LEATHER SOUL \ THE NEXT READ

F

or a first-time author, Christian White has certainly aimed high. The Nowhere Child is an intriguing mystery that spans continents and decades. It is an ambitious tale of stolen identity and dark family secrets that won White the 2017 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an unpublished manuscript. We are introduced to Kim Leamy, a Melbourne TAFE teacher. Her world is tuned upside down when she is approached by a stranger, who tells Kim her real name is Sammy Went. And, what’s worse, Sammy went missing in Manson, Kentucky as a toddler 28 years ago. From there, White builds a suspenseful journey that takes us from Coburg to small-town America, as Kim nervously explores a past radically different to the one she looks back on in Australia. The story flicks back and forth from the present to 1990s Kentucky. We’re introduced to fictitious Manson, at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, where people came ‘for the hiking trails and good ol’ fashioned Southern hospitality’. All is not what it seems. Scandal and shame lurk not too far from the surface of the rustic charm. Manson is in the grip of an extreme fundamentalist church and the disappearance of two-year-old Sammy Went sets off a devastating chain of events. Nearly 30 years later, Kim (or Sammy) pieces together her life through a series of awkward, painful reunions and moments of sheer terror. There are many moving parts, but White skilfully manages to weave together what is ultimately a tale of love and redemption. ●

LIFE of RILEY

“No one would have ever said in Australia when I was young, ‘you are going to be a comedian’. It was like it wasn’t a job for women.” GINA RILEY

S

ome time in the mid-’80s, Gina Riley remembers stepping on to the stage for the first time ever as a stand-up comedian, in an era when it was extremely rare for a woman to do so. It was at the Dick Whittington Tavern in Chapel Street, St Kilda, and she was terrified. “I got up, and I thought I was going to faint,” she says. “It was one of those moments where I thought, ‘oh god, what is happening?’ All the blood rushed to my head. “I can’t remember what I did, but I came off and said, ‘that was terrible,’ and Glenn Robbins and Richard Stubbs were there and they both said that wasn’t terrible; you will know terrible when it happens.” Riley had done theatre before; but that night at the then Melbourne comedy hot spot was her first solo effort. Stubbs remembers the night really well. He says Riley “shone” up on stage, and it was obvious she had real talent. “It’s funny, sometimes people who are really talented, they think they are not; they just need that little bit of encouragement at the beginning,” he says. “She is brilliant.” Thankfully Riley continued and, at 57, she is a treasured figure in the Australian comedy and entertainment world. Not only that, she is someone who has had a real impact on Australia’s cultural psyche, thanks to shows like Fast Forward, Big Girl’s Blouse, and of course, playing the iconic Kim, in Kath & Kim – which she and her co-star, great friend Jane Turner, also wrote. It’s unlikely the girls from Fountain Lakes will be back. “For the 20th anniversary I’m not saying we wouldn’t pop a wig on for something, but I don’t think we would do another series again,” Riley says of the smash hit. Riley has just signed on alongside a stellar cast including William McInnes, Simon Gleeson and Christie Whelan Browne in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s extravagant production of the Oscar

Wo r d s

Wilde play, An Ideal Husband. She worked with McInnes in the 1992 sitcom Bligh, playing Mr and Mrs Macarthur, which lasted only one season. While it might have been different in the Dick Whittington days, Riley considers every role carefully before she says “yes”, and she has to really want to do it. “I’m pretty choosey these days,” she says. “I love Oscar Wilde, and I really wanted to work with Dean Bryant, the director, and the part really resonated with me, so I thought, why not?”

G

rowing up in the Melbourne suburb or Canterbury, Riley went to school at Preshil in Kew, leaving at 15 with a dream of being a serious actor, and with comedy out of the question. She first worked in a newsagent, before the stage beckoned. “I didn’t call comedy, it called me,” she says. “It wasn’t a career path for a woman. No one would have ever said in Australia when I was young, ‘you are going to be a comedian’. “It was like it wasn’t a job for women.” It was in those early days she formed lifelong friendships with Turner, Marg Downey and Magda Szubanski. The four became known to Australia thanks to the phenomenally successful Channel 7 show Fast Forward. Riley joined in 1990, but more importantly, as well as developing lifelong working relationships, their friendship has also endured. The four catch up for dinner once a month, now wouldn’t that make for a great Australian television talk show? “We have just got each others’ backs,” Riley says of the beautiful friendship between the four. “We make each other laugh, and it’s being around other people who have the exact same sensibility as you, but also have had the same experiences as you.” Riley, Turner and Downey were burstingly proud of their long-time friend Szubanski in her efforts towards the successful “yes” vote in the same-sex marriage plebiscite last year.

