“Everyone has a story of their Boxing Day, which makes it incredibly special.” That’s fast bowler Pat Cummins’ summary of how the Boxing Day Test at the MCG belongs to the fans, just as Melbourne Cup Day was gifted to the people of Victoria (as a public holiday), recognising its stature in our sporting folklore. Cummins understands that as special as it is for a player to wear the baggy green, it’s equally an occasion for the tens of thousands who make the journey to the MCG – an annual rite of passage. I spoke to Cummins as the summer of cricket heats up. ●

COVER STORY

Fast bowler Pat Cummins reflects on the summer sporting rites that bring Australians together.

P

laying a childhood game of “classic catches” in the crashing surf – a ritual for sun-kissed Australian kids – put fast bowler Pat Cummins in good stead to stare down the world’s toughest batsmen. Burning soft feet on searing concrete in the dash from the car park to the foreshore, and diving for the onslaught of balls from his four siblings, were the earliest tests of mettle for the Australian cricketer. Cummins approaches the home Test matches this summer – part of the inaugural Domain Test Series against India, starting at Adelaide Oval on December 6 – with the same verve as that boy on the beach. Last summer was the 25-year-old’s first home Test series. Stepping onto the verdant MCG for the Boxing Day Test, enveloped by a cauldron of up to 90,000 screaming fans, is a “spine-tingling” experience, Cummins says. And, with the typical humility of an athlete who wears the baggy green, he says it’s not just special for himself. “As a kid, our ritual was waking up on Boxing Day morning, having leftovers for breakfast and turning on the TV and all watching that first session of the Boxing Day Test,” Cummins says. “I remember, as a kid, that was the only time I would get nervous for the players – Boxing Day morning. To be out in the middle of it now is something else. “It is more than just a day, it’s also the days leading in – all the fans walking around the city, getting pumped up. For some attending the Boxing Day Test is a bucket-list item they have been wanting to tick off for 20 years, and for others it is their annual event. Everyone has a story of their Boxing Day, which makes it incredibly special.” Passion for the cricket team is embedded in Australians’ bone marrow. When John Howard was prime minister, he said his job ranked second in importance to the nation’s cricket captain. “Knowing you have 20-odd million people living and breathing the Australian cricket team is incredible, and at the same time it adds a bit of

pressure,” Cummins says. “It is something that we have become more and more conscious of – to not lose sight of how special it is to play for Australia, and how many people we are playing for and want to make proud. “It is probably the one sport in Australia that brings everyone together for six months of the year.” Cummins was born and raised in New South Wales, but is on the road for most of the year as a key member of the team’s explosive pace line-up. However, one of his passions is rooted in the comforts of home – property. Hand-in-hand with that love of real estate is Cummins’ new role as Domain’s first ambassador.

Paceman Pat Cummins in full flight, delivering a thunderbolt down the wicket for Australia.

GETTY IMAGES

Cummins describes the team and its support structure as a “big cricket family that travels the world together” – staff, players and their relatives. Cummins speaks of the other core Test team bowlers – Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon – with the same respect and affection he might of his own siblings. “The bowlers are tight and always are,” Cummins says. “Josh is cool, calm and collected all of the time. Nothing is ever stressful or a worry. Starcy is good fun because he sometimes gets a little bit grumpy. “Nath Lyon is always nervous; he is the most experienced of us, taking over 300 Test wickets, but

before every over he bowls he is biting his fingernails. I hope I am a bit light-hearted.” Cummins makes a point to share that joy with fans. He is a founding contributor to the website Players Voice, capturing a personal perspective on life in sport, which he says is sometimes not divulged by professional athletes who may have their guard up at press conferences. “Players Voice approached me about doing some stories and offered the unique idea of telling a story exactly as we wanted to tell it, with more insight beyond the normal articles,” he says. “I can tell stories I never thought of telling, and I love reading about the other athletes as well.”

C

ummins says readers have reached out to share their similar experiences of some of the candid topics he’s written about. One of his columns discussed his mother’s breast cancer fight and, as one of five children, how important family has been in influencing his character. “Our weekends revolved around sports even when we were on holidays – at the beach, playing cricket or kicking a footy,” he says. “How it has probably shaped me as a person, and how that leads into me as a cricketer, is that being part of a big family keeps you fairly grounded – you can’t get too ahead of yourself before one of your siblings pulls you back in line. “I was the competitive child trying to stick it to my brothers, and that has probably come into my cricket a little bit – trying to have a crack, and not taking myself too seriously. “In a big family everything is pretty relaxed, you are never the one with all the attention, it is always shared around, and you go through a lot of things together. I hope that is a similar way to how my teammates see me. “One of the biggest things about playing for Australia is that it is never just about you – you go back to grade cricket and the whole club is behind you, and your parents, siblings, aunties, uncles and cousins. “Everyone rides the wave with you.” ●

