In 1994, actress Toni Collette made the awkward but terribly likeable Muriel Heslop a seminal character in Australian cinema. A runaway girl who busts a beanbag while canoodling with her boyfriend might not seem like an important figure, but the story and what she represents – feminism, empowerment, individuality – is more than a raucus punchline. As the Melbourne season of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical lights up the stage, meet its star – Natalie Abbott, who plays Muriel – in this week’s cover feature. You’ll be charmed. ●

““I am Anna Blandford ” …and I make greeting cards Our business, Able and Game, started with a Mother’s Day card that my husband Gareth and I did together. I drew it and he helped with the copy. It was of a pregnant woman, and it said ‘thanks for the lift’. If I went to big shopping centres to find a card, there was nothing there that felt like that adult relationship I have with my mum that wasn’t soppy, corny or really earnest. I wanted something that was a little bit funloving. That was in 2008. I spent six months wondering how I could get a card business going. Then we launched in 2009 with a range of cards for Valentine’s Day. The aim is to create something people will look at and identify with. My goal for the perfect card is celebrating the mundane aspects of life, that people might often overlook. When they see it on a card they’re like ‘OK, that’s something really special’. We’ve got a card for Christmas; it’s a woman holding a bottle of wine, which says “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, and a red Christmas, and maybe even a rosé Christmas”. That one’s quite popular, but it took a long time to get it right. We’ve got about 120 shops in Australia that stock our cards, and then we do a market in Fitzroy each weekend, The Rose Street Artists’ Market. We also do bigger event markets throughout the year, like Finders Keepers, Bowerbird, The Big Design Market, and we’ve got an online shop. The cards are probably about half of what we do now. We make mugs, tea towels and tote bags, and calendars and diaries as well. I just recently illustrated a book called I Touched a Cat and I Liked It. We’ve probably sold a few hundred thousand [cards] since we started. We’ve got a Fuji Xerox printer we use to do all our production. We still print them ourselves. Some people say ‘I’ve kept your card on my bedside table’, and that’s quite nice to know. A woman said to me at the market on the weekend, ‘Oh, I can’t stop laughing’. This is the best part of the job, and it can only get better if the person snorts when they laugh. ●

COVER STORY

L

ate last month, Natalie Abbott was on a huge adrenalin rush at Her Majesty’s Theatre, taking in a standing ovation for her role as Muriel Hesslop on the opening night in Melbourne of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical. Rachel Griffiths, who played Muriel’s best friend in the hit Australian movie alongside Toni Collette (Muriel), had come backstage to Abbott’s dressing room to give her tick of approval. At the centre of the toasts for this new Australian musical was praise for Abbott; Muriel, a beloved character, is her first professional role. “Rachel told me how much she loved the show and how she really appreciated Stef’s (Stefanie Jones, who plays Muriel’s best friend Rhonda) and my performance, and that it showed the friendship and the bond that she and Toni Collette had in the movie, and we had mirrored that,” Abbott says. “I think that was one of the most special things that I’ve ever heard, especially coming from Rachel Griffiths.” Backtrack a year from that standing ovation, and Abbott, 23, was working in a surf shop in Sydney, trying to break into the world of musical theatre, receiving knock-backs time and time again. She grew up in the NSW coastal town of Sussex Inlet, initially wanting to be both an actor and singer, and so she chose to study something in the middle – musical theatre. Abbott moved to Sydney to further herself in the genre, and that’s when the tough auditions started. “It’s a hard thing to overcome as a performer, if you haven’t even had a resemblance of a break for a number of years,” she recalls. “It’s kind of hard to put yourself into the mentality that you are good enough, even though you haven’t been validated. “It’s been difficult.” The creator of Muriel’s Wedding the movie (and the stage adaptation), PJ Hogan, remembers the day well when Abbott walked into the audition room, one of nearly 500 hopefuls to try out for the plum stage role of Muriel. “To meet Natalie is to adore her,” Hogan tells Domain Review. “When she came in she was just so open and friendly, and awkward and funny. “We were all just thinking, and sitting and hoping that she could act and sing ... and it turned out she could do both.” Abbott, who had endured rejections in the past, remembers being more nervous outside the audition room than inside. “The creative team were so welcoming and so

