JACQUELINE MAZLOUM

As a big fan of our Australian entertainment industry, it’s been particularly pleasing to see how local TV productions have been able to rebound from the setbacks of last year, or find workarounds. This week’s cover star, renowned screen and stage performer Lisa McCune, discusses how returning to work gave her purpose and how, despite being a self-described fish out of water in a comedy show, she’s loving the change of scene. And I find her approach to giving anything a go particularly encouraging during a year in which so many of us are taking stock and rebuilding.  ●

COVER STORY

Something to smile about The world of comedy is proving to be Lisa McCune’s happy place.

I

t was during daily pre-dawn drives to Coburg from her bayside home that Lisa McCune got her acting groove back. Those 5am work starts – to film a new season of the comedy How to Stay Married – were the first time since last year’s double lockdown that she left the house for business. “I really am a fish out of water doing comedy,” says McCune. “But I love to explore something new. I’m the sort of person who will give anything a go.” The Network 10 show is filmed inside an architect-owned home in Coburg, which McCune likens to a Brady Bunch home equivalent, and it’s this setting the fictitious Butler family use as their backdrop. It’s where she delivers the deadpan punchlines as Em, an anxious mother of two married to Greg [Peter Helliar] for 15 years.

It’s a stark change from the world of theatre which audiences are used to seeing McCune shine in, from starring in plays and musicals such as The Sound of Music, Hamlet and The King and I. But she’s enjoying dabbling in comedy and, for now, it’s where the work is. “I remember when Pete rang to tell me we could go ahead with season two. I was like, ‘Yes, count me in, mate,’” says McCune, sounding more Em than herself. “Being on set was so joyful. Everybody was happy to be there; nobody was whinging because we were excited to be back doing something we love. It was truly a joyful moment,” she says of her eight weeks of 12-hour days during February and March.

home in Sandringham she owned with ex-husband Tim Disney and bought a new one nearby. “Having teenagers who are so entrenched in that bayside area is why I wanted to stay local a while longer,” she says. McCune was performing in the Sydney Opera House season of Hamlet, playing Hamlet’s mother, when it was cut short last year. It was the last time she performed in a theatre. Instead of getting on a plane to get home, she hired a car. “March was an eerie time. Lockdown was just starting, and everything was so uncertain. I was too scared to get on a plane, so I drove back.” At her new home, McCune fills her days rearranging furniture and

flowers. I plan to have them hanging up soon.” Inside her garage, which will be knocked down with the new renovations, you’ll find chairs hanging from the ceiling. It looks like the backstage of a theatre company with big old trunks to be found; they’re a nod to many stage memories. She still owns the gold slippers she wore in The King and I in 2014. “I can’t throw them out – they’re worn out, and I went through so many pairs. So much work went into making those shoes.” While she admits she has let go of a lot of possessions with the move, like throwing out boxes of old media clippings she didn’t need anymore, there are some things she has kept. “I have a gorgeous letter from Australian actress June Salter, who I

McCune met Helliar on Rove in the 2000s, which led to them working together on the ABC’s It’s a Date in 2013 and developing chemistry. “There is something really beautiful and honest in comedy compared to other work I have done,” says McCune, a 10-time Logie award winner for dramatic work. “I think his [Helliar’s] show resonates with so many because it really is relatable; it’s light comedy. We all can relate to an everyday moment in there. “Em is also a closer fit to me than the characters I played on Blue Heelers or Sea Patrol.” It took a pandemic for McCune to make drastic life changes she might have delayed if her work schedule remained hectic. She sold the family

objects, preferring white noise to music playing and the smell of food cooking as she potters around. “Home became more of a priority for me,” she says. “I also just turned 50, and it gave me a chance to reevaluate life and where I’m at.” There are plans to turn this home into what might feel more like a gallery space – she’s in the middle of conversations with builders to work it all out. She enjoys flicking through piles of The World of Interiors and House magazines for inspiration and is trying to embrace a minimalist approach to living. But her op-shopping habit might just bring that plan undone. “I have this bizarre fascination with scouring op shops right now and finding beautiful old paintings of

worked with on The Sound of Music. In the letter, she wishes me good luck with the new baby. She is no longer with us anymore. And it’s things like that which are special to me, those connections to people and places, that is what is important.” As far as what the future holds work-wise, McCune is happy to take a back seat for now. Returning to comedy was the happy pill she needed after months away from the limelight. “I haven’t been able to step back into the things I did last year because I now have a son in year 12 and that is taking priority for me. That’s the life of an actor: I don’t know where I’ll end up next.”  ● HOW TO STAY MARRIED \ Airs Tuesday nights on 10.