f you’re not sure what to expect when you walk into design store Criteria, entering comes as a surprise. Located down a graffiti-peppered street in Cremorne, one is greeted by an unusual, curated collection of furniture that you can’t always identify. Is that a lamp? (No, it’s a side table.) Is the curiously shaped wooden chair for sale? (Of course, but expect to splash out with four figures.) Criteria, the brainchild of American transplant Rachael Fry, prides itself on the eclectic, the hardto-get and the investment pieces. Just don’t expect budget shopping. Says Fry: “The cheapest thing we have here is a bottle opener for $150. The most expensive? Um ...” You’d better not ask. Fry is the first to admit that if you’re comparison shopping for a new dining table, hers is probably not the store for you. Their range of designers includes Baxter (Italy), De La Espada (Portugal) and the work of local design studio Broached Collections. “We’re a showroom and a gallery, representing both production work and edition work,” she says. “But we’re really a space to inspire and show progressive work, and it’s through the lens of contemporary American and European design. We bring it together through the idea that our pieces

Invest in the eclectic should be sculptural by nature and have integrity in materiality and concept.” Among the store’s stars, Manhattan-based Gabriel Hendifar and Jeremy Anderson, of Apparatus, shine brightly. In Australia last month to launch their latest collection, they are good representatives of Criteria’s approach to design. Metal finishes are done by hand; they also use unusual materials, such as horse hair. One of Fry’s favourite memories, since opening Criteria’s four-and-a-half years ago, centres upon one of their products. “A woman purchased an Apparatus light from me for her 40th birthday, and she’d obviously thought long and hard about what she wanted. When she hung it, she rang me and started crying, because she said it was so beautiful and she felt so lucky she had it. I don’t take for granted that I’m facilitating this; it made my year.” For Apparatus’ Hendifar, the joy is shared. “In Melbourne, there’s a design-savvy audience

who have a real hunger for our products. Whenever we launch a new collection, our first orders come from Australia. Maybe it’s because of the distance – it’s harder to get things here – or maybe as an audience, Australians are more comfortable to order online from an afar. They’re early adopters.” For Fry, who had an art direction background when she moved to Melbourne with her Australian husband and now six-year-old daughter (they since had a son, now two), her adopted city has proved to be an unexpected mix of cutting-edge approach and newly acquired comfort. (For instance, the first thing she does when she arrives back here from abroad is head to a cafe for a hit of coffee culture.) The one way she’d like to sway Melbourne dwellers? “I would love to see more use of colour and taking more risks, and move away from safe and grey and beige. Have some fun.” ● ● criteriacollection.com.au

hen Glaston Toft hits the stage in the musical Jersey Boys night after night, he knows what he is doing. Remarkably Toft, who plays Nick Massi in the long-running Broadway musical about the life and times of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, has performed the show more than 1400 times since 2009. Toft, alongside Ryan Gonzalez as Frankie Valli, Cameron MacDonald as Tommy DeVito, and Thomas McGuane as Bob Gaudio, are in the latest production of Jersey Boys that starts on February 23 next year at the Regent Theatre. “It was a bit surreal,” Toft tells Domain Review on returning to the new production of the musical after doing so many shows previously. “So much of the stuff was so in my body that I

knew it so well, and other bits I had no idea. Then I did it once or twice, and everything came back.” Since it began in 2005, Jersey Boys has become a musical phenomenon around the world, including in Australia. Despite much of the audience already having seen the show, it doesn’t matter; they still come back for more. Why is this? “I think you can put it down to the fact the music is timeless, and the fact that it is a true story helps,” Toft says. Sitting with the four new cast members of the show in a Melbourne cafe after a long day on the road, they bounce off each other like they could actually be in their own boy band. That rapport comes from performing sometimes up to eight shows a week, a gruelling song-and-

dance spectacular. “When we go out on stage, we get to pretend to be in this group with massive hits, and we kind of live that,” MacDonald, who plays Tommy DeVito, says. “We kind of have a shared experience anyway, so we take that with the guys on stage. It’s a really bonding experience.” Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons began in 1960 after a few false starts and different names. They have some of the most loved and well-played hits on radio in history, including their version of I’ve Got You Under My Skin, and original works Sherry and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. Valli’s unique and distinctive voice is not an easy one for any professional singer to replicate. Gonzalez, who plays Valli, didn’t just walk on stage sounding like the American superstar.

“It took a lot of one-on-one time with our musical director,” he says. “He really helped me, told me how to create that nasal sound. It’s really quite intense. Frankie has three voices, I think. “He has his falsetto side, then the kind of nasal younger side, and as it gets older he develops his voice and it becomes a lot thicker. “So, it’s definitely a challenge to keep up with the vocal stamina throughout the show.” For the fourth member of the cast Thomas McGuane, who plays Bob Gaudio. This is his first major role after studying at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts. What a dream first professional role it is. “It feels incredible,” he says. “I thoroughly enjoy the show, its historical accuracy. “The fact that we are playing real people is one of my favourite parts to it, and it’s just amazing music to sing every night.” ●