LU K E D E N N E H Y ●

Ph o t o

“She was incredible; I think she swayed the vote,” Riley says. Off the stage, Riley is a very private person. In 2012 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and fought it; something she keeps to herself. You won’t see her on many red carpets or at opening nights, and she has never chased fame or public recognition. This approach is refreshing in the age of the selfies, and a fame-loving generation. “As I get older, I really don’t want to be a public person, which sounds ridiculous with what I do,” she says. “I’m totally boring in everyday life. I love playing tennis. Marg and I play tennis – mid-week ladies (she says in a Kath & Kim drawl) – and Jane sometimes comes in. Riley believes she avoids the public spotlight partly because she is a comedian: “We are more observers. We are not people who super belong.” She prefers to live a quiet life with her husband Rick McKenna, one of Australia’s top television producing and executive talents. The couple’s daughter Maggie McKenna, now 21, is a bright star in the musical world, wowing critics and the public with her staring role as Muriel Heslop in Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical, which premiered in Sydney in November last year. “I was bawling,” Riley says of watching Maggie on opening night. “I’m incredibly proud.” As for the future, Riley continues to write, and when the right acting or musical role comes along, she will take it. She will keep playing mid-week ladies’ tennis, having dinners with her life-long friends, and look on proudly as her daughter’s career takes off. Perhaps another gig at The Dick Whittington is in order, because thankfully for Australia, that night was the start of something very special. ● AN IDEAL HUSBAND \ The Playhouse, Arts Centre Melbourne, until August 18. ● Tickets at artscentremelbourne.com.au

French TWIST SYNDICATION INTERNATIONAL

tarting in the ’90s, Mick Harvey took a deep dive into the fabled French chanteur Serge Gainsbourg’s extensive back catalog. The result for the singer-songwriter, multiinstrumentalist, composer, producer, founding member of the Birthday Party and the Boys Next Door, and onetime Bad Seed, was a painstaking and respectful translation of four-albums worth of Gainsbourg’s tunes. The cycle started with 1995’s Intoxicated Man and finished with last year’s Intoxicated Woman. “I’ve taken the whole project way beyond any kind of sensible proportion,” Harvey says. Harvey has been vindicated in the gargantuan undertaking. First, it’s been proof for an Englishspeaking audience that Gainsbourg’s songs are every bit as packed with sly humour, double entendre and sexy ennui as we suspected. Plus, the public response has been stellar. Even Jane Birkin, the actress and singer with whom Gainsbourg recorded the notoriously breathy Je t’aime moi non plus, gave it the thumbs up. “Jane said that Serge SERGE GAINSBOURG would have been happy, because he was always complaining about the fact that there were no covers of his songs – ‘why no covers?’,” Harvey says. Now, to celebrate what would have been Gainsbourg’s 90th birthday, Harvey is bringing his favourite Gainsbourg renditions to the stage, together with his crack band the Intoxicated Men, guest singers and strings. The show is a change of pace for Harvey. “Serge’s songs are all written and geared to be entertaining, funny and exciting, rather than challenging or difficult,” he says. “So that, for me, is really odd. I’m not a natural entertainer.” ●

