You could almost badge this a nostalgia edition, thanks to Ronan Keating, the Irish singer who became doubly famous beyond his hitmaking band Boyzone with the tune When You Say Nothing At All from the Notting Hill movie. Hugh Grant pursued Julia Roberts on-screen to Keating’s soundtrack; as for Keating’s love life, he later became smitten with an Australian, whom he married. The former X Factor and The Voice judge knows Melbourne well. He speaks candidly ahead of the Melbourne leg of his band’s tour, featuring songs we have been making up and breaking up to for 25 years. ●

““I am Christie Johnson” … and I’m a weather forecaster I’ve been with the weather bureau for about

15 years. A lot of people are weather nerds and know they want to do it right from the start. But actually I wanted to be a doctor. I got into medicine at uni and did two-and-a-half years, but I really wasn’t enjoying it, so I took a year off to consider my options. I switched to science, and did a subject in meteorology with a funny American lecturer. I absolutely fell in love with meteorology; it was just fascinating. I’ve always enjoyed maths so I liked that side of it – seeing how you could describe how the weather works with mathematical modelling and equations. But it wasn’t just maths, it was learning about cool stuff, like tropical cyclones and thunderstorms. One of the great things about the job is that you

do feel like you are making a difference in people’s lives. We’re very conscious, for example, when we’re in drought conditions that we need to be careful about forecasting rain if we’re not sure. We also do a lot of aviation forecasting, so we have to be mindful of what the criteria are for the planes to be able to land or not land. We know millions of dollars are riding on whether or not there’s going to be fog at Melbourne Airport, and if the planes can land or whether they need to divert to Sydney or somewhere else. These days we largely rely on computer modelling, and we get models from all around the world. Our local models run out of our supercomputer here at the Bureau of Meteorology. There are different pressures, so in summer it’s

fire forecasting, and thunderstorms are the big things. In winter it’s things like frost for the farmers, and everyone’s interested in the snow season. You have to obviously get your head around sometimes being wrong, and taking the flak for that. I found when I first started I got really stressed and I was worried about getting it wrong. As you get more experienced you realise that there are going to be some situations where it’s going to be really hard, and you may as well just roll the dice. You can never do it 100 per cent correctly. Our verification statistics are very good and improving all the time, but you’re never going to be 100 per cent and you just have to be OK with that. ●

COVER STORY

Pop heart-throb Ronan Keating recalls the ’90s, his love of Melbourne and giving thanks.

T

hey’ve sung with Pavarotti in Italy, were at the top of the charts with the Spice Girls in the ’90s and now, after 25 years together, Irish boy band Boyzone is calling it a day with a world tour that sees them perform in Australia as a group for the first time in their touring history. “I can’t believe we have never played Australia in all the years we have been doing this,” says Ronan Keating, lead singer of the ’90s boy band that sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and was known for their hits Love Me For a Reason, Words, and Father and Son. “It took us two years to work out what we wanted to do with the band. At the end of the day, we know we’re lucky to have had 25 years in the business – bands like ours don’t make that timespan.” Keating says a world tour – on their terms – is the ultimate final salute, and a way of thanking fans for the memories. “It’s a bonus to be able to write this final chapter ourselves,” says Keating, who has taken a break from morning breakfast radio in London to tour. Their new album Thank You & Goodnight sees them collaborate with Ed Sheeran (Because) and Gary Barlow (Love) while paying a special tribute to the late band member Stephen Gately through the new track I Can Dream. The song itself was found on an original demo recorded by Gately for his solo album in 2002 and was reworked in an ode to the performer who died of an undiagnosed heart condition in 2009 at the age of 33.