ith Christmas around the corner, I thought gininfused oysters would make the perfect entree for Christmas lunch with your loved ones. With little preparation and washing up, these work a treat for the host. Sometimes, preparing the family lunch is less enjoyable because of the preparation and washing up. I like to do as much in advance as possible so I can sit with my guests and enjoy the day. Sydney rock oysters are my favourite because of their golden colour, creaminess, tasty brine and beautiful aftertaste. I’ve to paired them with some gin – one of my favourite drinks, especially on a sunny day. But, have a play with other botanicals or herbs. In this recipe, I’ve used thyme but rosemary or parsley will work well, too. Other spirits or aperitifs that can be used are Pernod or vodka. Pair the Pernod with some tarragon, and you’re on a winner. I like serving the oysters with Bollinger Special Cuvee, but it also pairs beautifully with a glass of Chablis. ●

earing seagulls chatter makes it sound like summer holidays, or at least a leisurely weekend by the seaside. But it’s just another Tuesday in Albert Park Village, off tram route 1. Situated opposite Beaconsfield Parade and the waters of Port Phillip Bay, Victoria Avenue starts with a spread of restaurants lying dormant for the night to come, although it’s just a short amble up to where a lively hub of activity reveals itself. Dogs are resting outside cafes, looking as laid-back as a Saturday, and a hole-in-the-wall coffee spot (which proves to be the newly opened Snow White Bakery) complements the seaside village charm. Stop by for a salted-caramel brownie and a warm-up fireside, before continuing your lazy weekday stroll. Here in Albert Park, stores convincingly masquerade as quaint houses. Only at second glance

Wo r d s

is it realised most are shops and cafes. Studio Kingfisher, a handcrafted jewellery store, is easy to miss with its white picket fence, but it would be a shame if you did. Along with their small selection of jewellery and accessories, you can attend classes where you can learn the craft yourself. There is also wellness cafe Projuice, which appears as an envy-worthy two-storey family home, but instead turns out to be a vegetarian and vegan food space, also offering health workshops. There are many home-like spots here, including the Avenue Bookstore in the thick of the village. Without the regular rumble of trams, it is easy to forget it’s Melbourne at all. To finish the day on a beachy note (disregarding any sort of wind with a chill factor), have an icecream and a walk on the sand. Such a holiday. ●

Little ways to achieve big results

here’s no denying that weight loss doesn’t come easily to everyone. It takes hard work and discipline – and this is what makes it so rewarding. But the thing is, weight loss doesn’t have to be as challenging as what most people think. It doesn’t have to mean turning your life upside down and putting in 110 per cent effort to get results. On my 28 program, we take a much more sustainable approach by introducing smaller changes over time that teach you the healthiest habits for long-term, sustainable success. Here are four easy steps you can take that don’t require a huge amount of effort but can make a big difference to your health and weight loss. UP YOUR VEGGIE COUNT \ If you’re looking to

clean up your diet, then increasing your veggie intake should be your number one priority. If you aim to make at least half of each meal consist of vegetables, by the time you add some protein, healthy fats and a small amount of complex carbohydrates, there isn’t a lot of room in your diet for much else. Don’t just stop at meals either. If you’re aiming to get in as many vegetables as you can, then using snacks to do this is an awesome idea. Try veggie sticks with dip, savoury muffins, green smoothies or whip up some mini-frittatas to up your veggie count. DOUBLE UP \ When I’m cooking a healthy but

CUT YOUR COOKING TIME \ With so many busy people on my program, and as a busy person myself, I understand that in reality not everyone has time to cook their meals from scratch. That’s why using pre-cooked grains, canned legumes and frozen veggies is incredibly useful to help cut cooking time while ensuring you stick to a health routine. Frozen veggies in particular are actually very nutritious, as freezing is equivalent to snap-locking the nutrients in, when compared with veggies that may have travelled many miles and lost a lot of their nutritional value before they get to you.

DITCH THE DRINK \ If soft drinks, juices, energy

drinks, alcohol or multiple coffees a day are your thing then a simple but effective healthy change to make is to swap some of these for water. My tip is to start small and build your way up rather than going completely cold turkey. If you drink two soft drinks and two coffees a day then just pick one to replace with water for two weeks. The following two weeks swap a second drink to water and so on until you are drinking mainly water, or, in an ideal world, only water. Herbal tea is another good option you can use to replace soft drinks, juices, energy drinks, alcohol or coffee as they add to your hydration for the day, plus have plenty of other benefits. There you have it. Four lazy, but effective, changes that you can make to your routine. They may seem small but trust me – implementing these into your life can help you see big results over time. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

There’s a country feeling to the neighbourhood around this contemporary two-storey home. On a gum tree-lined street just steps from Steele Creek, the property feels distinctly removed from the city despite being just a short drive from public transport and shops and a walk away from schools. The floor plan orientates as many rooms as possible to the north for optimum natural light, starting with a formal living room and study with built-in desk off the entryway (accessible from both the front door and internal double garage entrance). Polished timber floors begin at the front door and extend throughout the entire ground floor. A central hallway flows past the laundry (with external door), powder room and storage space before opening out to the spacious living domain of the kitchen, dining area and lounge room. Large windows on the north and west walls allow natural light to stream into the space.
