How many times have you walked past a grand home and wondered what it’s like inside? I think that daily on my commute to the office in Pyrmont, Sydney, about the terrace homes in Grande Pyrmont Bay Estate. Some days, depending on which hot desk I sit at, I peer down from the window and ogle its private courtyard pools, intimate balconies and soaring doubleheight ceilings peeping through. So, when one came on the market I clicked on the listing immediately. Inside, it’s even better than I imagined and you can see it for yourself on our cover. The spiral staircase and lift to every level are just the start. For the next few editions I’ll be taking a short break, getting inspired by the art nouveau architecture throughout Italy and the Haussmann style of Paris – field research for Prestige’s Foreign Affair feature *wink*. Au revoir for now until we speak again in August.

If you love adventure and natural beauty, Vancouver presents the ideal offering. Nestled between the mountains and the ocean, the west-coast Canadian city is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, while also brimming with culture and cosmopolitan appeal. Sitting in the affluent neighbourhood of Point Grey in the city’s west, and cascading down a sloping block, is 4407 West 3rd Avenue.
Frits De Vries Architects designed the fivebedroom, five-bathroom property, which took four years to finish and was completed in 2021.
“Because of the sloping lot – and we’re all about the views here – they did a reverse floor plan so that you can see the views from the living room, kitchen and dining space,” says selling agent Samantha Whiffin of Whiffin & Wilson Real Estate.
Walk past the 100-year-old rhododendron in the front courtyard and you enter into the
middle level, where you’ll find the main suite and another bedroom with an en suite.
Upstairs from here are the main living spaces, with a powder room and an office tucked away to one side. Also here, the home’s sleek kitchen has high-end appliances, ample bench space and a generous butler’s pantry.
The lower level is all about entertaining, with a large recreation space plus two bedrooms and ample storage.
Guests will be more than comfortable in the self-contained one-bedroom, one-bathroom laneway house. It sits on top of a double-car garage detached from the home, a quick walk through the rear courtyard and past the glittering pool.
That pool is a wonder in itself. The perfect spot for a relaxing dip, it turns into a resistance pool for exercising, and you can also pull across a section that converts into a hot tub.
Whiffin says the unique design, coupled with the desirable neighbourhood, has appealed to everyone from couples to small families to someone looking for the ultimate bachelor pad. Either way, live here and you’re buying into an enviable lifestyle.
Like the jaw-dropping main suite. The bedroom boasts floor-to-ceiling windows facing that view and has a stunning wraparound walkin-wardrobe, which is almost the size of the bedroom itself.
Off the robe are two separate en suites. If you’re moving in, you’re best to move fast and stake your claim on the en suite towards the back of the home, where an oversized, freestanding bath enjoys more of those floor-toceiling windows and views.
Inside, the home is understated luxury, filled with natural light and clean lines, with custom mouldings and ample cabinetry hiding away any clutter. There’s air-conditioning throughout, while the concrete floors are all heated.

glow. There’s even an internal lift if you want to avoid the stairs.
“The attention to detail is what really sets it aside,” Whiffin says. “Every space has been thought out with something automatic or some kind of lighting feature. It’s just a very comfortable home.”
For entertaining, you have a few options. The downstairs recreation space is a cosy spot for watching movies, with a bar area that can be opened up or hidden away in the cabinetry. On the upper level, there’s ample space for hosting a dinner party. Then it’s up to you if you want to retire in front of the fireplace in the adjoining lounge room, or head out to the balcony.
“They gave up a portion of the interior square footage to make it so they have this heated indoor-outdoor space on the main floor,” Whiffin says. “They have these automatic shades that enclose the balcony off the living room, and within that space, they have heating, lighting and a sound system. So, they’re able to use that year-round, which is pretty special and unique to the house.”
And then sitting atop it all is the piece de resistance: the unique rooftop lounge. From up here, all of Vancouver’s beauty is served up as a visual smorgasbord with 360-degree views over the mountains, the city and the water at nearby Jericho Beach.
“You get pretty incredible sunsets up there too,” Whiffin says.

