When an influential broadcaster like the ABC’s Jon Faine grants a politician the title of “Australia’s most effective legislator”, that is a handle which sparks attention, regardless of which side of politics you are on. And Fiona Patten is, indeed, that effective legislator. Her party had a name change and the original moniker, in itself, sparked water cooler conversation. However, Patten continues to beat the drum for issues that draw Melburnians into a debate. Journalist Peter Wilmoth met the Reason Party leader, who feels she is no longer speaking from the fringes, but in the mainstream. ●

““I am Ben Hannah ” … and I am a gravedigger You don’t really set out to be a gravedigger. If you do, there’s something wrong with you. When I went for the job, my friend was a gravedigger here (at Springvale Botanical Cemetery) and I was packing shelves at Safeway, working 10pm until 6am. I was just fed up with that, I was becoming nocturnal. I thought, ‘I’ll see how this goes for six or 12 months’. Almost 22 years later, I’m still here. Hollywood portrays gravediggers as weird people who do weird things. But the people in this industry are some of the funniest people I’ve met. They counter the serious side with humour; it’s a kind of coping mechanism. They’re really quality people. I couldn’t tell you how many gravesites I’ve done over the years; it would be thousands and thousands. We probably average eight a day. There’s generally 12 full-time gravediggers here at Springvale, split up into two crews. We work at nine sites, including Melbourne General Cemetery, Brighton and St Kilda. It can be tough work, but it’s more about the elements – we’re out there rain, hail or shine. I really like working outside, I don’t mind the weather. We dig for size, and it depends on the size of the coffin or the casket and whether the grave is for one, two or three people. We set them up, and backfill once the service is complete. We do three different depths: five, seven and nine feet. We’ve got a five-tonne excavator here at the site, it’s actually got a fair bit easier. But sometimes the excavator won’t fit down narrow paths, so we’re still doing hand digs and still doing heavy lifting, and a lot of shovelling. It does take its toll with sore wrists, shoulders and backs. You’re constantly going down ladders and we’re in and out of graves. I had a grave collapse years ago on a trainee. He was fine but it gives you the willies. The rules have changed in the last five or 10 years – we still get in all the time but now the grave has to have shoring. We provide a service at a tough time. We try to sit out of sight when the funeral’s happening. Most people would never even see us. Everyone’s going to die eventually, so I don’t think much about it myself any more. Your team makes a massive difference – who you surround yourself with – because it is a fairly ordinary job. We’re all mates. ●

COVER STORY
The voice of softly spoken politician Fiona Patten has resonated, and grows louder as the state election looms.
T
hree years into her career as a “mainstream” politician, it seems Fiona Patten’s time has come. Well, her ideas, anyway. Marriage equality, medicinal cannabis, legislative protection for women visiting abortion clinics, safe drug-injecting rooms, all issues Patten has long been vocal and passionate about, and are either already law or at the centre of the conversation. The Upper House MP and leader of Victoria’s Reason Party – known more colorfully as the Australian Sex Party until last year – has been a thought-leader and agitator on issues that once may have struggled for cut-through but are now well in the mainstream. It seems the community and the parliament has caught up. “A lot of people say I have nudged them,” Patten says. “It’s been more the politicians than the people (who needed urging). The people have been ready for change. Same-sex marriage survey - a perfect example where the community had already moved on and we couldn’t get our parliament to move on. “Medicinal cannabis – our community has moved on. They want access to it, yet the politicians are still resisting it. Having people like me in here enables that voice to be heard possibly in a more effective way.” We are having coffee in the Strangers’ Dining Room at Parliament House. Patten is as natural and unaffected as on her arrival here in 2014, fresh from her lobbying days with the Eros organisation. The only change is a realisation that making laws means compromise, and she’s fine with that. “In some areas being in parliament has tempered me,” she says. “Where I would have aimed for here (points high), I’m really happy to reach here (lower). It’s about not letting the perfect get in the way of the good. I seem to say that every day these days. “When I put up the safe access zone private members bill I think I thought, ‘I’ll put up a bill and everyone will vote for it and it will become a law’. Of course, governments don’t like other people making the laws while they’re in government.” She sees her role as “presenting solutions for governments to adopt”. ABC broadcaster Jon Faine has referred

