It’s rare for a journalist to demonstrate business acumen – we are not known for being adept at any venture that requires a balance sheet – but Melbourne Storm chief executive officer Dave Donaghy is an exception, in more ways than just this. A born leader, the 36-year-old former journo was the youngest CEO in the NRL when he took the Storm helm at 32, and has helped to produce results that stand alongside any sensational Billy Slater try. He is a positive force to be reckoned with, driving success even in an AFL-mad town. Reporter Luke Dennehy met Donaghy for this week’s feature. ●

COVER STORY

A

t age 32, Dave Donaghy was named chief executive officer of Melbourne Storm – the youngest CEO, by a long shot, in the National Rugby League and the club’s history. Born in the central Queensland town of Gladstone – NRL heartland – it’s been a speedy rise to the top for Donaghy, who had arrived in Melbourne little more than a decade earlier to work as a rugby league journalist. The chief job could have been a daunting prospect for Donaghy, now 36, who back then was the same age as some of the team’s star players, and had just become a father for the second time, with daughter Pippa. However, in his switch from the press to sports administration Donaghy had amassed a long history of experience at the club, including a stint as the media manager, steadying the ship during the salary cap scandal, which broke in 2010. He went on to a role as general manager of the Brisbane Lions in the AFL, but returned to the Storm three years later; within two years of his homecoming, he was CEO. “I think because I was in the industry, it didn’t feel foreign to me from that point of view,” Donaghy says of being appointed so young. “But I must say, when I look back at that time, maybe they were mad to have appointed a 32-year-old. But I’m glad I got over that and took the opportunity when it was presented.” Some of the high profile backers of Donaghy, including one of Storm’s major shareholders Gerry Ryan of caravan company Jayco, continue to be huge supporters and mentors. “I had a lot of encouragement internally, and certainly the board said to me that we’ve all been very fortunate in our business careers to have some success, and at some point in our career someone gave us an opportunity – over to you,” he says. They wouldn’t be regretting their decision. In many ways Donaghy has had the Midas touch with Storm, Melbourne’s only NRL side, helping to implement a plan by the major shareholders, chairman Bart Campbell, Matt Tripp and Ryan. As well as winning the NRL premiership in 2017, since Donaghy started as CEO he has led his team to an extraordinary boom off-field. Those achievements include increasing the club’s membership from 15,000 in 2015 to 25,000 fans and growing, 18,000-plus average match crowds at AAMI Park, and turning the business

A focus on culture and character has helped a young CEO recalibrate the fortunes of Melbourne’s NRL club.

side of the club from million-dollar losses to clocking a profit. A modest Donaghy puts it down to a team effort, not his leadership. “There are only 16 of these jobs in the country,” Donaghy says. “So in terms of a dream job, yes it is. But it’s an amazing job because of the people we have got here.” There is no question that the wider NRL has an image problem related to the off-field behaviour of some of its players, including former Dally M medal winner Ben Barba of the North Queensland Cowboys, who was recently banned for life by the league after allegations of domestic violence. However, at Melbourne Storm there is a culture that is envied across the NRL. Donaghy and his team have carefully worked at how they deal with the reality of a team full of young men, many of them away from home for the first time. “We have three full-time staff in the players’ wellbeing space and we’ve had a psychologist who has been part of staff for the past two years and she is outstanding,” Donaghy says. “They are all young men, they’re all exposed to challenges throughout that period of life, and how they deal with it is really important. “When they come to the club we are putting them in the right environments, we are training them up and educating them on expectations, what’s required of them – not just being a Storm player, but being a role model.” Proudly walking through their offices at AAMI Park on to the vast, empty stadium, Donaghy speaks warmly of the club’s family atmosphere and its attitude to “bad eggs”. “Talent’s one thing, but character is probably more important,” Donaghy says. “You’ve got to have talent to play the game,

Wo r d s

there is no doubt about that, but you have to have the right character to fit in here. You need to buy into what the football club’s about. If you buy in, you succeed.” In the very old days, the players’ common room may have had a fridge full of Victoria Bitter in the corner, but now the space is full of kids’ toys. “It’s so great to hear kids’ voices screaming through the building,” Donaghy says. “Often they are a young [Cameron] Smith, or a young [Billy] Slater; there have always been kids floating around Storm for as long as it’s been in existence, and long after I’ve gone it needs to continue because family is such an important part of the club.” The legacy left by the now-retired champion Billy Slater and former long-time player Cooper Cronk is not just of on-field statistics but also a contribution to the values and culture at the Storm. Like Donaghy, they are natural leaders. Add to the mix the loyalty and passion of the long-time coach Craig Bellamy and captain Cameron Smith, and there is a lot for the young players to be inspired by. Being a CEO in any sporting club, especially at a club like Storm where there is a lot of interstate travel, is very demanding. As well as young Pippa, Donaghy and his wife Sharyn have a son Hugh, five. “You can’t do this job by yourself,” he says. “I’ve got this gratitude for her and the kids and how they’re able to understand it’s a pretty [demanding] job. “She is very tolerant.” ● NRL SEASON 2019 \ Melbourne Storm opens the season against the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday, March 14, at AAMI Park, Melbourne. ● melbournestorm.com.au