SUNSHINE BEACH
To live in Sunshine Beach – tucked between the lush splendour of Noosa National Park and the Sunshine Coast’s breathtaking coastline – is to be one of a privileged few.
While it’s perfectly laid-back, luxury resonates throughout this coveted town, with grand homes designed to maximise spectacular ocean views, often with private pools and al fresco areas.
Smaller residences and apartments cater to downsizers and holidaymakers.
People don’t stumble upon places like Sunshine Beach by chance; instead, it’s a postcode to which individuals aspire — one that epitomises the pinnacle of coastal living.
Always sunny in Sunshine Beach
Sunshine Beach Real Estate principal Pip Covell says the area’s climate is truly superb, apart from a few sticky days in February.
Add white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters to this picture, and it’s no wonder it attracts a mixture of permanent and seasonal residents and holidaymakers.
“The infrastructure now in place is very different from 20 years ago, with exceptional public and private schools and great transport services, including the Sunshine Coast Airport just 30 minutes down the road,” Covell says.
“It embodies the sought-after have-it-all lifestyle, rarely found in a single place.”
Grateful to call this remarkable place home, Covell paints an idyllic picture of her daily life.
“A normal day may involve a swim and chat with fellow dog owners and beachgoers, taking the long commute to work of five to 10 minutes, driving slowly, as kids ride or scoot down the street,” she says. “And then there’s the simple joy of working remotely at home while gazing out across the ocean.”
Underrated coastal gem
Warick Redwood moved to this hidden coastal gem from Sydney 32 years ago. After starting and selling a few small businesses, Redwood recently retired, finding solace and fulfilment in what he affectionately calls paradise.
“Sunshine Beach remains a well-kept secret, tucked away from the busy main roads that lead to the glamour of Hastings Street in Noosa,” he says. “While away from the crowds, the town’s quaint village creates its own vibrancy, with the beaches and park at its heart.”
Redwood is a life member of the Sunshine Beach Surf Club.
For your local “pub”, it’s hard to find a place with better views, he says, where days can conclude with a refreshing swim and a couple of bevvies on the ocean-facing deck.
“Sunshine Beach offers an extraordinary way of life,” Redwood says.

Cellars for buyers
By HELEN HAWKES
To store a bottle of 2017 Penfolds Grange, with its fully ripe, intensely flavoured shiraz grapes, in a mere pantry is something an oenophile would consider a crime.
So, too, would an architect or interior designer when having a beautifully crafted wine room in a luxury home is simply a matter of choosing an appropriate space and the right professional.
“Our work includes absolutely top-tier cellars, from those that are completely on view as showpieces to those that are discreet and out of sight,” says Darren James, co-owner of Brisbane-based Darren James Interiors
“If you are a true wine buff, you simply want to have a cellar where your wine is looked after.”
A stunning recent project: a cellar in a sandstone Kangaroo Point basement.
“The client wanted a separate place where they could sit and enjoy a glass of wine with friends, and the sandstone blocks, from floor to ceiling, had to be the hero,” he says. “We accentuated them with concealed lighting from above and below, to create an overall glow, with the wine lying in custom-made, powder-coated stainlesssteel racks that could accommodate up to 1000 bottles, in front of the blocks.”
A heritage-listed brick column in the middle couldn’t be moved, so a black ash table was built around it and teamed with black oak bar stools.
Because the most luxurious wine cellars are also places for conversation, it has two separate seating areas and carefully curated furniture, including a B&B Italia Grande Papilio swivel armchair, a Glas Italia Bisel low table and a Cassina Taliesin armchair.
Of course, rather than renovate, a premium buyer can always acquire a property with a cellar in situ.
“Temperature-controlled wine cellars with tasting rooms and relaxation areas are a common feature in homes of a certain stature,” says Darren Curtis, of Christie’s International Sydney. “Some owners are collectors, some simply connoisseurs.”
The owner of Woollahra’s Denholm estate, currently on the market, says his expansive cellar space, which has a vast and expensive collection, a tasting room and a living area, is “a fantastic place”.
He says it has been “an absolute delight” to fill the 2500-bottle space, adding: “I definitely have to check it’s all OK occasionally.”
