Our cover this week celebrates aspects of Victorian life that connect us across the generations. A shared love of AFL binds Sarah Jones and her grandfather Jack Jones, one of the most beloved former players at the Essendon Football Club. Sarah, a football journalist, and her Pop, also a veteran of World War II, will be at the Anzac Day match between the Bombers and Collingwood at the MCG; it’s an occasion that for them carries a gravity as big as a grand final, as it does for many Victorian families. ●

COVER STORY

Anzac Day footy unites veteran Jack Jones and his granddaughter Sarah.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

J

ack Jones, 94, played in seven grand finals for his beloved Essendon Football Club, while granddaughter Sarah Jones, 36, is one of the faces of Fox Footy’s AFL coverage. They share a special bond and love of the Bombers and family, highlighted on Anzac Day. As a teenager, Jack served his country in New Guinea and Bougainville as part of the 24th Infantry Battalion during World War II. It’s a Jones family tradition to walk in the march before heading into the MCG for the traditional Essendon and Collingwood match. This year, Jack will be watching from the stands while Sarah will be at ground level hosting Fox’s broadcast. “Last year, we had 35 of the family there for the march, and all had a great time together,” Jack says. “It’s a sad day when it comes around because we lost 91 in our battalion and 197 wounded. I was one of the lucky ones, with a lot of my mates, and those poor buggers never had the chance to have a family, get married or even see their parents again. “Our battalion was mainly made up of 19-yearolds – I’d never seen a gun, hand grenade or machine gun in those days. It was hard to take in for a while, but I got through it, thank God, and now I’ve got a lovely family, Sarah and all the grandkids and great-grandkids. “But when the bugler blows the Last Post, that’s when I feel it more than anything.” For Sarah, Anzac Day is about reflection and gratitude. “It’s a really special day for our whole family, and because of Pop, we see an example of someone who went to war, fought for his country and was really lucky to come back. None of us would be here if he didn’t return. “There’s gratitude that he was one of the lucky ones and a real sense of pride in what he did because for us. It’s just a world away, what those teenagers did – it’s hard to wrap your head around

just how horrendous it would’ve been. Pop did that as a young man then came home and led a really rich life back in Australia. “Anzac Day is a really special day to celebrate Pop and all the Anzacs. Having a connection with Essendon and the Anzac Day match has really amplified that.” The Joneses were born Bombers. Jack began following Essendon in 1933 and saw Dick Reynolds play his first league game. Thirteen years later he’d play alongside his hero. “I have red in one eye and black in the other,” Jack laughs. “When I came home (from the war), I played in three premierships and seven grand finals with my idol Dick Reynolds. “It was wonderful. I was successful only because I played in a great side. You’ve got to be there at the right time with all the good players.” Sarah loves that her AFL club was chosen for her. “It was in my blood and DNA that I’d barrack for the Bombers. There was no choice – I was always going to be a Bomber. When we were kids, Pop

would take us down to the rooms to meet the players, and that was really cool, and when he worked in the club’s Hall of Fame we’d go along and watch his tours,” she recalls. “Having the footy connection is great because Pop loves footy, I love footy, and a lot of that comes from him. Essendon’s a big interest for him and part of his life that keeps him going strong at 94.” Sarah was eight when her mum died in an accident, but despite living in Echuca, her Melbourne-based Nan and Pop played a very active role in her childhood, never missing a netball final or ballet concert.

T

oday, Jack is Fox Footy’s No.1 viewer, having watched Sarah enter journalism competitions as a child, later do work experience at the Herald Sun and then land her first job in television. “Sarah is very special. The grandkids are equal, and I love them all but Sarah is on television, and no matter what day she is on TV I find her and barrack for her all the time.” Now, Sarah’s heart fills with joy watching her Pop with her daughters Mila, 4, and Halle, 2. “We have a lot of shared interests and spending time with Pop is so much fun and now seeing my daughters get to have a really great relationship with their great-grandfather is something so special,” she says. “They call him ‘Old Poppy’. We visit, and Nan makes pancakes for the girls and Pop tries to steal them, and that’s an ongoing game.” Sarah says anchoring Fox’s Anzac Day football coverage is a career highlight. “Especially as a Bomber fan and someone who really loves the occasion of Anzac Day, it’s only behind finals and the grand finals as the biggest occasion in football. “You get the chill down your spine when they do the ceremony, and it’s even more special because of my connection to Pop.” ●

