Ask any Melburnian with a background in (or appreciation for) design and they’ll tell you, proudly, that the difference between Sydney and the Yarra River city is our European sensibility. There is a classicism to how we approach dressing, dining and, as the architects in our cover story explain, building homes. For anyone embarking on a renovation, their view of what constitutes timeless design may inspire. In an era when trends move faster than an Olympic sprinter in full flight, it’s lovely to acknowledge that some creations are intended to last a lifetime. ●

““I am Matthew Dawkins ” … and I’m an arborist I was 18 when I discovered I wasn’t afraid of
heights, as before I studied environmental science and completed a certificate III in arboriculture, I worked as a project firefighter in Gippsland. I was part of the rappel crew, where I jumped out of a helicopter and descended via a rope through the tree canopies into a remote area. It felt like controlled chaos, which is quite similar to a lot of tree work. People think arborists just remove trees, but my work frequently involves wildlife, like on the Yan Yean Road upgrade – the project Reynolds Tree Care, the company I work for, was involved in. It affected us emotionally to cut down so many trees, but it was good to implement mitigation measures. An onsite zoologist inspected every tree before and after it was felled. He checked for bird hollows, and peeled back fissured bark to look for micro bats. If any wildlife was found, it had to be relocated. I love the koala work we do for Parks Victoria. At Mount Eccles National Park in western Victoria, koalas have over-grazed the manna gums, so the population has to be managed. We climb up and wave a yellow and red flag on the end of a telescopic pole above the female koala’s head. They don’t like the flashing colour and come down. When the ground crew catches them, they are taken to a vet station, have their health checked, and a contraceptive implanted. I know it sounds silly, but after work many of us climb more trees. It’s generally practice for the Victorian Tree Climbing Championships, in which I just competed. This year I entered five events. Aerial rescue was the most difficult – I had to safely remove a dummy (the size and weight of a person) from a 15-metre height in under six minutes while vocalising each step. What I enjoy about my job is working with trees. I relish the physicality of it. As well as being part of a crew, I like doing private work where I can help people find positive solutions. Most people, once they get past the point of being scared of potential danger, will say how much they love a tree – its shade, the bird nests, and the kookaburras that have visited. I think, “Why do you want it removed?” It’s because they don’t understand how a tree works. ●

CLASSICAL NOTES 6

JULIAN KINGMA
Wo r d s
hen it comes to timeless design in Melbourne, award-winning architect Rob Mills of Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors is well versed in the conversation of what makes the cut. “A common thread that goes through all timeless design is that it must be classically proportioned,” says Mills, who has been in the business for 27 years. Known for his state-of-the-art residential work (his firm specialises in interiors as well as architecture), Mills is driven by a modern vision with an acknowledgment of what's come before. “The use of symmetry must be strong, the interiors should be familiar, often with English overtones,” he says. “Timeless in Melbourne would always have an English style about it because that's where we come from – it has to relate in some way to our English heritage. “The gold rush and the boom time of that era really informed our buildings. Bendigo is a great example of that architectural grandeur without being garish...materials need to be familiar, too,” adds Mills, who counts the NGV International by Roy Grounds as his favourite building in the city. His award-winning contemporary conversion of an Armadale warehouse, which he now calls home, is luxurious yet industrial simplicity at its finest. It's part of the reason why Mills has built his empire into a trusted one. That, and his deep respect for architectural heritage – evident in the Kenley Court residence, one of his creations – where the past and present converge on a hill of contemporary minimalism and individual expressionism. “I grew up in a Victorian terrace in a dead-end street in Malvern,” says Mills of his childhood memories. “It was tree-lined and very safe for kids to play. The home came with high ceilings and large windows – there was a lot of space. “I would say the grandness of my residential work salutes that memory. You'll always find tall ceilings and large spaces in everything I design. “I like to create an environment that is on a different scale to most homes you see; that really characterises my work.” Mills says residential homes in Melbourne have shifted from boastful to understated exteriors – it's less about facade-ism and more about what's within

that matters most. “Early on in my career, clients wanted a grand facade when it came to their homes,” Mills says. “The ambition for that is less so today and I think they're much more interested in the living experience within the building. There is more responsibility in the interior than the exterior now and it's a very common shift we're seeing in architecture. “Having worked for nearly three decades as an architect I feel we have truly learnt our craft, but the principles have always been the same.”