What’s missing at this end of town are good cafes. Two-month-old Forty Flips is the latest trailblazer to open north of the Bell Street divide. And guess what? beans,” says co-owner and barista Huss Avci, who runs Forty Flips with his wife Narelle. You’ll see her on the floor, hunting the wi-fi password for one table, delivering kid-friendly milkshakes with teeny-tiny marshmallows to another, and generally making everyone in the cafe feel comfortable. Initially, they anticipated a small reno, but “the building was so old, whatever we touched was falling down,” Huss says. They knocked out walls, removed the ceiling, and installed a commercial kitchen. The result is a fresh, white space with all the visual ticks of an inner-city cafe: filament globes, potted succulents, warm woods, and a semi● Forty Flips ● 250 Sussex Street, Pascoe Vale

open kitchen (they even sell kombucha). The Avcis hail from Cyprus and, with chef Burak Demirci from Turkey, the mod-Med menu is inspired by their heritage, with sumac garnishing a plate of perfect free-range poachies on buttered Brasserie bread. Add sides of sujuk (spicy Middle Eastern sausage), salty wilted spinach, house-made hash browns or fat roasted mushrooms, and you’re good to go. Portions are generous and brekkie runs all day. Zucchini fritters are made in-house and are an excellent dish; the only tweak might be less vinegar in the accompanying chilli pickle. Smashed avo is amped with confit cherry tomatoes, chilli and labna

– the toast loaded so generously with avocado that you may feel the need to scrape some off. Kids are well catered to with jaffa pancakes and “popcorn chicken and chips”, a fave of the Avcis’ five-year-old son. Chicken is coated in panko crumbs and cornflakes, deep-fried, and served popcorn-sized. What’s not to like? Locals have embraced the cafe, Huss says. “The response has been much faster than we thought it would be.” The name Forty Flips relates to a Turkish saying, used when something’s been hard to achieve but finally pays off, loosely translating to: “I’ll be so happy, I would perform 40 flips, 40 times”. Looks like the name might be paying off. ●

My eyes rolled when I heard a restaurant named after Thor’s hammer had opened. But fast-forward a few months and here I am at Mjolner, shooting whisky from a marrowbone “luge”. I was a sucker for the upsell after scooping out the rich, gelatinous middle cooked in Vegemite and sprinkled with meat powder. It’s more Insta-worthy than revelatory but, like everything here, it’s fun. There’s not much to do with a bone that slides from beef short rib like a sigh, nor the wing of a half chicken, plump and moist beneath a modesty sheet of charred witlof. Mjolner is brought to you by the crew behind Eau de Vie and Boilermaker House, so there’s a comprehensive cocktail list, and craft beer served in polished horns. For a horde of Vikings, vegetable dishes are thoughtful, especially savoy cabbage on barley risotto, heady with black garlic. I prefer the little touches to the wooden ship bow sailing through the brick, like choosing a handmade knife from a leather roll. Come dessert, a blowtorch appears table side with a too-runny mandarin bombe alaska; it’s flame hot like a Hemsworth brother. ●

The success of Hobart’s winter festival Dark Mofo seems to have awakened event organisers to the idea that outdoor festivals don’t need to be restricted to summer. People’s enthusiasm for huddling around flames while eating and drinking has not gone unnoticed by the Melbourne Racing Club, which has embraced the season with its Whisky, Wine & Fire festival. The fire side of the equation will see Caulfield racetrack light up with a “fire garden” of flaming installations, burning sculptures, fire pits and fire performers. Then there’s the whisky, a mix of the ultra commercial (Johnnie Walker) and the artisan (Tasmania’s Belgrove Distillery). Those interested in the local artisan end of the scale will be able to sample whisky from Corowa Distilling Co. in NSW, Timboon Railway Shed from Victoria and, most local of all, Port Melbourne’s Starward whisky, made in red wine barrels using Australian barley. The wine side of Whisky, Wine & Fire plays it straight with a solid roster of Victorian and South Australian producers such as Tahbilk, Grant Burge and St Huberts. Those wanting to know more about whisky and wine – other than how good it tastes next to a fire pit – can attend a series of masterclasses. Food runs with the theme, centred on flaming grills and wood-fired ovens and will include delicacies by Alejandro Saravia from Peruvian restaurant Pastuso, Burn City Smokers, and Hoy Pinoy. It’s cold and dark out there. Get amongst it. ●