“We never thought we’d be as successful as we became, but we kept pushing ourselves time and again,” Keating says. “Whether it was when we had our first No.1 single or No.1 album, we kept moving the goal posts after every achievement. From our first magazine cover to being on Top of the Pops, hosting the MTV Awards and winning many accolades, it was a crazy good time. “To be part of a ’90s pop movement with bands like Take That and the Spice Girls has been a great ride for us all.” Keating, who travels to Australia three times a year with his Australian wife Storm (a former producer on the Australian X-Factor he met in 2010 and started dating a year later) and their one-year-old son Cooper, says he’s a big fan of Melbourne. “I love the people in Melbourne, I have great memories of being at the Melbourne Cup Carnival,” he says. “There’s not many cities around the world that have the cool factor. [In Melbourne] there’s great coffee shops, Michelin star-rated restaurants in alleyways that you didn’t know existed and a real energy and coolness that is unique compared to anywhere else in the world.” His gruelling tour schedule means there’s less chance to party when he’s in town, if merely for the stamina required for each show. “It’s a two-hour show and we play 23 songs. It’s the biggest thing I have ever done and I am singing every single song,” he says. “I take one hour to warm up, and an hour before that I am in lock down on my own. I drink honey, ginger and lemon teas and sip it slowly to get my voice warmed up. “I can’t party after the show. Once I’m off that stage I go straight to bed. If I lose my voice the show doesn’t happen.” But if there’s one thing Keating would change about his past, it would be to chill out a little. “I took myself very seriously in the ’90s,” the 41-year-old recalls. “As a young kid aged 16, I wanted to be successful. I wanted the band I was

in to be successful and I wanted to be seen as someone you could respect. I worked very hard at that, and because of that I didn’t get to enjoy my time as much as I probably should have. I was probably too serious for my own good. “I have learnt to take everything with a pinch of salt, I don’t take myself too seriously any more. I still have an amazing work ethic, that’s something that will never change.” After the tour, Keating will return to London to be with his family. He also has three children with his first wife Yvonne Connolly – Jack, Missy and Ali – who live in Ireland. “I would rather not be on the road, it’s a gruelling life, but it’s what I do,” he says. “But it’s inevitable I’ll be on the road touring for a long time yet. I have just finished working on my next solo album but, in an ideal world, I would love to sit at home with Storm and Cooper. But after this, I’ll be knuckling down with radio work, some acting and TV work. You have to keep it diverse.” ● BOYZONE: THE FAREWELL TOUR \ Playing Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne, April 3 ● ticketek.com.au

A little slice of Devon

A

cream tea, also known as Devonshire tea, consists of a good strong cup of tea with scones, jam and clotted cream. In my recent trip to the UK I had a lot of cream teas. While I didn’t make it to Devon to try the original, I had many in Bath and Bristol. Needless to say, it really is the clotted cream that makes the scones so special. In this recipe I’ve used whipped cream due to the unavailability here of clotted cream. I have also used spelt flour in this recipe as it gives the scones a much lighter texture and also has lots of benefits of vitamins and minerals, and I have included buttermilk as I find that the acid in the buttermilk helps the baking powder work more effectively, making it rise better. The secret to making good scones is to not handle them too much and keep the dough sticky. Enjoy them as fresh as possible with a good cup of tea. ●

Spelt scones Ingredients (makes 8 scones)

Method Heat the oven to 180 degrees and line a baking tray with baking paper. ■ Sift the flour, baking powder and bicarb of soda into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the salt and sugar. ■ Grate the butter into the bowl, using a coarse grater. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients using your fingertips, until the butter is incorporated evenly and the mixture resembles sand. ■ Make a well in the centre, and pour in the cream and buttermilk. Stir in gently using a spatula. ■ Add in the orange zest and raisins. ■ Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead very gently, just to bring the dough together. ■ Flatten the dough gently into a disk about 2.5cm to 4cm high. Cut the circle into 8 scones. ■ Arrange the scones on the baking sheet, and bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown on top. ■ Allow to cool slightly before serving with whipped cream and jam. ● ■

