There’s an old-school element to journalist and broadcaster Waleed Aly in the way he wears his heart on his sleeve when getting to the heart of a matter. In the jumble of the news cycle, his voice is loud and clear in its articulate yet authentic delivery. He’s one of the most recognisable faces on TV and yet – with fearless political interviews to his name and a way of handling Peter Helliar’s cheek to his right on The Project panel – the Wesley College alumnus is still taken aback by his commercial success. And it all started with a schoolyard radio show. Journalist Luke Dennehy met him for our cover story. ●

FIRST PERSON
““I am Luke Fleury ” … and I’m a detector dog handler I’ve been a handler for about eight years, and before that I was in a different area with the Australian Border Force, or Customs as it was known back then. That was in maritime, waterfront activities – searching and monitoring the movement of people and freight across the docks. In the detector dog unit, you start with a brand new dog, so it’s a gradual process. You’ll be a rookie handler, then you have a new dog through training and into their career. You’re looking at two to three years before you find your footing with the dog. The dogs all have different odours they’re looking for. They are trained to associate a specific odour, whatever it might be, by playing a game with their handler. We use a rolled-up towel, which is like a toy and we play tug of war. People chop and change and have multiple dogs but generally you’re teamed with a dog for a number of years. I’ve got a dog called Zuko, and he’s looking for explosives. We do broad screening at the airport, or search freight. Narcotic dogs are probably what most people think of when they think of sniffer dogs. But we’ve also got currency dogs looking for money, firearms dogs, explosives dogs and tobacco dogs. You do develop some knowledge of who’s a bit suss, and working with a dog closely as a team you learn their behaviours as well. If a dog sticks to a person, that’s a good indication there’s something happening. The Labradors are bred specifically for our detection work, then they’re trained from the day they’re born. They go through pretty rigorous selection; we select only the best of the best. We exclusively use Labradors because they’ve got that retrieval drive, and they’re pretty trainable. They’re friendly dogs, too, which is good for searching people because they’re not aggressive. It’s not too bad coming to work when there’s someone happy to see you every day. It’s all about having fun at the end of the day, keeping the dog entertained, and keeping them working and happy. It’s a pretty interesting working relationship. ●

Marking 10 years of The Project, co-host Waleed Aly reflects on his first byline and the path to the popular show.
W
aleed Aly remembers it like it was yesterday, when he first realised his love of journalism. It was around the late ’80s, when he was growing up in the eastern suburb of Vermont and attending the local primary school. “I think I was in grade five and I knew I wanted to be a journalist, and I came up with the idea to put together a newspaper for our street,” he says. “It didn’t get off the ground, I only had one story based on my mum telling me a couple of plants had been plucked out of front yards – that was my front page lead.” He scrapped that idea but turned to broadcasting, starting a radio show at Vermont Primary School that he called VPSFM. “We would broadcast every Wednesday for 15 minutes, when everyone was inside eating lunch before they let you out to the playground,” Aly says. “We would put this show together, play a few songs and competitions. “I did that all the way through grade six.” Although he never gave up his media dream, Aly found himself steering towards law during his high school years. He ended up moving to Wesley College to study the International Baccalaureate for years 11 and 12 and went onto law at university. But Aly’s passion for the press and newspapers, in particular, was never far from mind. “I remember when I started writing, the first piece I had published in a major newspaper was in The Sunday Age on November 24, 2002,” he says. “I remember that date because I couldn’t sleep, waiting for the newspaper to be delivered.” His mother was very proud of her son and remains so to this day, cutting out and keeping most of the articles he has written, although this is now more difficult as Aly is prolific across so many forms of the media. From that innocent beginning on an everyday Australian street, Aly – now 40 and the co-host of Network 10’s Logie-winning panel program The Project, in its tenth year – has become one of the most talked-about figures in Australian broadcasting. As a Gold Logie recipient (in 2016), one half of a high-profile couple (with wife Dr Susan Carland) and on air at prime time, it doesn’t matter what Aly says, he often makes the news. Aly has his critics and there is a cottage industry, it seems, of clickbait journalism that hinges off his comments on issues of the day. However, Aly is careful to not buy into it or respond. “I’m aware of it because you can’t avoid it,” Aly says. “People constantly talk to me about what’s
6