“ARM’s sunken forecourt garden at Victoria’s
usband-and-wife team Chris and Kathryn Rak of architecture and interior design firm Robson Rak believe timeless design is where a formality seems effortless. “Being a design-savvy city, Melbourne design can be best described as understated yet highly considered; priding itself on the rejection of pomp and shortterm trends,” Chris Rak says. Their properties Pavilion House and Toorak2 are reflections of two very distinct Melbourne suburbs. “The addition of the Pavilion House, with its sandy-coloured limestone walls, successfully reflects the Brighton beachside aesthetic,” he says. “The site is expansive with vistas to connect with a wonderful landscape at every turn through the house. “Toorak2 has a formality about it, which one would expect from a home in Toorak. The interiors are rich yet restrained – very Melbourne. “Both projects are a reflection of the honesty and authenticity that Melbourne design tries to achieve.” The couple also count Grounds’ NGV International as among the best architectural examples in Melbourne. “We love the NGV International for the original Roy Grounds design and then the Mario Bellinidesigned renovations in 2003.” Mills heads to Milan's Salone del Mobile (Milan Design Week) next month to focus on expanding his business in Europe and to launch a creative short film The Search with a dinner at the Pirelli Skyscraper on April 9. “Going international is the next big step for us,” he says. “I visit Milan every year. I love to immerse myself in the Italian culture and it informs my design. The Italians are the finest craftsmen of the world and have a big influence over construction of homes in Melbourne.” ●
Shrine of Remembrance is my favourite architectural project. Crater-like excavated gardens form a submerged alternative entry to a solemn hall of columns below the shrine; invisible but ingenious. The range of spaces triggers powerful emotional responses.”

Tired of white porcelain? Experiment with statement hues for a surprising bathroom update.

eciding on a colour scheme for a bathroom is no easy feat. Unlike most other areas in a house, this room is predominately made up of expensive fixtures such as showers, baths and basins that are designed to last decades, and the permanency of tiled walls instead of paint. It is therefore little surprise that most home owners opt for a similarly safe and white interior palette, but the recent collections of leading bathroom designers are a refreshing game changer. British brand Victoria + Albert Baths has just announced a new colour service enabling customers to personalise the exterior of their free-standing tubs and basins to one of 194 gloss and matte colours. Now, home owners can now easily integrate a pop of statement colour into their bathrooms without having commit to an all-encompassing scheme. “For too long we’ve all been playing safe with bathroom design, but increasingly we’re looking to introduce personality,” says Emma Joyce, Victoria + Albert’s spokesperson.

INTRODUCING MV2040 INTO THE MOONEE VALLEY PLANNING SCHEME Notice of preparation of Amendment C193moon Planning and Environment Act 1987
We are updating our Planning Scheme to make sure it aligns with our long-term plan for Moonee Valley, MV2040. At the same time, we’ve rewritten some parts of the Planning Scheme to align with the State Government’s recent Planning Scheme reforms. The amendment applies to all land in Moonee Valley. It proposes to replace the existing Local Planning Policy Framework (LPPF) with a new Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS) and a modified Planning Policy Framework (PPF) to include local policies. The amendment also proposes to make consequential changes to other parts of our Planning Scheme. Updating our Planning Scheme will allow us to work towards creating a healthy city which is fair, thriving, connected, green and beautiful. Public exhibition is open from Thursday, 28 March to Friday, 3 May and we’re calling for submissions. 8

We want to know what you think and now is the time to have your say.
View the amendment and tell us what you think at yoursay.mvcc.vic.gov.au/mv2040 Supporting documents and the explanatory report may be inspected at the Planning Counter at the Civic Centre, 9 Kellaway Avenue Moonee Ponds during office hours free of charge. Under the Act, Council must also make a copy of every submission available at its office for any person to inspect during office hours free of charge until the end of two months after the amendment comes into operation or lapses. “Colour is a great way of doing this and you can dial it up or down depending on how brave you’re feeling.” Joyce suggests choosing one or two areas of the bathroom, such as a showpiece tile or bath, to experiment with colour. “If you’d like to introduce colour in a more controlled way, perhaps opt for a painted basin, which will create an impact in any bathroom or even a small cloakroom.” Tapware is another way to add of a point of difference to an otherwise neutral bathroom. Melbourne-based manufacturer Sussex has released its 2019 colour showcase featuring fashion-inspired shades of green and blue. “Tapware should be like the final piece of jewellery you put on – it finishes a room and adds flair and finesse to a space,” Sussex director Vanessa Katsanevakis says. “Applying these seasonal colours to the bathroom is easier than one might think. Forest green and periwinkle blue sit comfortably alongside chrome accents, while the muted stone neutrals complement brass and gold highlights.” Sussex can even colour match a paint swatch and apply this to the tapware of a customer’s choosing
A M E LIA BA R N E S
for a truly bespoke bathroom. “Because we manufacture everything locally, we can be very agile with colour experimentation and it leads to some really beautiful and unexpected combinations,” Katsanevakis says. “Five years ago, chrome accounted for about 95 per cent of tapware finishes sold in Australia. For Sussex today, that number has dropped to about 30 per cent as we see more and more demand for colour, patina and matte finishes.” For those unable to renovate their bathroom, colourful accessories can create a big impact and have the benefit of being easily changeable. “I cannot go past high-quality bathroom textiles that can instantly transform any space – and in that category, Missoni Home offer the best selection of inspiring colour, pattern and textural options,” says Felicity Rulikowski, founder of interiors retailer Safari Living. “You can select your colour palette, then add layers with potted plants, flowers and ceramics.” Adairs product manager Natalie Chylinski also recommends bold towel colours and textures along with indoor plants that add a sense of calm. “I think