It gave some hints about the two-day event, held at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, Tasmania. Even the most jaded of media members brushed off their Balenciaga handbags, stat. It did not disappoint. When guests – including designer Bianca Spender, actress Teresa Palmer and David Jones ambassador and football legend Adam Goodes – ascended the 99 steps of MONA, they were greeted at the pinnacle by an oyster-shucking chef. Lunch at hatted restaurant The Source took place at a long table that deviated wildly in its design from one end to another. Head chef Vince Trim wanted the table to

represent different parts of Tasmania, from the “ocean” (one section of the table was filled with water and crustaceans) to the “bush” (foliage spilling out of a tree trunk). In one section, wasabi leaves were so high that plates had to be mounted on pedestals, with vines wrapping the wine glasses. But the most astounding element unfolded when Trim announced that 64 different edible morsels were hidden within the table’s landscape, including wild yellow fennel, purple thistles and apple tree branches. All this to showcase the idea that David Jones serves up fine food and homewares. Dinosaur Design bowls, Robert Gordon pottery and Riedel wine glasses took a secondary position on the table. The event was focused on changing people’s perspective of the department store, positioning it as a luxury destination for homewares, beauty, food and, well, living (or more accurately: living well). “Our founder David Jones himself was a really incredible innovator of his time, and his whole purpose was to bring the best of the world to the store” says Georgia Hack, general manager of

marketing and communications. “He wanted to shape the style of the nation. Our purpose with this event was to go back to those cultural elements.” That was proved at night, for the autumn/winter 19 runway show, attended by designers, celebrities, media and 20 David Jones customers. At the parade’s end, polyphony singers beckoned the audience to “come” in song, leading them through the museum until they reached The Nolan Gallery. There, amidst giant arrangements of foraged flora from MONA’s grounds, guests were handed silver balls on a chain (“orb handbags”), which opened up to reveal a salmon sashimi meal. And even though the festivities would continue the next day – attendees would return to MONA for a guided meditation and “wellness” brunch – the high point came when MONA founder David Walsh appeared and engaged in lengthy conversations with some of the fashion folk. Before the night was over, designers Kit Willow and Alexandra and Genevieve Smart (the sisters behind Ginger & Smart) would be among those in a Hobart wine bar, sharing a drink with Walsh. ●

His parents, who still live in Australia, come to visit a few times a year and Tierney feels blessed to have a supportive family and wife. “What’s kept me grounded through all this has been my family,” he says. “The decision to move to the States wasn’t easy. You’re uprooting four different points of view, each with a partner or wife and each with different expectations of what their future looks like. “Our dream has been realised because they believed in us. He says relocating 10 years ago to the US was a hard decision to make, but necessary for the band’s ongoing success. He recalls playing at Atlantic City’s Tropicana Casino in 2008 to see if they’d survive in the US market. They had released Get Ready a year earlier, which saw them sing duets with Smoky Robinson, Martha Reeves and Mary Wilson of Supremes fame. “We went there to see how Americans would respond to four white Aussies singing Motown songs,” Tierney says. “We asked Smoky what he thought of us doing it, [and] he said he writes music for all people to embrace and

On a double block opposite the Yarra River affording country-like vistas and extraordinary serenity, yet less than 10 kilometres and about 30 minutes by bicycle from the city, this iconic pile exhibits innovative design and mixed materials with the panache of a private, haute-couture parade. Millar Robertson Architects and J.S. Lowther Builders pooled skills to replace the existing period house with this one in 2010. Over three levels and under spectacular roof lines, it’s an exercise in luxury from go to whoa. A basement level provides the go, with a three-car garage, rumpus room, gym and a storage area housing four water tanks. The stone-pillared gym has full-length windows to garden outlooks. The middle level spreads wide, encompassing a bedroom, bathroom, laundry, study, family room and open-plan living. The study is fitted for working from home. The kitchen, with integrated appliances, stone benchtops, timber cabinetry and bulkhead, and a walk-in pantry, is splendid in form and function. Polished concrete floors, post-modernist light fittings, a rammed earth wall and terrific, timber joinery give the kitchen, dining and living areas urbanely-earthy flair.