supportive,” she says. “They just made me feel like it was OK to go and make a few mistakes. “I think that’s probably part of the reason why I got the role, because I wasn’t perfect at the auditions. I was so scared of what I was doing and they were so supportive.” That day she also made a friend in Hogan, and Abbott and the whole cast are determined to make him proud. “This is his baby, and he holds the story so dear and close to his heart,” she says. “We want to do a good job for PJ, just as much as PJ wants this to be as special as the film was. I think we’ve done that for him. “He is such a loving and caring person. To be doing this with someone as incredible as him and the whole creative team, it’s been amazing.” Muriel’s Wedding The Musical tells the famous fictional story of Muriel Heslop, who yearns for life to be like an ABBA song as she struggles with living in the town of Porpoise Spit. A couple of original ABBA songs feature in the musical score, but most of it has been written by Australian singer-composer Kate Miller-Heidke and musician Keir Nuttall. Heidke will get her very own stage moment next month representing Australia at Eurovision in Tel Aviv. From the show’s script to the costumes and its sense of humour balanced by darkness, it’s very Australian tale, and that is not lost on Abbott.

“I’m a strong believer in Australian works, and this [[Muriel’s Wedding] just goes to show that we do have Australian stories that can be told in an entertaining and fun way,” she says. “People come up to me after the show and tell me how lovely it is to hear our accents up there on stage, our jokes being told, our language, our vernacular written into the script. “It’s purely Australian.” Hogan grew up on the Gold Coast. The town of Porpoise Spit is based on Coolangatta, a Gold Coast suburb on the Queensland and NSW border. Released in 1994, the film – also starring Sophie Lee – was an unexpected hit for Hogan and it won many fans, including in the US. It seems many have identified with the hard-luck story of Muriel, including some of the more highprofile celebrities Hogan has worked with. “Julia Roberts once told me she was Muriel,” he says. “I just nodded my head and was thinking, ‘there is no way you are Muriel.’ “But apparently when she saw the film, it felt like she was watching her story.”

“I think that’s probably part of the reason why I got the role, because I wasn’t perfect at the auditions.” NATALIE ABBOTT

Produced by Australian company Global Creatures, which will soon open King Kong on Broadway, the Melbourne season of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical follows a run in Sydney last year. Hogan hopes that one day it will be on Broadway in New York and, judging by the ticket sales and the reaction in Sydney and Melbourne, it may very well be on its way. After every show and standing ovation, Abbott quietly retreats to her dressing room – always feeling a buzz – and then heads to her rented serviced apartment. “I go back to my apartment and maybe try and think about something other than the show, otherwise I’m going to be up all night dreaming about it,” she says. “I try to distract myself afterwards and then get right back in there the next day.”

Abbott may have been working at a surf shop not long ago, but given her critically acclaimed performance as Muriel, this could be the start of a very special career. There is nothing terrible about Natalie Abbott playing Muriel. In fact it’s something kind of wonderful. ●

hen Old Man Drew opened late last year, 300 people poured through its doors on day one, and it hasn’t stopped since. Dorothy Leech’s family have owned the building since 1968, and it was run by her grandfather as Vic Drew’s Used Trucks. “He was a World War I veteran who fought in the Light Horse,” she says. “He was a man small in stature but big in personality.” Her dad Bill took over the business and, when he passed away three years ago, the family was adamant the building remain intact. “We didn’t want it developed or knocked down,” Leech says. “We didn’t want that to be the end of the story.” Leech, with her daughter Emma and son-in-law Dario Bernardo, have transformed the hoarder’s paradise. “It was full of old truck parts,” she says. “One hundred and 50 tonnes of scrap, 14,000 hubcaps, and truckloads of nuts and bolts.” Each room has been redesigned and reimagined,

turned into an arty, maximalist, collectors' haven. Yesteryear contraptions sit alongside handmade produce. The “winter garden” is a huge, high-ceilinged space with giant hanging baskets of faux fernery and a wall of vintage mirrors, nearly all from the family. Out back is a Garden of Eden-style courtyard, chockers with blooms, cherubic sculptures, a bathtub-turned water garden, topiary conifers shaped into spirals, and mismatched tables sheltered by retro umbrellas. A 1940 Bedford remains in the kitchen garden, now resplendent with produce. Leech says her “furry baby is a very spoilt chihuahua”, so water bowls are dotted throughout the garden, she’s ordered dog beds for winter so four-legged guests won’t have to lie on cold concrete, and dog biscuits are on the chefs’ prep list.