Or whether you order the burger and chips instead of the steak and salad at dinner. Thousands of these choices will also be made without even thinking. There’s no denying that when it comes to losing weight, having the strength to say “no, thanks” is important. But just like any other human emotion, willpower isn’t always going to stick around. the strongest of willpower can find it goes right out the window. I’m always telling my clients that continually making the right choices comes down to a bit more than just your ability to say “no” but relies on a few other important factors in the lead up. So here a few strategies to help you make the right choice next time you’re faced with temptation. ESTABLISH HEALTHY HABITS \ When you’re making 35,000 choices every day, you don’t have time to contemplate every one. I’m always talking about the importance of putting healthy habits in place – these will become like second nature that you will fall back on without even thinking. So, think about turning any “sometimes” healthy behaviour in your routine into “all the time” habits. ARRIVE SATISFIED \ I’ve said it before, and I’ll say

it again – failing to plan is planning to fail. If you know you’ll be in an environment where temptations are at an all-time high and that your willpower will be put to the test, make sure you’re well prepared and arrive satisfied. Having a balanced, protein-

based meal will mean you’re much more likely to make the sensible choice when you spot that plate of party pies being passed around.

there’s a big delicious pile of food in front of you. Avoid this by paying particular attention to your portions and not letting them get out of hand.

AVOID MAKING RULES \ My nutrition philosophy has always been big on balance, and this means never making anything strictly off bounds. After all, when we tell ourselves we can’t have something it becomes even more tempting and rules are made to be broken, right? Think about making decisions rather than labelling anything as strictly good or bad. When faced with temptation, this will make your decision a lot easier; we know you could have it, you’re just choosing not to.

OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND \ Remember the best way to avoid giving in to temptation? Don’t tempt yourself in the first place! Do yourself a favour and get rid of your chocolate stash and replace it with some healthy sweet alternatives (the Healthy Tam Tims on my program are my current obsession). The reality is, we’re always going to be faced with tempting situations – that’s just life. As long as you focus on arming yourself with the tactics above, saying “no” and tackling any tempting situation head on will be easier than you think. ●

Modern families are typically drawn to the idea of fresh, lowmaintenance living. People with busy lives tend to prefer spending spare time with their feet up or in a pair of jogging shoes rather than fixing things or dealing with old grime. Presenting as new, this two-storey townhouse requires no further work to provide immediate satisfaction, and the location suggests those shoes will get good use. You enter to the living area, which has sliding doors to a terrace. The living area flows in to the kitchen and dining areas. Off the dining area are a powder room and a laundry. The social areas exhibit a soft, contemporary palette blending chocolatey-stained, oak floors with slightly tinted walls and white ceilings. Beveled skirtings show an attention to detail, and a full wall of built-in storage in the living area minimises the need for freestanding furniture. The kitchen is sleek and shiny. Smeg appliances and granite benchtops improve its chances of remaining so. Slide open the glass doors in the dining area for indooroutdoor interface with the backyard, where terracing and a patch of lawn make up a good balance for entertaining al fresco and giving kids a safe place to play. It’s an airy ascent on the timber staircase to the first floor. Here, the main suite takes up about half of the square metres, with a walk-in wardrobe, an en suite and a roomy, sleeping chamber opening to a covered balcony with pleasant, street views. Ducted heating and cooling are included. You can stash stuff under the staircase. The remote, double garage at the rear of the property is easily reached via a lane.

FINAL WORD

As for proximity to open, green space, the position is arguably unbeatable. Stroll to Price Park or Viewbank

Wine buffs will likely covet the cellar in this house. With stone and brick walls, thatched ceiling, ample bottle storage and a stone-and-timber bar, it’s just the spot for stylish tastings. The Merchant Builder residence was built in the 1980s and has been renovated discerningly this century. There’s lots of living space in the forms of a lounge/dining room, rumpus room, study and open-plan kitchen and meals area. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Two of the minors have mezzanine beds. Timber ceilings and an open fireplace enhance the earthy vibe. Out of doors, two decks, a Balinese gazebo and a circular spa look over the lush gardens. ● KAY KEIGHERY Agent: Morrison Kleeman, Tristan Messerle 0438 176 416 Price: $1.1 million-$1.2 million Auction: Noon, July 14

MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