to Patten as “without doubt, Australia’s most effective legislator”. Patten says: “I have put up three private members bills and they have all become law. Safe access zones – creating 150-metre zones around abortion clinics – the ride-sharing bill to regulate Uber, and the supervised injecting centre bill.” She was disappointed at discussion and a government backflip around which drugs would be allowed in the safe injecting rooms, which opened in North Richmond last month. “The objective was, ‘We don’t care what you’re injecting, in fact, we don’t even know what you’re injecting because you don’t even know. You’re buying it from some dude on the street. You have no idea what you’ve got.’ The premise was to keep people who are injecting safe. And it didn’t matter what they injected. (And) how do you police that? Are you going to test the drugs as people come in? There are hundreds of safe injecting rooms around
The rule of law the world and people use all sorts of substances in those centres and the objective is to keep them safe.” The centre opened metres from a primary school, which caused some negative responses. “I am delighted it has the full support of the school,” she says. “Putting this close to a school where the needle-exchange program has been for decades, where people are injecting in the streets, is actually going to increase the safety for that school. “We looked at lots of different locations as to where to put it, but you’ve got to put it where the use is happening.” Patten says her biggest surprise about politics was the strong level of camaraderie. “I think I looked at it like question time. Right from the start I realised it was quite different. I don’t think I fully understood the intimacy of the Legislative Council – it’s 40 people. It’s like a big classroom. Not surprisingly, you spend a lot of time with them.”

She says one day she was asked to head to a highlevel meeting. “I went in and there were five women in there from all parties, saying, ‘OK, what can we do to make sure we protect abortion laws in Victoria from any attack?’ We sat down and worked really well together. I went on to introduce the safe access zone legislation and I had great support from around the chamber.” Patten also realised quickly the power she had. “I don’t think I fully appreciated the position that I had, that my vote was necessary and that I would quite often be the deciding vote on legislation. That gives you some power but also an incredible responsibility. We have to be across every piece of legislation. “In our office we are across everything because our vote is often critical.”

atten was also deeply involved in the assisted dying legislation, whereby in November, Victoria became the first Australian state to legalise voluntary assisted dying. She says playing a role in developing the policy that went on to become law was the greatest privilege she’d had. I asked Patten about the story that has swept the world – the “#Metoo” movement. “Overall, it has changed us for the good,” Patten says. “As women we are a lot more conscious that we can speak out. We know that the under-reporting of sexual assault is enormous. It’s the notion that there is a voice. “On a much smaller side, I think it sometimes has confused us as to what is correct social behavior. I’ve spoken to male friends who say, ‘I don’t know whether I’m allowed to hug someone any more’. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I do think it’s created some confusion as to what is appropriate behaviour, and we need to muddle our way through. “I think we are still getting to the uncomfortable bits of that. It’s very easy to talk about the Weinsteins and the Rolf Harrises. It’s when we start putting it back into the familiar area – we know that most assaults and poor behaviour against women happens in the home, but we don’t like to talk about that. We like to talk about workplace, stranger danger and the very tragic death of Eurydice Dixon. “We need to be educating our men from a very young age. We do not need to be telling our women they can’t walk home at night.” ●

roadcaster Cameron Daddo remembers coming back to his Sydney home earlier this year after spending 10 days living on the streets, and just standing inside the front door, for what seemed like forever. Daddo, 53, had just had what he calls the most profound experience of his life, enduring a period of homelessness – alongside other prominent Australians – as part of the upcoming SBS show Filthy Rich and Homeless. He had no money and no smart phone, released from the comfort of his home to fend for himself. “I know when I walked into my house and closed the front door, I just stood there for quite a long period of time,” he says. “I was just so grateful that I had a front door to close. I left people out there who do not.” Daddo, who has a Monday to Friday night radio show on Smooth FM, says he will take the experience to the grave. “It lit a fire in me, that’s for sure,” he said. “It changed my life.” Daddo is one of our most recognisable actors, part of the famous show business family that has been part of Australian life for decades. He spent 25 years in Los Angeles, and worked on a number of big shows, including the lead in the Melrose Place spin-off Models Inc, in the 1990s. When he came back to Australia over five years ago, one thing shocked him.

