illionaire industrialist Sanjeev Gupta has made his name globally as the “man of steel” for redeveloping troubled steel and metals industries, but is less known for his penchant for grand historic houses. His taste in housing has not gone unnoticed by many of Sydney’s trophy home owners, however. Since Gupta and his wife Nicola moved to Sydney in 2016, and took up residence in businessman Ian Joye’s $30,000-a-week Bellevue Hill estate Barford, the couple have been cited as fairly regular house hunters. They were hoped-for buyers of Singaporean tycoon Chio Kiat Ow’s Vaucluse waterfront estate Phoenix Acres before it sold to hotel mogul Jerry Schwartz for $65.25 million in late 2017, the Elaine estate in Point Piper before tech boss Scott Farquhar bought it for $71 million and they looked at buying Bellevue Hill’s Rona
estate before it sold for $58 million last year. Through it all, the third-generation industrialist has been making headlines around the world as he transforms his Liberty House Group from a family business empire to a global industrial powerhouse with an annual turnover of close to $20 billion. The superhero moniker, man of steel, was first coined about six years ago when Liberty House
bought a troubled steel mill in South Wales in the UK and through a structured deal with employees managed to save it and its 150-strong workforce. Three years later he established Wyelands Bank in Wales, and named it after the 1819-built Welsh country estate in Chepstow known as Wyelands House, which he had purchased at the time for £4.5 million. The Guptas and their three children relocated to Sydney in late 2016, and the following year his GFG Alliance bought the failed South Australian steel manufacturer Arrium for about $700 million, handing him ownership of the state’s Whyalla steelworks and making him a local hero in the township. More recently he’s scored the title of “environmentalist” after GFG Alliance entered a strategic partnership with Shanghai Electric to build the 280-megawatt Cultana Solar Farm. And he’s finally found a new home. More than six months after he was widely rumoured to be looking to buy the grand Italianate mansion Bomera on the clifftop at Potts Point, it sold in October for $34 million. And no sooner had Gupta relocated to Bomera than updated records show it was bought by a trust created in June under the directorship of his neighbour and stockbroker friend Les Owen.

t’s one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Australia – and now Noosa is officially home to one of the country’s most breathtaking prestige property markets, too. Latest figures from the Domain Group show that the median price of apartments in Noosa Heads leapt by the highest percentage of any other local government area in the country over the past five years, by 80.4 per cent, while houses rose by a substantial 57.5 per cent. And that stunning growth could not be characterised more clearly than by the price

history of one glorious house at Sunshine Beach now on the market. Nearly two years ago, the seven-bedroom home at Seaview Terrace was sold for $15.2 million by tennis champion Pat Rafter. Today, it’s being offered – albeit with a complete refurbishment and upgrade in the meantime – for an astonishing $20 million. “There’s been incredible capital growth over the last couple of years in Noosa and it continues to be a very buoyant market,” says selling agent Tom Offermann. “People are having difficulty finding better forms of
investment than property with the banks having problems and shares being so volatile.” Paul Arthur, chief executive of Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty, is now considering opening a new prestige property office in Noosa after testing the waters with the 13-bedroom, Hayven estate at Noosa Waters listed with price expectations of more than $12 million. “Noosa’s had a real resurgence and we’re seeing a lot of high-net-worth individuals out of the southern states and New Zealand who want to spend the colder months there, as well

as downsizers and younger professionals and families mostly in the tech space.” Limited land, a council keeping a tight rein on development and population caps have all helped to keep the property market in Noosa strong, says president of the Noosa Chamber of Commerce Janet Kake. “It’s all about supply and demand and we have a limited number of properties and area,” she says. A three-bedroom apartment at 55 Hastings Street has also just sold for slightly under $11 million, smashing the record for an apartment price on the Sunshine Coast. “People’s priorities are changing these days,” says agent Roark Walsh of Tom Offermann Real Estate. “They’re looking for lifestyle and climate and cashed-up buyers are coming out of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, as well as expats.”

ne of the greatest insults you can throw at a luxury car is to suggest that it handles like a boat. What, then, are we to make of a luxury boat that, presumably, handles like a car, because it wears a Lexus badge? This is the question that plagues us as we consider this curious maritime move by the world’s biggest car company (Toyota, which owns Lexus) while wafting through the effusively expensive enclaves of Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton in Florida. The Lexus LY 650 is a 65-foot, open-ocean flybridge cruiser, built with the help of one of America’s premier boat builders, Marquis Yachts. Most pronounced is the striking bronze, silver and black colour scheme, but there’s also its modern profile, with windows that run almost the full length of the hull. It looks fast. Significantly more expensive than any landlubbing Lexus, the LY 650 starts at $5.4 million and stretches to almost $7 million if you tick all the option boxes. It offers a top speed of 33
knots, a cruising speed of 26 knots and a range of between 250 to 300 nautical miles. Yet, despite its serious numbers, the Lexus impresses more for its luxurious Nuvolari Lenard cabin. You can lounge about on three outdoor couches or sit at the cocktail bar with its exquisite eucalyptus cabinets or the dining table surrounded by sumptuous linen lounges. Downstairs are three generous-sized state rooms, each with en suite, and a main cabin that’s as gorgeous as a luxury hotel suite. The LY 650 does, of course, handle like a boat, but this time that’s OK.

The problem with buying a $5 million-plus boat like the Lexus LY 650 is that it demands an appropriate setting. Fortunately the views across Kings Bay from this ocean-access Gold Coast residence fit the bill perfectly. For sale Agent: Alex Phillis Real Estate, Alex Phillis 0468 547 267