am unsure whether I feel worse for The Albert Park Hotel or myself. A few days after the 138-year-old pub reopened in March 2020, COVID patient 16 disembarked a plane from Singapore and promptly attended one of the venue’s first events. It shut for two weeks, reopening just in time for the restaurant lockdown. Then there’s me. It's a stunner of a day, the dregs of summer in autumn. We’re at the hotel restaurant, Happy Valley, and I can’t order the Peking duck which takes three days to make and mirrors a 600-year-old recipe from the Ming Dynasty. You see, I married a pescatarian. I can’t

through the four-storey atrium past floating paper lanterns and onto an indoor fig tree and handsome, wooden bar. Sapphire-blue carpet lushes up the main dining room with its original red brick columns, while upstairs the cane and rattan furniture is straight from my favourite Pinterest board. When a supple, springy egg-white omelette arrives in a spanner crab shell, all buttery meat and seduction, I forget about my lack of meat. It’s the same for tender salt-and-pepper calamari beneath a tropical snowfall of coconut flakes, bird's eye chilli and fried curry leaves. We double down on prawns: Spencer Gulfs in weighty har gow dumplings and a Skull Island special fried in salted egg yolk. The oversized crayfish and scallop dumpling is worth every one of its 13 dollars. It’s only after we’ve shared it that I learn its pool of “superior broth” is simmered for 24 hours; a mixture of dried fish, shrimp and – whoops – various meats. I won’t tell him if you don’t.  ●

What’s nearby? The butter chicken and lamb vindaloo pies at Mr Brownie Rooftop Hotel, South Melbourne, have proved so popular that owner Jessi Singh (also Daughter In Law and Mrs Singh) has added more for the AFL season. PARK LIFE Edwardes Lake Park, Reservoir WHAT CAN YOU DO THERE?

GREG BRIGGS

Life on the lake

PI C T U R E S Q U E N O R T H S I D E

The glow of the afternoon sun over the water at Edwardes Lake Park cements it as a jewel in the crown of Melbourne’s northern suburbs. It just teams with life, with a vibrant mix of people picnicking around playgrounds while children scream joyfully on the massive slide or on the flying foxes. The 28-hectare park, which is visited by more than 135,000 people a year, has two lovely playgrounds, a skatepark, barbecues with shaded seating, walking trails, exercise equipment, sports facilities and toilets. The vocal birdlife swoops and swims as walkers and joggers make their way around on the shady trail. To find the park I weave my way past tennis courts and a bowling club, looking out over the beautifully maintained lawns and onto the water. It’s full of all the makings of an impressive little adventure, and spying an ice-cream truck in the distance I know where I’ll be finishing my journey.

WHO WILL YOU FIND THERE?

Walking through the park, I am happy to see the stunning diversity of people and experiences it holds. Laughter rings from groups of women in brightly coloured head scarves sitting together by the barbecues as their children dart through the playground. There are young couples wearing band T-shirts pushing their kids on the swings. As I follow a trail around the water, I see teenagers playing soccer and some girls playing a classic game of Aussie rules marker’s up. People pump away at the exercise equipment while others lie under the trees, napping away the afternoon. It’s all of Melbourne rolled into one place. I see a woman with a bag and a grab-stick fishing cans out of the lake, so I go to say hello. Liz Hall works as part of a local group called Friends of Edwardes Lake to preserve, restore and manage the ecosystems of the lake. She says it’s important people respect the park by taking their rubbish with them and being mindful of its wildlife.

“I love nature, I love wildlife, and for me that’s part of what this is about,” Hall says. “Two Sundays ago, we were standing in the creek, and we heard this plop in the water and we turned around, and there was this tiny southern brown tree frog right beside us – it was so exciting.”