“When I returned to Australia I could not believe the proliferation of homelessness,” he says. “I couldn’t believe it – something was going on here and it wasn’t right. “It was like Santa Monica in Los Angeles.” Daddo is correct that Australia’s big cities – Melbourne and Sydney,

things. You don’t have a front door to close, so you never relax. “The longer you are out there, the harder homelessness is to climb out of.” This second season of Filthy Rich and Homeless, a three-part series, includes Sydney socialite Skye Leckie, author Benjamin Law,
politician Alex Greenwich, and singer Ali Simpson. The show aims to shut down stereotypes about what it is like to be homeless, and challenge the audience’s opinions. Daddo is very keen to point out it is not a reality show, but more a documentary, which he hopes will get people talking. It is an experience that took him a while to get over, Daddo says. “It was very emotional. I couldn’t talk about it for a while, because it was such an assault on the senses. ‘I just chose not to speak about it too much, because anything I said felt like I was belittling the experience. “Words could not cover it.” ● FILTHY RICH AND HOMELESS \ SBS, August 14-16, 8.30pm ● Cameron Daddo hosts Mellow Music on 91.5 Smooth FM, weeknights.

ore often than not we can identify the cause of our mood swings. We’re stressed because we’re on a tight deadline, we’re tired because the baby just won’t sleep, we’re feeling anxious about a meeting, we’ve had an argument with a friend, or sometimes it’s just life in general. There are always factors outside of our control that determine how we feel at any given moment. There are also times when you’re feeling flat and you just can’t seem to figure out why. What you might not know is that often this can be due to food. I know it might sound strange, but if you think this sounds like it could be the case for you, let’s go through some simple links between mood and food.
“... fill your plate with the likes of brown rice, peas and broccoli, and snack on raspberries and almonds to feel those mood-boosting benefits.” PROCESSED FOOD EQUALS GRUMPY MOODS \
When I go bananas on the treats (which I will admit does happen from time to time; have you ever tried to stop at one square of Cadbury?!) I often find that afterwards I’m grumpy, tired and easily irritated. This isn’t due to disappointment that I’ve finished the block (okay, maybe a bit) but is due to the spike and crash in blood sugar levels that comes from too many refined carbs and too much sugar. When you overdo it on processed treats, your blood sugar levels can spike, but then crash as your body works to bring them back down. This can leave us tired, irritable and therefore not a fun companion. SKIPPING MEALS MEANS MORE THAN BEING HANGRY \ Much like consuming processed foods,
skipping meals can affect your blood sugar control and can cause a serious spike in your mood.
When we don’t eat often enough, we’re playing with these blood sugar levels and this is when ‘hanger’ takes over. But that’s not the end of it. Skipping meals also means we’re more likely to overeat when our next meal rolls around, and depriving ourselves in this way can impact our bodies’ ability to absorb food in the long run.
Now that you’re convinced of the impact that food can have on your mood, take a look at a few foods guaranteed to lift your spirits. FILL UP WITH FIBRE \ Complex carbs and vegetables are awesome sources of fibre that slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream and increase serotonin production, so fill your plate with the likes of brown rice, peas and broccoli, and snack on raspberries and almonds to feel those moodboosting benefits. PACK WITH PROTEIN \ Including a protein
TRYPTOPHAN WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR DIAL \ Our bodies need tryptophan, one of the most important amino acids, to produce our happy hormone serotonin. When we’re trying to include more tryptophan in our diets, foods like turkey, chicken, eggs, and milk are all awesome sources. While refined carbs can also be rich in tryptophan, it’s best to steer clear of this source as they only provide us with a quick and temporary mood boosting fix.
component in every meal can slow down the body’s absorption of carbs, which can help lift your mood and energy, even hours after you’ve eaten. SIP SMARTER \ OK, I know this technically isn’t
a food, but when we’re trying to stay happy and healthy, reducing our intake of stimulants and depressants such as caffeine and alcohol is a must. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

No features have been spared in this property’s ultramodern design, which includes an automatic underground garage, uninterrupted city skyline views, high-end appliances, sparkling interiors and a private entertaining area. Architecture is by local practice Architecton. The floorplan spans three levels separating the living, sleeping and working areas of the home. The open-plan living-dining-kitchen area on the ground floor is the main hub of the house. Polished concrete on the floors and wall panels around the integrated Escea smart fireplace add texture to the white walls and glossy kitchen cabinetry. Also in the kitchen are stone benchtops and appliances by Smeg and Miele. Full-height retractable glass doors allow the living room to be completely opened to the outdoor entertaining area featuring decking, bluestone paving, a wall water feature and landscaped garden beds. Also on the ground floor is an air-conditioned guest bedroom at the front of the home for visitors’ privacy. Next door is a large powder room. An industrial-style staircase leads to the remaining bedrooms, all of which are individually air-conditioned. The master bedroom is at the rear adjoining a balcony overlooking the entertaining area and the undisturbed city skyline in the distance. This room also includes a walk-in wardrobe and a heated en suite with a marble double vanity. The other two bedrooms share a main tiled bathroom on the floor with a shower and spa bath. Next to the double garage with internal entry point on the basement level of the property is the laundry, storeroom