written, but I would never look for it. I think it’s important not to, because you cannot allow yourself to go out on air thinking about what headlines will be taken from what you say.” This was particularly relevant in March this year when, in the aftermath of New Zealand’s Christchurch massacre, audiences were looking to what Aly, of Muslim faith, would say. It was a tough time for Aly but he shone through, delivering an editorial for The Project following the terror shooting, later interviewing New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern – who greeted him with an embrace – and Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Carland, an accomplished academic, writer and broadcaster, was there every step of the way leading to that editorial, as she is every day of his life. “She is incredibly supportive,” Aly says of Carland. “Pretty much every flash point in my career or my life, she’s got me through it. “I’m sort of loath to talk about it, but that’s
he’s constantly busy. Aly is a passionate supporter of the Richmond Football Club and rarely misses a game, sometimes flying interstate to watch his beloved Tigers, and is a huge supporter of Melbourne Storm rugby team, regularly going to matches when he can. Aly is also a talented musician, playing guitar in the band Robot Child. This love of music came at a similar time to when he discovered journalism, back at primary school in Vermont. Like many of his generation, his first instrument was the recorder. “I have a really strong memory of music class,” Aly says. “I think there was a drawing of a tree on the wall, and we were all given a leaf and had to write our favourite song. “You were meant to write things like Home Among The Gum Trees, but I said to the teacher, ‘How do you spell Bohemian Rhapsody?’ and I’ve been into music ever since.”
“You cannot allow yourself to go out on air thinking about what headlines will be taken from what you say.” certainly what happened during the whole Christchurch thing. “The piece to camera I did I started writing at 5.40pm, and the show was on air at 6.30pm. “The preceding hour or two was basically spent talking to Susan trying to figure out whether I should be doing this. “I think in the end she said I shouldn’t do it, but I reached the conclusion that I should. But there is no way I could have reached that conclusion without talking to her. “I was ringing her in three-minute increments for probably an hour or two. “She is pretty much the only person in the world who would give me good advice in that moment.” Aly started permanently on The Project in January, 2015. He had been a regular on the show for a few years before that, but at the time he was thought to have a very long career ahead of him at the ABC. Aly accepts it was a roll of the dice to move to commercial television, and it wasn’t a decision he took lightly. “Commercial TV is famous for spitting people out very quickly, and to be honest, I was far from convinced I would do a good job. It was a big risk.” At home, the father to Aisha, 16, and Zayd, 12, admits his mind is never far away from work and
Aly hopes to be part of The Project for a long time to come, and has a humble perspective of his career on commercial television. “I’m convinced someone who matters will one day wake up and look at the TV and see me, and go ‘Why is he here, how did that happen?’ ” he says. “I do still feel I’m doing somebody else’s job.” ● THE PROJECT \ Celebrates its 10th anniversary with a special 90-minute episode at 6.30pm on July 19, Network 10.

An egg-cellent idea
M
ost people I used to speak to would be squeamish about the idea of eating salted egg yolk. Nowadays, it can be found in most Chinese restaurants across Australia and diners tend to be more adventurous. Everyone I’ve cooked this dish for are usually curious and a little unsure at the start, but love the taste once they've had it. In fact, many of my friends have asked me for a recipe, so I decided to write one so that people can see just how easy it is to make. Salted egg yolk has been a craze in Asia for many years but, in recent times, many manufacturers have included them in their products – you may have seen salted egg yolk-flavoured potato crisps or fish skins. The yolks can be found in the freezer section of most Asian grocers. They are salted for three to four weeks, then boiled. Salted egg yolk is often added to sauces to impart creaminess and richness to the dish and is generally cooked with seafood such as crab, prawns and squid. ● Instagram: @diana.chan.au
Salted egg yolk prawns 5 salted egg yolks 12 large prawns, peeled and deveined Salt and white pepper, for seasoning 1 tbsp vegetable oil, extra for frying 2 cloves garlic, minced 20g butter 4 curry leaf stalks, stem removed Batter for prawns 2 egg yolks, beaten 1 cup corn flour Method ■ Steam the salted egg yolks for about 20 minutes. Once steamed, mash the yolks with a fork and set them aside. ■ Pat the prawns dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

■
■
Season the prawns with a pinch of salt and white pepper. Dip the prawns in the beaten egg yolk then lightly dredge them in cornflour. Heat 1 cup of oil in a wok and fry the prawns for approximately 30 seconds. Fry them in batches so that you do not overcook them. Remove and set aside to drain on paper towels. In a clean wok or pan, add in the minced garlic, butter and a tbsp of vegetable oil and saute for 30 seconds over medium heat. Next add in the curry leaves. Be careful – this will spatter a little. Add in the smashed egg yolks and stir over saute minced garlic in some vegetable oil and butter for 30 seconds. Keep stirring until you get a creamy consistency. Add the prawns back into the wok and coat with the sauce. Serve immediately with warm cooked rice and garnish with fresh herbs. ●