The menu is loaded with easy-pleasers of classic egg brekkies, sangers (such as chicken and brie),and meal-sized salads, including a Greek with fall-apart, slow-cooked saltbush lamb. Lunch is light on the vego front, with only a fab roast pumpkin, kale and quinoa number, but friendly staff happily ditch the meat if requested. The pie is a ripper, topped with house-made flaky puff pastry, a sturdy shortcrust base, and a filling that changes. Do you want hand-cut chips with that? Yep! A mini bowl of crunchy kipflers is a goer, although the petal garnish is overkill. Milkshakes get the small child stamp of approval, green smoothies are a power-packed nutrient boost of kale and more, and two-bite lamingtons are great as a tiny treat or part of a high tea. “We’re loving it,” Leech says, and you can tell. Old Man Drew is a labour of love and the result is utterly charming. ●

esire long hair? It’s a myth that you can grow great lengths without having to look after it. This season’s colour trends look magnificent on a longer mane, but achieving bountiful, beautiful hair requires tender loving care. SCISSOR SISTERS

Your locks need a trim every eight to 12 weeks, at least. Do not skip salon visits, even if you aim to add inches. This will stop split ends, and keep your follicles healthy, which encourages growth and imparts length. If you don’t trim, the hair shaft will split, leaving it damaged, unhealthy, frizzy and thin – the opposite of the full head of hair you seek. The only remedy for split ends is a sharp pair of scissors.

Crawford, 44, is no longer working on Postcards or Kids WB for Nine, but he will still be a regular on The Footy Show, which has been completely revamped for 2019. After impressing executives during his time on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here on rival network Channel 10, the premiership-winning former Hawthorn footy player got the call-up to be part of the relaunched Today format. He will also be part of Wide World Of Sports on Sundays for Nine. “I’m just going to try and balance everything,” he tells Screen Time. “This year I’ll have an opportunity to try a few different shows, and be part of some shows that I really want to be part of.” Crawford says he had an amazing experience in the jungle on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, making it to the final three. “It was something I had always wanted to do,” he says. Sweet temptation The cocoa in chocolate can have health benefits, but are you treating yourself to the right kind?

re you addicted to chocolate? Anyone who knows me knows that this article definitely applies to me. There’s no denying I have a sweet tooth and though I’m pretty good at keeping it in check and maintaining a healthy balance, it turns out there’s actually scientific reasons behind why some of us struggle to skip our daily chocolate fix. Cocoa, which is the main ingredient used in chocolate (not so much milk chocolate but more so

“One of the reasons why we might feel as if we are ‘addicted’ to chocolate is that cocoa also has mood-boosting effects.” in dark) is actually one of the most nutritious foods you can find. It’s high in micronutrients such as magnesium, copper and iron and is also a great source of antioxidants. One of the reasons why we might feel as if we are “addicted” to chocolate is that cocoa also has moodboosting effects. I asked our amazing 28 nutritionist, Steph Wearne, why this is and she said it is because it contains anandamide, which is a neurotransmitter in our brain that is associated with enhancing feelings like joy, bliss and happiness. To top it off, it also contains phenylethylamine

which stimulates our happy hormones (serotonin and dopamine). Before you go wild at the supermarket and load up on the sweets stuff, the nutritional benefits are in relation to cocoa – and most milk chocolates only have around 25 per cent cocoa, if that. The darker chocolates (think 85 to 90 per cent) are the ones to go for if the nutrition benefits are what you’re after. If you’re desperate to eat half a block of milk chocolate a day, it’s safe to say your cravings are likely to be for the sugar as opposed to the cocoa. If your craving is for the 85 per cent dark chocolate, you are far more likely to be after

the feel-good effects that come from cocoa, not the sugar. If you know you’ll struggle to kick your milk chocolate habit, start by making small swaps. Gradually reduce your intake of milk chocolate by substituting it for dark chocolate, working your way to only needing only two pieces of 85 per cent-plus dark chocolate. If you’re relatively new to dark chocolate, you will probably find it quite bitter. Start with a lower percentage and work your way up. Your taste buds will adapt, I promise! ● ● 28bysamwood.com

The lower level adds the minor bedrooms, bathroom, separate toilet, family room and two storage areas. Glass sliders in the family room lead to a terrace and backyard. ● KAY KEIGHERY Agent: Miles, David Blythe 0413 283 303 Price: $1.39 million-$1.45 million Auction: noon, April 13