ournalist Monica Tan had just hit her early 30s, had travelled the world and was revelling in her dream job at The Guardian when a crisis of sorts struck. Despite the odd trek in Tasmania and trips to Perth and Melbourne for work, the self-declared “hipster, Asian girl townie” barely knew the country of her birth; that vast expanse of Australia beyond the urban fringes was a huge mystery to her. She set about changing that by chucking in her job, stuffing her Toyota RAV4 full of water tanks, jerrycans and sleeping bags and setting off on a sixmonth, 30,000-kilometre trip through some of the most remote parts of the continent. Stranger Country reads as a highly entertaining travelogue and a searing critique of race relations in Australia, and the ignorance many

have about key aspects of our Indigenous history. We feel as though we’re in the passenger seat as Tan takes us to Lake Mungo, Kakadu, the Kimberley, the Lurujarri Trail, Alice Springs and Darwin. She absorbs Aboriginal culture and traditions, while learning about the dispossession, massacres and other shameful episodes of our past. She gives a great insight into the important role Chinese Australians played in building the country,. Lighter moments abound as Tan comes across

EDUCATION & INNOVATION

A spiritual partnership Catholic Education Week 2019 recognises those who will shape the future.

A

t the start of the year, more than 150,000 Catholic students across Melbourne took the first steps on their educational journey, or eagerly returned to school after the long summer break. Nearly one in four Victorian students are part of the Catholic education system attending more than 500 schools across the state. This year, two new primary schools in Wollert and Sunbury joined the growing number of Catholic schools, and will celebrate Catholic Education Week for the first time in 2019. The annual event is an opportunity for all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne to celebrate their Catholic identity, the pivotal role they play within their community and the strength of the sector. “Catholic education is committed to providing

quality, accessible faith and values-based schooling to all those who want it,” says Catholic Education Melbourne acting executive director Jim Miles. “We believe in a partnership with parents. Catholic education provides choice, allowing parents to find schools that best meet their children’s needs. Growing school numbers make it clear families appreciate the option.” The theme of Catholic Education Week 2019 is “Growing Young in Christ”, recognising the spirit, optimism and energy of the young people who attend Catholic schools. As well as a series of major events on this theme, the week will be marked by schools arranging activities to bring together students, staff, families and communities. The Catholic school system places great emphasis on

service to community and this is showcased during Catholic Education Week. “Catholic schools are seen as ... vital community hubs – anchor points that provide a sense of certainty and purpose and enduring values as Melbourne’s population booms,” Miles said. “New and expanding communities in and around Melbourne now expect that a Catholic school will be part of their neighbourhood and we work hard to meet this demand.”

im Kelly has been part of Melbourne’s Catholic education system for 30 years, but this year he’s taken on another challenge as the foundation principal of the new Glowrey Catholic Primary School in Wollert. The school is at the heart of one of Melbourne’s busiest northern growth corridors and, at full capacity, will be able to accommodate around 600 prep to grade six students. This is Kelly’s third role as principal, but he says being able to build a school community from the ground up is particularly rewarding. “What you set up at the beginning is critical further down the track so it’s an honour to help build a school’s culture from day one,” he says. “Glowrey will be a school where students come

first. It will be a place of high-quality education where each child’s learning and social and emotional needs will be catered for, and a place where gospel values are lived and are visible in all that we do.” The school is named to honour Sister Dr Mary Glowrey who was born in 1887 in Birregurra in country Victoria. She was a humanitarian and medical doctor who may become Australia’s second saint after Sister Mary McKillop. Glowrey spent much of her life from the mid1920s improving access to healthcare in India. She transformed a modest mission into a hospital and her work and legacy continue in India today, with millions of men, women and children benefitting from the healthcare systems she put in place. The Glowrey Catholic Primary School motto – Service, Love, Justice – embodies the life and faith of Sister Dr Mary Glowrey, Kelly says. “She had a great love of God and of people and a strong sense of social justice,” he says. As part of the school’s first Catholic Education Week, Kelly and the school’s staff and students are

New schools are showcased there and presented to the Archbishop and we will be part of that. I believe we will lead the entrance into the cathedral with the Archbishop and be involved in the liturgy of the mass, too.” The school will also celebrate by holding its first open day with families and the community invited to visit and learn more about the school, its facilities and its Catholic ethos. “We will showcase our learning and people can walk through the school and see the students at work and see what we are doing here. Our staff will do tours and students will also talk to visitors about what they are learning.”

Importantly, the week and its theme, “Growing Young in Christ”, will also be celebrated with students in the classroom. “For us, the theme is about making sure our Catholic identity is at the forefront of what we do,” he says. “Our students are currently learning about the life of Sister Dr Mary Glowrey and we are celebrating her life. There will be some fun activities for students to take part in and we will have a school assembly to celebrate the week, too. “Catholic Education Week is very special for us this year as it’s the first time we will mark the event. We have a new school and much to celebrate. In the busyness of school life, I think it’s a wonderful idea for everyone to stop and celebrate all that Melbourne’s Catholic schools offer to their communities.” ● SARAH MARINOS

MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