AUGUST - OCTOBER \ The season of preparation
Essendon garden by Mint Pool and Landscape Design, above and opposite right; Elsternwick garden by Franklin Landscape & Design, opposite left, centre.
As soon as the days start getting longer, the gardening year begins, Darin Bradbury of Mint Pool and Landscape Design says. “Start considering where your preparations are at for the end of winter and start of spring,” he advises. “This is very important. How are you preparing for heat and water loss that will occur in summer?” Bradbury, a multi-award-winner at the Melbourne Garden Show, stresses Melbourne has
“crap soils…not very fertile…[with] poor structure”. Many local soils are hydrophobic, which means any moisture beads to the top and never soaks to root level, he says. “The first thing you should be doing is using a bio-mulch, which has a composting material in it,” he says. “Water is absolutely critical in Melbourne when it comes to our gardens.” Soil condition is “everything”, agrees Dave Franklin, of Franklin Landscape & Design, who is a familiar face on Channel Nine’s The Block. Home gardeners should dig their planting holes “twice as big as they think they will need”, he says. “Put in some good fertiliser, wet it down well, and you really cannot go wrong,” Franklin says. “Whatever you do this season, it will always pay you back in summer.” Seasonal tip: If planning a vegetable patch, prepare and plant in this period – before the heat of summer arrives, and after late-winter frosts. ●

OCTOBER - JANUARY \ The party season
FEBRUARY - MAY \ The seasonal clean-up
JUNE - AUGUST \ The season of rest
In summer, savvy suburban gardeners should aim to put down their rakes by the week before Christmas, Franklin suggests. If you have been diligently fertilising in spring, you should “have the lawn mower ready to go”, he advises. “You will be busy in November and December getting it all done by Christmas as it is the pinnacle, when your garden is on social show,” he says. “If you take a long holiday, just remember the story of Jack and the Beanstalk is true. Go away for a month and don’t be surprised if you come back and the pumpkins are in your kitchen window.” Seasonal tip: Water features are fabulous in summer gardens, but choose a spot in diluted sunlight to minimise algae and evaporation. ●
The annual party is over and “it is time to get back to work”, Franklin says. This means home-owners must sow some serious hours into maintenance: pruning, mulching and clearing dead leaves and plants. “Deciduous plants will lose leaves and so there is now a lot more sun coming into the garden and that is great for young plants,” he says. “It is a good time to get rid of all the garbage. The more leaves you get rid of in autumn, the less to get rid of in winter when it’s not so good outside.” Another task at this time is laying mesh to protect plants from the cold. Seasonal tip: Grasses are at their prime so keep up the mowing and watering. “Lawns are exposed to the sun and tend to really take off and look amazing,” Bradbury says. ●
Geraniums often get a raw deal but Franklin insists are “not as bad as everyone makes out” and are a sweet plant option if wanting garden colour in winter. “They come in a wide variety of colours and are very hardy so will do OK in the winter, and coastal plants are also going to do OK,” he says. Grasses tend to “do it tough” if irrigation and plumbing is sub-standard at this time of year. “If water cannot drain away, the weeds will overgrow your lawn,” Franklin says. Seasonal tip: If your family has youngsters, it is a good time to get them tending herb gardens. ● ● franklinld.com ● mintdesign.net.au

Entertaining is easy here with a built-in barbecue, hotplates and sink.
