spaces, Fieldwork have taken a far braver approach that celebrates the quirkiness found in the original brothel. Nothing seems to match, yet everything works so perfectly as a team. Salvaged red neon and custom pink LED lights, bespoke leather and velvet banquette versus the vintage leather armchair in the front room, timber herringbone parquet and granite tiles on the floors, lightly waxed brass benchtops versus the cheerful pink colour accents in various shades present throughout the interior. “This is a space focused on detail, surprise and tactility – and the junctures between the old world and new, Apollo and Dionysus,” says Quino Holland, director of Fieldwork. One of the main problems with the original house was its lack of natural light. Fieldwork integrated a skylight over the new staircase to the east, while implementing a onemetre setback to the west, providing glazed

access to a raised garden bed. In doing so, they achieved not only better access to natural light, but also opened the interior to landscape. The central planted courtyard acts as a transition between the primary residence and the rear outbuilding. This area transforms from a bright, tactile and green urban sanctuary by day into a space bathed with a saucy and mysterious ambience, due to the combination of red neon and pink LED lights. Grrrr, baby. The rear building retains its external walls, while the interior was completely gutted. The ground floor presents as a simple white box with an open living and dining space. Gold accents and a pink neon strip light wrap the entire interior, leading upstairs as a continuous line to two glowing pink bedrooms. Bizarre and saucy, but somehow appropriate. Such a “brothel” moment, except in this instance, Fieldwork have managed to completely reframe the meaning of that word, at least when it comes to explaining the spatial and aesthetic qualities of an interior. Massive respect.

An open-and-shut case A stunning house combines both seamless views of the harbour and a sense of intimacy in its spaces.

t’s a credit to architects of this Point Piper residence that they were able to take their clients’ somewhat contradictory brief and deliver something that not only met expectations but surpassed them. The owners wanted a home that opened up seamlessly to the stunning harbour views, but also provided intimate interiors. They wanted precision finishes, but also a home that offered “a handcrafted, artisanal feel”. The result is a residence the owners believe contributes to Sydney’s architectural legacy. A highlight is the handwoven copper ceiling that arcs gently over the living areas. The polished surface gleams during the day and sparkles like a rippling river at night. Automated cavity windows imported from Italy whisk the enormous glazed elements of the home out of sight at the touch of a button, while reclaimed Karri timber gives warmth to the bespoke joinery throughout the property. The timber and copper finishes are married with Macedonian Sivec marble in the kitchen,

with the pure-white marble carried through on the drawer fronts. Italian Breccia marble features in the bathrooms, and Rosso Cait marble lines the lap pool. The views from the property span from Seven Shillings Beach and Double Bay to the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The scenery is captured across all three levels with multiple living spaces, terraces and Craig Burton-designed gardens tailored for relaxing and entertaining. An elegant lap pool and adjoining cabana is the perfect place to unwind when the weather warms up. The flexible floor plan of the home also has provision for self-contained accommodation for guests or a live-in nanny. Meanwhile there’s a huge, skylit, multipurpose space ideal as a games room or lavish cellar and wine-tasting room. Wrapped in Wondabyne sandstone and with direct access to the harbour, the home keeps exclusive company, with John Symond’s megamansion right next door.

The stunning residence works as well for hosting an exclusive event as it does as a luxurious home for day-to-day living, says selling agent Alex Lyons of Raine & Horne Double Bay. “The property boasts some of the most spectacular entertaining spaces while presenting warm, intimate and comfortable living space for the entire family,” says Lyons. Iconic ‘Hayven’, Noosa Waters A property of immense stature built to a quality expected in the finest hotels, where truly no expense has been spared and every detail has been perfected, during a construction where budget was not a limitation. While the house is expansive and grand in its scale, its design brilliance lies in the home’s very human composition within this extraordinary scale. Designed as a series of smaller areas, flowing together seamlessly to create a coherent and spectacular space, ‘Hayven’ is just as comfortable for two guests as it is 200. It is a home that rivals some of the great 6 star resorts around the world with the 25 metre pool, accommodation for over thirty guests, commercial kitchen, caretakers quarters, two jetties, boat shed and tennis court!
