Your average wine aficionado will have perfected their palate and be able to list their preferred grapes, regions, flavour profiles and vintages. They may have invested in decent home wine storage, or a temperaturecontrolled off-site location, to store their carefully curated collection.

So, where to for those serious about their vino? It makes sense to invest in a vineyard.

Sitting 50 kilometres south of the vibrant city of Barcelona in western Spain is the picturesque Penedes region. It covers a long strip of land between the sea and the mountains, and is best known for its cava sparkling wine, dry reds and whites, and some dessert wines.

On the region’s border is a 30-hectare organic vineyard, currently listed for sale, with five hectares of planted grapes, and 400 olive trees.

Set among the vineyards is the property’s incredible residence, the masia. Masia translates

to “farmhouse” and is an iconic rural building in the region of Catalonia.

This one has quite the storied history, dating back to the 12th century. It’s said to have been a shelter for French troops during the Napoleonic Wars, and an important hotel for pilgrims and other travellers on the old Roman road.

Only a handful of families have owned the property over the years, making the sale a particularly rare opportunity.

Selling agent Puri Mancebo from Rimontgo says the house has been completely restored from top to bottom, to become a home for enjoying the very best of rural Spain. While the exterior maintains its Spanish heritage, the indoors are sleek, modern and minimalist, exuding Scandinavian day-spa vibes.

With just over 1000 square metres of interior space over two levels, the masia includes seven spacious bedrooms with en suites. The grandest

of all is the main, occupying 80 square metres with views over the vines.

A large living room has soaring ceilings and an open fireplace, while large arched glass doors in the private dining room open to a terrace overlooking the valley.

Another light-filled room with soaring ceilings makes a beautiful spot for yoga or meditation. There’s also an internal lift.

Throughout, stark white floors and walls are accented with light timber beams, while touches of exposed stone gently peek into some of the rooms and intricate tiles add interest in the bathrooms.

The home is being sold furnished, with pieces from high-end brands used throughout.

And as for the lifestyle here, it’s nothing short of idyllic. There’s a typical mild and warm Mediterranean climate complete with an ocean breeze, and the coast is just 20 kilometres away – you can admire views of the ocean from the higher peaks of the valley.

“A masia near the coast enjoys both the calm of the natural environment throughout the year with the harvest of vineyards and olive trees as well as the almond trees and forest, as well as the hustle and bustle of the touristic towns along the coast from Tarragona to Barcelona,” Mancebo says.

“In less than an hour you can enjoy the history of the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona, walks in the Park Guell, luxurious brand shopping, taste amazing Spanish tapas and Michelin-star restaurants, listen to opera in the famous La Rambla, admire views from the Montserrat mountain and hiking in the forest around, go sailing and fishing in the Mediterranean Sea and visit the touristic town of Sitges.”

Why renovate one Queenslander when you can do two? For this enterprising couple, it’s been thoroughly rewarding.

Sue and Justin O’Hagan have renovated and lived in heritage houses in Melbourne, California, Brisbane and, most recently, Eumundi, in the tropical hinterland of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

“Each time we say, ‘OK, that’ll probably do us,’ but then, we love a new project,” Sue says with a laugh.

The couple moved 90 minutes north of Brisbane in 2011, leaving their large, renovated Queenslander behind, after falling for a smaller, partially renovated Queenslander while on holiday near Noosa.

“We’d been toying with the idea of buying a bit of land and moving an old Queenslander onto it, which is quite a Queensland thing to do; it’s not so common in other states,” Justin says.

“Then, we were flicking through a local real estate magazine and found this original dairy farm cottage.”

Dating to 1916, Rangeview sits on its original site, a rise looking towards Mount Cooroy. Surrounded by established trees and a swimming pool, the lush, gently sloping land struck the O’Hagans as a peaceful place to take stock, grow some veggies and continue their “semi-retired” and hobby-rich lifestyle.

They rented a caravan while they gave the old place a new roof and a fresh lick of paint. Then, Sue (“The super stylist,” Justin says), who makes lampshades for local interior designers, set to work decorating the space.

