There has never been a more crucial time to have a filmmaker like Louis Theroux in our midst, with his documentaries into subcultures, uncomfortable realities, and the complexities of humans who exist on the fringes. As journalism becomes more about quick bites, in an increasingly busy world Theroux’s deep dives into some of the world’s weirdest subjects cover a path less and less travelled. He interviews without judgment, and yet his cynicism – when required – is palpable. He is our cover feature, ahead of a January 2020 Australian tour, including a Melbourne show. ●

ritish documentarian Louis Theroux never planned a career as a storyteller beyond his first journalism gig aged 21 at a San Jose newspaper, and thanks filmmaker Michael Moore for giving him the chance to seek beyond it. Theroux has spent the past 25 years making documentaries about cults, sex workers, UFOs, Nazis and polygamists and takes his viewers where few dare to go – face to face in some rather confronting situations. “I wasn’t that successful working in print. I mean I enjoyed people telling me their story and writing about their obsession in a news article, but after a few years I met Michael Moore and it changed my life,” Theroux says. “Michael saw something in me I didn’t see in myself and sent me off to do a report for his new show TV Nation and it was at that moment I thought ‘maybe this is something I could do’.” When TV Nation ended, Theroux created Weird Weekends for the BBC. It had a successful run between 1998-2000. He went deep into cults and religious groups who believe the world is coming to an end, teasing out the extreme point of view for compelling viewing. Then came When Louis Met from 20002002, interviewing various British
“I have always been interested in forming human relationships with people who are on the fringe.” “The subject of mental health has always interested me, and at times it can be very emotional to be that up close and personal in someone’s journey,” he says. “What I try to do is destigmatise mental health and yet try to find a way to get these people who are vulnerable and acting as normal as they can in their circumstances to not be afraid to show it.” Theroux returns to Australia for a new stage show, Without Limits, after he last visited in 2016. Hosted by Julia Zemiro and featuring special guest Shirley Phelps-Roper, who starred in his 2007 documentary The Most Hated Family in America, Theroux will delve into the making of his documentaries, his encounters with various subcultures and an extraordinary catalogue of work. “In divided times, the sensitive nuanced approached is even more valuable and you have to hold your nerve,” he says of his approach. “You have to go to difficult places and tell your story as best you can.” A compelling exploration of US college rape was a difficult documentary to make, according to Theroux. “The Night in Question was about allegations of sexual assault on campuses in America and following a guy accused of
BBC / RICHARD ANSETT
celebrities. It included a segment with the late BBC radio personality Jimmy Saville who, years after it aired, was charged with 500 sex offences. He died in 2011. “I have always been interested in forming human relationships with people who are on the fringe and building bridges with them with the view of understanding them in a fuller way,” Theroux says. The 49-year-old father of three, who lives in London, was born in Singapore to an American father (writer Paul Theroux) and a British mother. He has written a new book, a memoir Gotta Get Theroux This about his life on camera, the inner machinations of his mind and his odd career choice. His memoir reveals a child who was anxious; admitting it was this that drove him to become totally work focused for a long period of time. “Nowadays, I really take each year as it comes,” he says. “It wasn’t until making Weird Weekends in 1998 for the BBC that I thought I would have a whole career making shows for TV. I have never allowed myself to think this is my permanent job. But I’ll take it.” Theroux has covered topics of mental health – from post-partum psychosis to the confronting nature of dementia and the importance of touch during memory loss – which have even left him lost for words.
rape,” he says. “We didn’t know where the story would go, but knew there was a moral and ethical tension that exists between the urge to respect due process and not rush into judgment and the seriousness of rape. “That’s the heart of the matter in what we do and what I love about documentary making. The fact those two completely valid ethical imperatives do come into conflict sometimes makes the process very difficult at times.” Theroux says making documentaries since US President Donald Trump entered the White House has opened up the playing field. “I think the world has changed a lot since Trump came into power,” he admits. “Trump was a twinkle in the eye of the American voting public all those years ago, and I think now we find a world transformed in his image in certain respects. “For me, as a student of weirdness, I feel as though my niche pursuit of people who are in different ways strange, dangerous or unconventional, have taken the White House hostage, which I think is fascinating. I think because of the nature of what I do, I have a unique insight into that in some way.” ● LOUIS THEROUX WITHOUT LIMITS \ January 19, 2020, the Plenary at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. ● mcec.com.au

WEEKEND NOTES \ BRIGHTON

BRIGHTON FORESHORE
ISTOCK
hen someone says “Brighton”, the suburb immediately conjures colourful bathing boxes, tree-lined streets and affluent bayside living. Just 11 kilometres from the city, the suburb feels worlds away with its relaxed, beachside-chic atmosphere. The established community frequents the shopping strips, and the houses – whether architecturally designed and contemporary or pristine Victorians and Edwardians – are enviable. Many who raised families in the area stay on to slow down by the beach, while their kids now have a small tribe of their own and are eager to stay close to prestigious private schools.
Wo r d s
Brightonites love the outdoors. You’re never far from someone in designer activewear walking by the sand, cycling or on the public golf course. Catching up over coffee at one of many inviting cafes – whether it’s the Little Ox, Brighton School House, St Martin’s or elsewhere – is a weekly rite of passage, while shopping is a breeze on vibrant Church and Bay streets. You’ll find the Dendy Cinema on the former, Brighton Bay Cinema on the latter, and boutiques and restaurants on both. Over the past few years the suburb’s value has continued to grow while the rest of the market has weakened, and with median property prices around the $2 million mark, living in Brighton is certainly an investment. ●

With about 22,000 residents, Doreen is pulling a Pied Piper act, with the majority of the demographic under 44 years of age, and many of them hailing from Melbourne’s inner and middle suburbs. Technically an outer suburbs at 36 kilometres from the city, Doreen’s local infrastructure is geared to provide schools, shops and transport. Parks and wetlands figure in the topography. Custom-built in a 100-per cent owner-occupied street, this contemporary dwelling is larger than most in the neighbourhood, rendering it a candidate for blended-family living as well as a boon for your garden-variety large family. Make that discerning garden variety. The floor plan features six bedrooms, three bathrooms and three living areas. The presentation is impeccable, and the fixtures and finishes are undeniably chic. Out of doors, you get a deck designed for year-round use and a grassed backyard where kids might roll, tumble and practise soccer moves. The facade looks good in soft grey. Pencil pines create vertical contrast against its broad, horizontal reach. Enter via the columned porch to a foyer with cove-ceiling detail. Step left from the foyer to the main bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and spa-bath en suite for two. Sidle down the hall to the central lounge, which has french doors to a side semi-enclosed deck. Past the powder room and storage nook, you get door-free admission to the open-plan hub. North-facing and light-loving, this kitchen-dining-family