RAISING VOICES \ Karlsson has her own podcast, Your Dream Life, and interviews other high-flyers including dynamite New York publisher Arianna Huffington (above). “I decided that I get to meet so many amazing women on my travels, I wanted to share their stories,” she says. ● JOSH ROBENSTONE
wedish-born and Melbournebased founder of Kikki K stationery – that’s 100 stores worldwide and counting – Kristina Karlsson spends half of her busy year travelling the world talking about following one’s dream and finding your happy place. For Karlsson, that begins by writing it down in a stream of consciousness format, putting pen to paper and burning it. The daily ritual is built into her schedule to shed mental clutter for clarity. Then she turns to her journal, which is kept in a safe place, to write down ideas that could become much more one day. “For me, the most important thing is making time to reflect and disconnect from my devices and think about what will make you happy that day,” she says. “When you write something down, it allows you that freedom to get it off your mind. “I write three pages in the morning – it might not even make sense, but that doesn’t matter. I get it out of my system and burn it or shred it.” A “3am identity crisis”, as she calls it, is exactly what happened in the early 2000s when Karlsson knew she wanted to start a business but couldn’t figure out what to do. “I made my dream list at 3am. I knew I wanted to earn at least $500 a week, have a connection to Swedish design and start my own business,” she says. The upmarket stationery brand Kikki K was born in 2001. Now Karlsson flies around the world giving talks on her entrepreneurial achievements and wellbeing. A new collaboration stationery line arrives this month. Designed with Oprah’s favourite guest,

Sounds great in theory – but is it possible? “Of course it is,” Karlsson smiles. “When I speak about dreaming big, it’s not about some fantasy life, it’s about taking your reality and focusing on what is important to you. It can be as small or as big as you wish.” The married mother of two (Axel 8, and Tiffany, 11) says she’s become

better at self-care as she’s gotten older. “Self-care is my number one priority,” she says. “I have my holy hour [for daily exercise], too. Some people think that’s ridiculous, but it’s important to me. “I believe being aware of your needs leads to internal happiness. We all lead busy lives juggling family, work, kids and desire to travel, but it’s about finding inspiration in those things and realising it’s also OK to love nothing more than to wear PJs and read a book when everybody else is out for Sunday brunch.” ●
DREAM CATCHING \ Your Dream Life Starts Here is a go-to book of stories and tips from some of those Karlsson has met, including Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson and Stella McCartney. Moonlighting in cool company for inspirational mantras never looked so chic. ●

Give yourself a break
I
just wanted to say that I am in love with the current “self-care” movement that has been taking off. For me, my loving wife made me realise that I don’t stop, slow down and smell the roses nearly enough. It really wasn’t until Snezana pointed this out and I had children that I could see this. Now that I can, my perspective has absolutely changed and I am never going back. I always preach to my 28ers that you can’t pour from an empty cup and what that means is you can’t give your best to those around you if you are tired, rundown or stressed. So after gaining some perspective and finally taking on board my own advice with a real understanding that to be the best partner, father, business owner, employer or friend that I can be and

For me this clears my head, gets me away from screen time and allows me a very simple but important escape. In a way it transports me to the same great state of mind I am in when reading a book on holiday. INFRARED SAUNA \ Even though the jury might

MEDITATION \ I usually use the quick and easy-

Your self-care might be exercise, it might be pampering, it might be putting your headphones in and listening to your favourite podcast – whatever it is, enjoy it.
Don’t feel guilty about replenishing your energy stores, it’s better for you and those you love the most. My challenge to you all is in the next seven days, give yourself some love. Self-care doesn’t need to be constant; it doesn’t have to be four times a week or even once a week, but it is important that you’re in tune with your body, and that when outside pressures begin to build up, that you slow down or stop and do something nice for yourself. Be a little bit selfish and make sure you do it guilt-free. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

A contemporary version of Melbourne’s much-loved terrace-house style of architecture, this family home puts low-maintenance living in a convenient location, just 11 kilometres from the CBD. The house is smart, modern and stylish. On the facade, a mix of textures and earthy colours reflects aspects of the neighbourhood and creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Inside, the decor is sleek and harmonious with clean lines and natural light. Spotted gum floorboards are fitted throughout the ground floor and the upstairs bedrooms are carpeted. The cohesive palette of soft earthy colours continues indoors. On the ground floor, the main bedroom, with a spacious walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with twin basins, is zoned to the front of the house – away from the living area and the children’s bedrooms upstairs. A large laundry with storage, a linen cupboard and access to the side path, is next. Also clustered around this space are a powder room, study nook with built-in desk and cupboards, and storage beneath the timber staircase. The spacious living area at the rear draws in natural light and sunshine. Here, the white kitchen has a large walk-in pantry, subway tiles, a clear glass splashback and ample cabinetry with clean lines free of door and drawer handles.