It’s all part of 26-year-old owner Reiji Honour’s masterplan to create a musically driven cafe with curated tunes. “I spend hours making playlists,” he says, which you can access via Spotify for some old-school grooves. “Music has an amazing effect on mood and the space. I wanted people to feel the energy when they sat down.” It explains Hibiki’s clubby vibe. It’s loud, properly

loud (Honour is installing sound baffles to dial it down a notch), which creates an unmistakable energy, balanced by the white minimalism, warm woods and devil’s ivy snaking along the ceiling. The menu is full of life, too, with unexpected flavour combos based on trad Japanese techniques with a mod, “putaneggonit” cafe spin. Mushrooms on toast appears as garlicky shiitake and shimenji fried in soy butter on soft, spongy triangles of milk toast with a poached egg. But wait, there’s more. Also on the (Robert Gordon) plate is a tempura enoki fan, crisp fried kale, saltbush leaves, dried cranberries, and a pate-like umami bomb of

fermented mushroom mousse. Sounds wacky, yeah? But it works. Black rice bircher is vegan, soaked in coconut and genmaicha (brown rice green tea), with granola, crushed pistachios and a mango-yuzu coulis. Or try Hibiki’s okonomiyaki, a cabbage and spring onion pancake. Honour’s mum is Japanese, and he’s based the recipe on her version. “My mum used to cook traditional foods at home and I’d stand by and watch,” he says. “It’s funny how taste and memories can last for ages.” If brunching from 11.30am onwards, try a bestseller box of lotus root chips amped with Sriracha, Kewpie mayo, and a dusting of dried

seaweed. Of equal flair is the drinks list filled with fresh, zingy juices, matcha-powered smoothies, and house spritzes, such as cold-drip tonic and blood orange. Tea is from Sassafras, and coffee features local hero Industry Beans, along with roasters gaining momentum in Japan. “My brother lives in Japan and he’s helping me source some rockstar roasters from there,” Honour says. “They have a different technique to Australia. It’s a much lighter roast.” Hibiki is Japanese for “to echo” and Honour’s first solo foray into the brunch world seems set to reverberate in Melbourne’s cafe scene. ●

SAM WOOD \ FITNESS

Off to a flying start A positive AM routine sets the foundation for a productive day.

I

am a strong believer that your morning routine sets the tone for the day. I’m not saying you need to get up at 5am, workout, meditate, make all of your weekly meals and walk the dog, all before 8am, but there are definitely some things you can do to set yourself up for a positive and productive day. Your morning routine might be simply waking up with purpose and with a positive intention to achieve what you need to each day. I know that for me, a positive morning routine helps me to begin my day with confidence and a healthy attitude that helps me to handle whatever the day throws at me, without constantly feeling like I’m playing catch up or dealing with unnecessary stress.

Instead of worrying about what others get done in the morning, focus about what you can do to ensure you start the day ahead, not behind. Lots of my 28ers find that working out first thing in the morning is the best way to kick-start their day. Why? Exercise releases endorphins, so you will begin your day with a boosted mood, not to mention a feeling of accomplishment for getting your workout done – and there is no need to stress about squeezing it in later. I also find that morning workouts give me plenty of energy, which helps with my concentration and productivity. One of my favourite quotes is, “If you don’t know

“Exercise releases endorphins, so you will begin your

day with a boosted mood ...” where you are going, that is where you will end up”. This is why I like to start my day by making sure I know what I need to tick off. I will always look at my calendar in the morning to see what meetings or appointments I have that day so that I am prepared and know what needs to get done beforehand. Practising mindfulness is another great way to start your day. For me, this involves a long walk with baby Willow in the pram and dog Hendrix on the lead. I don’t get on my phone and I really enjoy being outdoors, getting some fresh air and spending some quality one-on-one time with little Willow. I know that it might mean setting that alarm five

minutes earlier, but I definitely recommend giving yourself time to either eat or prepare a healthy breakfast for later. For me, I can’t go past a healthy smoothie. Eating a balanced breakfast will give you the brainpower and energy you need to start your day and will prevent reaching for the quick (and often unhealthy) option when the 10am tummy grumbles kick in. I’ll finish by saying that the key here is to find your own morning routine. Once you find what works for you, you’ll never look back. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

There’s an unforced elegance about this house. Plenty of indoor-outdoor connection makes it airy, and the backyard provides the cherry on top for family fun and social activity. The fixtures and finishes are exceptional. The main bathroom features a huge shower, double vanity and freestanding, limestone bath that should spark approval. The splendid kitchen’s stone benchtops, tiled splashback and cabinetry all co-ordinate in snowy white. As for living space, a lounge, rumpus room and open-plan hub provide that in above-average supply. Effectively zoned, immaculately presented and loaded with handy extras, you can move in here and enjoy the good life from day dot. The house was built in 1997. The current owners bought in 2006, lived in it while overseeing the extension and renovation, and have since indulged in more than a decade of what they describe as “beautiful, light-filled living.” Roll down the driveway to the double garage and brick facade. Enter to a foyer preceding the lounge and the main bedroom, with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Pass through the foyer to the open-plan kitchen, meals and living area, off which a hall leads to a bedroom, powder room and the main bathroom, and on to the rear wing of laundry, rumpus room and two bedrooms. One of the latter has an en suite. The lounge woos with a fireplace and a glass wall to landscaped scenery. Karri floorboards glow in the lounge and the open-plan hub, where there’s a study nook. Dreamy in neutral tones, the carpeted rumpus room is more