The three-bedroom house allows easy movement between indoor and outdoor living zones, with a beautiful al fresco entertaining space surrounded by tropical gardens.

A mezzanine office has allowed Justin, an IT professional, to consult from home.

came to them – why not move another heritage cottage onto their land, renovate it and offer it as guest accommodation?

After a year of searching for the perfect project, they found a “very, very run down” Queenslander two hours away in the town of Esk.

“They move the houses in the middle of the night because they have to get approval from police and traffic,” Justin says. “It hadn’t rained for three months but, of course, it started pouring as they came over the ridge.”

Due to the rain, the cottage sat in two halves beside the road for weeks.

“Our poor neighbours,” Sue says, grimacing. “Everyone was having quite a laugh, and someone said, ‘Oh, we didn’t know it was hard rubbish collection!’ ”

Eventually, the rain eased enough for the cottage to be winched into position, some way

from the main house for privacy, and the restoration process began in earnest.

Luckily, Sue and Justin weren’t in much of a hurry.

“Justin was the owner-builder,” Sue says (“And chief labourer,” he adds). “We worked at it slowly over about three years, I’m sure our friends all thought we were mad – it did look pretty terrible to begin with – but we loved the whole process.”

The couple rescued and recycled as much as they could from the cottage, and then sourced old windows, fretwork and doors to match, scouring Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, demolition yards and auctions.

They added a side verandah and installed French doors and a wood-burning fire, its parts and mantle sourced from four different locations.

“We had a vision even before it arrived of what it was going to look like and we stuck to it,” Justin says. “We are very pleased with the end result.

“The two buildings look as though they have been sharing the site for 100 years.”

Once the interior was ready to be decorated, Sue again took charge.

“We like an eclectic look with a mix of things, and we have collected bits and bobs of furniture

over the years,” she says. “But it’s about comfort, a relaxed look and some feeling of history.

“Nothing is on a grand scale; there’s no acre of marble or anything like that.”

Still, just like the main house, the cottage displays a rich array of colour and texture as designer textiles, fabrics and vintage throws add layers of warmth and interest.

Rather than a “safe, white bathroom”, the couple chose bold Catherine Martin wallpapers and, for the kitchen, equally eye-catching peacock-blue cabinetry and emerald-green tiles.

Throughout every room, Sue’s lampshades sit alongside the furnishings in all colours and patterns. They work wonderfully against the rich hue of the wood floors and white, timberpanelled walls.

After two years, the many five-star reviews on the property’s Airbnb page testify to Rangeview Cottage’s roaring success as guest accommodation.

In fact, Sue’s styling has received so many compliments that the property is being offered as is, for anyone who would like to buy the entire package.

So, where do the O’Hagans plan to go next?

“Well, you’ll never believe it,” Sue says with a laugh. “But we have our eye on another old Queenslander.”

Kollosche says one of Broadbeach Waters’ defining features is its spectacular views, which

add extra sparkle to the already beautiful suburb.

“Most properties capture amazing Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach skyline views, which makes it so special,” he says. “People find it difficult to leave the area once they’ve discovered such views – just one of the many reasons it’s such a tightly held market.”

All quiet on the canal front

Amid the bustling energy of the Gold Coast, Broadbeach Waters stands apart with its unique sense of solitude and an affluent suburban vibe. Even those who work here, like Khianna Chapman of Breathe Holistic Health, appreciate the stark contrast that defines the suburb.

“Even though some big-name facilities like Pacific Fair and the Star Casino are conveniently close by, this area nevertheless remains quieter,” she says. “It’s the antithesis of the hustle and bustle often seen throughout the coast.”

Chapman feels connected to the suburb’s residents through her work, describing them as a friendly community who value leading happy and healthy lifestyles.

“Locals love to spend a lot of time outdoors, enjoying the canals, walking their dogs around the parks and socialising at their favourite cafe,” she says. “So, it’s no surprise that everyone I meet is warm and eager to strike up a chat.”
